Buffalo ‘66 - Independent Cinema at its best.

Few months back i was just talking to my friend about how Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction have affected independent cinema in hollywood and how people started accepting high rate voilence in movies. My friend mentioned about “Buffalo ‘66″ and he told me that its one of his favourite movie and started praising about vincent galo’s performance he told me that this movie is on par with one of my favourite movie “American History X” that made me desperate to watch this one. Some how i got to watch it over the past weekend and my first reaction was wow! People who like movies based on character oriented than story will definetly like this one. I never heard of “Vincent Galo” b4 this one and after finishing this movie i got to know more about him and he in real life is very much like the character of “Billy Brwon”.

The main story of the movie is about Billy comming out of prision for crime he didnot commit and wants to meet his parents before taking his revenge. The movie is mostly crime/comedy kinda movie. The movie manily concentrates on character development and flow of the movie is also character driven rather than story driven. “Vincent galo” is crazy as neurotic, pyschic, irritating Billy Brown, Christian Ricci is pretty good as Lyla and rest of cast is not bad. The character of billy brown stays with you even after you have finished watching the movie. I bet not many people know about this one and I recommend this movie to every one. Its different and great. It does not have a tricky screenplay like memento or reservoir dogs or pulpfiction but the characters are simply great. There is scene where billy goes into a strip club and decides to kill someone this scene is shot very well.

On the whole great and different film go ahead and watch it.Here is a dialogue from the movie

Billy Brown: Is this a shifter car? I cannot drive a shifter car, alright, so we got a little situation here. I can’t drive these kinda cars! What the fuck is goin’ on! You think that’s funny? Would you like to know, smartass? Would you like to know why I can’t drive this kinda car? I’ll tell you why, I’m used to *luxury* cars. Have you ever heard of a luxury car? You know what luxury means? Ever heard of Cadillac, Cadillac Eldorado? That’s what I drive. I drive cars that *shift* themselves.

    “Spanning Time”!!!!

I love this film, it is one that my friends and I quote all the time, because it is sooo quotable. And, Christian Ricci was great in this film!

Vincent Gallo is a true talent, and I don’t say that because he was once one of my favourite Calvin Klein models ;)

I don’t like all of his films, all of his choices, but if Parker Posey and Chloe Sevigny are the queens of Independent film, then Vincent Gallo is the king.

Not only did he write and direct this film, but he also did the music, which is great.

But, I would not widely recommend any film he has done unless I know the tastes of the person. His humour is too subtle and dark for most people, and can verge on meanspirited. And, like many artists (he also a painter and photographer), he just may be insane.

    Insane always works for me.

so does the guy who made that film.
Has anybody seen the documentary about how he fucked up. its called OVERNIGHT. A highly reccomended documentary.

CHOPPER is awesome. ERIC BANA is unbelievable in that film.
Grosse Pointe Blank is a very smart & charming film too. Saw it years back on STAR TV in India.
