Chak De - mother of all cliches but works!
Its kabir khan’s past VS his present.
Its india VS its muslims.
Its hockey VS cricket.
Its coach VS the team.
Its one player VS other.
Its seniors VS junior.
Its men VS women.
Its family VS ambition.
Chak De India - its the mother of cliches. But still it works. From the promos one can easily figure out what the film is all about and what is going to happen. But how it happens - there lies the trick.
Underdogs becoming heroes - now thats one formula which has been cracked many times before. Just few days back, me n two of my freinds had a long dicussion on the same. They didnt like Iqbal because its boring to see the same thing everytime. To see the underdogs winning the game. But call me old fashioned, i still want to see. I always want to see the impossible becoming possible. In life, it doesnt happen always but we still want the magic to work. HOW ?
Chak De India is exactly like that. Whatever u will expect, it will happen. The story, the characters, the climax, the acting - u can guess everything from the promos.
The girls are damn good. All of them. The senior player, the captain of the team, the one from haryana and the one from UP (Komal Chautala - the one name that i remember clearly bcz she is fun) are great. Though they dont have much to do but play hockey. And yes, they are good in it. Even the charcter actors play their parts well. The team’s manager(the lady with team) will surely attract ur attention bcz of her natural performance.
But Shah Rukh Khan - he does it again. Someone plz ask him NOT to act. Be natural. He is controlled but he still behaves like the King Khan. The dialogue delivery, the body language, the Ray Ban glasses - its all there. He needs to take out the word “King” from his head to fit into the character he plays. Essentially its a coach’s story. Its his story of winning the game but i didnt cheer for him. I dint feel for him. I guess thats a big failure for the director and the writer. I cheered for the team. The girls.
Shimit Amin’s direction - will rate Ab Tak Chappan better than Chak De. Jaideep Sahni’s writing -good effort but he has written much better stuff. Expected much more. one dialogue that i loved..which they are showing in the promos also - har team me ek hi gunda hota hai. Aur is team ka gunda main hoon.
And can somone please control the background music volume a bit. Music is used to keep pace thorughout the film but its so jarring at so many places. Much like in Nishabd.
On the whole, go for it. But dont expect anything out of the world. You will enjoy it. You will cheer for the girls for sure.
( For those of you who are sick, bored, tired and dead of super shit like tara bum bum, doom barabaar doom, naked n nikki n all that…do watch it. So that they stop serving all that. )
( Bonus features - 1. Promo of Laga Chunari Me Daag - ye daag acche nahi lag rahe. Looks like Bunty n Babli meets KANK. But its not so. You can figure out the whole film from the promo and m not excited to watch it. Atleast from the first promo.
2. Teaser of Aaja Nachle - doesnt say much. Madhuri Dixit will be back!! m waiting n how!!! )

Did I watched some other film?
I thot SRK was brilliant! Give credit where its due..
CDI rox!
@Rocky,i think when the directos work with SRK the biggest challenge is to make him NOT act. He overdoes everything. Make him go natural. In recent times, only Ashutosh managed to do so in Swades.
Rocky, it completely rocks… But since it’s coming from Yash Raj, it is being difficult for many to digest it…
Phoenixnu: you have developed fetish for new and new faces everytime. nothing old gives you joy hence every new face sends attraction to you and every old brings boredome.:)
But old basmati, old wine and many old things are said to work better but guess SRK denies to be old so you cant count him in old precious things.
This is one YR Film which you have liked in ages.
so congrats to YRF on this little victory.:)

it works and how……i loved every moment….brought me back my college days….all those who have been coached …..have played…..have fought…has bleed on the field….GO WATCH
well said.
srk chak de india ki sabse kamjor kadi hain.
star stardom kyon nahi chod pate?
hey vasan…mujhe nahi pata tha ki tum girls college me padhte the…..aur to aur hockey bhi khela..chak de bala…waise tum to YRF ke shruu se FAN rahe ho..
Ajay: old habits die hard. One big star cant undone his established manners of acting in one single hit. Its changed this time and if film gets success he will change more in next.
Before DDLJ SRK was the star with reputation of doing different from others.
Film is different and if its getting success then its a happy news.
Variety is the motto!!!!!:)

Giri saab tere Jharkhand se bhi Chak De ke team mein ladkiyan hai…..jaake dekh shayad tu janta ho…
jharkhand ke log to khel kood me awwal hai.bas mauka milne ki der hai..indian hockey team me 2-4 players to hote hi hai apne yahan se…cricket me to dhoni hai hi..chakke chudaane walaa…
Movie Rocked !! YRF has gained some credibilty now after the mega blunders that it has churned out in recent times. SRK was damn good.we were part of a group and It worked for everyone.
JHARKAND ZINDABAD…..
most of the indian idol contestants are from Dhanbad, Jharkand. So more….
[...] Phoenixnu, Passion for Cinema Rating: Thumbs up …I always want to see the impossible becoming possible. In life, it doesnt happen always but we still want the magic to work…. See full review [...]
pehle phir bhi they were very good in makin promo’s et teasers…:”>
I haven’t seen the film but even the die-hard SRK haters are liking it! Raja Sen (of Rediff) who criticized SRK’s last two movies has said it to be “return of the King”. And no pun for the king.
Pratim! Agree with you!
@RK…ha ha. But its not true always. for new talents…m willing to hold the flag. We need more talented people…the more the merrier. yashraj has really worked hard on the girls and it shows. People will come to c the film for SRK but they will go back home talking abt the girls. Thats a great victory for YRF again. if they realise CHUCK DE STARS,it wil b great.
Frgt to add..it was such a great relief to see a YRF film without Rani and Preity!!!
N Jharkhand…mumbaities dont know much. some still wonder if thats a new state or capital…n m talking about people around us including many filmy guys.

the movie was damn good in spite of the cliches. On watching the trailer of PRADEEP SARKARs next movie was a bit disappointed looks like it has a lot of masala in it.
Okay, I am going to see the film in half an hour. Will let you know my reactions.

the Gold which the Indian Women’s team won at Manchester….with Negi as the coach in 2002…the real Chak De moment….
CDI is no Lagaan. But it is no Apne also. It is about redemption but goes beyond. Its about team spirit. About discovering oneself.About reaching for the stars and going beyond one’s limitations.More than the direction its the script that works at crucial moments. Jaideep Sahni’s dialogues rock, especially Haryanvi and Punjabi dialects by two such natural performers. Yes, casting is another key. A bunch of sixteen girls and so good. Cheers to Shimit & Co. for this. In taking out performances Shimit scores.Worth a watch.
Just saw the movie and contrary to the review, this is the second Shahrukh movie in which the director has managed to restrain Shahrukh Khan from being Shahrukh Khan. The first was Swades.
And this is the third Shahrukh Khan movie worth remembering, the first being but of course, DDLJ. But in that one, he is the quintessential SRK. In Swades and Chak De India, he is the Mohan Bhargav and Kabir Khan.
And that’s why these movies rock.
Shimit Amit has delivered a whammo. One of the best things was the background score. Mellow when needed and adrenalin-pumping the rest of the time.
Jaideep Sahni’s dialogs and writing, excellent. Vishal Sinha does a brilliant job with the cinematography. Moojik’s great :D
All in all, Chak De India :D
Alright guys, I understand why some of you don’t like SRK’s usual mannerisms and all that. But give the guy a break. In Chak De India this was NOT the same SRK from his romance films. This wasn’t even the SRK from Swades.
SRK played Kabir Khan decidedly different from other characters. And it was GREAT! He was intense, charismatic, and he fit the coaches character perfectly. He exuded the characteristics of a sportsman determined to win.
3 things I think we need to realize:
1- The majority of who will go see the film with go for ShahRukh. Can’t take that away from the guy, and I don’t see how that’s possibly a bad thing.
2- We wanted something good & different from YRF & SRK.. They’ve given us that.
3- It takes balls to make this kind of film in India. They could have gone the safe route and taken cricket or even Men’s hockey.. Shimit Amin, ShahRukh and YRF’s Adi Chopra should be appreciated for taking such a risky step AND executing it so well.
Charles Foster Kane… Yeah I read Raja Sens review… He surprised me with such high praise…
“a return to glory for Shah Rukh Khan… the superstar doing excellently…”
or
“Khan, of course, is King. This is a bravura performance, a gritty drive by an actor who clearly has sport in his blood. The fit of Shah Rukh as a hockey coach — inspiring, canny, frustrated, helpless and profoundly hopeful — is so naturally perfect that it’s a wonder he hasn’t done a sports film before. It’s been a while since we’ve seen him visibly relish a role like this, and while he has to mouth some clunky dialogue, Khan is simply super.”
I had to go back a few times to see if this was Raja Sen or Taran Adarsh…
I saw the film yest night with my wife who was national lavel karate champ and state level athlete…and I found her jumping over her seat and screaming with nostalgia…so I think Shimit hit the perfect chord!
Perfect Casting!
Good homework in terms of international hockey!
Very crisp photography and editing!
After a long time, good use of SRK as a star!
But yeah, some of the scenes were really mother of all cliches!!
And THAT Taran gave it only 2 stars. That’s why I was compelled to see the film last night. After all, he was the one who gave Swades 1.5 stars. And I loved the film and yes! SRK!
It was brilliant! For me, it’s as good as Swades if not better. After a long time, I am agreeing with Khalid. He says, “Shah Rukh Khan is outstanding
Saw the film last night. Anyway was expecting a good film from Shimit and Jaideep combined. A progressive entertaining film after such a long time. The girls rocked it. It was great to see SRK so restrained. Yes he was better than in Swadesh and is a pleasure to watch .
what is really commendable is having a cast from across the country. We never get to see the other inhabitants of our country in our film and this does so beautifully. Also love the spirit of the film.
Hope the film rocks the box office. last night at least the theatre seemed pretty much entertained…. Thank god for no wedding songs, no retarded sexsist jokes, no extended families, no designer costumes…. its a real film.:)
Yeah! Onir! You took my words away. I was just going say what I forgot in my earlier comment. Though, we are very few who think SRK is better here than Swades!
Cheers!:d:)
BTW. I THINK THE 1 IS THE 1 GLORIOUS YEAR OF PFC!! Ain’t I right??
well according to Taran, Shootout is movie of the year…so how can he praise this movie!!
Q-suppose film ka hero kabir khan ki jagah shahrukh khan hote aur jaise woh polio drops ke liye sandesh dete hain, waise hi hocky team taiyar karne ki than lete to kya farq padta?
A-tab chak de india jyada real hota.ham shahrukh khan ke role mein srk ko dekh rahe hote.hamen jyada dikkat nahi hoti.
Not only Shootout! See the films which he gave high and low ratings to (only in 2007):
GURU (4):Mani’s Worst is Bollywood’s best for him!
BLACK FRIDAY (4) : This was his best review ever! It deserved a better rating. :)
EKLAVYA (4): ???????
TA RA RUM PUM (3.5): As usual, masala YRF! “Strongly Recommended!” says he!
METRO (2.5): As expected, he’d give a lower rating.
SPIDER-MAN 3: “Minuses: Difficult to find” :o
SHOOTOUT (3): Shootout at my brains.
JHOOM (1.5): After a long time, a bad review for YRF by him.
APNE (3.5): “Recommended”. Gosh! “mere liver ka tukda le lo!” - I didn’t dare see this movie after this quote on CNN-IBN.
AKS - MOVVVVVIEEEEEEE(3.5): “Damn the critics, this one’s for masses”. He calls himesh a good actor! This film (haven’t seen) is best described by oz’s words: “the real g**** story”
PARTNER (4): Duh!
So, it was pretty much expected that CDI won’t receive above 2. Why? Because it has no formula YRF element: song, dance, blah..blah..blah.
Dear All,
Since this post has generated so many comments, I presume so many are interested in sharing their thoughts on this film. I would be extremely grateful if you would visit my blog and post your comments on my thoughts there.

Charler…. Bang on about India fm ratings. Actually I wanted to laugh when I saw a 2 star rating. But he will say… that’s trade prediction…. his reviews are supposed to reflect not how good or bad a film is but in his own words ” jo hit hai woh fit hai”… and he is happily announcing to the whole world” Chak de hasa slow start” :(. I hope it picks up and does well. Then YR might start giving us more of these films
Charles F. Kane:
Yeah I thought SRK was great in Paheli as well.. I really liked that film as well…
As for Taran Adarsh, his rating key isn’t based so much on his opinion of the film (with few exceptions like Black Friday or where he uses his alternate “critical rating” key) but rather on what he predicts the film will do at the box office. If you go back an re-read this review or the Swades one, you’ll see what I’m talking about. Not defending the guy, just referring to an email I sent IndiaFM a few years back and that’s the answer I got… made sense at the time…
I thought SRK was great in Chak De, not sure if it was better or more natural a performance than Swades, but the fact that so many of us are drawing that parallel says a lot…
As I said in a previous post of mine, Om Shanti Om is the #1 film I’m looking forward to this year… Why? Because I’m a die-hard ShahRukh fan (blindfold me and line me up against the wall sans cigarette as I’m also looking fwd to NO SMOKING)…
More so because I simply loved Main Hoon Haa… that was one of the most entertaining films I’ve seen in the last 10 years! A perfect all out masala movie the way hindi cinema used to make them; encompassing comedy, action, romance, drama, family all in one film and combining it all so damn well… Farah Khan’s direction was awesome, soaked in tribute and yet ahead of its time (by 2004 standards).
Speaking of which the throwback tributes to the 70’s/80’s (the obvious “Masoom” angle, the merging of all genres, the usage of songs such as “Jaane Jaan Dhoondta Phir Raha” and others, ShahRukhs look when he first joins the college, the college setting itself (wasn’t Mera Naam Joker and other films shot in that same location?)… everything was such a fantastic blend of 70’s and 2004 hindi cinema…
I expect much more of the same, if not on a whole new level, for Om Shanti Om… It’s not meant to be “masterpeice” cinema, its meant to be the type of hindi cinema we grew up loving… the “Amar Akbar Anthony” or “Seeta Aur Geeta” or “Karz” or “Bobby” or “Hum Kisise Kam Nahin” style of campy escapist cinema which was meant more to entertain than to impress us…
Onir bhai, yeah I really hope the film picks up with postive word of mouth… maybe the public was taking a wait and see approach before going for it…
Even here in Vancouver, where normally a ShahRukh starrer opens to packed houses, the cinema hall was about half full… mind you I saw an early show on a Friday afternoon…
Though I liked the movie coz it brought tears in our eyes.specially whenever Kabir Khan sees the Indian flag but It seems that we all lost into the magic of
Tony,of late i ve a different opinion of YRF stuff..From N&N to JBJ..i thought they lost the vision and focus..CDI redeems to a great extent that lost ground. It better do well.Apart from SRK give credit to a bunch of non-professioanl sixteen girls to give seasoned actresses run for their money.
Havent watched ChakDe till now, but came across a very hilarious piece of stat..would like all of you to have a look at it…

couldn’t help sharing this with you guys. For once YRF seems to be needing our symapthies. Hope CDI breaks the jinx.
cheers!!

Forgot to mention the teaser of Aaja Nachle. Yes, I doesn’t show much. But a teaser review by a blogger has taken me. Here’s this: http://bollywood-unlimited.blogspot.com/2007/08/aaja-nachle-teaser-exclusive-madhuri-is.html . It says, “There’s Madhuri in front of the studio moon and stars scattered all over the sky, right? Some of the stars are very bright. Now, this seems to be a self-referential style. Why? The stars are there. They’re bright. Okay! They resemble some stars of this Bollywood like Aishwarya, Abhishek, Preity, Lara et al.They stay in the sky round the year (astronomically not right, but stars can be seen everyday in the sky). The moon (Mads) is not in the sky everyday, but when it comes in the sky, it outshines every star!” Agree with every word of this analysis. Madhuri is still unmatched! What say?
Mr. Giri, on a different POV, I actually came out of the theatre smiling and humming the tunes. It’s right that YRF has been hammering nails on our brains with their last few films.
According to me, they have REAL(LY) hit the bull’s eye this time. For, the director is Shimit Amin.
loved the movie.. jaideep sahni rocks.. shimit was brilliant.. liked everything except the commentator explaining every aspect of the game and the jingoism.. which i m sure was the call out of insecurity.. easily the best yashraj film since DDLJ..
i agree the film needed SRK to bring in the audience.. gang of girls was awesome..enjoyed every bit of it
Anurag! I agree! Hope the movie becomes the biggest YRF hit ever! Taran says, it has a slow start maybe because he wants to see it this way. He says the film should’ve collected 90%+, which we all know it wouldn’t. After all, Himesh film did 100%! But if the audience reaction and occupancy are something to go by, it’s a big hit here in Kolkata! Hope the positive word of mouth makes it a blockbuster. That would compel YRF to make more such films.
SRK, Jaideep, Shimit just rock! Everyone has said, it’s predictable and clich
Saw Chak De yesterday at the India Splendor event on Wilshire.
I see a lot of movies (atleast a couple hundred each year) and I think Shimit and Jaideep pulled it off. Tournament sports themes (unlike boxing etc.) are difficult to deal (especially something hockey world cup) and they did it!
This was one of SRK’s better movies. Here is what I liked:
(a) the fact that they could use a bunch of unknown faces in a movie and still be able to put it together.
(b) the whole ‘Musilm in India’ thing… very well done with the backgrond tune ‘I was once a color in three’. The subject always needed more talk and kudos for bringing it up.
I enjoyed it and hope everyone else does and makes it a big hit so that more such movies can be produced.
Mohican, could you tell us about the Q&A with Shimit and Jaideep? What all was asked?
I’m afraid I’m slightly lost. Am also wondering if all of us have seen the same film. The other uneasy thought raising its ugly head in my mind right now is whether the modernists, the anti-establishment, everyone from Anurag to Onir and all of us in between are failing to call a spade a spade, which is to say the film suffered terribly on the many fronts.
Given that it had JS and SA working together, this film should’ve given us at least a little of the magic we saw in Ab Tak 56, Company, KKG, BnB, and the combined work of both these individuals.
Am asking to be englightened. Show me the light.
Kartick Sitaraman either you liked Chak De or no….yaar itna analysis kyon….either you felt for it or no…you did not…others did….simple hai yaar….and yes Karthik we will still call a spade a spade….we liked Chak De…it was a Yashraj product..but..we liked Chak De….rest those thoughts you mentioned which were raising in your head….niyat aur passion for cinema sahi jagah per hai…..Chak de sare pareshniyan….koi nahi yaar….tu tension na le….batti sahi jal rahi hai…roshni yahaan kafi hai….andhera nahi hone denge….
Heard so much about it… guesss its brilliant. Hope to see it soon… SRK.. you did it again!!:d
Why? We like to call a spade a spade. That’s why we are showering appreciation for this film. There’s indeed no bias.
And why are you trying to impose your POVs on everyone of us, calling us biased? That’s your POV. That may not match with everyone. Only if someone doesn’t like a film, a film is bad?
I believe, comments by directors like Onir, AK are not bad enough to be dismissed as bias. They know their jobs pretty well. They are liking it who are YRF/SRK haters and wouldn’t get any kind of working offers/ facilities from YRF. So let them praise the movie they like. Where Phoenixnu wrote a few months back about his resolution not to watch any YRF as he found them terrible; now he sees the film an praises it! What’s wrong then? I would request the concerned author to keep his comments with himself and not to make people take his comments in general. People should not miss this film on the basis of some TRULY BIASED comments.
On a different note, does the concerned person really think Bunty aur Babli was a better piece of writing by Jaideep than CDI? Gosh! Then again, it’s my POV. And if one really thinks the scipt/film suffered, so did KKG, Company and AT56 (my POV again).
There are 206 people in IMDb who thought Lage Raho Munna Bhai to be awful (rated 1). Now each one of them thought this film to be weak and everything…Now, they may also accuse us of liking a bad, weak film called LRMB. So is LRMB such a one?
We had great expectations from GANDHI MY FATHER but THAT DID SUFFER terribly in many grounds. Onir had said that. All great critics, including B. Rangan, also showered praises on CDI. Moreover, this screenplay is a perfect structure with Act I,II,III as suggested by screen-writing guru Syd Field.
It’s the best film of 2007 (along with Black Friday) so far, if you ask me.
CDI Rocks!
P.S.: I have not mentioned any names here! So I’d expect that I receive no hate-mails/ personal attacks after this one.
Saw the film yesterday with a bunch of young nubile NRI females who just kept screeching every time SRK came strutting across the screen. I kept expecting him to flash his wrist watch or some such. I simply did not see the brilliance that AK and Onir et al have. Manipulates our collective heartstrings! Not too different from the jingoistic masala films like Pardes. Oh well, everybody wants to be in the big league. More glory to the wannabe Farah’s, Aditya Chopra’s and Karan Johar’s of this world!
Suzy you are absolutely right but agar ye movie hit ho gayi tokam se kam yash raj kuch meaningful movie to banane ki koshish kar sakta hai.
Hey Guys
Thanks for the review of Chak De. I guess most of you liked the movie. Looks like its a must watch.
But if i am not mistaken there was another release this friday ‘Blue Umbrella’ and i am dying to know what pfc guys have to say about Blue Umbrella. One reason being that i am a huge fan of Vishal Bharadwaj movies ‘maqbool’ ‘omkara’ ‘makdee’ and now comes ‘Blue Umbrella’. May be Blue Umbrella is not a new movie for most of pfc guys as they must have seen it in some festival long back as its been ready for a year now and its just that its been released now by UTV.
Sorry once again for a off topic comment but let me know if your thought if you have seen Blue Umbrella.
Oz,
Of course, Jaideep was more articulate in his answers as compared to Shimit.
Some highlights of the Q&A:
(a) Jaideep’s comparison of Bollywood songwriting with writing a string parsing program with 40 standard phrases.
(b) Jaideep did not interfere with the Shimit’s area (as director). This helped Shimit immensely as Jaideep was bale to concentrate on the craft of writing.
(c) SRK was cooperative (unlike Aamir, I guess!)
(d) The fact that music in the movie was awesome inspite of not having any formulaic songs. Most Hollywood sports-theme films borrow heavily from the third party labels for creating background scores. For CDI, such music had to be created from scratch and exclusively.
I couldn’t stay through the whole Q&A, but it was interesting.
Guys..I saw CDI yesterday here in Pune and am glad to say that YRF have come out with some engrossing work this time. Hats off for the casting.
a. The girl who does Komal Chautala rocks!
b. Tanya Abrol..after this engrossing debut (as the Punjaban) should not be relegated to comedian roles..as they do for such stout girls!!
c. The lady who plays Vidya..the ex captain rocks..she looks completely like some of the haughty corporate types I come across everyday!! The slanted shoulder n all!! Shimit did a wonderful job with her persona.
d. SRK for his sport understanding. I dunno whether any other actor would have done as good a job!! Okay..maybe Aamir or Kay kay?!
e. The matronly asst. coach - was fabulous!!!!
Of course! like many critics mentioned over the last 2 days (why the personal angles of the team - players were not explored!!!), it was good that the story maintained a straight line..just keeping it to the sport..therein lies the bravery of JS - SA combine (also the YRF people) as any sub plot would have taken away from the story. The grip as one would say!
I rejoice for Indian films as CDI, Mozhi,Metro, Omkara, Kabul Express, Khosla ka Ghosla, Bheja Fry, Black Friday and many forthcoming ones actually heralds new genres for the viewer. They may not be hits or even well made films in the classic mold but are giving us a damn good choice as the cinema lover on every Friday.
Boy!! we sure do live in interesting times….
Vasan - fair enough. chak deta hoon… magar convinced nahi hoon.
Charles Foster Kane - wasnt trying to IMPOSE my pov on anyone. i asked to be shown the light, did you read what i wrote? Also, I dont believe anyone would miss a movie ONLY basis my pov, but that’s a flattering thought. Thanks very much. Again, I didnt accuse anyone’s pov of being biased. i was only thinking out loud, for an audience which i felt is mature enough to deal with those uneasy questions.
And as a parting thought, we could draw up a list of movies which follow the Syd Field structure, but I doubt how many of those you would find to be great films.
I feel very often that we are so good at looking at what we do not have that we forget to look at what we have. I agree that a lot more could have happened with CD, There a moments where I cringed…. but at the end of the day for me its not just Shimit and Jaideep. It is where they are coming from with this film… not a Factory or a independent film like KKG. I think that all of us are ware that YR carries its own baggage and some of it is reflected in the film. But one cant deny the fact that it is a change a small positive step…coming out of YR.
@suzy as far as want to be in the big league statement…. just check out the current Filmfare… and see Anurag’s comments on YR.
@Kartik… BNB for me did not work at all. so maybe its a question of POV. I went in not sure if I will like this YR product after having skipped the last to TRPP and JBJ. Hopeful because of Shmit and Jaideep…at the same time not expecting miracles. I came out happy… never claimed that it is a masterpiece.
Pretty good work and neat film from Jaideep n Shimit…grt redemption for yashraj…read my review on my blog cinemaparadiso.rediffiland.com (Aargh- can’t wait for the end of the month to get my PFC membership back!!-oz are u listening???) Any way, CDI aside, Laaga Chunari Me Daag definitely gets my vote for the most bizzare trailer ever…what is it? BnB meets Chandni Bar? Time travel? Amazed to see this from Pradeep Sarkar…still not over the shock!!
@Dipankar…now thats a bigger question. but our world is all about POP that defines pop-corn, pop-culture,pop-patriotism and so pop-ular. as long as it gave two hours of entertainemnt,we r happy with our popcorn n cola. patriotism…has to entertain in the pop-ular format. otherwise look out somewhere else. real world n real struggle…lets go out.
“1″ ?????
@Rahul…saw blue umbrella. liked it. i thought somone will post the review.
“ONE” ??
BEST FILM OF THIS DECADE, ON PAR WITH LAGAAN!!! CDI is beyond words. Go, watch it.
I finally watched it yesterday, thanks to SRK i couldn’t get the tickets on Fri and Sat.
It was really nice to see SRK act in this film after watching him overact in numerous films. He has done tremendous job as Kabir Khan. Shimit Amin’s Direction is brilliant. It’s his direction that keeps you glued to the screen while watching a fixed match.
Some scenes have been dramatised without a reason (YRF effect may be), like the ending (it should have been shorter) and even the climax. I liked the way dialogues have been written, one dialogue worth mentioning is “main is silver medal ko ghis ghis ke gold me badalne ki koshish kar raha hun. kabhi chor bazar me bechne ki naubat aa jaye to kam se kam iski sahi keemat to mile.”
i guess u haven’t watched the movie properly. it was srk’s most natural performance. the emotion the restraint was all visible. u try as hard as as possible to find srk but u wont. he was kabir khan just kabir khan which is clearly eminent in his dialogue delivery n his mannerisms. pls learn 2 give credits when sombody gives a hell of a performance.ur review is based on preconceived notions
WELL DEAR BUDDIES I CAUGHT THE SHOW 1ST DAY..,,AND THOUGH AM A HUGE FAN OF SRK….EVEN SITTING THROUGH SOME OF HIS FORGETTABLE MOVIES MULTIP-LE NUMBER OF TIEMS I MUST SAY THIS MOVIE NEITHER MAKES ME CHEER FOR THE GIRLS NOR SRK….THOUGH THE GALS ACTED WELL AND ARE PROBABLY THE ONLY GOOD THING IN THE MOVIE.
ALL IN ALL TRULY THE MOTHER OF ALL CLICHES TAHT WE DONT DESERVE TO SIT THROUGH.
Chak de - Good film/product. Horrible Cinema!
The film clearly managed to make the audience sit at the edge, take notice, sob, cheer and clap. Entertainment fooltook! . Such films are very much required and thats why I guess we all dont mind it since its a positive step. However, I’d like to contest a few opinions here. Getting straight to point:-
1) Its supposedly a hockey film. But strangely it portrays hockey as a no brainer slam-bang game with a lot of running. No strategy, no personalization.
2) Its film about Kabir Khan. Except he doesnt talk about what he’s going through and prefers dropping a line or two and gliding out of the frame. So you dont really know what he has been through in 7 years. He doesnt talk about any strategy. Only “hockey” contribution - last frame of the final match. I was moved because it was “SRK”. So it was him and not Kabir Khan delivering the dialogues.
3) Its a film about the girls. Oh yeah? So they are shown to be fickle, scheming, inspiring, caught-in-the-family-plot, blah. Wait…am I watching Star Plus? Show some passion god damn it! The racy background score makes you punch the air(good job!) but wheres the human touch yaar? At no point did any of the girls display skills which would make you say “waah! sahi hai yaar!”. We are left to assume that they possess some since they are the best from their states(dialogue repeated atleast 35 times).
I certainly wouldnt call it new/inventional/classy etc. This is an awareness campaign film to me and nothing more. It looks to harp on the tried and tested formulas and sticks to them religiously. The cliches in the film were so well served that it made you burp.
All in all, you could apply this to corn field and the story wouldnt be any different.
“We need to till for our country folks! It needs our corn”
Boys v/s Girls Hockey match:-
1st Half:- Boys are evil. The fowl and snatch the ball. The girls are scared.
2nd half:- Girls are inspired. TheyV got the skill! What happens to boys-who cares?! So they are just running around dumb founded.
At the End:- The girls may have lost the match but they won everyones hearts. Even the evil boys are gentlemen now.
Mummy star plus lagana!
P.S.: Im sorry for going a LITTLE overboard :)

Phoenixnu, you read my mind.I was foolish to hope that Gandhi ,My Father would survive despite the overrated cdi hype.
One thing I loved about CDI was the realistic manner in which the hockey sequences were choreographed. Awesome! Bordering on the level of sports choreography achieved only in cult sports movies like Rocky, Raging Bull and forgive me for being cheesy here, Space Jam. Never before in Indian cinema.
