Nice to see Chithram mentioned here, one of my fav Mohanlal flicks. I’ve seen it so often I know almost all the dialogue by heart. Not great cinema probably, but seriously good entertainer. Wish the Hindi remake had never happened though!
And what music! Eeran megham is so monsoony, Paadam pootha kaalam still moistens the eyes, the sombre mood of Swaminatha Paripalaya..
btw, the combination you’ve mentioned is incomplete without Nedumudi Venu
@ Geeta- I do agree with your points. If its entertainment, it better be like this is what I would say.And yes all the songs are gems.BTW I mentioned the combination of just the director, hero and the writer.Yes Nedumudi Venu & M.G.Sreekumar also deserve mention otherwise, for their fine contribution to the movie.
Forgive my abysmal ignorance, i didnt know sreenivasan was the writer (i know how shocking this must be for a trivia-database like yourself!). But given his apparent meticulousness, the kind of gaps in the writing are puzzling: e.g. Sreenivasan calls himself Kalyani’s maternal uncle, but he’s actually her cousin (aunt’s son).
Geeta…chitram was Sreeni’s story..the script was not his…as Priyan himself claimed this movie was made without any script :-) …and he shot an extreme improvisation of Sreen’s story on the shooting spot…
Ah, that explains it! amazing though, a full-length movie that’s completely improvised, n yet the scenes are so well-executed, there isnt a single jarring moment!!

You are the light of my loneliness, the … of my heart, the tune of my desert, the queen of my kingdom, and I love you My dear Kalyani..
I just love this one as well
EDO INGERKKENTHA NAALE PAREEKSHA UNDO? – Lal to Nedumudi..
That scene where Kaimal & Kalyani decide to test Vishnu by not giving him his payment is hilarious – the way Lal does a complete pradakshina of the coffee table, then goes up and comes down the stairs multiple times while delivering his witty dialogue is all so naturally, effortlessly done.
Geeta- Ram is right. The movie was completely shot on an “improvised working of the story on the spot”.Thats why Sreenivsan is credited also for the story while Priyan is credited for the “script”
another trivia about the movie is that the production house was bankrupt & it was this movie which kind of went on to make a hysterical business for the same ,surprising everybody.
True.. I’ve also heard that the producer was facing a severe cash crunch then. The heroine was also suffering from some illness, which stalled the production for a while. After a long hiatus, the shooting resumed and became a cult
@ Arjun- yes truly in a lot many ways the movie symbolises probably what Malayalam cinema has stood for- good movies , blending entertainment with artistic values. I am eagerly awaiting the revival in Malayalam cinema.I’m confident the period of mediocrity will go away soon.
