Cinema guys: Blog Blog Blog: till you earn your audience
Before discussing any kind of points, first we must read this wonderful poem of
Jacob Riis
When nothing seems to help
I go and look at a stone cutter
hammering away at his rock
Perhaps a hundred times
without as much as a crack showing in it
Yet at the hundred and first blow
It w’d split in two
And I know it was not
That blow that did it
But all that had gone before together
Keep the essence of the above mentioned poem with you as it will be supporting the whole hypothesis.

Are you a person related to some parts of cinema? Actor? Director? Producer? Writer? Cinematographer? etc etc ?
You believe that you want to do work, taking cinema ahead and you are not interested in doing regular stuff only? You think cinema is one topic of art and it is also an artistic expression to work in cinema?
You do off beat work ? Off beat in the sense that its made in such a way that perhaps average audience may not give attention to it because their average senses, and desires may push them to go for other average films, having same routine material, they have been seeing in every second film and where they feel they got value of their money back?
You release your film and it gets little or no audience?
And you feel depressive about this whole affair?
This is not failure but market is defining you as a failed person having no commercial appeal in your work?
You are depressed? You turn bitter?
Blog provides a relief and that too a big one. It provides you an opportunity to search your audience.
Blogging like a wonderful device was not available in the past. Now it is there before you. Use it. Exploit it to the maximum and prepare your audience for your work. Don’t rely on regular audience. You will have to help them to raise their level of standard of understanding the art. You have to play creator as well as a teacher.
History suggests that all great entrepreneurs have searched their customers by approaching them on their own. People by nature don’t welcome new things. Because feeling of safety is not associated with new and average mind demands safety first and all other things come later.
Be a warrior and write continuously.
Come and come all, don’t relax till you succeed.
Educate audience and if you are successful in refining taste of few audiences then you will find your market. When you try new things then somewhere its your own responsibility to reach to the right kind of audience. Don’t worry about negative minded people who would give 1 star, while many others would shower 5 stars, to your good work also. Your continuous good work will defeat them one day.
Don’t just blame average intellect of audience. Somewhere in some fields of life you also will be playing safe, you also will be searching safe ways and there you also need education to raise your standard. Somewhere you are also a customer for many things and you don’t want to use new things suggested by new producers.
Same philosophy works in every field.
Don’t just sit sulky in the darkness of your homes, cutting yourself from the rest of the world. Write and reach to the people and once you generate interest in them about you, things will fall in place.
Its happening with many and it will happen to you also.
Blogging has made it possible. Everybody and literally everybody can take out 30 minutes time on daily basis to write about his ideas about his kind of work. Perhaps initially many don’t get readers but slowly suitable readers gather around suitable material.
World is there to explore.
And many like minded people will be gathered and collective energies have something very precious place in the lives of human beings.
Don’t believe it? Try it.
It was a wonderfully genius mind who had written.
Mein akela hee chala tha janibe manjil magar
Log judte rahe kaafila badhta gaya
Soon your feeling of being lonely will be disappeared. Something fruitful always waits behind the unknown darkness of future and its revealed at right time only but we waste precious time and energy in living under depressed phase. A day is lying ahead of darkness of night. We all know it but often we don’t believe in this and live in depressive state.
If you think people don’t understand your intellectual level then you are at wrong side of thinking. You have to present your intellect in such a way that its understood and it enhances people’s understanding level also. If inspite of having all the intellectual level you cant search ways to educate people then this intellect is good for nothing. It’s a selfish intelligence then, useless for others.
Dil ko behla lene ko Ghalib ye khayal achcha hai.
Blog is the medium through which you come across common men living life among struggles and you come to know their psychology. You get hundreds and thousands of ways of expressions and this all help you in creating something. You get praise and it supports your belief in your creative works. You get criticism and it keeps you grounded in the realities. You get abuses and it makes you angry and frustrated but all feelings help you to bring in genuine things in your creations because then you are observing, living real things and all are not theoretical in your creations.
Guru Dutt died in mid 60s but when we discuss his films in 2007 and thousands of new audience come to know about his work then its possible that few hundreds out of those thousands will go to search DVDs of Guru Dutt’s films and will watch them.
Same is happening with Satyajit Ray. His name will be having more audience all over India than he used to have while he was alive. This is happening with many creators lived in by gone era and who were not understood in their time because they had no way to reach out to people to educate them about their creative works.
Same is happening with every filmmaker who ever has tried to make films standing above the intellectual level of average audience and this is sure that if they were alive in the era of blogging then they could have used their intelligence and energies in educating the audience.
Art is not only for self satisfaction. Good art has one more added responsibility also and that is to educate contemporary people because by that way artists contribute in the progress of civilization of their era.
Earlier you were heavily dependent on media and journalists and whatever you wanted to say you had only two mediums either you had to write articles in newspapers and magazines or you had to say your thoughts through interviews but then few things were producing hurdles in these ways.
Its not necessary that journalist may have that kind of knowledge in cinema which can extract out some intellectual things from you during interviews and even if you have said something significant then editors always could edit out the portions and your sayings were never coming out in a way as you wanted them out to be.
But now you have a blessing in terms of blogging and you can say what you want to say. Life is short and don’t waste it in having complaints against the whole world. Share your ideas with countless people and you don’t know what it can bring in your creative life.
Device is there and now its up to you. Take it or leave it and decide your own course of action in life.
Its said that nothing happens in life without a purpose. Any progress comes at right time and when its needed most. For all those who are in the areas of art, today’s progressive step is blogging. If you turn your face from it, you are living a regressive life. A backward one.
You don’t have any right to complain to your fate, God etc, because nature provided you a method to express and search people for your work but you rather preferred to live a negative life.
If you were a film maker in the past years and you made some films which average audience could not understand and you took self imposed retirement or market forced you to take it and you started teaching in some institute then its better to teach a large section of audience through the blogging. Its foolish to confine your teachings to selective students only. Spread your knowledge/learning far and wide and you will find people have brought you back in to the active film making and you will live atleast last phase of your life with the sense of fulfillment.
What is the use of being remembered as a filmmaker who made 1-2 films only?
If you can make and your creative energies are still alive then make more films.
Reach out to your own audience.
And pay a careful attention that blogging does not boast on providing a miraculous way. It demands continuous efforts. You have to write on regular basis and its seen that once started then any genuine blogger follows this trend of continuity on his/her own. But as a caution what may better express the meaning than the poem of Jacob Riis mentioned in the very begining of this post.
If you are religious and believe only in religious scriptures then Jesus has said in Sermon on Mountain.
Knock Knock Knock and door shall be opened to you.

bahut sahi likha hai…100 chot marne ke baad hi agli chot ka asar dikhta hai.
to add to Rk, blog HERE…!!!!!!! at least you know people will read your posts…
you can blog for free and without resorting to ass licking of the media or mentors…
you can blog for urselves and for us as well!
Inspiring post specially for budding film makers!
important to mention PfC here, cause each person blogging on their own blogs is one thing, but to have a gathering of people having an interactive session is unique to PfC and also adds to the “credibility” factor cause Aamir saying how wonderful he is, on his own blog, is me saying, my film is the greatest in my yahoogroup, hence the objectivity is at times lost. Effective marketing involves speaking talking straight (good or bad) and this PfC blog does it well.
