cinema-man’s life in a coconut shell.

Why call myself that huh? Well why not? Thats what I’ve been upto the last decade or so.Saving the poor, lighting up their lives, bringing joy to millions…yes thats me!..cinema man. Its a bird,no its a plane…noooooo, its cinema-man, cry out millions every friday when they see me zipping through the stratosphere….
Sigh…Ok I’ll shut up with the crap. I’m just a regular guy in the business, who has been upto some slightly irregular business the past few months. But more on that later….

Who am i? and why should I be reading you? Well..hmm..lets see, how about a brief bio about myself. Here’s a listing of my chequered career..

1) My first job was being Baba Sehgal’s body guard, as he landed in Hyderabad airport. I was overjoyed with the opportunity of making way for him through a throng of people. Baba was quite overjoyed himself, that he had a personal security escort to his hotel. But he later dimmed with shock when he heard me utter some maa-behen punjabi gaali’s to the crowd….well that was my first job.

2) I kicked lucky ali in the balls…you see my director caught me hanging around the sets doing nothing…so he asked me to wear a costume and act as a long lost friend of lucky ali as he comes in running yodeling away…I had to rush into his arms..
You know we never do that in real life…so what resulted was, what would happen when two super fast express trains would collide…I kicked him in the balls (by mistake), and we came tumbling to the ground..

my career took off from there…

3)I was sent by my director to places like paradeep in orissa and numaligarh in assam to shoot coal being shoved onto a pipleline. I did that for months.
4)I quit my first job and was broke.

my career nosedived from there…

5)suddenly a call, got me work as a chaperone to a bunch of noisy, irritating kids for a film. I was so good at my job, I thought I’d quit and become a teacher.
6) I was fired cus I fell in love during the shoot. (will explain some other time)

my career further nosedived from there…infact i hit the bottom so hard, that it hurt.

7)I met a guy called Sekhar Kammula, who had just come from the US and wanted to make his first movie. I thought cool, atleast I get to be busy this way…the result…Dollar Dreams…no boxoffice, critical acclaim…national award…no work…
8)I spent a year in Mumbai, having written the script of the century…went knocking on doors of people as varied as Shatrughan sinha and Shah rukh khan. I was about to give up living in that stink of a lodge….
9)One of the Khan trio’s office gave me a call…couldnt believe my ears….I was now spending weeks on end at his Pali hill residence, tweaking the script….
10)They suddenly figured I was too young and asked me to join their production for the time being….

my career and me were in a coma now…

11) Got a job in a huge mnc, with fake experience of having been a good manager in film units with a corporate approach….
12) Spent a year and a half, thinking they’d figure me out as a no gooder filmy guy…..Luckily they didnt and I quit cus I couldnt take the stress of keeping a job, let alone loosing it.

my career woke up from its slumber…

13)Anand-manchi coffee lanti cinema…was the exec prod, assoc dir and supp actor…..was a huge critical and boxoffice smash….the doors of the industry literally opened…I mean literally….Sekhar and me were called to Chiranjeevi’s house and he opened the door for us in his lungi….I looked at sekhar and said….we have fucking arrived….
14) within a fortnight….the CM and the EX CM had requested private screenings….I had pvt thoughts of being an MP someday….the bubble was in full bloom.

my career had a hard on…and it was hard to stand up…fuck even sitting down was difficult…

15) then godavari happened. simply the biggest film made without any stars….100 days of frying and floating on the magnificient Godavari. got adventurous….invested the millions i made (ahem, ok not millions, but some rupees)….
16) was never paid back by the producer….was more broke than a broken bridge….

my career and me had nose-dived.

17) As I stole a rupee from my mother purse to have chai one depressing night….I decided to make a movie…a movie which would be my anti-dote for life….
18) So i made a movie, which had one actor, one camera with me handling it and me directing it….and one production assistant….shot in 30 days….with no lights, location permissions or money….I shot a movie….which i am hoping to release this summer.

my career had a…..still trying to figure that out….

    Cinemaman

Good to know that you worked with Sekhar. Personally, I did not like Anand but it was sure a sensible film (which is very rare in telugu)and as you said was a big big hit. I was in India during that time and was shocked to see the crowds at a theatre in vijayawada.

I felt very happy to finally see Sekhar’s efforts being paid-off. I think he resigned from a well paying job in US.

Hello Anish….I loved your role in Anand….it was quite funny……I am really amazed at how much struggle normal people have to go thru and Star sons have a cake walk (atleast in telugu)….for Ex: Allu Arjun…he was awful in the first movie, but still he got many chances and now he has proved himself. Sometimes I feel that life is very unfair….

  14. Rocko on March 12th, 2007 1:16 pm

BTW….forgot to ask you….are you involved with Sekhar in his forthcoming movie “Happy Days”….
and when is your movie “Confessions….” arriving? I have seen the trailer and I seriously doubt that it will have a release. If it doesnt have a release then please upload it in some webpage, becos I feel that it can become an internet rage (atleast among telugu movie buffs)

  15. pradeep on March 12th, 2007 1:17 pm

  20. John L on March 28th, 2007 10:36 am

    You remind me of me.

I am 36 now. Worked hard for years making programmes for TV, didn’t get noticed, got tired of peanuts and dropped out. Began working for a corporate house for a strange job. Four years later, I am broke having bought a Canon XL2 and would like to make a film. I am nobody. You must be somebody if you’re writing here.

Actually can’t think of myself doing anything else.

Anyway it’s heart warming to know shit happens to everybody :)

All the best to your and your film.

I liked your work with shekar in all his movies…
but you seem to be more frustrated with the industry rather than learning form it. i agree that you are very skilled, creative and talented. you might be thinking that you dont ahve anything to learn from this messed film industry but thats not true….you still have to learn a lot infact everyone in the industry have lot to learn.

i dont understand why are you sarcastic and critical about how big hearoes are treated by few co-workers . i think you are intelligent enough to know that, you have just counted few people and there are a lot others to be accounted for.

not everyone is like what you think. and more over ..you done seem to be justified with your own thinking pattern…its pretty imbalanced …even you know that very well…but you think that rest of the people are fools and they will realize their foolishness……let few days pass by ..you will realize how stupid your mindset is !!!

    Amen
