New Time & Cost effective solutions for Filmmakers & Producers has struck India and is sweeping everyone as it becomes a raving success story among the Indi-filmmakers who want to make 35mm Films/Ad (The pun ‘indi’ for india/independent is an interesting one). I have a feeling that the potential for such films is even greater in India (then America) as it is full of talents who are unable to make there films due to lack of money.

The old scenario of filmmaking is changing very fast with a lot of digital cameras coming in and it is at this juncture of transition that the new recorder called Cinevator has hit the Indian market. The recorder is brought to India by Filmlab in Mumbai and is transforming the workflow of films and advertisement. The digital cameras like JVC 700, Panasonic 3700,900, Sony F900, EX3, Z7, 270, Canon Mark II, RED, SI2K etc… are making filmmaking dreams of various independent filmmakers a reality in no time.

Gone are the days when people had to assist 10-15 years to get their 1st independent filmmaking/advertisement assignment. This is an age where “the world knows you by what you do and not by what you are capable of doing.” Hence it becomes very important for every filmmaker to grab any decent digital camera (at least HDV) which can shoot progressive frames and edit your film. After that they simply render the entire image of uncompressed timeline as .dpx/.tiff and the audio as 24fps .wav file. Put it in a hard disk. In no time they are ready to see their material transform into the magic of 35mm theater screen as a 35mm film print with the help of Cinevator Recorder. Cinevator is actually a recorder which records direct to 35mm print there by bypassing the use of negative intermediate, inter positive, inter negative and sound negatives and that too in Real-Time. With the Cinevator you can turn a digital master of your advertisement even in ‘DigiBeta into 35 mm print film’ including sound and subtitles – all in real time! That means no more waiting for weeks before you see you 35mm print. This has lead to making the life easy for all producers, cinematographer and filmmaker belonging to India Media, who are under constant pressure of time and cost.

Some skeptics did ask in the beginning,” So what are the projects that are done on Cinevator?” But soon everyone joined hands in this revolution and the result was commercial projects like – ‘Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna’ whose subtitle prints(English and Arabic) were made directly from Cinevator (with the graded .dpx film scans) without the use of negative. That translated into huge saving of Inter negative cost on image, subtitle negative and sound negative. All the prints coming out of Cinevator were master prints, which were consistent in result and of a very high quality. Soon to join the list was also this year’s Oscar winning project “Smile Pinky” which was shot on Digital Camera but needed 35mm prints for theatrical release. These became good reference points for Bollywood Industry and the filmmakers started accepting the technology as a practical solution for their problems. It also created the win-win situation for everyone with easy Censor Certificate copy which could be got during deadline even before the DI grading and recording to inter negative was over thus saving the wastage of sound optical transfer. Finally now the technology has caught up with even the big production houses who were amazed to see the superior print quality even from DigiBeta. Not just in North India, the message soon spread to South and East & West India and censor copies of film like ‘Kerala Café’, ‘Pazhassi Raja’. Now the bag of Cinevator is full of references from across India in different regional languages like – Tamil, Telegu, Bengali, Marathi, Marwari, Bhojpuri and Gujarati films and even advertisement. People started googling out Cinevator for more information on this technology. Facebook became another interesting medium for them to share their opinion about this technology and show support.

Today Cinevator has become perfect solution for all those last minute Censor Copy (with or without grading), Ads & Trailer Theatricals, Releases prints, Subtitle prints etc. If flexibility matters, the Cinevator is the best choice. In principle the Cinevator has replaced the old film recorder, film printer, sound optical transferring machine and subtitling machine. At last there is one machine that will do it all!

hi Yaatri, Thanks for the appreciation, for more details you can google out “Cinevator” and add urself to the group on facebok. As far as the cost is concerned it cost as less as Rs 5000 only for 1 min Ad/Trailer… for 1st 35mm print including everything as package(with no hidden cost)… For film there is a around 70 to 80 % saving for the producers for making 1st 35mm theater print which they can use for Censor, distribution and release… ( one can make as many number of prints as there is no limit)… for more information you can contact me at 9820396611… Take Care!

that sounds great! It’s high time we started digital movies in India. The EX3 is a great camera that I personally think gives great color resolution. Already shot a feature on it(currently going through post in the States) and it looks simply great!
It all depends on how well you light it and shoot.

The RED One is good too but the workflow ends up being more expensive than film. Might as well shoot with film(speaking from experience).

Digital filmmaking is a great way to go if you are an indy filmmaker just starting out. Nonetheless, I would still say that if you have the budget, just do yourself a favor and shoot on film. It still looks the most beautiful(mirror mirror on the wall…).

I also agree with you that gone are the days when you had to assist for years before getting to direct. That system is flawed anyways because an AD is more of a production job than a creative one. It prepares you for a producer more than a director. It is also a highly specialized job in itself and should not be considered a means to an end.

If you really want to direct, just go ahead and start directing. Take that digital camera(beg, borrow, steal) and start shooting the next Blair Witch Project.
Or start directing plays to get and idea of how to work with actors. Or write an amazing script(just takes a laptop and a great idea to write one) and hold it hostage.

Don’t fuss about HD or film or RED…the simple Mini DV is enough for broadcast quality video. The Panasonic DVX 100 is a great Mini DV camera that takes great images and sound. Really cheap too. Don’t like the Sony Z-1 because that HDV format is neither here nor there, the DVX is much better with color rendering. Great for small festival shorts.

If you wanna make movies, make movies. I am doing it. See you at the next festival!

I have attended a workshop on Cinevator conducted by Lokesh Todi. .and the result were fantastic. … i think in this new era of indie films, films can be made digitally and still get a good print on 35mm.. for festivals, Censor board and film prints (if one needs for release).. Way to go technology.
