Coming this year: Sultan the Warrior - (online trailor)

The good news first: Sultan the Warrior is being readied for a release
by the year-end. And the bad news: we will still have to wait for a
lot many months before we get to watch the boss in action, though in
an animated version.

The release of the second trailor of the film was held at a press
conference in Chennai on Sunday, and the atmosphere at the Inox theatre
was nothing less than electrifying. It was almost as if those present
were waiting for the premiere or the “first day first show” of a
Rajnikanth movie.

Sultan the Warrior is being produced by Ocher Studios in association
with Adlabs. The movie is being directed by Soundarya, the 23-year-old
daughter of the superstar and the managing director of Ocher Studios.
The animators and others working on the movie at Ocher Studios were
out in strength to cheer their MD and also to see how mediapersons
would react to their work.

And the moment Soundarya and her mother, Latha Rajnikanth, walked in,
the Ocher cheering squad was on its feet. The noise and applause
subdued when Soundarya took the mike and started speaking, only to
resume when she announced that the trailer would be played for the
journalists present.

The movie will mark a watershed for the Indian animation film industry
as it is the first time that any living actor in Asia is being
animated for a full length movie. The movie boasts of some of the
biggest names in Indian cinema: music by A.R. Rahman, sets by Thotta
Tharani, and lyrics in Tamil by Vairamuthu.

Asked how she hit upon the idea of making an animated movie starring
her father, Soundarya said, “I am the biggest fan of my father, and I
love all his movies. And when I decided to make a movie, I decided to
use his animated version. Initially, he had a lot of doubts and
questions, but after he got them clarified he backed me completely.”

And no she did not have any plans to don the greasepaint. “I always
plan to be behind the camera, not in the front,” the pretty woman, who
has a smart business head on her shoulders, said.

Soundarya said, “The movie will have all the elements which are
present in any other movie of my father. It will have four full length
songs, and also a comedian and a villain.”

Around six-eight months were spent on pre-production before they
started the animation work. Ocher plans to release the movie in 12
languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and English.

Caught the trailer the other day..nice detailing and well defined drawings..atleast in the trailor..hopefully the same will be maintained in the full length feature as well..and if it means some delay in the release date then Thathastu..so be it

What the fuck is wrong with A R Rahman?

  4. Tushar on January 14th, 2008 3:06 pm

    can’t wait!

  5. Johnny Gaddaar on January 14th, 2008 6:38 pm

What exactly is your problem Mainak with ARR?

  6. Mainak on January 14th, 2008 7:26 pm

Repeated use of Grand sounding music!

Its awefull. Watch Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Probably the worst Film music of 2007.

He is a talented guy. He needs a break. Before he becomes a machine. I feel he should take 2 years off & travel in India & around the world. I want the old Rahman back.

by the looks of the trailer this one gonna be a watershed event in India’s animation films !!

  8. K J on January 15th, 2008 7:41 am

totally not impressed with the trailer. character models are okay, but the physics sucks bigtime….

  9. P(L)AYBACK on January 15th, 2008 7:50 am

    @ KJ …What Physics u talking about ? …got confused with the slow motion ? The movement ( technically,…inverse kinematics ) looks good !

  10. K J on January 15th, 2008 8:11 am

The characters seem to be be missing limbs. too robotic. fluidity of motin missing. also, the technical errors. rajni was about to hit the guy with his right leg, when he finally delivers the kick, its his left one.
it seems like ragdoll physics have been used which works for games but in an animation movie, makes the humans move as crash test dummies would.
i seriously think unless we can gain fluidity of motion in 3d, we should stick to 2d.
but ofcourse, it’s rajnikanth. nothing said or done will change the fact that milions will probably watch their 1st animated movie coz it is starring him.

  11. P(L)AYBACK on January 15th, 2008 8:16 am

@ KJ,…”unless we can gain fluidity of motion in 3d, we should stick to 2d”…this statement shows your ignorance in animation.(with all due respect)…Sire,…2D animation is a 100 times more difficult !!! …and I still dont agree with your rag-doll analogy !

  12. P(L)AYBACK on January 15th, 2008 8:20 am

@KJ …Agree with the left-right leg continuity problem ! Such things are UN-PARDONABLE in animation ! And the last shot IS “rag doll”,…but dont be so harsh :)

  13. K J on January 15th, 2008 8:36 am

arre relax playback! saans toh lene do.
and i know 2d is actually much more difficult to do. i know so many people who are able to animate in 3d w/o knowing an iota of how to draw on a piece of paper (i’m like that too).
but the thing is, for character models to move like real ppl in 3d, a hell of a lot of understanding of biomechanics is required. to make the character model with 206 bones with accurate movements requires a lot of understanding of how the human body moves, and a lot of motion capture is required, which has obviously not been done.
that is why the japanese studios still prefer to make hand drawn animated features.
nd surely it is ragdoll, played and design many games using it.
and to remind u of limitations of ragdoll, just compare ratatouille with final fantasy movie or compare the new johnny quest episodes which used to come on tv some 5-6 yrs ago o the new tmnt movie.

  14. P(L)AYBACK on January 15th, 2008 8:42 am

@ KJ…sorry if I came on too loud. But u are misinformed. There are established software routines which take care of exactly how the human body moves ( IK,…as I mentioned b4) in 3D animation and you really dont have to apply your mind to it. The software takes care of the physics,…you just dictate what you want. Ofcourse,…u gotta know the software really well ! :)

  15. K J on January 15th, 2008 9:09 am

i have never seen the process which goes behind making an animated film. but i do have experience in computer game animation. and all my understanding of animation comes from that. so in that case i may be misinformed. but the point i was making is that ragdoll simulation uses rigid body dynamics whereas the human body is neither entirely rigid nor fluid. that is why the skeleton is first made and physics as ragdoll and some pseudo-ragdoll physics used for the rest of the human body which is quite new and even i don’t know how exactly it goes about it. hence my ‘lack of fluidity statement’.
but pixar and imagi studios are obviously using combinations which i guess indians may be unaware of. i saw how bungie went about rendering the physics of it’s halo 3 game. they were using ragdoll in combination with a lot of motion capture to give heavily scripted war sequences which would otherwise feel real.
as u pointed out, the physics are left entirely to the software here, and hence the entirely ragdoll movement.
but i would still love to watch the movie if it has all the rajnikath elements in it.
btw, a fun fact. do you know that in the latest version of tecmo’s video game series Dead or Alive, two physics engines have been used? one is entirely dedicated to the accurate movement of the female characters’ tits?

    Trailer looks impressive ,
    Nice work

    But In my opinion
It looks more like Computer Game, (Based on live action film, like Matrix and all)

There is no Stylization,..(Talking about Character Designs) very safe side designs

  17. P(L)AYBACK on January 15th, 2008 9:27 am

    @ Shekhar ! I think they lifted available mesh models ! :P

  18. Shekhar Shimpi on January 15th, 2008 9:48 am

    @ P(L)AYBACK

    There is no Rajani,man
    Except his head,
    it looks dead to me

Sorry, I think this is not the stage to criticize

  19. papai on January 15th, 2008 11:37 pm

Fights look a little like Prince of Persia Warrior Within/ Two thrones… Its called free form fighting system

  20. vimal on January 21st, 2008 1:17 am

The trailor was nice.Atleast it seemed better in the theatre than in youtube. But y is there a THUD sound whenever rajni sets his foot on the ground??..sounds more like the dinosaurs walking in the Jurassic park series? and whts with the rap by ARR? Isnt this an animated movie which happens in the medieval times?…or is that rap jus for the trailor??..anyway, sounds distorted with the whole “Sultan” thing !

  21. Rex on January 21st, 2008 4:21 am

Watched the trailor. Must say I’m really disappointed by the output. The first trailor which had come was much better.Expected something to the level of final fantasy. As Kj and shekar has said, this looks worse than a high end game.the settings has a lot of the game assassin’s creed.go to the link below.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXu3pdxeKpQ

Frankly, the stunts in live action movies are much better off than these. If it’s an animation movie abt Rajnikanth, we expect much more than the usual stuff. The Bg’s are awesome, direction is good but justice to animation is not done. This movie hasnt even reached the quality of the animation done for the game of the above given link.

  22. shiva on January 21st, 2008 11:31 am

motion capture cannot be called animation. animation is art. motion capture is not.

  23. Mithun Gangopadhyay on January 21st, 2008 11:37 am

    Gollum ain’t Art ????

  24. shiva on January 21st, 2008 3:08 pm

gollum was not animated entirely. except for the face, almost everything was acted by andy serkins which was motion captured.

the credit for gollum goes to andy serkins, peter jacking and j.r.r.tolkien.

  25. Mithun Gangopadhyay on January 21st, 2008 4:59 pm

“animation is art. motion capture is not.”

Well Im confused. Motion capture is the means to an end and if its used to bring to life a character like Gollum surely it’s considered a part of the artistic process.

It’s like saying that in cinematography lighting is an art whilst camera movement is not.

Leave aside Serkis, Tolkien and Peter jacking :-) you don’t think the VFX guys who actually executed the entire thing are artists?

  26. shiva on January 21st, 2008 7:14 pm

    sorry about the jacking mistake.

i’m not talking about the movie here. i’m talking of animation in general. there’s no art when dealing with motion capture data. the people working on it just have to “clean-up” the motion capture data. it cannot be called art or animation. thatz the reason they are calling it “performance capture” nowadays.

where as animation is an art because it has to caricature life, for which you have to study life. it requires a great deal of observing. and put it to work, in showing life in the most simplistic way possible.

Isnt this copied directly from the game Assasins Creed? A much inferior copy I must say..
it will feel stupid to watch prerendered scenes on the big screen inferior to what I am playing real time on my tv.
