Had an opportunity to talk to Kamal Kamaraju, the lead actor of Confessions of a Filmmaker. As promised i will be bringing in news about the movie. While the Trailers, Music videos, etc are on the way…how about having a one-on-one with the actor himself. Right, Kamal will be here to answer all your queries. Right on this blog, right on this article.

Having said that, i had a conversation with the man himself over the phone, and what a conversation it was. Kamal was off the hook. A pucca hyderabadi…..as Nagesh Kukunoor says in Hyderabad Blues ” once a hyderabadi always a hyderabadi”….Their a peculiar way Hyderabadis pronounce ” Cafe” and nah its not Ca-fey as is the usual norm, we pronounce it ” k-ef”….hadn’t heard that for a long time…..Kamal brought me back those memories…thanks for that Kamal.

Kamal is an Architect, Painter, Artist, Actor, Story-writer and has also worked an associate arts director for one of the leading and extremely talented director Yeleti Chandrasekhar who has made amazing movies like Aithe ( 2003), Anukokunda okka Roju ( 2005) and Okkadunnadu( 2007). Kamal has also acted in movies like Godavari ( my fav. director Sekhar Kammula), Chatrapati and is also the writer for a short film called ” I am Famous” which recently got nominated for Melbourne Film Festival. So, the first question you ask ” Why take such a risk with Confessions Of a Filmmaker”

Kamal

Over to Kamal

About Confessions of a Filmmaker

Its a story about this Assistant director who has been in the Telugu film Industry for 10 years and has seen it all and been there. He is absolutely unhappy about the pathetic state it is in. The nepotism, the castism, the vulgarity, the gore, the dearth of ideas, the hero worship…he has seen it all….cant take it anymore….decides to take his life. But, before that he wants to shoot, edit and showcase his last ten days of his life with the help of his friend ( played by Anish)….The idea is to shoot in a very very amateurish way….in the process he tells about the industry what everyone talks about in private but never have the balls to come out in open and say.

Anish kuruvilla once called him to “cafe” to narrate the story of this movie which he wanted to make and Kamal thought it would be big budget project. He couldnt react when Anish narrated the script. But seeing the passion with which Anish was narrating and the zeal in his eyes to make this happen made him support and act in Confessions of a Filmmmaker. The script was something which has never been touched, as original as one can get.

Anish

013.jpg

Where you afraid of repercusisions?

Not at all, came a pat reply.

why?

Why should i be? I had not come into the industry with the backing of any big-wigs
I know that i can make the movies i want to….i know i can act in the movies i want to…i am not dependent on anyone…so why should i be scared of the backlash?

023.jpg

Shooting of Confessions of a Filmmaker

The cast of the movie basically is of 3 people. Kamal, Anish and the Editor Praveen Boyina. They shot the entire movie in 29 days. It was really difficult to shoot on the roads of Hyderabad, what with all the traffic and Kamal having long dialogs…Kamal had to remember the dialogs of the other person as well, because of the traffic noise he couldn’t hear what the other actor was speaking. In all it was a pleasure working for the movie and they had a blast.

When he first met Anish for the role, Kamal had been pumping iron, so when Anish saw him he was like ” Dude..you do not look like an Assistant Director…”. Kamal had to shed a lot of weight, get a scruffy look…in fact he went to the order of not taking a bath for 3 weeks…..

025.jpg

027.jpg

043.JPG

From an Architect to an Actor

He is still very much involved with his Architecture, Loves it and is passionate about it. In fact he has done the landscaping of a new hotel on Necklace Road, Hyderabad called ” Moksha”….He did this in between his two movie projects. Coming from a very middle class family, he had to take up menial jobs in between. Their was a time when he went on a project and asked the producer to just pay him enough money so he can cover his cell phone bills…awww….

A secret that Kamal didnt tell me…but…hehe…he has sketched some awesome paintings after he finished working on ” Godavari”….its sort of a tribute to the movie.

031.jpg

What does future hold?

While working with Yeleti Chandrasekhar, Kamal came in contact with his assistant, Hunumanth….whom he has really high regards to….and believes Hanumanth will be a boon to the Film Industry….Currently he has worked with him to make a short film titled ” I am Famous” … and the movie has recently been selected for The Melbourne Film Festival. After that, he has a few very exciting projects in pipeline.

035.JPG

Sekhar Kammula

Ahhh…i couldnt resist asking him this. Kamal regards Sekhar along with Yeleti as the two most prominent and talented directors in the Telugu Film Industry….they do not budge to the outside pressure…know exactly what they want…and stick to their sensibilities….

The best news is. As i had the pleasure of talking to Kamal Kamaraju, i thought i didn’t want to be the only person taking it all….so asked Kamal if all the PFC’ites can have a chance to talk to him directly…and he AGREED

So, all you guys on PFC….you can have a one-on-one with Kamal Kamaraju, the lead actor of Confessions of a Filmmaker…right here….right on this article. Kamal will read all your comments, questions, queries and answer to you exclusively….so Shoot!!!!!!

Kamal, Imagine if Allu Arvind calls you and offers you a “dream” role in one of his superstar son’s movie with great remuneration. The only catch is that you have to publicly denounce Anish Kuruvilla and tell the public he made crap and you did only for money, will you accept that? ;)

Second question, You get to act opposite Balakrishna and in a scene Balayya has to shoot you with a gun. Would you be scared and hope that he is indeed using a fake gun?

And here is my final question: What caste do you belong to? Are you a “Naidu” or a “Reddy”! hahahaha!

  6. firstly sorry for replying so late was shooting the whole day for a very big pawan kalyan movie, not for a dream role though but definelty not one to be ignored…secondly like any actor every article in any form gets me excited and keeps my spirits high, and looking at these responses i must confess i am flying …

good question randramble i think as an actor thts one major hurdle.. i did mention this to om that my dabbling is part of the survival instincts. apart from that i cannot really think if we can device a constant money generator to budding actors each has to make it the tough way…i was once told by one such aspiring actor tht he is quitting coz he cannot be like me to dabble in other proffesions to fill his stomach…but i know a quite a few of them who have done anything and everything and reached up the ladder…

machchar kumar …thts nice to be on the lighter note…i will definetly dump anish take the money from allu arvind and then after the film releases produce anish’s next film with the same money..:)
    what say anish!!
balayya will never do tht …i know he is a good man :) ..
i am quarter naidu, half brahmin quarter, quarter chowdary and negilibly raju.. and who sits in a irani ‘cafe..’ on any given day

    dear surya,

firstly we never started this to gain money…it was a very burning issue that we wated to put on celluloid…now that we have done it..and there seems to be some appreciation for our effort ..it has opened doors for commercial viability…so any film persay will have its logical ending as long as its efforts are sincere to its script. Dnt forget tht a film like Black friday got its due respect because it stood as a winner through the dust and storm…

  10. Some Q’s Kamal sir

do you and the director intend to have mini theatrical/film club screenings as well???

My understanding is that the film caters to both telegu audiences and also non telugu audiences like us. Please correct me if i am wrong kamal.

Is a DVD release possible ???

I see that there were 3 of you.. how was the pproduction/art direction etc handled ?? were there any ADs ??

Is it driven by monologues ??? or are there any dialogue scenes as well ??

Sorry if some them are stupid Qs – but the film makes me helluva lot curious :-)

thanks for taking your time out of the schedule for us :-)

on a serious note..i’m sure u wl get many good roles in coming months from both independent and established makers of the industry..thanks to cofm

my ‘Q’ – did u feel a little awkward and unconfortable uttering those curse words and taking on the majority of the field, or just did it as a part of the job..

and in ur experience, how did u find the big names of film industry behave with fellow artists and crew members…

finally, do u believe that in coming years TFI wl also start making some sensible movies along with the commercial films they are adept at…

will have many options open after the internet release..dvd release, private screening will bocome obvious in the coming days..
yes it caters universally..we will be providing subtiltes so the language shudnt be a barrier..
ravi was like the right hand of anish who was the asistant, associate director/cameraman..the film needed to have just the rustic hyderbad as backdrop..so the art direction was much in the eyes of the cameraman..
the film is a dialogue between anish and myself…

i always was uncomfortable saying the curse words…or ‘was i trying to behave ‘..anyways in
the film i was to be anything but me..and also me..
coming to the big guys …most of them are very good …these are the people who have gone thru the art of cinema…some times we do come across people who behave odd and some trying to be good…i dnt know actually wht is this big guys…as long as they dnt behave as the food providers i dnt have a problem with the big guy tags…
they are adept at!!!…hmmm…but jai TFI has always made gr8 movies ..infact recently it is only from here from where the only prestigious award has been won as a film -VANAJA- at berlin this year.. cinema is universal..being regional is universal

  16. kamal chicha…your dialogue delivery (atleast in the trailers) is very natural. Now tell me, are these confessions true confessions from your perspective?

secondly, can we know about any new film ventures that you will appear in? and when is “I am famous” coming on internet?

being in germany I really miss irani chai…when you mention in the trailer about the “irani hotel lo…”..I remembered…yes it happens in every irani hotel…and sometimes gossip makes people come to irani hotels…so..is the lead character getting carried away by rumours or not so accurate falsetalk?

thanks for being patient with my questions…naitho kya kalletey?..ab kirkiri kaiku bolo..ek ek saval ka jawaab do main mun band kalletun.

you seem to be very talented and a movie buff..like we all are..

these confessions are true from the characters point of view..confessions of me would make it ‘confessions of an actor’…

I am famous will be under wraps till we finish the festivals – but are planning to have it on internet and DVD’s

yes may be sometimes gossip is in the air..but i really think irani cafe s more like a joint which one would want to share with friends…its the cheapest and the affordable meeting place for every section…infact i have seen bussiness dealings, land dealings whic run in crores …happening over a cuppa chai
…the gossips mentioned in the film are true to the state of mind of the character, who is a looser and expresing his digression on tape…and here he does not get carried away by the rumours but expresses his discontent on the way the sytem tends to run…which is like a disease to the cinema…

thanks kamal for taking your time out and answering all our questions…

i feel u have the right attitude to succeed… u r very matured enough not to loose urself to the character u played in the film…some people do get carried away when they play a radical character like this and start behaving confused…
yes, thank you for acknowledging that we too made and has the ability to make some wonderful films…but what’s diappointing is that not many in the industry care to promote or encourage them..may b they aren’t aware or see no use for them in promoting those kind of films…
another movie which got very positive response was ‘Sira” by thanikella bharani, good thing is that he has the advantage of knowing many people within the industry and was able to bring a star like bala krishna to say some good words about it…

hope some producers and people like nagarjuna come forward and back films like ‘vanaja’…atleast give them a chance to exhibit…

    HI Kamal and Om
thanks for your comments and answers. I respect independent cinema, after all..freedom is what we have claimed to achieve.
With cofm its a bit more than respect, because I am almost tired of shouting on idleburra asking people to demand quality rather than quantity. Its a new kind of idol worship out there and I seriously think parents should be the first to introduce quality cinema to their children….or else..all these annayaa’s..suprastars..will eat away their brains, as they have always been doing, and claim supremacy over a hysteric bunch of people.
Telugu cinema is not going to fall..because there are still some people like Sekhar, kamal, Anish..who want to make a difference and history has shown that people who want to make a difference, atleast succeed in making people THINK.

best of luck Kamal and thanks a lot to you and OM for making this interaction possible.

  22. prashanth actually,i am getting intimidated with these responses..i am a very small person…i havnt yet done anything of such magnitude to put my name among sheker kammula…
but yes the change is expected from each one of us and this remains constant…as a pure observer within this industry i would put it this way ..the state of telugu cinema is in the process of transformation.this will take some time, to come to some visible form…till then there will be a constant approach from (am including a couple of more names here) people like sheker kammula, chandrasheker yeleti, gunnam gangaraju, sheker suri, chandra sidhartha..definetly many more …who will and are trying to make films which represent their understanding of ‘better cinema’.. this includes appealing to the audience…
(and who are the audience here that we are talking of? …the not so literate commoners who are not hounoured social status, self dignity deprived by a section of community…)this may not be an evident issue in other developed parts of the world.
Now coming to the change …the change should be within each one of us…We see politicians trying to become rowdies here…(Look at wht TRS has tried doing to a film called operation duryodana, and how chief minister YSR stayed dumb over the atack over Paul)the question is not whether the issues raised were right or wrong but about the society not accepting criticism..not being democratic in the so called tolerant country…a point of view is suppressed by a bunch of rowdy sheeters..that is why whn some people say they didnt like some portions of anand or godavari, or anukokunda oka roju , ..etc ..i would say these directors are capable of overcoming those flaws too..i would actually try to question if they are flaws at all…
it is not an ideal world..and definetly it is only people like them who collaborate their ideologies with restriction to give a meaningful cinema to todays generation.. it is because of thse people tht telugu cinema might evolve to tell stories the way they should be told in an ideal world ..i as an actor like every one in the society should try being that constant called change…
like someone said…the river will remain murky as long as it is stagnant…let it flow to see it pure…COFM is not stagnant cinema.:)

In all this praise for different thinking personalities in Telugu cinema, don’t forget Prakash Rao, a superb filmmaker who made a beautiful film called “Belly Full of Dreams”. I think the Telugu title is “Bomalaata”. He thinks very different, has a very different sensibility although he hails from a very BIG telugu film industry family. He is one filmmaker who has a vision and capability to create change in the way Telugu films are made.

  26. Vijay Vijay says:

@rajesh – you are right. Bomalaata never came into the mainstream. It’s very unfortunate because it was a film with a lot of heart that told a very real and simple story. I found the treatment of the subject very refreshing as well. I remember we had screened the film here in LA for IFFLA and it won the Audience Choice Award for best feature. Prakash was so thrilled and I remember him telling me, “Hopefully at least now in Hyderabad someone will release this film. With an audience choice award I hope they realize that audiences do watch films like these”.

That said, there are plenty of daring minds in the telugu industry, most of whom have been mentioned in this discussion. The most important thing for these guys to do to change the face of Telugu cinema is to unite. They need to support each other, collaborate. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to survive.

yes confessions is a very small film in production value but as content and the spirit it is impressive

vijay i have heard of this film of prakash from a common friend and they were very impresive reviews. is there a DVD available?…i would like to,as i have many a time before, mention of VANAJA which has bowled me over..it is bold, passionate , reigional to the core…
having said these to truly survive in this part of the world the commercial flick seem unavoidable and i would never hesitate being part of them..but i would like people as vijay said to cometogether for a genuine cause..if our stars (most of them are my favourites too) can come across with atleast a film a year by moving out of their way …in setting a trend..i think we can c a sea change in the quality in the coming 5-10 years…and it sounds a good strategy to address the cause through the stars themselves..

Kamal, Vanaja is a truly beautiful film. But I would not slot it as a product of the Telugu film industry by any means. In fact the film has NOTHING to do with the Telugu industry other than its language. It was Rajnesh’s thesis film at Columbia University film school. The entire key crew are his film school buddies. All the actors in the film are non-professional actors. It was always a film intended for the festival market as opposed to a commercial release in Andhra Pradesh, which would have just been a bonus.

But those looking to be involved in different kind of cinema in the south can really get inspired from Rajnesh’s work and gather up the courage to go out and tell their own personal stories.

    Hi

One of my flatmate told me about your film. Its good to see such a film as audience like…especially overseas audience like to listen/watch/see whats happenings behind the scenes in film industry. I havent saw the movie yet and I am not clear about your ideas or views. I have seen your interview over net and want to know something. You mentioned that you have done your job as asst. director (is it?) and have acted in couple of movies. I have seen chatrapati and liked that scene …the kid get hurt and chatrapati comes in. If you remember, you get more and more aggressive (that have been shown by your facial expressions and the way you take breath). Trust me I liked it when I saw it and not to boost you up. What I’m really concerned about is..why talented people like you want to get into this mess? We I mean me and my coleagues today had a conversation about “natana naa raktham lone undi” topic. We audience are not that innocent to judge the acting of a hero or whoever based on the dialogues written by some tom dick nd harry. You have mentioned that middle class person who come nd settle as an actor feels bad about such kind of dialogues. I know it feels bad. We all (audience) know the difference between a country hen and broiler hen. Country hen is brought up on its own and broiler? (I hope you know what i meant). Thats how the legends like chiranjeevi, mohan babu and I cant wait to mention raviteja. Lets go back and see him in 1990s. We can see him last in one of the friends of rajashekar in allaripriyudu. He kept it within himself. Now we all know that he prooved himself and its prooved that ……its not the dialogues he deliver..its the way he deliver…its prooved and he is the producer’s delight (WITHOUT ANY INHERITANCE OR POLITICS) for next 10 years or may be more. My bottom line is…I’v seen you in chatrapati and you mentioned that you have worked behind the scenes and I (like other audience who are impressed with the brave move of yours with this film) impressed and I admire it too. Please dont think that you have made a big move in the industry. Kindly think about the future. We need talented people like you to keep up the name of telugu industry. I am afraid you might have lots of senior or junior enemies (which im sure you already have). Be very careful and as you know we cant trust the ppl in this industry…even the juniors how knows you could take the inputs from you and play the politics. Lets not think that we are now a celebrity because of the brave and clever things we made. Lets make sure and be careful….so that we can be celebrities in the future too.. good luck to you.

    Hi Kamal,

I have seen the movie COFM online and really do appreciate your efforts. I felt the movie only had a negative voice. Do understand the concern the writer’s have towards vulgarity in telugu cinema. But is it required to use such a Filthy language? I know its a personal opinion but when a Film is made, it needs to be on balanced note.Though the writer wants to show the negative side of the Telugu film Industry, it could have been shown much positive.
I like the idea of using Playcards and its really very impressive.

Your acting was really good in Confessions of a film maker. Now coming to meaningful cinema, there’s hardly any from India. An occassional film doesnt get produced, but cant find it anywhere to watch.

  39. hi sandeesh,

firstly thanks for all those praises.it did make my day. yes i did work as an asociate in the art department. for AOR and chatrapati…and yeah that particular scene did get a lot of applause for me and i cherish that…
Doing COFM made me realize myself a lot as an actor and as a person in the industry. A soul cleansing experience. i really agree with your point of view of an actor…i do agree that the actors mentioned have achieved what they have through their hard work…and i respect them to the core. infact i cant resist to mention that i was one of the many who got beaten up quite a number of times for a ticket for chiranjeevis’ movies as a kid…COFM particularly is a filmmakers point of view of how stories and scripts get manipulated due to the system that exists in the industry, and it is not that it is any new topic. We all have talked about it many a times..even in the industry from big to small everyone might have felt the same…COFM i think will only be a voice of such views…i regard your views on the actors..and i do not stand against the efforts of such persons in achieving their goals..as i too am a part of this game…Doing COFM is the best chance an actor could have got to explore himself(learn and unlearn)..That is the reason i did not hesitate to take it as a work/ assignment…I mentioned it many a time that i am too small a person and i am not trying to go against the system…as the system by itself is being built for everyones convinience…if you remember there is a dialogue which says’ no one is bigger than cinema’ it is exactly what it is…the system we built for each one’s convinience has started eating up the soul of film making..and i cannot stop respecting Anish just because he is questioning the system…i respect him as much as i respect all the others i worked with till date..Never did anish or myself think that this film would go this far..i am deeply moved by your concerns..let me assure you that you will see me in the main league in the coming days.:)

    regards
    kamal
