Confessions of a Filmmaker: Music Review

The music for COAF comprises of two tracks by Exabyssus, a band based out of Hyderabad.
The sound represents the same angst that is expected of this revolutionary film. Anish would be a better person to elaborate on how these songs have been used, but I was enamored and intrigued by the use of metal as the distinctive and symbolic sound in a film that captures the dark interiors of the industry. It would be interesting to figure the whole thing out, as the scratching of gray cells has already taken off since I put my ears to Exabyssus’ soundtrack for Confessions.
Song 1: THE CONFESSIONS THEME
The track starts off the angry mood with a striking matchstick, and the grave vocals set the angst in the head. I have never heard such a soundtrack for any Indian film, or any thing remotely connected to it. If there was a song for a revolution, it would sound similar to this.
Exabyssus is seated in a love of Metal.
The Confessions theme starts off as Limp Bizkit(Rollin’), moves into Creed, then takes off to Maiden(Tailgunner) and concludes into high tension leads act again reminiscent of early Metallica and Maiden.
Reality betrays me time n again
cant mark my surrender to these unbelievers
truth has died a silent death today
your vision and my reasons are partners in crime.
…
Slow guitar pluck-ins create a smoky ambience, and we are transported to a midnight highway ride. The sounds of the harmonica and a moody nylon guitar join the ensemble. The ride is still on and still very smooth at that. It’s a perfect world. Way too perfect.
CRASH! BOOM !! BANG !!!
All dreamy glasses collapse like…..a dream I guess. And its mayhem then onwards. Like a perfect world gone wrong.
It’s all Death metal psychedelia from now on.
I WISH YOU COULD SEE WHAT I KNOW IS FOR REAL
I CONFESS ALL I DREAM AND I WISH…YOU COULD FEEL.
wildest dreams compell me from within
reflects in the eyes in the mirror as i look
undyin grace of a fallen angel
my wings will fail me but i still dream
The mood swings back and forth between the electric riffs (highly addictive) and alternate metal. And towards the slower bits that follow this part is where you come to an Indian Ocean serenity. This is becoming truly encyclopedic now!
It evokes images of smoke rising from the sidewalks on an overcast day.
The leads towards the grand-finale are mind-blowing. They represent a grungy, dirty attitude, a spirit left writhed, a song left unheard. Or pure delight in being a rebel.
cast in a cage, set ablaze with lust
etched int he blood of the dust of the dusk
i stand alone in this future of yours
on a million forsaken dreams
The song has great visual potential, and is perhaps created in an assorted genre on purpose. But the blending in or switching between the two is so perfect it is all the more fun falling through and beyond the transitions.
It is hard to maintain the spirit alive through such a length, but this is a sheer beauty, smells of long hours being put in the dark. The kind of joy that comes after long depressive hours of breaking your head.
Song 2: SUNLIT CLOUDS
If you think this song would be any close to the intensity of The Confessions theme, you are in for some disappointment. But having said that, Sunlit Clouds has its own distinct soul in place.
This one is a strumming clapping/snappin track meant for those cloud kissed evening suns.
I got sunlit clouds shining on my head
As I walk on the road to nowhere
Looking at the world that turned me down
As I contemplate my views on ‘the man’.
I got my reasons so clear to me
But I won’t push you to understand
Look at the world through the eye
They made it look so obscene now
Pieces of my mind scattered everywhere
Gotta pick them up before I lose my stand
A fever, a dervish to make my day
A better place than yesterday
I throw a pebble at the dark with no hope
and I laugh at the reasons day throw me back
I got nothing to lose and a lot I can give
closer to nowhere and that’s where I am
There are no major transitions here. The mood is pretty much post-apocalyptic, an after-hours anonymity. The song scores in its simplicity and the words convey a heart on fire, trying to pick itself up in pieces.
The track disappoints after a brilliant launch into outerspace thanks to the Confessions theme. May be it is meant to convey a gloomy state of affairs, but it’s a clear depart from Exabyssus’ characteristic sound. They love their Maiden, they love their metal, and this lack of passion shows up in ‘Sunlit’.
An acoustic track, accompanied by claps/finger-snaps a la Extreme’s More than words, it does little to create images. The harmonica also reminds you a little of Silk Route.
ROCK ON, EXABYSSUS AND SHOUT OUT, ANISH!

Ah…
All those names make me nostalgic. But i got very disillusioned with the Metal scene. Very pretentious. Very snobbish. Everyone thinks they are more cool than others. And all the backstabbing. Besides I don’t like Metal anymore:)
Yasmeen….
She was like the Janis Joplin of the Metal scene in b’lore. There was another band with a female drummer. Durga was her name i think. They used to play a lot of RUSH. She was the vocalist also if i’m not wrong. Then there is my friend Chinmayi.

Ya, Durga was the drummer of Cryptic. even I am not much into the scene man, just keep hearing the names from my local friends, and also heard some from Chris, the ex-guitarist and singer of Angeldust, document done, came in touch with him during Masrah rehersals and did a play with him called Jungle Book 2.
