Crows Zero
it is takashi miike film. but you need not be apprehensive about blood, gore and sex. it is the most commercial film of takashi miike. and it is oh so stylish. yes violence is there. but it is more visibly mesmerizing than brutal. this is the movie i have repeat watched maximum number of times. the ending of takashi miike films are always something of the beyond. this movie is no exception in that. the end scene of ready to fly fists is my favorite, in the movie filled with amazing scenes one after another. actually you can not pick out a single scene as weak. movie sucks you in right from the word go.
movie is based on manga. i know nothing of manga. movie is about high school fighting. suzuran high is considered most tough school in the country. here students are engaged in taking the control of there grades rather than study. and the means to this is fist. in the history of school no one person has ever gained total control over suzuran high. with this aim of ruling suzuran high genji has got himself transferred to this school. he is son of a yakuza ganglord. who himself was a suzuran grad. but could not conquer it.
genji get the promise from his father that if he is successful in taking the suzuran high, he will replace him in the organization. the current most powerful man in suzuran is tamao serizawa. genji goes to him and asks for a showdown. but he is suggested that if he wants a crack at the top man of suzuran he has to follow the grads. first take control over lower grads than he can ask for serizawa.
genji gets an ally in his mission in ken. ken himself was a suzuran grad and now is a mid level yakuza. ken agrees to teach genji on how to get suzuran high. ken is a likable character palyed briliantly by yabe kyosuke. he sees in genji the man who can fulfill his wish. through genji ken lives his unfulfilled dream and try to forget that even as a yakuza he is not of much worth.
with help from ken genji starts taking the control of grad one by one and winning friends. both the fractions one lead by genji and other lead by serizawa are making there rank more and more powerful. some warlords of suzuran has taken the side of genji. others has gathered behind serizawa. as the climax approaches and final showdown is on the sight, you too are eager to know what will happen.
climax fight is one big statement in style. this film is dripping with style. beautiful to look at. its not usual takashi miike movie filled with bizarre and clues surging up from unconscious. still it is wickedly entertaining and keeps the testosterone pumped up all the time. acting, music, cast, cinematography don’t register themselves separately. they are mixed with each other to make one whole experience. and crows zero is one hell an experience.

I liked his Sukiyaki Western Django, although it gets a little boring at the end. A must see director.
Thanks for the post. Its hard for me to say that I like Miike movies because most of the time, it is persoanlly hard for me to see movies being so RAW. But, for the pace at which this director works, its amazing the amount of quality he can come up with.
I haven’t seen this one yet.. still trying to finish the DOA series :)…
