Cupid loves Dev Anand

Amma Said:

“When a man and a woman move together with love,
mutual understanding, and a willingness to be flexible
to the other’s needs, what develops is not equality
between them, but union – the union of Shiva and
Shakti. That is the world of joy. The man and the
woman become one, forgetting all differences. Each one
makes up for the deficiencies of the other. Through
love, each transcends any anger in the other; and
through forbearance, each accepts the weaknesses of
the other. In this way, both enjoy real freedom.
People need this blending of the masculine and
feminine qualities in life. The feminine power
complements the man, while the masculine power
compliments the woman. In a relationship, each needs
support, encouragement, and inspiration from the
other. They are not a burden to each other, but are
supportive and protective. To achieve this ideal, we
need to understand spirituality. Spirituality helps us
to forget external conflicts and to realize our inner
union, the essence of the Self.

By the merging of man and woman, Mother doesn’t mean
on the physical level. What makes someone a woman or a
man is the predominant feminine or masculine element
in that person. Women and men contain both elements.
Regarding a woman in whom a masculine nature is
dominant, we say that even though she is a woman, she
is like a man. Similarly, we look at a man in whom
femininity is dominant, and say that he is like a
woman. We don’t say this on the basis of their bodies,
of course.

The woman is unaware of the masculinity within her and
searches for it on the outside, in a man. Likewise,
the man doesn’t try to nourish the qualities of
forgiveness, compassion, and affection that lie hidden
within him. He imagines they are to be be found only
in a woman. Both men and women should awaken the
complementary powers and capacities within themselves.
Completeness is the union of the masculine and
feminine elements within ourselves. That is what the
ardhanarisvara image symbolizes. Only through this
inner union can we experience limitless bliss.

The goal of brahmacharya “Valentines” ;) is to realize
that both the male and the female aspects are
contained within us, and that the nature of our true
Self transcends any such duality. We cannot experience
this without constant spiritual practice. But people
today don’t have the patience for that. They consider
everything they see in the external world to be real,
and run after the mirage of sense pleasures, perishing
in that pursuit.

Materialistic cultures consider the relationship
between a man and a woman to be confined mostly to the
physical plane, but culture has taught us
to view it as a bond on the spiritual plane.

We should be talking about the unity of men and women,
not so much about their equality. It is difficult for
men and women to achieve equality at the body level.
If you observe the mental plane, there is a certain
amount of masculinity in women and and element of
femininity in men. Women shouldn..t blindly imitate
men. If, for example, they try to imitate men by
indulging in gambling, drinking, and smoking, they are
digging the grave of womanhood. Instead they need to
nurture the masculine element within themselves. This
is perfection. Through the inner enhancement of these
opposites in both men and women, both will move toward
wholeness and perfection.”

If you start looking at all the “chocolate” heroes or the “romantic” heroes of all time in Bollywood, i am sure there would be no list which would not contain the eternal god of romance Dev Anand. he was the Indian version of St.Valentines in reel life at least. He would mesmerize not only his lady love but also all his viewers with his mannerisms and his wooing style. a whole generation was inspired to ” propose” to their lady love, and the credit should definitely go to Dev Anand. Every movie of his that i recollect would have at least one romantic song that would swoon you over. Be it the Bechaara dil trying to find his lady-love or the peeping tom Johnny…

I would like to list a few songs of Dev Anand, which did wonders to him in the film and rest of the world in real life.

1. When you are single on the V-Day

” Hain apna dil to awaara, na jaane kiss pei aayega”

The movie Solva Saal. This song celebrates the single life of the romantic guy, who wants to find a true love. He doesn’t know where and how he will find it, but is pretty damn sure he will

2. When you can do anything to prove your love

“Jiya o Jiya o kuch bol do”

This song is from ” Jab Pyar Kissi se Hota Hain”….To all the love love birds out there, you might want to end the evening with your love by watching this exceptionally romantic great featuring Dev Saab and Asha Parekh..not only does this movie have plenty of heart filling numbers, but the whole package would make you go ” awwww”

Dev Saab is hell bent on trying to convince Asha Parekh about his love to her, and jumping off a moving train is no big deal.

3. Dealing with tantrums

“Accha ji Mein Haari chalo maan jaao oo na”
Love is a whole package, you have happy moments, you have sad moments..you have angry out bursts, you have lovey-dovey interludes…you have playful teasing…all these emotions make it what it calls ” Love”…And when the God and Goddess of Romance come on screen together, what do you get?

Even today, when me and my family/friends play “Antakshari”..and we get the letter “Aa”…the first song that comes to anyones mind is from ” Kaala paani”…the insanely romantic song about pacifying your love by saying the magical 5 letter word ” SORRY”…Madhubala..wow…can i say anything else here

4. You and only You

Confessing one’s monogamous love could be very tricky…but not for Dev Saab.. If he is in love..then he stays that way with none other than Nutan in ” Tere ghar ke Saamne”.. Confess he does…in this beautifully picturized song in ( i think) Golconda Fort…

5. ” Zamaana Kya Kahega?”

The “process” of romance aint complete without you two going out and stealing touches, a peck on the cheek or a kiss, trying to keep away from the prying eyes of the on-lookers…there must be some kinda thrill in it…Dev saab tries to convince this to Nutan in “Paying Guest”…this had been one of my fav songs for a long time….

On this note i wish all of you a very happy Valentines day, be safe, play safe ;). And to all those who haven’t found the love of your life yet…don’t worry, just go out today…V-Day is the best day to find someone of your dreams…just don’t sit at home and think…only couples should be going out…nope..there are plenty of singles out there who are just looking FOR YOU…

Hum bekhudi me tum ko pukare chale gaye….

The immortal cry for the beloved, drowning in the sea of intoxication with amazing voice of rafi…this song takes u to a different world…The film is kala bazar…

Tu kaha ye bata is nashili raat mein…

In foggy shimla if dev saab really had sung this song, i dont think any female would have been able to resist it…again rafi does the romantic trick with voice……absorbs you…”tere ghar ke saamne”

Pal bhar ke liye koi hum pyaar kar le…

Johny mera naam, hema, dev and millions of windows…persistance, my dear friend persistance…shall we say anything more? I think bill gates thought of MS windows after watching this song…

    @OM
    Nice post.
Dev Anand definitely got the best romantic numbers of his times.

Here are some more of his beautiful romantic numbers:

First of all, how did you guys forget to mention Abhi na jao!!!

Also ‘Aise to na dekho..’ and ‘kahin bekhayal ho kar..’ are awesome. Find me a sexier song than these two.

So many songs are popping up in my mind. Let me restrict only to duets. Here are some good ones not mentioned above:
    Deewana mastana hua dil
    Nigaahen mastana
Dheere dheere chal chaand gagan mein
    Tujhe jeevan ki dor se
Rimjhim ke tarane leke aayi barsaat
    Yaad kiya dil ne
    Aankhon mein kya ji

Dil Ka Bhanwar – is picturized in a studio. Only the long distance shots are done on the Qutub

It is my “most” favourite picturization of a song in Indian films.
