“Sirjee, horror film banana hai, uske liye characters karna hai aur storyboard bhi”, Pankaj told me over a bottle of old monk, in his usual casual style, while lighting a cigarette. Horror film I had done VFX for in the past, so this genre was not alien to me to work. Mentally I was gearing up for flying ghosts and what have you’s. “Karenge” was my reaction. After I heard the story, ‘THE DEITY’ had me floored walled and roofed!
Our creative ‘sittings’ were always mostly held at a very conducive Vijay Palace, the nondescript Udipi watering hole dishing out authentic south-indo-chinese cuisine. The kebabs were getting tandoored behind us. The form and meat of the kebabs, among other things, lent ‘inspiration’ to the imageries.
And of course we ordered portions.
Three weeks later and half a dozen of us (including Pankaj), a few cartons of cigarettes and a generous dose of the good ole monk, we had the black and white typed characters and story in colour.
We had fun!
Biju Dhanapalan or Biju D as he is popularly known is one of the pioneers of Vfx in the Hindi film industry. Starting his career in the field of computer graphics and animation more than 15 years ago, he has successfully executed visual effects in more than 75 full length features. His recent releases are ‘Straight’, ‘Bhootnath’, ‘Johnny Gaddar’.
Pankaj Advani
Biju created 3 D environments for a couple of sequences, where I could place a virtual camera and even change lenses. He and his team would draw me as I posed for various characters, then give them a distinctive look as per our discussions and fill in the necessary backgrounds, textures, colours and details.
Well, the film never happened, the producer slunk away and we were left high and dry with the script and the folio. I will make the film some day, but meanwhile, we’ve been discussing the idea of bringing out a graphic novel based on the presentation, or a comicbook series. I mentioned it to Oz and he immediately offered us a platform at PFC to share our work. Thanks boss.
So here it is, our first post – images of a few characters, one complete sequence and a note about the film. Yes there are rough edges since it started off as a storyboard, hope to make it richer as we develop it further.
We shall post more sequences, depending on the response here, not in a chronological order though, once every few weeks or so. Hope to have a constructive interaction with the readers.
Salut.

Confessions from a comic-book maniac: This is so awesome!!!!! Not only is the story itself fascinating.. but the artwork is gritty, and suits the macabre sensibilities of the kind of content Pankaj has in mind…
I read Virgin Comics’(now bought by Liquid Comics) “Devi” title(created by Shekhar Kapur) some time back…. that was a highly stylized retelling of our Indian mythology, marked by some first-rate artwork… it was still very much in the caped crusader mode… and some of the stuff was grossly over-simplified… This, on the other hand has the potential to go far beyond what “Devi” achieved…. kudos to Pankaj and Biju
Eagerly waiting for more from Currytown Comics!!!
P.s. The full screen format rocks… feels just like the .cbr files

the concept art is cool. u guys have redeemed urselves. keep it up. the storyboards are…storyboards. hope the graphic novel is more along the lines of the concept art.cheers

I guess full credit to Old Monk for kindling up all this.

“Macabre is normal, we are going beyond”
this sure is one ghastly grim violent riot.
Was just freaking out on Stephen Chow’s spoof/take/rip on Pulp Fiction and now this…..my day is made.
Pankaj and Biju AWE’FUCKIN’SOME

Pankaj and Biju … How could you think of such humor when someone’s head has just been cut off… LOL… Horror ho to aise….This is the first extreme graphically voilent horror stuff I have seen in our cinema concepts…dont feel like saying it… but keep it up.
Would love to see the storyboards develop into full featured colourful art…

Man!!!!! This stuff’s intense….Can’t wait for updates..

When you said graphic novel/comic stuff, I was wondering how you would display the story, sans the sound effects and camera movement, so necessary with horror movies.
An art like this and you dont need sound effects! Phew. Shudder to think what you would have done with this, with sound effects and camera movements.
loading...
By the way are comic books named graphic novels, just to increase the price?
loading...
Awesome man!! The initial art work was mindbending!! Dimaag ki ma behen ek kar dega yeh sab..
loading...
Fantabulous stuff!! Blew my mind away! Can’t wait for more…

Boy, you guys have taken care to give it a surreal movie look. The way first the heads of truck driver and his helper’s peep in, and then only to realize they have been beheaded. Must have taken a lot of drawings to entail continuity and to shrink the entire “scene” into one frame. Amazing!
loading...
Pankaj, where do you get all this stuff from ….maaaan!!!
Mindblowing and mindboggling..
Keep it coming…!!!
The world awaits more from you and Biju…!!!
loading...
Mind Blowing Sirjee
loading...
This is MINDBLOWING. OZ, you have hit upon a winner in Pankaj and Currytown now…may the association be an ALLTIMEKILL!!!
loading...
Thanks for the Concept Note.
It’s really beneficial for someone who is preparing himself for the dreaded “pitching the script” !
Keep up the macabre n beyond stuff…
Hallelujah….

Superb. Just a thought…I know the story board is at an incipient stage, but it would be great to surrealise the setting.I mean real settings with surreal edges.
loading...
Awesome images!
Hanuman chalisa lists daakini, shaakini etc.,
would we see more of them too?????
Passion for Voodoo .com banne vaala hai yeh!!

heartening response guys. true, its an initiative at the best, we’ll try and make it more than that. started off as storyboard, hope it goes beyond.
loading...
When is Kill 2 coming up??
loading...
@Anand, based on Pankaj’s idea of a non linear narration we’ll have Kill 4 next. I’ll publish it once we cross 200 comments on this one.
loading...
You were planning to film this and release in India ???
Ya right!!
loading...
film this in India, yes. release it here, no.

Very, very, very interesting and intriguing. I would lurrve to watch something like this. Loved the characters. But will be also keen to know how the story develops. I am ready to devour this in any form – comic book or an animation movie. Go for it Pankaj.
