The Deity : Kill 4I had just finished ‘Urf Professor’. A producer who liked the film, called me over to discuss a project. As I stepped out of my building, I bumped into a short guy with a paan stained smile, a spray-gun contraption strapped to his back – Kittu Keetnashak.

“Pest control?”

“No thanks, I don’t have a pest problem.”

“I bet you a thousand bucks, that your apartment is teeming with pests this very moment.”

I led Kittu to my apartment, unlocked the door and switched on the light. Sure enough, the place was teeming with cockroaches. The suddenness of our entry caught them off guard and they froze for a moment, staring at us. The leader of the pack had a huge brain, alas on his backside. The roach killer slid off his spray-gun, pointed the nozzle at the insects and pulled the trigger.

The cockroaches turned around, scurried into the bathroom, dashed up the shitpot and scampered into Harpic-land. I pulled the flush. They were just too many of them and the toilet got clogged. Kittu Keetnashak shoved his hand inside to unplug the jammed hole. A moment later he withdrew his hand with a scream. His forefinger was bleeding.

Rats inspire scripts“Do cockroaches bite,” I asked incredulously.

“This variety does.”

Fortunately the drain got unclogged and sucked in the cockroaches. Kittu sprinkled some insecticide into the toilet bowl and shut the lid, “don’t worry, they won’t be back for a while now”.

It is this traumatic incident that sparked off the ‘germ’ of an idea for Deity’s Kill 4 scene – death of the Tanner.

Tanner’s introduction in my script :

[scrippet]

EXT. TANNERY – DAY

At the bank of a polluted pond, stands the tiny dilapidated tannery, belching smoke from its chimney and surrounded by rocks on which, lay drying hides. The vats placed at the entrance of the tannery contain deteriorating scraps of hides in grime.

At the entrance of the structure, is a filthy ditch overflowing with slime, in the middle of which, an ugly but wiry man pounds and scours animal skin to remove flesh and fat. He is the TANNER.

Prelude to ‘Kill 4’ scene :

EXT. MOVIE THEATRE – NIGHT

The Raven lands atop the hoarding of a dubbed Hollywood film displayed outside a withering single screen theatre. The sound of the movie playing inside leaks out into the otherwise silent entrance, outside which are parked a few vehicles, mostly two wheelers. It is the late night show in a sleepy town.

INT. MOVIE THEATRE – NIGHT

The Tanner and the Musician watch the screen with rapt attention from their wonky seats as the buxom white heroine cavorts in the sea, her serene face covered with lustrous, shimmering droplets.

The frugal all-male audience scattered in the auditorium begins to whistle when her nipples become visible through the diaphanous shift.

She hears a sound – a boat is creeping upon the shore, an ugly Pirate standing at the helm. She rushes out of the water and picks up the scabbard lying on the shore.

The Tanner groans with disappointment at this new twist in the plot. It is apparent that he would’ve liked the bathing sequence to continue a bit longer.

He gets up from his seat. The Musician looks at him with enquiring eyes. The Tanner raises his little finger signalling that he’s going to the loo.

[/scrippet]

… … The rest of the scene is in the panels.

I recently ran into Kittu Keetnashak again.

“I bet you still have pest problems.”

“Sure I do, they do scurry out of their holes every now and then when its dark, but all in all, life’s good, work, even better.”

He slipped his visiting card into my hand, “call me anytime you need me.”

Nice looking card. K2 Exterminators it says! He seems to be doing rather well.

Pankaj’s entry to the office was by 2:30 in the afternoon.

Normally I sense his presence in the office by the strong aroma of classic mild… instead there was a piercing odor of pesticide.

As I was wondering about the new olfactory avatar of Pankaj, saw the ghostly image of Kittu Keetnashak hovering over his head like a beautiful angel.

I knew they were up to something.

“Sirjee chalo aaj kuch karte hain apan” says Pankaj followed by Kittu’s vehement approval.

All of us were at it.

Towards the end, there were around half a dozen Kittus in various shapes, sizes and stink, coaxing the mice and gazing at their monitors …

Yes we did finally clean up. Flushed them all down with ole monk at Vijay Palace.

    Pankaj Sir,
This is really nice…Very fertile imagination. Reminds me of Heavy Metal comics. Incidentally, I’m working on a screenplay (idea)
that has some elements in common with your first Post on the Diety.
I’d love to discuss it with you but I don’t know if its too soon. The framing device (skeleton) is up. Need to add a bit of flesh here and there.

The illusion part was amazing. And again in a split second, everything is real and more dangerous.

Always wondered that in case of horror movies there “could” be a distinct amount of unpredictability in that the evil itself can take any form and secondly what exactly will it do is also a mystery. This aspect has been made mundane in Ramsay and other cliched horror movies.

In diety, Pankaj has made full use of this and presented in a manner totally unpredictable. Wondering that someone who could have made Sankat City, could imagine something so brutal.

By the way what happeneed to Kill 1. Did that end there? Its incomplete. The last scene there was the killings atop a truck

Awesome film making! Remember some discussion about 13B being one of the best horror flicks of Bollywood – this one takes the crown, whenever its made. By the way – any title for this proposed movie?

awesome….are the backgrounds done using a 3d software and then the sketchwork is done on top? any reasons for a mixed media method?

      hi axw11

we were just exploring the possibility of pre-visualisation using a 3d environment..there were multiple reason to think that way.. primary reason was to fill the gap between film maker and “animators/3d artists” Pankaj became very comfortable with the 3d virtual world because it mimicked the real world filming by using different lenses and angles etc etc.. The 3d artist was getting to see how a film maker thinks and how to read between the lines..It worked they both were on common ground in no time and playing well ..

The sketched characters were expressing better ..

But why went to Kill 4 ? What happened to Kill 2 & 3? To keep up the suspense I suppose.

Akhil, it was mentioned in the first post that they will be presenting this in a non linear fashion. So the whole story will fit into place once all of them are out there!
