DAMfest 09 – The Event

The Digit All Movement was born as an initiative to study the fascinating merging of the art of filmmaking with new age digital technology, and encouraging new filmmakers by not only showcasing their talent but also exposing them to professionals who have daringly tested this technology to make their films.

“DAM provides a platform for young filmmakers to evaluate their work in the company of other filmmakers like them, helping them gain new perspectives about their abilities.” says Prof. Anupam Siddhartha, Deputy Director, SIMC.

We are overwhelmed by the support of the film community for DAM 2008, the nascent year which saw the avid participation of reputed filmmakers, both from the fiction and non-fiction genres.

Among the dignitaries present at DAM 2008 were directors Tanuja Chandra and Bhavna Talwar, producer and owner of Adlabs Manmohan Shetty, who was awarded the Professor Emeritus Award at the festival, veteran ad filmmaker Pushpender Mishra and Mohan Krishnan, Head, Corporate Communications, EFX Prasad Labs.

This year, DAM only gets bigger and better to encompass not only digital films, but also digital music, art and photography, for even as they are different forms of creative expression, it is digital technology that is linking them together, reinventing the boundaries of .

According to Director and Prof. Ujjwal Kumar Chowdhury, DAM is a tribute to the revolution happening in communication today in the form of everything digital: from photography, to art, to cinema, to music et al. Digital medium is making creative communication more democratic, accessible, anytime, anywhere, cost-effective, and futuristic with ease in preservation. We at SIMC, who believe that convergence of several media in the digital platform is the order of today and tomorrow, surely had to celebrate the journey of this technology and medium. DAM brings together, from this year, various digital expressions on one platform to underline this fact of integration furthermore.”

The awe-inspiring list of speakers at DAM 2009 include critically acclaimed director Madhur Bhandarkar, renowned documentary film maker Anand Patwardhan, Kunal Roy Kapoor, director of the digital film The President is Coming starring Konkana Sen Sharma, Marathi film maker Bipin Nandakarni, digital film maker, musician, ex Channel V VJ Luke Kenny, ex director of L. V Prasad Institute of film and television K. Hariharan, Bengali digital film maker Ringo, digital artist Archan Nair and CNN IBN Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand.

That’s not all.

An on the spot mobile filmmaking contest, a ‘Counter Strike’ gaming challenge, a workshop on digital art and photography, seminars on topics like the digital theatre revolution, the medium as a catalyst for social change, digital boom in regional cinema and animation and visual effects scenario in India are sure to be a crowd puller.

Seated amid gently rolling hills, DAM 09 will be held at the institute’s new residential campus at Lavale, making the most unique feature of the festival- midnight, open-air screenings in the pleasantly cool weather under a blanket of stars a warm memory for years to come.
