Global warming has taken its toll even on our beloved film industry. With alarmingly declining green cover and rapidly multiplying population, dancing around the trees and fluttering translucent coloured dupattas in fertile fields is no longer an option for filmmakers. So what do they do?

Tough to answer. After all, this is the phase in which Hindi cinema had been stagnating since we were old enough to recognise our too-good-to-be-true heroes. It became so naturally ingrained that we could second-guess the dialogues before the characters move their lips.

But then, a new brand of daring filmmakers without any camp to protect decided to keep the critics, cultural scientists and audiences jumping through hoops with their innovative and unexpected storylines. While the surrealism that surrounded the typical Bollywood fare invokes nostalgia in many, the experimentations with plots, characters and production charmed audiences and took them by surprise.

Intelligent savvy directors such as Dibaker Banerjee have cracked the code of creating cinema that echoes life’s darker side in a light manner. His films Khosla Ka Ghosla and the recent Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye resonate with the idiosyncrasies that characterises the society, subtly engaging the viewer in introspection not forgetting to tickle his funny bone.

At DAM’09, we promised you a great experience. And true to our word, we have procured the exclusive rights to screen the latest digital cinematic venture of one of our speakers, Dibakar Banerjee’s ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye’, before the official DVD release.
