Dard-e-Disco & Dard-e-Khisko

6 hours of film back to back can sometime be an enchanting affair but at times can also make you tired, fretful, and as there are 2 films can leave you with Mixed feelings. Saw OSO & Saawariya back to back in the same order and my head is a maelstrom of emotions. Since Oz has given me a user id and pwd to log on here and voice my opinion, thought will talk about these 2 movies.

OSO

Om Shanti Om, well what is left to be said. King Khan has been everywhere plugging his film and well its has its high points and you somewhat feel let down by seeing a man with some good skills letting the script go awry. Shah Rukh, how much ever the audience on PFC tell otherwise, is a entertainer and you do not feel let down by his films. In Om Shanti Om, you get that feeling towards the end what with all this punar janam crap

We have had enough reincarnation movies and you feel there has been enough said about that topic (like discussion of “No Smoking” on PFC) but No S Khan & F Khan felt otherwise and hence we have OSO. I would have really enjoyed it if was more autobiographical. I mean SRK’s tale is one that can leave you spellbound. A boy from nowhere (actually Delhi) came and took over Bollywood/Hind film Industry. This was not the case. The story of a junior artiste struggling to become an actor, hero, superstar would have been so much more interesting but no, they had to go the other way with this Punar Janam.

The insider jokes were good particularly the manoj kumar driving license, Sooraj copying dialogues and there was an easy camaraderie between S Khan & Shreyas. Deepika is from my town and also lived for many years in my part od the town and hence have a certain fondness for her and most probably will be biased when I say that she looked groovy and well tried to hold her own in a movie made for the superstar. She had very few dialogues and scenes but looked good in all of them.

OSO is engaging at some level but really not a well thought out film. I feel terribly sad when I see a talented star like King Khan not willing to experiment with new dimension in his home production and due to that will only work on a project which he feels will be accepted by the so called “dumb” Indian audience but might in reality have a turkey on his hands. Well anyway it has opned up in 2000 screens and he should make more than enough money before people realize it really is not completely good

Shah Rukh, we (read I) loved you in Swades, Kabhi Haan, Yes Boss and certainly in Chak De. Please do leave that mark behind as a super star and try to stay away from these really badly planned projects.

OSO would have been so much more interesting if it was about the journey of a struggler to a super star. Well everybody is not Chandan Arora and do not want to actually tell a tale.

Now will move on to I do not know what to call this, Saawariya

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has all these manifestations of a diva/prima donna in terms of his work and he tends to talk at length about his idea of creativity but well he fails in Saawariya like in so many of his earlier films. I have never understood this madness India has for him and how they think of him as a creative genius.

The movie is one interesting visual after another and well even that gets cumbersome after sometime as its like a soul less landscape. Where was the story. We have had so many triangle love stories and this is simply another one. We see Salman for about 2.5 scenes. The 2 debutants, Ranbir & Sonam Kapoor do not seem connected to the story line and and many scenes fall flat due to their acting capabilities but then they are STAR KIDS and will keep doing films till they die or become Directors. They have no problems with that. But as a viewer I had many issues with Saawariya. First, the bloody blue hue to each frame. Man it was so depressing and you started to feel sad as the movie progressed. We never really got to understand either Ranbir or Sonam’s characters as they were not really etched. The romance between Salman and sonam was not really clear. Why, where, How all kept popping in your mind. Then there was Rani. She was good but a little loud and like all other things in the movie got on your nerves after sometime. The other thing that got my goat was this strange obsession SLB has with east european films and how he tries to include many facets of it in every one of his movies. This is seen vividly in Zohra Sehgal’s character. She is so bloody Vibrant, it is humbling but no Sanjay had to give her an accent and it got jarring. Sheesh….

Currently, Hindi films no longer need a story (the soul) as its only about looks and feel and the camera angles, the way colour correction is done, the technicalities actually rather than the story. This is highly depressing as in reality, this Diwali we have had a Reincarnation and Triangle movie of which about 3 Zillion have already been made in India. with budgets like the way these 2 movies had got, they surely could have done so much better.

Life can be depressing when you do not get to see a good movie and for me the weekend looks bleak with having watched 1 semi good and 1 utterly bad film. I might have to go and watch some flick to get back into the groove. I am going to go with either Cinema Paradiso, Shawshank, Singing in the Rain..one of these. for the rest of you who have not yet watched these 2 flicks, well go on, have a dekko. You will feel short charge in OSO as it could have been so much better and disgruntled in Saawariya

Happy Diwali to all

Thanks & good Night, Deepak

Cinema Paradiso, Shawshank, Singing in the Rain …Hmmm. Intellectual stuff during diwali. Interesting. Unless you spout some of these movies, I guess you are not fit to write for PFC.

Sad..that you had to go through this..6 hours of torture. I can’t bear seeing Bhansali ’s Rangolis…

As far as Farah Khan’s credentials are concerned “Main Hoo Na” was for me a torture(except for shushmita’s erotic chemistry classes) with long lost brothers, little bit of Ramayana thrown in. You should have expected more unabashed masala from her and SRK. But..I wouldn’t mind another re-incarnation…as long as it is not projected seriously…please i hope not.

forget hoping for an autobiographical take …
i would have been more happy if they stuck to the ‘bollywood spoof’ (which waas working big time in the first half) till the very end..

Deepak Vekateshan bhai, I can appreciate you not liking the films, but I don’t really agree with you when you say

“I would have really enjoyed it if was more autobiographical…would have been so much more interesting but no, they had to go the other way with this Punar Janam”

But then it was never meant to be autobiographical. It was promoted from the outset as a Punar Janam Dastaan… if that’s not what you wanted to see, then why go watch it? Which brings me to:

“We have had enough reincarnation movies and you feel there has been enough said about that topic”

What I don’t agree with here is the concept that a concept can be completely played out. I mean, are we going to say that we’ve seen “enough gangster movies” so one shouldn’t attempt to make another? Or enough heist films?

But the kicker was definately when you said that Shahrukh:

“will only work on a project which he feels will be accepted by the so called

  7. Sourav on November 9th, 2007 8:48 pm

As I had mentioned earlier..movies released during diwali should be given a miss. here it is again.:d

Loved Saawariya n SLB obssesion for films

its quite an easy task to
see back to back films,n pass the judgement.but when ur on the other side making n living the dream for 2,1/2yrs,i dont think its that simple.

i have noticed a trend on PFC that people just are waiting for the stalwarts to make a difft film, n they would just find their way to write, more so called self proclaimed genius n intellectual blog.and the sad part is self proclaimed genius on watching films that are made on difft part of the world..as u told in ur blog.u want to say u dont come in the dumb indian audience..just because u have watched shwanks.then why have u been in the theatre for 6 hrs back to back.just to write this pathetic blog.the same indian want to get noticed or the intellectual want.

by the way i heard in an interview that its ranveer favorite film.so he also must be an intellectual like u.

now coming on to SLB ,i dont think u would be so dumb to know what’s the position of SLB in the IFI.with this honour look at his commitiment for films, with this kind of budget he could have easily made any film like HDDCS,MHN,OSO.i dont think any of the big star would have refused him.
but he decided to make a film with the newcomers, along with such huge budget.dont u find it as a courage or u (the so called intellectual) will say he was again being greedy to make his name so that people would say any one can give a performance like pro in SLB films.

Friend i pity on u(intellectual with dumb indian mentality),u look to me as a kind who will accolade scorcese for THE DEPARTED,but tear aprt RGV when he makes SARKAR,the matter of fact being
BOTH HAVE CHEATED n ITS NOT THEIR CREATIVITY.

what i want to say is films are made for the purpose of entertainment ,for some it will work and some it will not work.but before reviewing one should consider all the aspects.and as rightly quoted in some review.

SLB FALL FROM HIS POSITION HAS FAR MORE GRACE THAN THE OTHERS SUCCESS.

    Hello Manish,

I was not spouting stuff dude. Do not use the internet to stay behind a wall to generally run down somebody. I have seen enough masala movies and love the fare that MKD doled out in his time but you cannot simply copy an idea, keep telling throughout the movie that its not like that idea (References to Karz) and then do exactly that. where is the brains then. I loved andaz Apna apna and still watch it on DVD but OSO had nothing to tell in the second half and It was like an outright copy of Karz. That is boring dude and if for that I need cleansing by watching a good flick, that does not make me an intellectual nor does it make me dumb. It just means I want to watch a nice flick after watching 2 flicks go down the drain. See I am not sure what your prefession is, but am a aspiring filmmaker and know how difficult it is to get a budget or even a meeting for narration and when you see guys who have got that break not use it well, you feel sad but then am just a git right, who wrote something and has to be told off by Giants like you who most probably have not even seen that movie.

    Now to Tony Mera Naam,

I am not sure if you have seen OSO. If you have seen it then talk,. else buy a ticket, go see it and then let me know of your opinion. Read the post completely and then comment. I did not say SRK was a bad actor but he really chooses safe projects and due to this tends to make oft repeated stories. This is ture of OSO also. About it being a punar janam movies, well I too read the dailies and watch the telly , so knew about this movie’s premise but did it have to be so cliched.

Now coming to your idea of comparing a Punar Janam to a Gangster flick, well the comparison is triet but still lets see how it pans out. If every gangster movie made is the same and have the same story line, am sure you would not watch it and it applies to any movie even Punar Janam, See it and then speak.

About the dumb indian audience, he does not have to tell us that since he pretty much dishes out whatever he like. Before you start to use the examples of Swades, Chak De et al, please remember he was not the producer for those movies and only acted in them. So this comment as actors/stran in India never experiment and if they do a role about 10% from their usual roles, they are called genius and everywhere else in the world, people are moving the grade and this is why I felt so after seeing so many many movies in Hindi and also across the globe. So please before you just shoot off a comment, do understand the entire post and then, only then, if you feel you can tell so, please do else really man, come on…Pay that money for the ticket and then only then comment.

    Cheers, Deepak =; :-c

well..SRK has produced a handful of movies so far lets see ..

Asoka - definitely not a “safe” project
Paheli - Far from safe ! , no mainstream actor was prepared to do it
Main hoon na - working with a first time director that too a woman in this industry !! safe ?!
Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani - this was quite different from movies churned out around that time.underratedmovie in my opinion , a good take off on “his girl friday”

Chalte Chalte - maybe a typical SRK film

thats quite a diverse track record isnt it?

  14. Akhil on November 11th, 2007 12:01 am

    yup, anybody who disagrees hasn’t seen the movie :w;

guess ratings speak for themselves haa :)>-

    Navneet,

Who the BL@@dy hell do you think you are Mate coming off like that? You have no right in hell to make personal comments on me or on my movie viewing sensibilities. I am not even sure if you saw this more or was it something else you saw.

Why does every movie you do not understand have to be mellifluous and lyrical. I mean what was the bloody premise in Saawariya.

Before you jump off to some conclusions about what I like in hindi & english flicks, at least understand what I was trying to say. I am sure you understood what SLB was saying as I for hell did not understand it. Answer these questions if you saw the movie

why and where was this love between Sakina & Iman? Who was Iman? Why did she like him for
Oh..we should just assume that every love affair on movie is a chemical reaction rather than a time bound relationship. I mean we do not show Wham Bham thank you Ma’am but our love affairs on film are always like that. The girl sees the guy and then falls for him. This was the premise for the love between those 2. now for the other 2 of Ranbir & sakina. Why ?? when where did they feel they like each other. When did he feel she was the one and vice-versa. Again a Chemical reaction..

Man, just because there are some beautiful landscapes, blue tinged screens one after another, it does not make this movie an art house classic. Grow up dude and watch more flicks.

Coming to my love for Shawshank, just becuse I like a movie and somebody else likes it does not mean either of us can make it. We just like it. so what if Ranbir likes it. Doe it make it more special or less English. This is not a war between Hind & English or ours and theirs. Its a sad state that the great directors of India only pick up projects that are so oft repeated and not one tries to make something out of the ordinary. I am a FILMMAKER and know what goes into making a film. When you see a budget being just thrown at making a look good movie, you realize what a sodding waste it is and then to top this pie, comes in somebody who stands by it but runs down who feel otherwise.

Now coming to the concept of a remake/inspiration, Agneepath (not sure if you have even heard of this movie) was a movie inspired from Scarface and it was really good. The indianization of the plot, the rich character (although Mithun was a little overstretched0. This was fantastic work and I loved it. Of course it was not technically great with beautfuly cinematography and rich landscapes as that is only the story nowadays.

BTW, I loved Sarkar and most probably have watched more RGV flicks than you. so am not going to give your comment another look

Understand that I wrote this review after having seen the movie, paid money, seen a bucketload of movies, worked in the industry for sometime and then only then did I voice my opinion. You liked it…Two Thumbs Up dude. but that does not mean I should also like it and just because I do not like it does not mean I am anti Hindi, follower of some cause, pseudo intellectual et al..

Grow up dude and stop making these comments like the quote done by another intellectual like you “Either you are with us or against us”.

now put this in your pipe and smoke it

    cheers, Deepak

Hi, I really liked your review… but most of all i liked your comments above. You’ve managed to put my feelings to words - that not liking Saawariya or liking OSO and vice versa is not a life and death issue - or in this case commercial vs artistic & profound. Keep up the good work, friend and lots of luck.
    :)>-
    Ciao
