Dasavathaaram - 10 Kamals but where is my Kamal
Chaos theory…butterfly effect…..existence of God…….an unstable biochemical substance which may destroy the world….Tsunami…..Now these words blabbered by the voice-over and that too in an Indian Movie can make anyone excited …..but wait there is more…we have a George Kamal Bush who does a rajni to get up from his seat……we have a Japanese girl who speaks Tamil….we have a Punjabi Kamal Bhangra singer who apparently does a bhangra in Tamil……..There is a extended looooong chase which starts with 15 mins in the movie and finishes just mins before the movie ends……and ya there is Mallika Sherawat……
The story begins in an era where Vishnu clan and Shiva clan or you can say cults are trying hard to vote down each other…..The leader king of Shiva Clan wants to move the Ranganatha idol ..errr not move..to throw it into the sea……He is opposed and fought by none other then Kamal who is a member of Vishnu clan…….Apparently he is alone and can’t fight for too long and is held …tortured and thrown in the sea along with the idol……Till here the movie seems outstanding and you are thrilled and glued to your seat….but what follows is a Rajni movie…i don’t say Rajani Movies are bad..just i didn’t expect Kamal going that away…..Ok now back to the story….
Present century…Kamal 1 is a scientist who has developed a dangerous biochemical bomb but the bad men badly want this “biological” bomb….so kamal 1, after knowing their intentions steals the bomb from his own lab and is on the run………Kamal 2 is a bad white American man who is hired to nab Kamal 1 and get the the bomb……. kamal 1 takes refuge at his friends place who has a Japanese wife……But the kamal 2 reaches there ,kills kamal 1’s friend and his Japanese wife, but somehow Kamal 2 escapes……now please don’t ask me how ?? …..kamal 3 is father of the Japanese girl…..ya kamal 3 is a Japanese man ……who wants revenge now …..Kamal 1 flies away to Chennai India …followed by Kamal 2 …In Chennai , Kamal 4 is the CBI Officer,who thinks kamal 1 and Kamal 2 belong to same gang and starts looking for them …so kamal 1 is on a run….kamal 2 is chasing kamal 1…..kamal 4 is chasing kamal 1 and kamal 2……..kamal 3 reaches there to seek his revenge….and on their run , they meet more kamals……..and ..hmm….ya , that’s about it ….wait ..wait ….there is more….Dr Kamal has found cure for cancer…….if you have a throat cancer…..shoot a bullet through your neck and you will get cured, since the bullet will take care of the tumour……..now that i didn’t expect….the movie has some more such “so-bad-that-you-will-laugh” moments……..And how is this present century “story” related to the History lesson at the beginning….hmm …That’s the mystery…mystery so big, even the makers don’t know …
The special effects of the movie are really very bad …..everything they wanted to show as spectacular looks fake…underwater sequence fake…Tsunami and aftereffects fake…..even the damn helicopter looks fake…..When so much money is thrown to make this movie…..i just can’t understand where did this money go ..other then the locations and makeup (which looks forced at times), there is really nothing to make it spectacular…i was terribly let down by the cgi.. the special effects reminded me of Ramanand Sagar’s Aankhien which used to come on DD few years back……..Music has nothing new to offer in fact couple of tunes seemed to be “inspired”….Some of the fight sequences are beautifully done while some of the sequences are WTF sequences….As expected kamal Hasan does justice to most of his roles…specially the CBI kamal….you will laugh at his jokes…his accent ….his English….Mallika sherawat is hardly there in the movie…Asin does a good job…..Direction by Ravikumar is great and so is the cinematography…..the movie fails because of the script…there is no script in the first place……it’s just big talk and nothing near of being substantial….The climax is lame……
Saying that, if you go in with an open mind and don’t expect a lot, neglect the sci-fi angle and technical glitches and the “story”……you may just like it for the acting and good dialogues and ofcource for Kamal Hasan…………for me it was a big let down…..

I agree with you, the camera work was good and kamal acting was good, however the climax and that bullet carrying the cancer away were something which I can never understand.. heheheh
huh!! was expecting this. kamal hasan needs to take out me, myself n more of me out of his films. wish clint eastwood would write a book for all the bachchans n the hasans….how to act, direct and make films like film vetrans!!!
none the less…would go and watch….
PADMASHRI…..eeer….Dr. Kamal Hasan
Hey anand, wonderful read. Laughed at your intended perplexity, complete confusion and maniacal rendering. Damn funny. Phoenixnu I agree and believe that KH since that film in Bollywood, on gandhi… forgotten the name… is no longer an actor but a performer. He never fits into a role but force fits KH into every role. Needs to take a sojourn, replenish the inner fire and juices. He is an awesome actor. Refinding that actor in him is whats needed.
Good article Anand! Great Read!!!
I havent seen the movie, but the review could have been better!!
to write a screenplay for 10 characters .. with different backgrounds, linguals .. with most of the scenes havin them appear together .. and link history with science with religion and atheism and then a natural calamity … its a fun ride … an adventure Mr jones wud have loved to be a part of !!!
It has its share of flaws for sure !!! but the effort needs to be applauded !!! its one hellava movie … “indianna jones, national treasure, or neother hollywood adventure flick (except raiders of the lost arc) can kiss dasa’s ass !!!”
I know i am die hard Kamal hasan fan but that does not blind me from identifying a shit .. i hated “abhay and mumbai express (to an extent )…
Medium!
write a post buddy!!
kamal hasan film has 2 b seen for his acting nd if acting is gud nd when he acts in 10 roles nd still acts gud then its a gud film,
all sp effects may die flat…doesnt matter.. ll c 4 kamal hasans acting only… who cares 4 sp effects…
this is silly exaggeration that sp effects can b so outdated as shown in ramannanda sagar ankhen… sp effects were in hey ram also… can they b older than hey ram?
such review on 1st day of film is not balanced review…
why kamal is needed if people ve 2 go 2 c scify angle? nd if acting is gud then how film can b let down?
Most ridiculous movie ever.
I was expecting that it would suck but not like this. It was a torture to sit through and anybody who gave a positive review for this movie, please expand on why.
I know they worked very hard for this movie but for what?? It is loud, noisy and pointless exercise in special effects and the real kamal’s acting is masked by the tonnes of plastic skin over his face..for every role he donned.
@Kishan
No one was expecting a super duper serious meaningful movie. It is a KS Ravikumar movie!
It had good masala and entertainment factor. Fine, the Afghan Factor was a bit unwarrented for, but each of the 10 roles were done nicely, the body language, the accent was perefect for each.
Medium,
can you please tell me how was the history related to present story….seriously didn’t get it ….
@Anand
It is more a question of faith. People with differing faiths and what we person would do for the sake of faith. While there are those would follow it blindly and place faith over life, there are some who struggle to find a balance between faith and reason.
8 roles out of 10 - the faces are covered with plastic make up. And the make up many a times is not as good as Shanmugi mami - thats a disappointment.But who said acting is only about facial expression - Watch Kamal differentiate amazingly with voice modulation and body language. Did I notice similarity in body language between Fletcher and Nandu of Alavandan? The movie talks about the butterfly effect…and a series of coincidences follows…Whenever there is a coincidence that ultimately leads the vial to the beach is brought about by a character played by Kamal..Think about it. (Including George Bush who decided not to stop the plane that is over Iran/Afghanistan but instead decides to seek the help of Dr. Manmohan Singh thereby letting the vial reach India).
Get over the initial disappointment guys - there are priceless moments in the film - one such moment is George Bush does not know what is NaCl and when his advisor(played by an Indian!)says it is Sodium Chloride, he gives a thoughtful expression and then breaks into a stupid grin and starts waving at people!!
wait guys
i knw but cant agree with one who said tht cg in movie looks like a dd serial dont think so they may not meet the hype but gud in parts ,a feel some scene r far superior thn any other indian picture nad cant even think of any other actor tht can pull of thes many characters with grace,vasnavite char is is best although a couple of charecters are unbaked but mind you s film screenplay will have some limitations ,grt effort by kamal
There are some pseudo intellectuals who just look for logic and rationale behind mindless masala entertainers… I am surprised to see someone doing the same here… First of all Kamal an actor - his make up was preventing people to have see his “glorious” facial expressions… phew!! When Kamal acts, the whole world know he is acting… he was never a natural actor.. You miss nothing, hidden beneath his face laden with make up.. Again he managed to give different body languages and voice modulations to each character, which is more than enough to differentiate… It’s a film in shivaji genre, which is nothing but a good masala pot boiler, and in that yardstick it fits to the T
Krishnakumar, Just out of curiosity, I want to know who in your opinion is a “natural” actor?
@krishna kumar
hi man i really dont understand this natural actimg thing u coined
a person is called natural actor when he potrays emotions perfectly
phew u missed it my frd whn u say kamal isnt
nyways opinions vary
Its a nice movie and my unknown friend Rakesh loved it
@ Krishna Kumar
Could you please let me know the meaning of “Natural Actor” in your dictionary???
@ Krishna Kumar - “natural actor”? Does this mean acting like the way Shivaji Ganesan, MGR, Gemini Ganeshan and their ilk did? Theirs was way way way over the top and yet audiences down South just loved their performances.
Don’t think Kamal fits into this category…
Oops…I meant that Shivaji G and his ilk were not “natural actors” if thats what you meant. I guess the prev post said it other wise…
