Dasvidaniya is a must watch!

Dasvidaniya Movie Review

I have been praying for her death. Almost everyday. The last time I met her, she could not recognize me or recall my name. I tried hard. But after few minutes, I gave up. Could not see her in that condition any more. She is quite old, completely bed-ridden with a fractured leg, has blood pressure problems and some complex disease that’s killing her brain slowly. Doctors can’t do much. They don’t want to operate as anything can happen. Her only son is also praying for the same.

Death is a strange thing. You don’t think about it unless you face it, some way or other. On my way back to Mumbai, all I saw was old men and women, and kept thinking about the all those days i have spent with her. so many memories. Train, bus, road, restaurants, flight. Everywhere I saw the same. People struggling to walk, eat, sleep and talk. Everything that was so natural once, now looks impossible. Depressed me a lot. But then…as a friend said…why am I talking like Buddha ? leave it there. Whats the need for the ‘pause’ button ?

Dasvidaniya also deals with death. In a way, that will make you smile. In the past, many films have done it beautifully. So, whats new? Well, it stars one of my favourite actors vinay pathak. Check out any film of his in recent past, ( aaja nachale, khoya khoya chand, Johnny gaddar, manorama six feet under, via Darjeeling or whatever else) he is superb in every film. And then came kailash kher’s mumma…..meri ma. I give fuck about arrangements and orchestration and the guitar riffs at the 37th second. It’s all about an honest voice and a heartfelt song. After Rehman’s lukka chuppi in RDB, this was the one that did the magic for me. Unlike many of my freinds, i couldn’t connect with TZP’s ma song. Kailash’s earthy voice has that charm which is difficult to find.

Amar Kaul (vinay pathak) makes a list of ten things to do before his death. And the film revolves around it. It doesn’t try to be intelligent, smart, cool or sexy. Like the mumma song, the film is just honest and heartfelt. Vinay is there in almost every frame of the film. And he manages to moist the eyes and bring smile, both at the same time. Its quite a daunting task. But acting has never looked so effortless and sincere.

The supporting cast consists of gaurav gera, sarita joshi, sourabh shukla, purvi joshi, ranvir shourie, suresh menon, rajat kapoor, suchitra pillai, neha dhupia n what’s that actor’s name who was the neighbor in Manorma six feet under…KK…ur fav guy…???. The usual suspects of our desi indie club! It’s the Great Indian Comedy Show gang. Director Shashant Shah used to direct the show. Sarita joshi as the cranky mother, gaurav gera as estranged brother and neha dhupia as childhood love, they fit the bill perfectly. The best part of the film is that every emotion and every act is underplayed. Loved the dialogues (arshad syed). They are not clever or smart one liners but will make you laugh. Amar’s mundane life doesn’t changes into a rollercoaster ride but its a journey thats beautiful and worth watching.

And those of you, who are obsessed with Dostana, do try Dasvidaniya. There are some small and lovable references to KJo’s KANK and KHNH.

As his guitar teacher asks him, Any problem with life ? He says, life is my problem. As I left the theatre, I kept wondering how all of us will go back to our normal life, daily chores unless it will be time to say dasvidaniya. The ‘pause’ button is difficult to press these days. But then, whats the point ? For some soul searching. That’s it ? Aha..Keep it for some other day. Am still wondering.

There is this new way of writing reactions of movies that I’ve observed on PFC and it is really encouraging to see how deeply a movie affects such writers that they reflect the movie in their own personal lives and then react on PFC’s pages… first I saw it in Pratim’s observations of Rock On, and now it’s your thoughts on Dasvidaniya…

This is the writing that pulls people up, to change their thoughts (kaun jayega non-star movie dekhne) and makes them walk to the theater and buy that ticket…

    Loved your movie reaction… Amazing!!!

Vinay was awesome in Jism as well…many people forget his role in that movie..

Let me tell you that while I was booking my ticket for Dostana on thursday for friday night ( just saw it a few hrs back) , I also got my ticket booked for Dasvidaniya for sunday & your write up only re-iterates my view of what I had been feeling for the movie.I always believe that one must encourage such movies also.I’ll probably write more on the movie after I finish watching it.

Too bad Dasvidanya is not opening in theaters near here. Vinay Pathak appears so utterly changed in every role. Lovely review.

All power to this film, wish it outruns all other releases.

    Truly heartfelt Somen.

Thank you bro. Really touched by your review. Dasvidaniya is as much your film as it is mine. We have not made this film for the masses, classes, festivals or the critics… But simply (and almost selfishly) for ourselves…and people who think like us and view life the way we do.

These may be a hundred people, a thousand or a million. I dont know.. But I do know that this film is for them, and as long as they see Dasvidaniya and connect with it, .. our endeavour will be well worth it.

    Thank you once again. Dasvidaniya

one of the simplest but fantastic movies to come out…
its just brilliant!! vinay pathak now has his own league….
ranvir shorey shows what he is in just the one scene he is in… and joy fernandes is superb too….

i hope this movie atleast find its audience against the juggernaut of dostana… for which SOMEONE writes :

“A word of appreciation! It requires courage to fund a project like DOSTANA. Karan Johar, the producer, deserves to be lauded for treading the untrodden path.”

Plz. Plzzzz watch the movie guys. The movie needs it.
It was a very emotionally overwhelming experience.
The scene where Amar stands outside nehas house in the rain and….. is onr of the best scenes of recent past. It made me shed tears. VInay Pathak delivers a awesomely endearing performance, which will deeply move you.
Guys, plz spread the word of mouth.
The film compelled me to write a mail to Lemontea productions.

  21. Phoenixnu on November 15th, 2008 1:26 pm

thnx guys. do watch this one.
@Om - vinay pathak n yashpal sharma r my fav actors among the current lot. they r champs in any shitty film. and may b thats why m biased! similarly saw bucket list for nicholson. but then the film is fucked by typical hollywood stuff..raising the bar, three act structures, back story and morgan freeman’s voiceover…one mor film that starts with his vo and m done.
    @sethumadhavan - glad u did. what do u say ?
@arshad - more power to u guys!! nothing can be better that that..making films for ourselves…films that we wud like to c. all the best. n hope the industry doesnt corrupt that thought.
@manu - do let me know what u think. m waiting.

  22. Sethumadhavan on November 16th, 2008 7:16 am

    @ Pnu

Yes I saw the movie & I must say I was moved. It was a simple, honest & wholisitic effort. Not only was Vinay Pathak sincere, he was also ably supported by the rest of the acting team.Wouldnt say anyone was bad.The music by Kailesh-Naresh-Paresh was heart rendering.

And as the end credits roll, when you had the cast coming on & sharing their thoughts on their wishlist before death, I was bowled over once again.Kudos to Vinay Pathak & Shashant Shah.Definitely such movies must be encouraged.

  23. 32 on November 16th, 2008 9:53 am

agreeing with the fact that movie is straight from heart & reaches to heart, couldn’t help myself passing snide remarks while watching. I fear that this should not turn into category of the simple but overrated movies. Could have been much better (it is good! not better) but seems lacking its spirit in some places! Best wishes for film & film makers! Please keep on bringing such films!

  24. Tushar on November 16th, 2008 10:10 am

Great film. It raises the bar for ‘indie comedy’. There were people in the theater who came expecting a Bheja Fry and I couldn’t be happier when I saw them walk out with a satisfying look, albeit with a tear hidden somewhere. A film on death yet does not go melodramatic. That is its victory. Another great thing is how they have made it a film, not a TV soap. It stands out as a big screen experience. So many minor nuances have been so well taken care of - a walk on the streets, the discomfort you feel while expressing anything to someone you were frank with long ago but now things are different, the superb irony of a Deewaar spoof being shot and the guy’s real life has shades of Deewar itself, the songs, how the director has underplayed what could be a stereotyped narrative, all kudos to the team. Wonderful film, and well summed up review.
Not one dull moment, intelligent acting by the best possible cast, lots of detailing so correct(IPL), I will watch it again, and not like Bheja Fry where I knew where will I laugh. This film will surely go places.

    beautifully written

  27. Pratik on November 24th, 2008 11:35 am

I started watching this movie at 12:30 am last night hoping to stop it after watching a half hour or so. Bad idea because I ended up watching the whole movie. Office ke liye late uthha aaj subah lekin still not regretting it one bit.

Btw, the actor who played the neighbor in Manorama and the office colleague in this one - is it Brijendra Kale you are referring to? He was also in Mithya and Aahista Aahista.

  28. kshitij on November 24th, 2008 12:57 pm

It’s a film not to be written about, neither a film that I would like to tag with words that are losing meaning when used in isolation. It’s a film that has to be given a chance by every individual and then it is to be felt. No words can do justice to the living one lives while watching a movie with so much heart. So live it through. Am doing it again in a theater after watching a very clear pirated print. Dasvidaniya.

    Arshad Syed @ 8,

Awesome writing Arshad! Let it not be mistaken for an act of patronizing but your friends/acquaintances must be a lucky lot. What a sense of observation, what eye?! Says a lot about you Arshad. Thanks for zooming in for that microscopic (almost) analysis, and pulling out at the right moment for that bigger picture. It is a balance here that makes great filmmakers great, and it is logical that it comes with time. Not for the debutantes like you! (pardon me if I am wrong). Thanks for employing cliches at the right moment because for all the talk of realism that we do, good cinema cannot do without cliches, if used properly. Reality in cinema is a trash concept to me. Thanks again Arshad for this wonderful gem.

    P’nu, heartfelt article that was.
