David Dhawan-The remake King

Revised version

David Dhawan, the king of Comedy films. He is a graduate from National Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), in Pune. He studied editing there and after graduation he entered the Hindi film Industry as an editor. But before that itself he had connection with the film industry. His brother Anil Dhawan was a famous actor in the 70’s who acted in film like Hawas, Piya Ka Ghar, Nagin, etc.

David Dhawan’s first film as a director is Taqatwar in 1989. From then till now David Dhawan has made many films out which most of them were superhits. And almost all of them were remakes. He had a good team to help him make the films better than the original. Some were better.

Here are different types of remakes that David Dhawan has done.

1. Hollywood inspired - David Dhawan had indianised some Hollyood movies very well. Here are the list of those remakes

Jurrat - The Untouchables
Eena Meena Deeka - Three Fugitives(Remade in Malayalam also as “Adheham Enna Idheham)
Yaraana - Sleeping with the enemy(there are many versions of it)
Deewana Mastana - What about Bob ?(Remade in Tamil as “Tenali” *ing Kamal Hassan, Jayaram)
Hum Kisise Kum Nahin - Analyse this
Yeh Hain Jalwa - Secrets & Lies(Not sure of it. It was like Khabie Khabie also)
Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya - Cactus Flower(Goldie Hawns first film. Remade as “Dil Ka Doctor” also)

2. Old Bollywood inspired - These are remakes of old Bollywood films. Some of them became bigger hits than the originals. Some of the Hindi originals were also remakes of South Indian movies.

Gola Barood - Khan Dost(Shatrughan Sinha, Raj Kapoor)
Aag Ka Gola - Himmat(Jeetendra, Mumtaz)
Aankhen - Do Phool(Vinod Mehra, Mehmood)
Hero No. 1 - Bawarchi(Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bhaduri)
Haseena Maan Jayegi - Pyar Kiye Ja(Shashi Kapoor, Kishore Kumar)
Dulhan Hum Lejayenge - Ek Phool Char Kaante(Sunil Dutt)

3. Hollywood+Bollywood inspired- These are films in which one half of the film will be copied from Hollywood and the other half from Bollywood.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan = Bad Boys + Angoor
Kyun Ki Mein Jhoot Nahin Bolta = Kaamchor + Liar Liar
Chor Machaye Shor = Blue Streak + Golmaal

4. Telugu inspired - Most of the superhit films in Telugu are remade in Hindi. David Dhawan also remade some of them.

Coolie No. 1 - Chinna Alludu (*ing Suman, Rambha, Aamani)Correction made by Jai
Judwaa - Hello Brother(*ing Nagarjuna, Ramya Krishnan. Remake of Jackie Chan’s Twin Dragons)
Saajan Chale Sasural - Allari Mogudu(*ing Mohan Babu, Meena, Ramya)Correction made by Jaiganesh
Mr & Mrs Khiladi - Aa Okkati Adakku(*ing Rajendra Prasad)
Banarasi Babu - ……(*ing Jagpati Babu, Ramya. Forgot the name of the movie. But it was remade in Tamil and Kanada also)
Loafer - Assembly Rowdy(*ing Mohan Babu)correction made by Jai
Kunwara - Bavagaru Bagunnara?(*ing Chiranjeevi. Remake of A Walk in the Clouds)
Mujhse Shaadi Korogi - Nee Premaki(*ing Vineeth, Abbas, Laya)correction made by Jai
Shaadi No. 1 - Sandade Sandadi(*ing Rajendra Prasad, Jagapati Babu and Sivaji)

5. Bhagyaraj Inspired - Almost all Bhagyaraj’s Tamil films are remade in Hindi. Anil Kapoor played the lead in most of them. I think he must have been the one who introduced David Dhawan to Bhagyaraj. But among these remakes only Raja Babu became a scuccess. Bhagyaraj was given credit for the story in all the films.

Andaz - Sundara Kaandam
Raja Babu - Rasukutty
Gharwali Baharwali - Veetla Visheshanga(Not sure of the name)

6. Tamil Inspired - One more Tamil movie

Biwi No. 1 - Sathi Leelavathi(Ramesh Aravind, Kamal hassan, Kalpana, Heera. Kamal Hassan was credited for the story)

Bol Radha Bol and Shola Aur Shabnam may also be remakes. But I don’t know about the originals.

David Dhawan has also repeated the same subplot in some of his films. In Aankhen, Jodi No.1, Ek Aur Ek Gyarah the two heroes go to house as imposters. There they fall in love with the two young girls. In Hero No.1 and Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge the lead pair meet while travelling. First they are enemies and then they fall in love.

Whatever…. Remakes or Not, I love watching David Dhawan movies.

Saajan Chale Sasural was a re-make of Rajinikanth’s “Veera” (1994) directed by Suresh Krishna. There was a time DD used to make time-pass movies. Off-late his films have just gotten downright stupid. It could just be that Hindi cinema fans have now been exposed to quality comedies like the Munnabhai films that we find DD’s illogical films difficult to digest.

Inspiration has to come from somewhere ,If its inspiration its ok…but if your film has no other message than the origional and niether any entertainment then its bad.every body is inspired from somewhere ….Even TulsiDas who created RAMAYNA was inspired from Balmiki. The movies you mentioned ,which was origional(were they really origional or they were also inspired from some where!)

    Regards to everyone at Pfc

Sanjay, Tulsidas wrote “Ram Charitra Manas” based on Valmiki’s “Ramayan”.

Still, your point holds, even though Valmiki’s version is far superior and less regressive.

  5. oz on May 29th, 2007 9:29 pm

    - Sanjay, I disagree calling Tulsidas Swami’s work “inspired” from Ramayana. The word ‘inspired’ actually makes it sound a “derivative” of an original. Spiritually any “self-realized” soul isn’t inspired from previously written works. “Inspired” actually degrades Goswami Tulsidas’ travels in Spirituality… for if inspired, Tulsidas would not have demanded from ‘Lord Krishna’ when HE appeared before him (in Vrindaban) to drop HIS peacock feathers, HIS flute and appear instead as ‘Lord Rama’ with the crown, the bow and the arrows, which the Lord did.

A mere inspired person would not be in a state to make such demands and neither would the person he is ‘inspired from’ bow to the demands of the inspired.

I understand what you are trying to put forth, but the example was something I didn’t agree to.

  6. wb on May 29th, 2007 10:34 pm

Tulsidas can be said to be divinely inspired, just like Valmiki. having said that, it is totally wrong to suggest that his Ramcharita Manas was inspired by Valmiki’s Ramayana. he was inspired by Lord Rama and Rama acknowledged his love.

anyways, *inspired* is such a misused word. seriously! it got raped so badly, it now fails to invoke any positivity when used in the context of one’s creativity. what can be a better word - stimulated, impassioned, aroused?

@Vijay. Yah, you are right. Sajan Chale Sasural is a remake of “Veera” not “Uzhaippalli”. Thank you. I have changed it in the post.

  8. Justin John on May 30th, 2007 12:45 am

And about inspiration in olden times, you can find similarities in the different mythologies. Even in the Bible, you can find inspiration from other religions, myths and fables.

DD is a good editor. He knows the pace at which a comic thriller (that’s his most successful genre) should be produced. He makes those usual adjustments to indulge his lead actors but keeps the rest of the screenplay on even keel to give the right timings to the comic moments. Otherwise, the movies hurtle along at an impossible pace, if you notice. The breathless speed captures the viewers’ mindspace. That is a good thing he has been doing. As far as content goes, well…people seem to like to like them. He has provided many hits, borrowed, inspired or whatever stories they may be!!
Sample Shola aur Shabnam, Aankhen or Hero No. 1 to understand what I am trying to put across here.
Also, Socially he is adept. That reflects on his makings of the sub plots that are integral to his sagas.

goswami tulsidaas ne ramcharit manas mein likha hai,
nana puran nigmagam sammatam yadya ramayane nigaditam kwachidanya todapi/swantahsukhay tulsi raghnath gatha bhasha nibandh matimanjul matinoti.

in brief matalab hai ki purani rachnaon ko sammati se khud ki khushi ke liye raghunath ki gatha likh raha hoon.

prerna aur prabahav ghalat nahi hai, ghalat hai chori aur seenjori.

    Good stuff JJ…

I’ve always been a big David Dhawan fan. His aim is to entertain and he’s always been incredibly direct and clear about it.

As for the inspired tag, I’d almost have to say that DD is more innovative than inspired. Take BMCM for example, how it is a nice blend of Bad Boys meets Angoor…

His films are far from being pretentious. He’s not an SLB or others of that ilk who seek to be raised on a pedestal for the so-called “greatness” of their films…

  16. kishan on May 30th, 2007 10:13 am

    Thanks for this informative post.
I always used to think that David dhawan copied only telugu films, looks like he copied from everywhere.

I did not enjoy his movies much especially the ones remade from telugu. The original telugu comedies were by far superior.

I remember one interview from E.V.V Satyanarayana (a very famous directory from telugu) where he was asked , ” So, you are being called the south indian David Dhawan, thats an achievement. how do you feel about it?” and he replied back “Well, he is the guy who remakes my movies, I guess he should be called North Indian E.V.V”…

That was one hilarious retort.. and I second E.V.V on that ..

  17. rbehemoth on May 30th, 2007 11:39 am

not liked most of his recent work(Shaadi No.1, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, Chor Machaye Shor-remake of Blue Streak + Golmaal) with guys other than Govinda…even there, i cldnt sit through 1+1=11(though really like the title song of it :) ).
the last movie of his that i liked would probably be Kyunki main Jhooth nahi Bolta…’suitably’ remade from ‘liar liar’…i, in fact, preferred the hindi version of it more…
also liked some of his ‘part’ serious movies with Govinda, of his intial days like Swarg/Shola+Shabnam/Bol Radha Bol(i really like this one…though not with Govinda but still…)
For a mindless time pass few things beat Haseena Maan Jaeygi…Looking forward to ‘Partner’. and yeah nice post…

  18. vinayak on May 30th, 2007 11:59 am

Like everyone said, remake or no remake doesn

  19. Jaiganesh on May 31st, 2007 3:45 am

I think you are confusing Sathish Kaushik and David Dhawan when giving credit to some Bhagyaraj movie remakes.
Loafer was actually a P.Vasu movie starring Sathyaraj called “Velai Kidaichiduchu”.
Veera is not an original Thamizh movie either. It was first made in Telugu with Mohan Babu as the lead with M.M.Kreem as the music director. It was remade in Kannada by Ravichandran and when it broke all the records in both the languages, Rajini bought the rights to make the movie in Thamizh.

  20. Justin John on May 31st, 2007 12:51 pm

    @Jaigaganesh.

Satish Kaushik has not remade any Bhagyaraj movie. Bhagyaraj has been given credit to all his remakes. His hit Hindi remakes are movies are Ek Hi Bhool, Woh Saat Din, Raja Babu. He has also directed some Hindi movies. They are Akhree Raasta, Mr. Bechara and Papa The Great.

Yah, “Veera” is not original. The original is “Allari Mogudu” in the Telugu which was remade as “Gadibidiganda” in Kanada.

And like Sanjay Malhotra’s comment said “Inspiration has to come from somewhere”. The above movies are the source of inspiration. They might not be original.

  21. Justin John on June 1st, 2007 4:35 am

About “Loafer”, I am not sure where the inspiration came from. The original name for “Loafer” was “Mawaali M.L.A”. And the film was inspired either from the Tamil “Velai Kidaichiduchu

  22. jai on June 1st, 2007 7:37 am

Assembly Rowdy is the name u r looking for, heroine of that film was ‘the angel divya bharathi’, it was a super hit those days and many dialogues are still popular in the masses..
from this film that loafer was made..

infact david dhawan and telugu director e.v.v.sathyanarayana(who made suryavamsh in hindi) best known for his comic films are close friends and exchange story ideas or well dvd’s..they have mutual admiration to each other..

anoter superhit comeback film of david, ‘mujse shadi karogi’ was also a straight lift from a telugu fil ‘nee premaki’ which had abbas as hero..

  23. jai on June 1st, 2007 7:50 am

coolie no 1’s title was borrowed from venkatesh’s telugu film with the same name, it was tabu’s first film as heroine..
but the story was copied from another telugu movie from the ‘alludu’(daamaad) series from director sarath and suman(rajini’s sivaji vilian)
    the movie’s name is ‘chinnalludu’(chote daamad):d

but we have to give it to david dhawan for making all those films with great music, masala and terrific humour…

most of the films which DD remade were family and sentimental entertainers, but he changed them into humourous family entertainers…

satish kaushik does the opposite..he makes a sentimental family film even more dramatic, thus making it not so enjoyable

  24. Justin John on June 1st, 2007 8:34 am

Thanks Jai for the information. I will make the changes.

  25. Justin John on June 1st, 2007 8:58 am

@Jai. I would like to know more about Telugu Cinema.

And about E.V.V Satyanarayana, I have heard that David Dhawan was approached to direct Amitabh Bachchan’s Suryavamsham which was a remake of a South Indian blockbuster is 3 languages(Tamil, Telugu and Kanada). But, David Dhawan reccomended Satyanarayana’s name and said that he was a great fan of him and that he would do a better job than him.

  26. jai on June 1st, 2007 10:06 am

    jj:-
gr8 2 read that u r curious 2 know more about telugu cinema..some anish affect or what;)

anyway about what u said about suryavamsh, it could be true that DD recommended evv in a way, u know how awestruck many directors and actors here in south r about Mr.bigB..more so b’cse it’s impossible that they get a chance to associate with ‘the man’. evv admires amithji very much and must have requested if he can get a chance to direct suryavamsh and david dhawan being a wise man safely passed it. the production house was also one of telugu industry’s prominent yesteryear hero superstar krishnaji’s padmalaya studio, so it must have made easy for evv to grab the chance and spill..

btw. beautiful telugu actress soundarya acted opposite amitji in suryavamsh…she along with simran were the last superstar heroines who had a reasonable career in TFI..sad thing is that soundarya died in a plane crash just a few months after her marriage:(

  27. Justin John on June 1st, 2007 1:38 pm

Jai, I need more information. What is the name of the Telugu version of “Banarasi Babu” ? And is there any Telugu version of “Sathi Leelavathi”, “Shola Aur Shabnam” and “Bol Radha Bol” ?
