They came forward with their movies, and now… it’s your turn to view them and talk to them, to complete this festival, that keeps growing bigger and bigger each year – last year we had 19 movies on Day One… and this year… well well well… it’s over 50!!!

To jump or skip a movie: move your mouse over the Video panel OR click the Playlist-Controller (image on left) that is present on the panel of the player, and you will see “< " and ">” buttons along with thumbnails of the movies in the playlist. You can click any of these options to jump to the movie of your choice. The thumbnails show 7 movies at a time, and to move to the next lot in the thumbnails click the arrows that appear on the left and right side of the thumnail row. Oz: Can you please put the 15 word descriptions of the movies along side their names in the listings. This will help us understand the intent of the filmmakers and/or the premise of their stories.

Are all these movies part of a playlist on Youtube?

Kudos to Oz and all the other organizers and volunteers! You have done a great job spending your personal time to setup and organize such a wonderful competition! Congratulations to all the filmmakers in both the Open Section and the Competitive Section!

      • VJ, Many of the guys who participated, including me, went through the feeling that “What I had intended, it didnt come out that well”.. So I guess its only fair that people put their descriptions. Well describing the film as a comment here could be a good idea.

22nd street: The scenes were shot very well. Very professionally. Background score should have been homogenous though, and the subject taut.

Oye Paape pyaar karke pachtaya was a fab subject chosen for one-minute film. Intelligent. Though I thot she had drawn a tiger or something  . More like a fab advt for a breath mint!

Conversation in crazyPrakash is not clear, and neither the story

Lado nako yaaro has a story. Shot very well. Just that the actors dont look like ragpickers. Good concept

Timewarp by Kartik Hosanagar was simply awesome. Some technical brilliance there.

Chaal pe chaal has a good concept like Oye papa, pyaar… for a one-minute movie

    i for India rocks

Adhure Pal could have been shot better, in terms of camaraderie shown.

Fifth wall was shot well, tis just that the subject was arty.

Fab work extracted from actors in THe Biscuit. Subject was refreshing!

Middle class desires was fab too

Dunno how the judges would choose the winner. AFter all there are many who count similar in terms of acting extracted, shot selections, technical brilliance, and mainly subject matter chosen for a one-minute movie

From the competitive section I liked a very few.

    1) Oye Pappe – Nice concept, and hilarious too.
    2) First day – The concept itself is very strong. Safatbhai rocks as ususal. The bloodstained visuals were tough to shoot.
    3) Chal Pe Chal – Good story and the visuals.

The following ones for their executions

    1) Time Warp – There is no story as such. I thought of submitting this kind of video effect but did not submit cuz did not have a story around it.
One can also do a slow motion of protagonist and the surroundings in time-lapse.
e.g. say I am sipping my tea in slow motion in a balcony and the traffic in background is moving 5x
faster than the actual speed or the Sun is rising at 10x speed.

    2)Middle class desires.

    3) 5th Wall

    The rest – hmmmm

Crazy Prakash – Crazy Work…loved it..

Middle class desires – Another good work.

5th wall – it was surreal to see that there was no surrealism in there… :D
    (No smoking hun??)

    22nd street- Hahahahahahaha… ok…

ooye pape! Pyar karke Pachtaya! – good work
(kya main poorani story ko vfx ke kapdo me dekh pachtaya??)

many questions haunting and buffering continues

One of the best looking shorts…it looked nice.

The Prisoner: The acting was good..nice dark feel..but I could not get what it tried to put across.

O Pappe..was killer..nice comic stuff going on here..I wished it could look a bit better..but I loved the those thought bubbles.

Crazy Parkash…I felt it had the best credits font..if there is any prize for it,CrazyPrakash would take it.I loved the reaction on Prakash’s face and the use of colour and BGM..good stuff.

welcome to the gang: It looked very promising in the first 30 secs

Ladlo Nako Yaaro. Was decent effort..too much background noise.

    Time warped : Looked beautiful..technically superior.Good contender I believe.

22nd street – poor & has been seen so many times in diff movies. I wonder why was it selected for the competition

The prisoner – Good , but again we have seen this scene hundreds of times in almost all the police movies. Whats new here? please educate me?

Oye paape! pyar karke pachtaya – At least someone took notice of simple plane humour,Good, innovative and nice screenplay.

    CrazyPrakash : sorry :(

Welcome to the gang : Again picked up from gangster film

Ladko noko yaaro – Original nad well executed

    Time wrap : Nice concept

Chaal pe chaal : Sahi hai beedu

I for India : Good attempt

first day : Another good trry

    Adhure pal : Poetic yes

The Fifth wall : ha ha, No smoking of this pfcone

Biscuit : bhai , good attempt

MiddleClass Desires : Best one and that song picutrisation with blub is the best thing in all the movies. My Winner.

Didnt work today in office , watching the films :) . I guess the non-competitive section deserves comments too.

Hiroshima Nagasaki — nice and interesting effort. very creative use of the colors.
Lady in white — cool effort from a close friend. Maybe context is lost without description , bhavpreet here intereviewed different people in office for their personal anecdotes of their ghostly encounters. he finds a common strand to their stories.
Jaunpur to baumpur — started out funny, accent got too heavy for me to follow the humor later. but i would watch it if u are going to make a longer version :)
The warning — bad bad recursive loop. awesome effort . loved the tension with the tight score. I feel this effort was good enough for competitive section.
ABCD — height of laziness just like the title.. yaar edit karte samay , “start” to nikaal dete har shot se pehle!!
chinu — interesting idea. Self referencing itself within the movie, loved that . wish u had made it in a better way.
The Bride – very beautiful actress and she directed it too :) wish u could have added a background score for the mood. the traffic and ambient noise was distracting.
Use condoms — cool idea, but works more as a powerpoint presentation than as a short film.
Ego Blinds — if it was intended as a trailor out of star best seller. it worked :)
Love or death — pointless, marne ke alawa aur kya option tha?
Smoker’s smoke — interesting point made.
Overstap — why is it again kept out of competitive section. interesting animation short.
G pe phoda — fun. nice try :)

  32. Took a while to watch all the films in between work and crazy internet speed. Here goes:

Hiroshima Nagasaki : Nice concept.. The anti-climax was a good climax
    .
Some evenings: Good, melancholic but fizzled in the end.
    .
The white lady: Started out good, thought it would lead to multiple interpretations of the same story but it wasn’t, so the end was not that good
    .
The Warning was good. Had the eerie factor drawn out well.
    .
Muft ka gyan: The fallibility of advice that everyone shoves upon us and how it doesn’t make a difference. Good concept of the pointlessness of all the madness and the urge to be “somebody”
    .
Blood element: Sadistic pleasure eh? ?
    .
CHinu: I liked it. The kid has acted brilliantly too and how even the kids get bribed with that “Papa tumhein Xbox denge”
    .
Slattern was eerie man. Good shite!
    .
22nd street was brilliantly shot and cut.. nice sense of urban horror
    .
The Prisoner was awesome: The concept of the cop being the actual prisoner, caught in his own feelings
    .
    Time Warp: Technically brilliant
    .
First day: Was a bit like Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Nice concept!
    .
    Biscuit: great acting!
    .
The Fifth wall: Lynchian stuff? Wild Strawberries?
    .
Middle class desires: Nicely shot and cut.
    .
Crazy Prakash: Nice acting. Good concept. Wish the dialogues were audible
    .
i for India: had a good concept behind it but the flag at the end was not syncing up with the story.

Yes style matters – but even in a one minute movie the soul is the theme and story. The concept in Adhure Pal was excellent – “that some dreams are best left unfulfilled” and they act as a parallel life that you can always visit and refresh yrself from. Also lyrics, music and execution was good.

Another film that married concept to execution brilliantly was Middle Class Desire which was humorous and touching. It was also the one with most style …

Last in the list as per me is Biscuit.

Remaining all are good but do not hit the chord in either theme or execution ..

The ones I liked from Non-Competitive section

    Good
    =====
The bride – You look Gorgeous!:P. Film was good too :) . A tribute to Mumbai terror attack victims.

Is This the End – Good mystery. could have been executed a bit well. Whenever a frame can say, never put it in words. You could have shown the author/reader reading the book.

G Pe Foda – Good fun. Egg thingy & Final expression were good.

    Almost good
    ===========

The Warning & Slattern – Good visuals. Could have put more allegorical elements.

Some evenings… – Title was a give away. Some frames were nice. Tapered off.

My heart can see. – Good concept but predictable. I don’t like simple, explainatory or give-away titles.

    Blood Element – Sadistic.

Muft ka gyan – Good one. The cow was shown for a while at the end. Any significance?

    Wish was hilarious :P

The prisoner : brilliant idea. liked the actor’s reaction to the beatings behind. the score perfectly matched.
time warp: brilliant and smooth reverse shots.
    first day: perfect.
fifth wall: interesting . indeed lynchian as someone commented above.

A lot of them explored death and mostly suicides in a myriad ways…makes me think the youth is darn depressed.
Some were too dramatic ;-P and hilarious despite all seriousness.

In the open section Nazariya, Chinu and Use stood out.

Fortunately this year, some of the movies that I liked personally got through in the competition section unlike the last year. Almost all the movies in the competition section are excellently made.

I connected very strongly with The Prisoner and I feel it will be the underdog of this festival. It’s one of those movies that you fall in love with instantly or do not like it at all. The Prisoner is my opinion is one of best written concepts and if things work out right, Amrit Mahapatra has already got some great work in the industry or will for sure. The only thing I would say is that the lead actor got the start and end right, but the middle portion of reacting to the sound of the beatings could have been a bit subdued… if at all I had to pick something.

The other filmmaker I would like to mention is Bharath MC of Crazy Prakash. Again just like Amrit above Bharath can deliver a heavyweight in one simple line. Unfortunately as I read the comments, I see viewers missed the punch, cause they could not hear it properly. I think Bharath again like Amrit is the underdog who shows great spark. And yes a special mention Kenneth (?) who played Prakash. He didn’t go over the top and played it right on.

K H Prabu’s Ladlo Nako Yaaro was fun! If you remember one of the actors is the guy from ITCH which won a special mention award in the first PFCOne.

Safat as usual comes up with these great concepts and is a painter a heart. Wait for his next entries which will show the amazing visuals he comes up with.

I thought Fifth Wall was quite good, until the actor in the tub let out a bubble :) but hey what the hell, it’s a one minute movie! Concept Concept Concept! Liked it.

Tushar Sahney & Onkar Mandlekar, may just turn out to be the darlings of this festival. If you loved Biscuit, watch out for their Elevator and Ice Cream on Day Two. What I loved about their movies the best was the use of natural sounds in the background – To Deliver the Funny Line – a very very very rarely used concept and they just kept hitting Home Runs with it. And Ankush Kapoor the actor in all their movies is kickass. Not sure if this entire team is a professional one already working in the business in Los Angeles or are just students or perhaps doing this as a hobby. But great potential! I already am receiving requests from Bombay to get in touch with Kapoor!

Anthony Fernandes, is simply unputdownable. He keeps coming back with movie and more movies. I hope to see his stories break the limiting barriers.. if at all it makes sense. After seeing his works for two years now, I think his passion and energy are just waiting for that push to the plane of wild creativity. Love his works and they are a great stress smasher.

Middle Class Desires… now that was something I was ok with but the more I saw it, the more I realized that many in the past festivals had tries close (if not similar) things, but Yogesh Kumar Singh gets it bang on.

Adhure Pal was very sensitively done. Loved the wildness in 22nd Street but there were a few movies on similar lines that you will see later in the festival, which brings me to the very important point of “uniqueness” – many films since the last three years tend to be similar to some other entries, and perhaps each filmmaker believes his story or its execution is unique. More often than not it isn’t.

Time Warp, fantastic execution of a neat concept, but I did not want the actor in the end to wake up and specifically mention he dreamt he was in a “time warp”… because we as the viewer knew he was and there I think was no need for it, and this leads to another point many on the panel emailed us about… the knack of a good movie getting ruined because the filmmaker falls into the dumbing down path… like showing a no smoking message for 59 seconds, we get it, and then in the 60th second coming up with the exact message as a placard on screen. It irked a few panel members. I truly believe the message in your story if relayed in your execution does not and absolutely not, needs to be blatantly displayed via a dialogue or a placard. I think those days of this style are over. It was painful to see some very well made movies getting a thumbs down and not making it to the competition section cause of this weak style of dumbing down in the end.

But then again this is where you can try anything and everything out and get to see an audience respond to accelerate your learning process!!!

Overall I’m blown away by the entries this year. It just keeps getting better and better.

Thanks to those who commented on Time warp. Appreciate your taking the time. Oz, thanks for the constructive criticism on the dialogue stating it’s a dream. I did debate this point at the time of editing. In the end, I showed it to a couple friends and they were worried that things were not clear especially given people have only 1 minute and little time to think things through. So, I erred on the side of spelling things out. I appreciate the point you are making though and it was helpful to see the argument against such dialogues clearly spelled out. Point well taken.

It’s great to see the other movies. I enjoyed them. I took some quick notes while watching them & will share them after festival.

    • Firstly a  to everyone who submitted a movie. So many people, so much of work, such immense talent, such great quality…. I am overwhelmed.

Secondly, I am one of the culprit OZ, out of the 2, the pic I was hoping would make through “ALIVE” has that PLACARD at the end and I can see now why it sucks. Will wait for everyone’s comment on day 3 for the pic though.

I am still trying to catch up with all the movies on day 1, this whole thing gives me such a strange hope about so many other things in life. It motivates me to keep doing things I like. Thanks guys and a big big thankyou to the PFC one team

Here are my comments on the day 1 open section. I haven’t read other reviews now, so I am sorry if some of the points have been already raised or answered.

    Come Out Bulu:
Lighitng and contrast are excellent on their own. But I am not sure if they are the best choices for this particular theme.
    Good acting.
    Good voice modulation.
To be honest, I did not get what the shot of the legs meant. (Is didi tied to a knot over there?)
The jump cut at 0:19 could have been avoided.
Title could have been styled better.

    Hero Shima & Nagasaki:
Good visual effects and background score.
Liked “Painting: Nagasaki” in casts list ; )
I think some experts on videography here can tell us how the pixellation at the edges of the hero’s moving body could have been avoided.

    Some Evenings:
    Excellent.
    Magnificient background score.
    Good compositions
I never expected that a one minute short can create a “mood” in such a marvellous way.
    Has a “Safat touch” overall.

    Blood Element:
The location and the mood somehow reminded me of the crop-duster scene in North by Northwest.
Good that you managed some “tracking shots”
The lack of a background score has actually helped the movie.
(P.S.: The chances of someone getting AIDS from such an attack is pretty low.)

Destiny – the story of a cup:
It should have been differently titled. The title and the first few scenes were enough for me to guess the entire plot. The “but one day” subtitle made the matter worse.
    Audio could have been better.
The dialogues in the last phone conversation could have been better.
The cut between the fall of the cup and the shattered pieces was good.

    Muft ka Gyan:
    Hilarious.
    Liked the Atyachaar titles.
Lighting of the booze scene was good.
The sound mixing could have been better – the music makes that wonderful song totally inaudible on many instances.

    Chinu:
    Excellent concept.
It would have been great if the execution matched. Shot selections and the cuts could have been much better.

    The Bride:
Excellent lighting. I assume you have used a light unit.
    Good performance by the actress.
I didn’t get how the news paper clip is connected to the story.
The “JumpCutter’s Productions” introduction does not make the jump cuts any attractive ; )
The “for pfc2009″ could have been avoided.

    Slattern:
    Well executed.
The climax has been done to death by many other short films though.
There could have been another shot between the revelation of the girl’s face and the shot in which the knife is shown lying on the floor.

    Use Condoms:
    Good animation and BGM. Hilarious.
    Do watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fitxofd7kOA

    Maut Ka Saudagar:
    Good concept.
Could have been shot in a better way, using more close ups, and avoiding those camera jerks and unnecessary zooms.

    Is This The End:
The titles could have been shown in better fonts and style.
A logo of the tv channel should have been included.
    Climax was good.

    Ego “Blinds”:
    Good one.
The security guard guy should have been directed better.
    Good choice of BGM.

    I Am Sorry:
    Good visual storytelling.
It would have been better if the letter was not “animated”
I was expecting a climax reveal that the brother who writes the letter is getting married to Tamannadi ; )

    The Gift:
The intentions are good, but the execution did not match.
“End credits” do not need that label.

    Love or Death:
Titling was excellent. BGM was good. But what is the story?

    Smoker’s Smoke:
Good one. Good title. Excellent transition.
    Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcUn0KGlwuw

    Peace Of Mind:
The message was good. But the presentation could have been better.

    Postmortem:
    Seemed too long!
    Good BGM.
Watch http://pc.celtx.com/project/wyBTSw1Mi0qc for an alternate climax.

    Wish:
Camera movements in the letter writing shot were good. Otherwise, the presentation was not good enough.
I “wish” we had a different climax.

I miss…, Know Rules, and Terrorism through an eye:
Those messages could have been conveyed in more attractive / interesting ways.

    My heart can see:
Appeared too long, and the climax was predictable.
The guy listening to the radio seemed overacting at times.
The revelation of the other guy’s eyes could have been done in a better way.
The use of the background colors was good.

    Walk the talk:
    Good concept.
You “crossed the line” in your cuts to the guy who comes on the bike.

    1733:
There are enough shorts on ghosts. It will be difficult to impress the audience unless you have a good climax twist or outstanding visual and sound effects.
    The guy performed well.

    Overstap:
Went over my head. Good BGM and sound effects. Hope someone will clarify what this one means.

    Breaking News:
Good one. Good performance and camera movements.
Was the audio intentionally made incoherent at places?

    G pe Foda:
    Hilarious.
Good performance by the lead actor.
So many shots in a minute!

    Fail:
“Crossed the line”, shifting the sides of the characters in the frame on one occasion (0.05 – 0.07)
I expected some punch in the climax.
    Both the actors performed well.

    Nazariya:
    Excellent concept.
    The aspect ratio was annoying.

    Bad News:
Bad audio. Had difficulty following some of the dialogues.
Their solution to the problems was interesting.

    The Missing Link:
    Good BGM. Good title design.
    Crossed the line at 0.14 – 0.15

There are 4-5 more left. May be tomorrow…

      Here’s the rest:

      #The Lost World#
Good theme. The girls performed well. Distorted compositions went well with the theme.

      #The lady in white#
Good, natural performance from all the actors.
Actors could have been placed in different positions in the frame in subsequent shots. It would have made the cuts smoother.

      #Jaunpur-to-Bompur#
So much plot in one minute! Good one. Well executed too.

      #ABCD#
Good climax. Good performance and voice modulation. Liked the “FIN” title!

      #The Warning#
Excellent titling, frames, sound design and climax. The guy’s performance could have been better.

      #Save Electiricity#
      Well made. Good BGM.
The “Enjoying today. What about the future” part could have been avoided. It should have been expressed through the visuals themselves.

In this list, my first prize goes to Some Evenings.
Blood Element, Chinu and G pe Foda come next.

Finally, a suggestion to the organizers – it would be better if the Youtube titles include the filmmaker’s name.

          #Chaal pe Chaal #
Opening shot and shot of the chai-wallah’s entry were composed well.
          Chai-wallah acted well.
Poor audio. Mixing was not proper. The sound effects were louder than necessary, and the dialogues were incoherent at times.

          #i for INDIA #
          Good concept.
A more cinematic aspect ratio could have been used.
          Titles were not readable.

          #Time Warp #
Excellent locations in the dream sequence.
The climax was predictable – that twist has been seen in many shorts in the past.
Style of the credits was good.
How did you shoot/edit the reverse shots?

          #Adhure Pal#
          Poetic. Good acting.

          #The fifth wall #
Surrealism is not my cup of tea.
I hope the director will explain the subtext and symbolisms.
The high angle shot of the guy the running through the road was magnificient.

          #Biscuit#
          Good one.
          The last shot was excellent.
          Excellent performances and audio.
Liked the way you named the characters in the credits.

          #Ladlo Noko Yaaro #
          Well shot.
Composition of the shots were excellent from a story-telling perspective. This is something many shorts in this festival lack.

          #Middle class desires #
          Excellent performance by the guy.

          #Crazy Prakash #
          Another good performance.
          Poor audio.

          #Welcome to the gang#
Could have been better directed. Shot selections were not the best.

OZ and everyone, thanks for the comments. Yeah the concept behind “22nd Street” has been done earlier, but we wanted to just get out there and do some good location-shooting at night. it was challenging and fun shooting in an uncontrolled environment and with natural lights. And guys please watch the video with the volume turned way up; the volume for the YouTube convert is very low. We poured our hearts into the music for this.

Along with this, we had high hopes for “Made in China” and “Bugged” but they couldn’t make the cut. Hopefully we get some good feedback for these.

I really liked “The Prisoner” which had a good concept and atmospherics to go with it.
“Crazy Prakash” had very good acting. “Oye Pappe” and “Biscuit” had excellent comic timing. No offense, but I somehow felt even these three didn’t generate the elusive “cinema” feel.

competitive section is quite underwhelming compared to last year. While some in the open section are quite alright.

Makes me wonder if we should categorize these films in to competitive and open at all.

I understand the jury cannot view all 200 films but separating them into open and competitive when screening for the public certainly reduce the viewers of the open section. Thats a bummer.

I submitted Maut Ka Saudagar and it did not make it to competitive section and so my opinion may be a bit biased.

I have submitted films in each of pfcone competitions since 2007 and can safely say that the one reason to take part in this competition is the number of unbiased viewers you get. If this number of viewers reduces, one wonders if it is all worth it.

Would like to invite people to watch “maut ka saudagar”. Feedback is appreciated. Happy to receive even the highly descriptive “WTF”. Trust me even that is better than nothing.

surrealism is a deep science and yet it is art…its the explanation for a very dark world which paves the path for a brighter dawn…have u ever realised why dali’s work was different from picaso or van gogh… thats the answer…

anugam, der was nothing which pinched me. What is baffling is that PFC followers just canot see beyond no smoking. Its a cult film, no denying . But its not the de-facto standard for surrealism . Why is every damn film with surreal imagery compared to NS. I mean der r 100’s of film in which bath-tub has been used as a “Tool” , NS was not the first.
I’am not a 18 or 19th century artist. I am not a “Purist”. I not evolving d art. I’am just trying to give it my own interpretation.thats it. Why compare always . As a concept if my stuff reeks of ‘blatant copying’ , criticize, find fault , make me feel like an asshole, but plz plz don’t compare . I didn’t twist the idea of NS to fit into my concept. As per ur argument Michel Gondry shudn’t direct b’cauz we already hav a David Lynch . Calie Kaufman should stop writing we hav Kafka’s work. This comparison is silly & plain stupid , isn’t it ? The subject they deal with is different ,the ideology is different & even the treatment. I am a nobo . Just figuring out how things work-out for me.

At the very outset, let me use this opportunity to thank the PFCOne team for first giving us a push to make a film and then giving us the chance to show it to the world. Festivals like this must be a lot of hardwork and the way Oz and his team is handling it deserves a standing applause! Please keep it up guys!

It was heartening to see some comments on Adhure Pal, our entry in the competition. Thanks all who commented on it and thanks all who watched it. Your feedback (or the absence of it – which often is a feedback in itself) counts a lot. Let me individually respond to all the comments that have mentioned our film.

    @VJ
Thank you! Will think of alternate shots. They don’t tax your thoughts. Not yet!

    @Yaatri
Thank you! Since poetry was a word some of us had in our subconscious while making the film – your comment makes me happy.

    @Ghouli
Thanks! The marriage of story with execution was something we were striving for. Very encouraging to see both words in a comment. Also I must say that you have absorbed the film so well that your articulation is similar to that of the makers of the movie! Or may be generally you articulate things well! Thanks in any case, buddy! And yeah, we took a conscious decision to work on a ’story’ and not on an ‘event’.

    @Oz
    Thank you sir!

    @Sourav
Thanks man! As a sidenote, our film was shot at 16:9 (and not 4:3). Just kidding…

    @anugam goswami
Thank you! Great to know that you loved it. Your comments on the lack of aesthetics is well appreciated, but I would not relate it to the number of names in the credit roll. Anyway… thanks a lot for loving our baby!

I am sure many others on this list would relate to my personal blabbering below. More than the list or films here it is what a participant to this competition feels like.

I have been a movie lover since my childhood, like most of the people reading this comment here.

All my life I wanted to do something that is remotely related to this beautiful art of telling a story visually. Never did I think there was any possibility for it, until you came along PFCONE.

By no means would I claim that “Pragati” is a fine piece of art and all, its definitely an amateurish effort, but its a very special and personal one from us. All of us were doing what we were doing for the first time and we always wanted to do that. Taking the camera in hands for the first time, writing a screenplay for the first time, making a story board for the first time, Actors acting for the first time, editing first time and all to fulfill a long cherished desire. Thanks PFCONE for making it come true.

I hope you like “Alive” too (which is scheduled on day 3), which is a better effort that “Pragati”. But PRagati will always remain special.

Friends, do watch all competitive section and Open section movie and do give in your comments and suggestions. Do let me know what you think of “Pragati” (Day2) and ALive (Day3).

    Thanks again PFCone team !

My top list for the competition section Day 1 –
    1. The Prisoner – I thought Yashwant Singh, the guy who plays the jailor in ‘The Prisoner’ is outstanding. Loved the film. Totally agree with Oz. Top of the list for me.
    2. Time Warp – loved the location in the beginning;) And also, was alike a tiny ‘Twilight Zone’ episode.
    3. Biscuit – Howlarious.
    4. The Fifth Wall – liked the way sound was used in it.
Awesome stuff everyone. Pat yourselves on the back.

I am aware of the technical problems of it. But the resources were so limited. Whoever agreed to act in it I took him. It was shot with a digicam with sync sound. In fact, it was supposed to be in PfcOne 2008 but I could not find enough people.

Just finished watching the Open Section, my 2 bits…..

The Missing Link – its based on one of those mass mailing internet stories. send it to so and so many people and all. but nicely made. loved the background music.
Nazariya – what was it a report on? why was he filing the report from one viewpoint? what was he? these are the questions i have after watching it. it had the potential if some more information had been provided.
The Lost World – i have something similar lined up (based on addiction). could have been better. try and improve the sound next time around.
Save Electricity – Return of the PSA. nice thought.
Bad News – didnt quite get it.
Come Out Bulu – did he kill someone for that toy?
Hero Shima & Nagasaki – loved the entire thing with the colours and play with light, but couldnt understand the part with the painter.
Some Evenings – was there a breakup involved or was the guy dead? nice bg music though.
The Lady in White – Nice. different people, different places, almost the same sightings. almost the same experiences. eerie….or people just repeating someone else’s experience as their own. Nice.
Blood Element – bad sound. except for the last bit, kuch samjha nahin.
DESTINY : The story of a cup – why was this the story of a cup?
Jaunpur to Bompur – could have been better. nice use of blue screen. i gotta learn how to use it.
Warning – didnt quite get it.
ABCD – the talk on the phone (with relative) was stretched quite a bit. ordering food part was good.
Muft ka Gyan – Magik bhai, sound was very low. kuch sunai nahin de raha tha, subtitles the isliye samajh mein aaya kya ho raha tha. seemed like a PSA.
Chinu – good one. sound could’ve been better though.
Know Rules – another PSA with nice intentions. i am with you on this one, i hate it when people dont follow traffic rules.
The Bride – didnt get it
Slattern – couldnt follow what happened. but liked the candles on the floor, it created nice eerie feel.
Use Condom – straight lift from a popular email, just added some animation and music.
Maut Ka Saudagar – sound wasnt good, but nice effort.
Is This The End – didnt work for me.
Ego Blinds – What happened there?
I Am Sorry – liked it.
    The Gift – Huh?
Love or Death – his expressions were super funny for someone dying.
    Smokers Smoke – PSA again.
Peace of Mind – didnt work for me.
    Postmortem – too wordy.
Wish – using a child for the role of Dudu would have been better i think. bad lighting in some scenes, jiske wajah se kuch theek se dikh nahin raha hai.
I miss – a PSA with a nice message, we really do need more trees.
Terrorism through an Eye – another PSA.
Fail – didnt work for me.
My Heart Can See – nice.
Walk the Talk – good. acting could have been better though.
1733 – nice attempt. its very difficult to make a one minute horror movie. i myself have tried, but i dont think it will work.
Overstap – fulltoo bouncer. didnt understand anything.
Breaking News – what was that my friend? didnt make much sense to me.
G pe Foda – loved it. nice expression on the guys face.

Thanks Shahul and Amit Mishra for reviewing all the open films as well.

My 2 cents on all the open films:

13 The Missing Link Abhay Sharma Mumbai, India
Like It. Felt like it could have even been shorter which is awesome given how hard it is to usually fit stories in a minute. Almost no dialogues – again a good thing after all it is film not a radio show.

170 Nazariya Ajay Saklani Mumbai, India
Great Concept – Wish you had done a bit more with it. Again, no dialogues. Thats a good thing. Show dont tell is a policy I fail to abide by my films. Ideally, would have liked some conflict introduce an event – show some riots burning of a bus etc – then an argument over wearing some spectacles between the editor and the writer. The argument ends being a physical fight and then the editor wins and the writer is forced to wear one spectacle – say the one saying racial incitement – while the others (secular, hindu, muslim, social, political ..) stay on the rack. And that is the last scene just the way you had it.

131 The Lost World Amit Tiwari Delhi, India
Well. You lost me on this. It is interesting for a first quarter and then nothing happens. Usually even these little stories need to work on multiple levels. It should be funny/dramatic and even possibly linear on the surface while the message real or abstract needs to be for those who engage with film at a more intimate level.

38 Save Electricity Ankeet Pai Mumbai, India
Kya boss – thoda aur effort dalta to kuch ho sakta tha.

202 Bad News Ankit Mistry, Basav Biradar & Baul Haque Chicago
Interesting – Had to see it twice. But what was the point? So now people will not share info at the water station. And then what. Dont get it. May be you could have given a voice over to the Water Station – the water station provides one liners. Another option instead of about many bad news, you could have made it about a chain following one bad news. Sorta like one guy is fired and the manager says I will fight for you, only to find her job is being axed as well and tell her manager, who is also shocked and promises to find out and the thing goes to the senior levels and one finds business if closing due to no fualt of anyone and the water station is very sad since it will get lonely.

109 Come Out Bulu Antariksh Das Kolkata, India
    Sorry sir, kuch nahin samja.

33 Hero Shima & Nagasaki Anugam Goswami Jaipur, India
Very interesting. As a amateur film maker I know how hard it is make such things. It is definitely interesting visually – but did not get the point in the first try.

11 Some evenings are spent with you… Arati Kadav Mumbai, India
Liked it: Would have preferred a bit more. I personally think the short films that rely on the title are weak films. These need to work without the title. So, you should finish with the depcition of the loneliness as well the fond memories. It is hard but we all know film making is not easy. Particularly since we are actually making them.

50 The Lady in White Bhavpreet Singh New Delhi, India
Liked it. Good acting but in general, it is always better if people disagree rather than agree. It brings in a conflict that can be resolved and helps end the film. Again, I admit it is easy to give reviews.

95 Blood Element Gyandeep Pattnayak Berhampur, India

I understand from the above para that you’ve not understood the film. It shows how a man, turned down by his own parents and the society, suffering from AIDS, retaliates and goes for retribution. He is dumb enough to understand that AIDS spreading from an attack like this is 0.001%. He is that disillusioned. His mind is facing crossroads. he is confused.

It shows the frustration that he faces. He is angry and pissed off. I didn’t make the movie ‘aise hi’. I took my time, worked on an original story and shot it with a 7-MP Sony Digital camera. Sound is bad, acting amateurish, i admit. But, please don’t say I just made it like that. I made it with a lot of conviction and passion. I failed. i will try to do better next time.

I’m surprised a few comments mentioned that they didn’t get it or was it the smoke which killed them. The chai walla in the end makes it quite clear who the murderer is. This makes me wonder if things do need to be spelled out quite loudly as is in Bollywood movies so the viewer doesn’t miss or misinterpret something.

Oye Paape…..- didnt like it that much, maybe the humor didnt work for me. i think the magic pen part didnt work for me.
Crazy Prakash – how is this here, weakest yet in the competitive section.
Welcome to the Gang – the first few shots were great, but after that everything was ‘been there, seen that’ stuff
Ladlo Noko Yaaro – do bandar ki ladayi mein billi (kutta in this case) baazi maar gayi.
Time Warp – nicely shot, but the content wasnt that great. could have been better. liked the end credit going in reverse.
Chaal Pe Chaal – nicely done. everything was good, except for the parts where they died, their deaths somehow looked very weird.
i for INDIA – somehow i felt it was trying too hard for the sympathy factor.
First Day – safat bhai, just a small glitch (i think, will have to confirm or search the net for more info), i dont think babies are born with their eyes open. i think they open their eyes after being completely delivered. nice concept though, but not on par with your earlier efforts. one more thing, was the being out of focus- coming in focus – going out of focus again a deliberate thing, or just happened.
Adhure Pal – didnt understand, the sound is very low for the headphones.
The Fifth Wall – nicely done, lighting could have been better. and as somany have said before me, this is the No Smoking of PFCOne.
Biscuit – The best one so far, i laughed out loud in this one. the expressions were great, the setting was good, the bg music was awesome. loved it.

22nd Street – I’d say this is the most effective of all the films in terms of what it sets out to do. The scare factor does go up, although it doesn’t have a definite finish.

Oye Pappe – This one’s a complete short film the way I like ‘em. Great concept and well executed.

Crazy Prakash – Kenneth has it in him to be a pro actor. The timing of expression change was spot on.

Lodlo Noko – Well done. Amusing.

Chaal Pe Chaal – Really good. If the dying had been acted a bit better, this would be the best of the day.

First Day – What an idea! Well executed too.
