PFCOne 2010 : Still from Pour by Kabir Chowdhry

Thank You, thank you and thank you!!! For such an overwhelming response to PFCOne 2010!!! Thank you for tweeting us off the charts and spreading the word.

Above all thank you for encouraging the filmmakers even in your criticism. It does wonders to their spirit and who knows… perhaps in a few years we’ll be watching their films on the big screen!

So lets get right into Day Two… and if you thought Day One was hot, brace yourselves…

Playing the video:
All movies are arranged in in two playlists. One for the Open section and the second for the Competitive Section. To view the movies simply click the play button and all movies will play one after the other.

To jump or skip a movie: move your mouse over the Video panel OR click the Playlist-Controller (image on left) that is present on the panel of the player, and you will see “< ” and “>” buttons along with thumbnails of the movies in the playlist. You can click any of these options to jump to the movie of your choice. The thumbnails show 7 movies at a time, and to move to the next lot in the thumbnails click the arrows that appear on the left and right side of the thumnail row. Clicking again on the controller will remove the thumbnail panel and the forward/back arrows from the player screen.

Oh, and if you are tweeting – please add #pfcone for us in your tweet!

(Posted it on the wrong link before this … emotional hoke :) )

I am sure many others on this list would relate to my personal blabbering below. More than the list or films here it is what a participant to this competition feels like.

I have been a movie lover since my childhood, like most of the people reading this comment here.

All my life I wanted to do something that is remotely related to this beautiful art of telling a story visually. Never did I think there was any possibility for it, until you came along PFCONE.

By no means would I claim that “Pragati” is a fine piece of art and all, its definitely an amateurish effort, but its a very special and personal one from us. All of us were doing what we were doing for the first time and we always wanted to do that. Taking the camera in hands for the first time, writing a screenplay for the first time, making a story board for the first time, Actors acting for the first time, editing first time and all to fulfill a long cherished desire. Thanks PFCONE for making it come true.

I hope you like “Alive” too (which is scheduled on day 3), which is a better effort that “Pragati”. But PRagati will always remain special.

Friends, do watch all competitive section and Open section movie and do give in your comments and suggestions. Do let me know what you think of “Pragati” (Day2) and ALive (Day3).

    Thanks again PFCone team !

Whats for Lunch? : Very Bold ….brilliant execution!( bold to have thought to shoot a 1 min horror short). It’s clear your team has put a lot of thought into the execution and BGM.

Disturbance : Intriguing concept…some good editing , but don’t think what you sought to convey (based on the 1 line desc) really came through

The Game : Finally a film in the competitive section with “tehraav” ….oft seen scene/story but still well told Karan..!! Great work with the lighting too!

Towards the beginning: Safat…wow…great visuals….you are like a poet/painter behing the camera. Not sure what you sought to convey came through well though.

Pour : Beautifully shot..! I found some of the other concepts/storylines more interesting but yours is one of the best shot yet Kabir (in terms of camera angle, capturing emotions , editing)!

    ##Disturbance##
The altercation scene looked natural and was directed well.
It was a good decision to indicate the climax only through audio.

    ##The Tree##
This is the first movie I have seen in a vertical aspect ratio, and the first one in which the actor is credited as the cameraman.
How did you get that tilt down in the first shot, when you were in front of the camera?
    Acting was good.

    ##Elevator##
Ankush Kapoor is the star of this PFCOne. (Last year I think it was Savitha Bhabhi!)
    Biscuit was better though.

    ##The Shower Scene##
Imitation of the Psycho music was good.
You could have tried some fast cuts as in the original.

    ##What’s for Lunch##
    Creepy!!
    Excellent sound effects.

Thanks Shahul for the feedback on “The Tree”. I shot this movie using my cellphone camera, and I wanted to begin the movie showing the tree. So in the first shot I had the phone in my hand pointing up to the tree, and then I pan it down to where I’m sitting, and then I begin talking.

    ##Love @ 1st Sight##
    Good color tone. Novel idea.
Did I hear some copyrighted music in between?

    ##Pour##
    Wow! A multiplot one-minute movie!!
    Excellent frames.
You have included amazing amount of information in such a short duration.
    Good performances.
    Good title font.
    Hats off!!

    ##The Game##
    Good lighting and performances.
    Magnificient visual language.
    Excellent closing shot.
Title could have benefitted from a better font.

    ##Chalta Hai…##
    Appeared too long…
Crossed the line on many shots. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/180_degree_rule )

    ##Towards the Beginning##
After 2-3 shots, I correctly guessed that it is a Safat movie.
    Excellent visuals as usuals.
I hope you will explain what the visuals mean.

  28. Shahul Shahul says:

    ##Munni##
    Touching.
    Good sound effects.
The dark background of the title and the lighting of the opening shot created some confusion about your aspect ratio.
    The girl acted well.
The message in the end could have been avoided.

    ##Bark##
    Different. And good.
    Title graphic was good.
It was not a good font for subtitles.

    ##Ice Cream##
    WOW! WOW!! WOW!!!
    Accept my standing ovation!!

    ##Woh Meri##
There were few problems with lip sync.
The acting in the last shot could have been better.
I think the heroine looked to the camera once or twice.

    ##NRI’s Diwali##
Some better technique could have been used to reveal the illusory nature of the fireworks.
It is better to avoid zooms unless very essential.
Various shots of the guy sitting on the bench could have been taken from different angles, using different shot sizes.

    From competitive section
    ========================

What’s for lunch – Excellent mood/touch transition. Very well executed. Scary!

The tree – As someone said… would be a good trailer

Elevator – Funny. Kapoor is the actor of the festival :) . I expected some reactions from others waiting for the lift.

Disturbance – Highlighting carelessness of the cops? Let me know if I missed something.

The shower scene – Couldn’t make out of it much. Good shadow anime though.

Love @ 1st sight – Very nice animation. Could have been done on an effective story.

Pour – Funny. Good acting by the cast. Cryptic. What is the significance of the Joker? Kabir, tell us more. A lot of info there.

Chalta hain – Didn’t like it. Sorry.

Towards the begining – Couldn’t make sense. Safatbhai thoda explain karo. I know you are out of station and busy but must be watching these films :)

Munni – Simple yet hitting the ball. I have had the last scene of this film as one of the scenes in a shortfilm of mine. Couldn’t shoot. Still Only on paper :(

    Bark – hmm. Not bad.

Ice cream – OKish. Actor is good as I said earlier. The concept is lifted from Pyar Ke Side Effects. However, Content was different. I am feeling sad about other better entries in “Open Section”.

    From Open section…
    =================

    Christine – Good concept

Hide & Seek – Not a bad horror short.

There are 64 of us now – Good concept. Font’s readability is a bit low.

A real bollywood fan – You got the wrong msg.:P You don’t need money to be happy.

Fling – Was gripping but didn’t make sense to me

I will be there – Megha, I am falling in love with you ;-) .

    .
Ice Cream & Elevator: You guys, can you quit whatever fuck you’re doing and kick some David Dhawan ass here?? Like now!!! Brilliant stuff! Kings of comedy and brilliant acting. My favorites so far.
    .
Munni: Nice execution with objects giving meaning but the message at the end sort of felt you didn’t like subtlety .
    .
Game: Less machinations but very well directed to create the “oncoming doom” sensation in the narrative
    .

      Hi Vaibhav,
Congrats on making the movie. You had put a lot of effort, with a lot of location shooting in exteriors.
Your intentions were good. But the same message could have been conveyed with a better script and visuals.
That fancy transition could have been avoided. Shots of the guy getting up, washing his face, etc. were unnecessary. Your compositions have to improve. See how the filmmakers have composed their shots in movies like Ladlo Noko Yaaro or The Game

Hey Thanks a lot Shahul for reviewing my film .. yeah… it was an adventurous experience to shoot the outdoor shots. In which, the cd seller scene u see was

all a big “sting operation” coz ppl were not ready to face the camera, they had their own superstitions and

fears :witsend: , So i messed up composition in many places.:banginghead:
i agree to ur points that some shots cud’ve been avoided. My Idea behind those shots was that I wanted
to add a voiceover of a female t.v. reporter to be playing in the background, explaining the condition of
piracy ,while the character continues with his personal chores. But i cudn’t get the voiceover fixed before the submission time.Hence i added those fancy transitions in its place.Next time,i will keep ur points in mind while working on future projects.I’ll rework on ur points and will be soon uploading the edited version on youtube that’ll include the voiceover minus the unnecessary shots. Missed your reply. Have reviewed Paani below. (I am not a huge fan of PSAs). Will comment on Ghanta soon.
My comment on execution of Chinu was not about the quality of the camera or acting. It was about selection and composition of shots. As you have good screenwriting skills, this part can be learned easily. I strongly recommend the DVD series named Hollywood Camera Works.
Welcome to Shortz with your shorts and reviews.

          @ Vaibhav
Thanks for the detailed reply. I have always felt that once you listen to the filmmaker’s version, you become more empathetic towards his work. The risks associated with your project explaisna lot of things.

Many greats today both in the Competitive and Non-Competitive Section…

What’s for Lunch? I though Aditya G. was very innovative in designing the screenplay and the shots to exactly get on the screen what may have been in his head. As per what I heard from Neeraj, many participants felt they could not bring on screen what they imagined in their minds – probably that’s what it takes to be a filmmaker… I thought Aditya got it bang on the thought, and the impact.

The Tree by Amit Dubey was intriguing. To hold someone with you and them for a minute, needs talent and I thought Amit did it quite well. And I did not know that he’d shot the film via his cell phone, cause it looked very well done!

Elevator – this is the one that caught my attention for the first time of the LA Trio (Tushar, Onkar and Ankush Kapoor). It’s one thing to come on PFC and talk fight and grab collars on the assumption that you have the greatest knowledge on cinema. Its another thing to keep quiet, pick up a camera and let your passion do the talk without having to speak a word. I think this LA trio does it quite well! Ankush is now already in talks with Bollywood, so I hope something good happens. Since the LA trio is in Los Angeles, PFC invites the trio for a round of beers at it’s HQ in OC!

Disturbance. The concept by Ankit Mehrotra was bang on. If some people didn’t get it, as seen above, it is in my opinion cause of one slight problem. That being not being able to convey properly that the man in the chair watching the cam video is actually the man in the cam hitting the other person. That mistake happens in one second or less. The empty chair where the man was sitting in, was not shown properly and did not, in my view, show the connection of the empty chair and the aggressive man in the cam video. This shows how a fraction of a second of miscommunication to the viewer or in relaying your idea can be a downer. But great job, that is absolutely undeniable. Though the movie bears an uncanny resemblance to another short I saw at another festival last year, still very well done.

The Shower Scene. One of my favorites at this festival Bharath MC (Crazy Prakash) slips here. As one of the comments correctly points out, Shower Scene is pulled down cause of the drag factor. Snippy. that was the keyword required here. But again Bharath shows he has a very creative dreaming mind. And that’s what matters the most!

Gokul Chandran’s Love @ 1st Sight, was awesome, I wish and hope we can get more and more animation and crazy thoughts like these in future PFCOnes

Pour. Kabir returns and how!!! Kabir, for those who don’t know was the Gold Minute winner of the first ever PFCOne. His entry last year couldn’t make it and I remember he beating himself over it and vowing to come back next year with something special. And wow. Telling a story in one minute is a task in itself, but Kabir goes and creates three parallel threads in that one minute. Superb!

The Game was a done deal. It would tug the panel’s hearts I was sure. And it did! Chalta Hai, shows the optimism and I’m glad we had some here. Even with a simple story line and no technical wizardry S. Uday Kiran brings a smile. I loved it and wish there were more like these. Many filmmakers this year came up with solutions like suicides for the issues they put forth in the beginning and I thought that was an easy cop out. Hence Uday’s movie stood out more for me.

Toward’s the beginning. Safat, again shows the painter at heart that he is. Though the story didn’t make much sense to me. As someone pointed out, I think Safat’s entry last year (one of the two) about the Mannequin was his best story wise if compared to the two we’ve seen so far. But technically and from a visual perspective, I think Safat has leaped and progressed the most.

Loved Munni. It was great to see films being submitted from other cities than the usual ones. Shishir Jha from Darbhanga shows great potential. Not sure if he is already a film maker or and ad film maker cause his movie makes you believe he’s already done a lot of work behind the camera. Great one this, except the end which I pointed to yesterday.

Bark, again great concept. Ice Cream… the LA trio is nuts and crazy and I think most of us like them that way!

There was no order at all. The films were chosen at random to play on a certain day, and then we reviewed the schedule to ensure that if a filmmaker had a competitive entry, any additional films he or she submitted screened after the competitive one, and that filmmakers who submitted more than one film had the films spaced out on different days…Outside of that it was the slip of paper and the hat that fixed the schedule :)

Use of some better font for the titles would have easily prevented that pixellation.
Those marriage video transitions are better avoided in short films.
It is highly unlikely that someone will be offering “namaz” when the “adan” (call to prayer) is still on.

@all – try and comment on all of the movies. i know exactly how one feels when someone comments on a lot of movies and leaves your own out.
2nd Day here I come. Open Section.
NRI’s Diwali – lighting could have been better. nice thought behind it. i can totally understand the feeling, my brother is in australia, and he misses the festivals so much.
Woh Meri..!! – sound is very low in the pool table scene and the girl stared directly at the camera in the first scene for a split second, that looked bad.
Islam : A Struggle Against Perception – Wow! i liked it very much. The props could have been better, and the transitions somehow didnt look good (to me). all was said without a word being spoken.
Ek Pal – whatever was being said was inaudible for a large part of the film. so couldnt understand what was going on.
Addiction – (my entry) this resulted from a bet. my younger brother placed a bet that i would have to make something out of anything that he suggested. borrowed the laptop from my neighbour, got my age old halogen lamp from my dusty storage room, and began to shoot. the alarm sound from the clock was too low, had to place my cellphone with the alarm set directly beneath the camera to get the best sound for the alarm. i had to make Rahul shout most of his dialogues for a better sound.
Lets Change – 2012 meets Love Story 2050 (Future Machine) meets PSA. this didnt work for me.
Hide & Seek – it had a very eerie feeling right till the end where the faces of the actors ruined everything. climax should have been different. loved the shot with the clock.
The I – couldnt understand one bit.
Rab Banaye Sabki Jodi – This one was much better and funnier than your Oye Paape…, but i have seen a similar thing with the same payoff in an episode of How I Met Your Mother.
Christine – why the title as christine? everything right from the title to the ending was a big KLPD. started out as a chase, what witht he bike showing in the rearview, all the glancing at the shoulder, and all. ending was a big disappointment.
There are 64 of us now – didnt quite understand the dialogues in some parts. the subject could have been handled better. its dialogue heavy too.
The Sense of Freedom – whats IBO? didnt make much sense to me as i dont know what that word means.
A real bollywood fan – instead of him having singing these songs you could have made him talk. that would have been much better.
What Next?….Papa – nice animation. but the sound should have been better. i liked it overall.
The Other Side – good one. but what was the deal with the subtitles, one moment they are light and small, the next they are big and dark?
The Last Puff – if you are using subtitles to convey your message, dont make your actors mouth any dialogues. especially when the dialogue has nothing to do with the subtitle. it distracts.
Rape & Revenge – liked it. acting could have been better though.
Fling – Gajendra ji, couldnt follow what was going on.
Pragati – the message was nicely put across.
The Broken Friend – trying too hard to make an Indian Toy Story? didnt work for me though.
Daaru = 0 – couldnt make out anything being said. have no clue as to what happened in the film?
Paani – PSA. liked the camera movement, but the message was an oft repeated one.
Smoking… – it wasnt smoking that killed him, it was his ex-wife at the door (just kidding), but seriously, it wasnt the smoking that killed him.
    Careful u r next – huh???
Living Room – Revenge of Nature. nicely shot.
Mean Green – PSA @ heart. could have been shot in a better way though.
Confession by Mumbaikar – you should have said all that in hindi or marathi, that would have had a better impact.
Dimaag bhi naa bas – thats the ugly truth. could’ve been shot better.
Life = Movie – thats not entirely true. what about someone who is having loads of fun, but dies suddenly, unexpectedly?
The Inbetweenist – The actors looked as if they were stoned. and also i didnt get the movie?
Seeking Love ??? – what was that? the message could have been presented in a better way.
The Start – liked it a lot. but there was a lot of unwanted background sounds. would have worked better without any background sound. there were some continuity errors, wrt the facial positions of the actor, try and avoid it.
Justice – well shot. nicely acted too. i couldnt see the name of the movie, either in the opening or the closing credits. there was no need for all the cards regarding police brutality and all, only one card, with a few minutes earlier would have sufficed.
Virtual Childhood – lovely. thats what is the plight of youngsters today. you should have used minimal BG music and sound effects, somehow it didnt gel well.
Maalum Kya – the PSA had its heart in the right place, but if newspaper articles were that effective in curbing piracy, there wouldn’t be so many pirated CD stalls with flourishing business.
Thathsath v.02 – KLPD for the guy. liked it.
    Thathsath v.01 – v.02 was much better.
I’ll be there – kuch nahin samjha dost.
Aakhir hua kya hai? – i am amazed they could run so much in pressure. :)
Comma a short pause – nice attempt, could have been presented better.
Swan Song – a nice attempt. i liked the shot of him being slapped. slap – cut to terrace – reaction – cut to room – reaction completed.

      Hi Amit,

Even I was not convinced after making the movie. It didn’t come out the way I actually wanted to show it,probably because we began too late so there was little space for precision.

The movie was about the difficult choices one has to make during the human existence. The child, I believe, is the purest form form of existence. Cricket (used as a form) was his passion. However due to so many external pressures and interferences the purest form finally succumbs. We kill the child in us.

There were a couple of shots which I wanted to use in some manner but sadly couldn’t this time.

I am thankful for the feedback and I’ll surely erase my mistakes in the next take…

    From the Competitive Section

Whats For Lunch – The idea seems very far fetched, but i really liked the shot when the hand was being attacked. i want to know how was it achieved, the blood flow seemed almost instantaneous without any cut shots.
The Tree – Acting was pretty good. nice BG music too. but the last bit of dialogue was largely inaudible with my headphones. was he going back to the tree on his own, or was he finding the tree wherever he went in the jungle? an earlier dialogue suggested that he found it wherever he went, but one of the cards near the end (No Way Out, Back to the tree) makes me think that he went there again by himself.
Elevator – Ankush Kapoor is brilliant. he is the one who lifts the film from being ok to very good. his expressions are beautiful. loved it.
Disturbance – What was the matter with the lighting. couldnt understand what was going on either.
the shower scene – liked it. but had expected more because of the legend associated with it. one thing bugged me though. both the guys (the one with the knife and the one with the saw) were shown going from L to R once which was enough, showing them going again after the cuts ruined some of the effect.
love @ first sight – nicely done. liked it a lot.
pour – very good acting in the first 2 parts. it was visually very good. but the content didnt work for me.
The Game – visually stunning. amazing shot selections. i never thought i would see such a long continuous shot in this years PFC. but the whole shot after the doorbell rang, amazing. good acting by the two ladies. if only the sound had been better, this would have been perfect.
Chalta Hai – What happened there?
Towards the beginning – Charan kahan hain aapke Safat bhai. visually arresting. WOW!!! the kids are beautiful. every frame is amazing. The background music worked big time.
Munni – the best PSA this year.

      • Onkar Onkar says:

Hey VRJ. Most of what I have learned about effects is working with editing softwares. I have been using Adobe Premiere Pro. There are others out there like Final Cut Pro and Avid. You see an effect somewhere, there is a good chance the software will have some tools for you to recreate it. Also, I am learning how important sound is for such effects, it can flip the effect over its head. Offcourse in the industry editors have more powerful tools to do some really crazy stuff, but I have found Premiere Pro as a good starting point.

About the effect of one person walking forward and others walking backwards, this was done by a film called ‘Time Warp’ (day 2, competitive section), the way I believe they shot that was by having the one guy walk backwards and then reversing the final video. Offcourse the guy must ve had to practice how to walk so that it looks real.

The teddy appearing out of paper sounds like animation, there are lots of talented animators out there, I would recommend getting in touch with one.

        Hope this helps

    BEST FILM in PFC…

    ##What Next Papa##
    Good graphics.
    Ending could have been better.

    ##The Other Side##
Good one. Better than your last year’s entry.
The way you revealed the blindness was different and good.
That message in the end could have been avoided.
When you don’t have the necessary equipement, it is better to avoid shots in night/darkness. Your dark shots were a pain the eyes.

    ##The Sense of Freedom##
    Didn’t get it.
Some visuals in the beginnig were good.
Good experimentation with the aspect ratio.

    ##A real bollywood fan##
Will repeat what I said about Face Value:
This time there are many films like this – you get some visuals without any effort, add some tangentially related message at the end, and voila, there is a short film.

    ##Rape & Revenge?##
The last dialogue was not clear.

    ##Fling##
The camera angles and compositions should have supported the BGM in creating the mood.
    Acting needs improvement.

    ##The last puff##
    Smoking actually reduces sleep.
The message could have been expressed in much better ways.

    ##Pragati##
    Good title design.
Cliched theme for a movie. The situation was worsened by those sentences in the beginning.
The actress performed well in the beginning, but fumbled towards the end.

    ##The Broken Friend##
Good one. Good animations. Good BGM.

    ##Paani##
Like the “Off Track Productions” title.
Seemed too lone. The entire message could have been conveyed with just three shots – the water wasted in the glasses, water wasted while shaving, and water dripping

    from the pipe.
How is the statistics on sanitation relevant to this short?

    ##Daaru=0##
    Good lighting. Good narration.
The last question could have been avoided.
That accident could have been picturised in some indirect way.

    ##Smoking…##
    Good last shot.
Was the last message intended to be satirical?

    ##Careful ur next##
“Film by” message persisted too long.
    Dialogue was not clear.

    ##Mean green##
Good last shot. But there was no need to highlight the messages on paper and trees.

    ##Confession By Mumbaikar##
Good intentions. But you needed a better script.

Thanks Shahul for your comments about Pragati,

Infact we were discussing this. We almost completely agree about the things that you mentioned about Pragati. I hope you liked Alive better.

Pragati was our first time at a camera, acting, dialogue writing, screenplay, editing and everything. Its a little embarassing but we worked hard to come up with it :)

    ##The Inbetweenist##
Didn’t get what happened in the end.
    Too “talky”.

    ##Life=Movie##
So much of creativity wasted on a bad message.

    ##Seeking Love##
Didn’t get if you are supporting or opposing homosexuality.

    ##The Start##

    ##Dimag bhi naaa, bas…##
    Good concept.
Shot selection could have been better. It was not clear if “Kuch baath karoon kya” is a dialogue or a monologue.

    ##Justice##
    Well made. Excellent plotting.
Could have been in competition section.

    ##The Start##
Good. We needed a “Public Disservice Ad” to counter all those amateurish antismoking PSAs.

    ##Virtual Childhood##
    Good one.
The adult guy’s last dialogue was not clear.
Shots could have been composed better. A better location with many foreground and background objects would have helped.

    ##Thathsath v.02##
    Good twist. Good acting.
    This was the better version.
Your subtitles were flowing out of the screen.
    ####

    ##Aakhir hua kya hai##
    Hmmm…
Screen action was not uniform – you showed that tilt down from that tree, but did not show how they entered that building.

    ##I’ll Be There##
    Didn’t get the plot.
    Megha is a wonderful actress.

    ##Comma##
    Didn’t get it.

    ##Swan Song##
Good acting. Bad reason for a suicide.

  65. @ Amit Mishra,
    Thanks for the kind words…

    @ Shahul,
Thanks for the kind words on the actor, I will definitely tell him.

I will certainly work to improve on my writing for future films…
But I do believe that forcing students to study against their will drive them to take extreme step. Though I may have failed in showing that properly.

    hi shahul
    thanks for the review,,
it felt really nice to see” good concept”..

” kuch baat karu kya” and the rest was the thoughts that were going on in that person’s mind..
the difference in the sound depicting the dialogues shows the thought process and the talks they had in real….
    thanks again
