DEATH IN OUR FILMS
It is said that death is ultimate truth and when ever death comes to my mind, what also comes is our films… because as a true filmi bug, i use to correlate everything with our bollywood films. This is very strange that we all know that death will come one day but still we are not able to accept it…well leave it, we’ll discuss this on some other day. So, here i am discussing about death in our bollywood films, i think the best is defined by Big B in Anand in beautiful lines as :-
Maut tu ek kavitaa hai mujhse ek kavita ka vada hai milegi mujhko
doobti nabzon mein jab dard ko neend aane lage
Death scenes has always been an integral part of our films and some times they played an important role in success of films. I am presenting here my choice of some of the best death scenes in bollywood. I must have missed some (as it is my first post on pfc), so please contribute and tell me about the missed ones and your choice also…
ANAND :
I think the best death scene in bollywood is from Anand. Kya scene hai boss…. Anand maraa nahi, Anand maraa nahi karte. Heart of every soul cries after watching Rajesh Khanna dying. Look at the face of Amitabh Bachhan, when he realises that Anand is no more..nothing can beat this scene and this scene was the soul of Anand…have a look Babumoshay :
Sholay :
Here comes the most popular and landmark movie of Indian cinema, Sholey… Big B has got perfection in dying on screen. It was the first time in my life when i cried while watching a film and that was the scene of Jai dying in arms of Viru, which forced me to do so, that harmonica in background and that sad song.. yeh dosti hum nahi…was too much.. maar dala yaar…
“Bus ek baat reh jayegi Viru, tere bachon ko kahani nahi suna saka”!!!! dil chir diya…!!!
Have a look :
Muqaddar ka Sikandar :
Who better then Big B knows how to die on screen and i think his best was in Muqaddar ka Sikandar… while Vinod Khanna singing :
Zindagii To Bevafaa Hai Ek Din Thukaraaegii
Maut Mahabuubaa Hai Apane Saath Lekar Jaaegii
Mar Ke Jiine Kii Adaa Jo Duniyaa Ko Sikhalaaegaa
Vo Muqaddar Kaa Sikandar… jaaneman Kahalaaegaa…
Have a look :
Deewar :
Big B again…what to say about this film and this man yaar… words will end but not the discussion… is there any better script then of deewar in bollywood…? those one lines :
tum log mujhe bahar dhund rahe ho or mein tumhara yahan intezar kar raha hun..
mein aaj bhi phenke hue paise nahi uthata
above all.. MERE PASS MAA HAI…
and that mandir scene…aaj khush to bahut hoge tum
and in the end comes Vijay dying in maa ki god mein… saying :
tu naraaz to nahi hai Maa…have a look :
Agneepath :
I hope i am not giving over dose of Big B, even if i am giving, i know u will not mind. Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (pura naam) walking on Agneepath speaking:
Vriksh ho bhale khade, ho ghane ho bade, Ek pat chhav ki mang mat, mang mat, mang mat Agneepath Agneepath Agneepath.
Tu na thakega kabhi, tu na thamega kabhi, tu na mudega kabhi, Kar shapath, kar shapath, kar shapath, Agneepath, Agneepath, Agneepath.
Ye mahaan drishya hai, chal raha manushya hai, Ashru swed raqt se lathpath, lathpath, lathpath, Agneepath, Agneepath, Agneepath.
Agneepath was one of the last movie of Big B where we watched him in that raw and angry role… we miss those days… we want them back again… Amitabh Bachhan also got National Film Award for Best Actor for this movie. In the end Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Pura naam) after giving back Mandwa to his mother, Suhasini Chauhan says… Maa meine haath dho liye hai…have a look :
Shakti :
Big B, once again with his idol Dilip Saab. Both were too good in this film. Big B once said “I could not look into the eyes of Dilip Kumar while shooting Shakti and did retakes all the time as I forgot the dialogues” In the end Dilip Kumar killed his own son before warning him… mein kehta hun rok jao Vijay…varna main goli chala dunga… just look at the intensity in both these great actors in this last scene, where Vijay dies :
Qurbani :
This is the scene where a friend Qurbans his life for friendship… and i think this is one of the best performance of Vinod Khanna. In the end Vinod Khanna was killed by Shakti Kapoor, while saving life of Feroz Khan.
Farishto ko nahi milta yeh wo jazba hai jo
naseeba saath ho jiske wohi deta hai qurbani….
I dont have the video of this, if somebody does, please post it….
Kal Ho Naa Ho :
Kal ho naa ho was inspired from Anand but i think SRK did a very good job. If we dont compare it with Anand, it was a nice effort and in the end when he died… that was superb..thoda jyada emotional tha..but i loved that, kya marra hai yaar..background score is too good.. have a look :
Devdas :
I know this may raise some eyebrows but SRK again was in his best while dying in Devdas with that background score… ho rama ho hoo… are o devaa…kaash paaro ne gate cross kar liya hota…SRK rocks… have a look :
Vastav :
Who can forget Sanju Baba as Raghu Bhai in Vastav. It is said that Tom Hanks got birth to do Cast Away and if that is true then Sanju Baba got birth to do Vastav. Sanju Baba performance was outstanding in Vastav. The end scene of Raghu being killed by her mother or you can say giving mukti to Raghu is a landmark scene and that voice of the jhula after fire… what to say.. have a look :
Naam :
Naam was the first movie, in which i realised that this man can really act very well. His performance in Naam was too good, even though movie was made to revive career of Kumar Gaurav but whole credit was stolen by Sanju Baba and the scene where police fired Sanjay Dutt was very well framed…
I dont have the video of this, if somebody does please post it….
Qayamat se Qayamat tak :
Such a beautiful love story, with tragic ending.. kabhi kabhi pyar mein marna bhi bahut haseen hota hai…born to die for love…
Papa kehte thae bada naam karega…
Beta hamara aisa kaam karega…
Have a look :
Khakee :
Yeh neeli aankhen marwayegi ek din.. and at last those blue eyes killed Shekhar Shana urf our Akki. Akshay was outstanding in khakee… One of the best and underrated performance of Khiladi Kumar…have a look :
Shaheed :
One of the best film on freedom struggle and superb performance by all actors…
Shaheedon ki mazar pe her baras lagenge mele…
Watan pe mar mitne walon ka yahi baaki nishan hoga…
JAI HIND…
have a look :
Please add your list of scenes and in the end i would like say :

Bhikkhu mahtre in Satya?? I was dumbfounded when I saw it for the first time. No dialogues, no background theme music, it was like a kick in your balls. It was the the best death scene in Indian films IMO.
I think the death of Satya was one of the best death scenes in Bollywood movies.
Ram Gopal Varma had a touching epilogue for the movie: “My tears for Satya. As well as for the people whom he killed.”
I loved th death scene of Ajay Devgan in Company, totally unexpected and bham!! he is gone. RGV used the same in the death of Bhiku Mathre in Satya..out of no where…
Kamal Hasan in Saagar. No one has made the kind of a face-after-death, in Hindi cinema as him in the movie.
Ohh god..how the hell did i forget Naseer saab in Sarfarosh!!
oz..Naseer’s death was on par with Kamal’s here…remember, Naseer choking o his own blood? Holy fuck..had never seen such a death scene!!
Even nana patekar in Parinda..SRK in Darr ;-)
there was an overdose of amitabh, but still missed his best. Death scene in Armaan.
roodrow & Vishal oops…i forget to include Bhikku mahtre in Satya. There should be seperate post for death scenes in RGV’ films, be it satya, company or Vishnu in Sarkar…
Om ji, yes Naseer Saab in Sarfarosh.. that agony on his face… one of the best
Nice post man…wish you hadn’t included Hammy Khan’s scenes here though…
@ dazedandconfused.. thanks u like it and regarding Hammy Khan… sir i was knowing that reactions will come..but still i like him and he did quite decent job…
commendable effort. subah subah maar daala. ;-)death is but a part of life. some filmi deaths that stayed with me:
>> mogambo in mr. india
>> all deaths in j p dutta saab’s fauji films
>> naseer saab in krrish
>> mahesh manjrekar’s death in 99. before that i never laughed at anyone dying, but if u see the film, even u will fall down laughing! :-)
>> rani mukherji dying in KKHH
>> raj kapoor in mera naam joker
>> saif ali khan in ek haseena thi
>> all deaths in omkara
>> all deaths in company
>> kangana & shiney’s death in gangster
.
if dimaag ki batti jali, will add more!
srk death scene in devdas i mean that was such a torture, in kal ho na ho, there is no as such death scene.
Rest all were good selection, i agree srk is a good actor, but the scene you mentioned are bad.
IMO..Seher’s death scenes were quite unexpected and shocking. Not the best though but they were good.
blunder on my part.. how could i miss Vaheeda Rehman and Dilip Saab in Mashaal…ae bhai ese bhi include karo bhai..
@ Magik thnks for appreciation and regarding Mahesh Manjrekar death scene in 99, absolutly right..
@ Cinemausher, i agree scene of kal ho naa ho was not of death of SRK, but still it was his end, even though exact death was not shown…
Good post Akash, loved the fact that you included so many Big B movies…….I heard somewhere that the death scene in Deewar was unscripted, and employed sync sound?
The final death scene of “Ek Duje ke Liye” could find a mention here…..
@ avn, thnks and the scene that was undubbed and where you can hear sync sound was the mandir scene where Vijay says.. aaj khush to bahut hoge tum.. Yash Chopra was so impressed that he said that Amitabh could not deliver better dialogue delivery then this and the original one was kept in the movie..
Rang de basanti ko sirf main hi yaad karta hun kya !!!
A very good post, and u said right Akash, there should be a seprate post on death sceans of RGV’s film. Almost all the dying sceans of satya , Company, Sushant’s in Jungle etc were brilliant.
@Akash,
you forgot one more outstanding death scene which involves Kamal hassan in film SAGAR.
I would like to add some more:
1)Ransa’s death in Gulal
2)Duki Banna’s death in Gulal
3)Atul kulkarni’s death in Chandani Bar
4)Naseerudin Shah’s death in China Gate
5)How can any one forget about Rang de Basanti.
@ Rajeev k Singh, thnks u like it and my mistake not to include Ransa’a and Duki Banna’s death scene… kabhi kabhi dimag ki batti gul ho jati hai…but thats why we all are here on pfc..i.e. to share..!!
@ Akash
Yahich to……:)..!!
Does anybody out here remember Rajesh Khanna’s death scene in Safar ? This one was truly unique in that it was filmed from dying person’s perspective (Blurring senses so well reflected by receding voices of Ashok Kumar, Sharmila Tagore in the scene). IMHO, this scene walks away with the cake.
salman’s in hello brother lol
but guys watch out for salmans death in phir milenge..am serious here
Unintended comedy: The death scene of madhuri’s father in Prem Pratigya. Never seen such innovative death.
I always itch to ‘categorize’ such broad topics, but I have a fetish for listing things. For example Death scenes in Hindi Cinema can be subdivided into the following categories-
1. Sudden death( Shool, Satya, Johnny Gaddar)
2. Slow death (All Nirupa Roy death scenes)
3. Shocking death- Parinda, Vastaav, Gulaal
4. Long dialogue before dying ( Most 80’s death scenes)
5. Implied death ( Ek Hasina Thi, Being Cyrus)
6. Tear jerking death ( Sholay, Anand).
7. Comical death- JBDY, 99,
8. Innovative Death- Prem Pratigya, Mithun’s & Rajinikant’s movies.
then it can also be subdivided as cause of death-
a. Accident- truck, car, jeep, horse, cycle etc
b. Murder- bullet, stabbing, iron rod, slap, kick, rape, dialouges.
c. Natural disasters- flood, earthquake, snake bite, ugly heroines, bad script.
d. Disease- Brain Tumor, Brain Cancer, Blood Cancer, Bhoot, Hole in the heart, Hole in the brain,
d. Suicide- by rope, poison, jumping from tall buildings, having sex with villain’s sister.
See, actually it has a great research potential.
@ ~uh~, very well categorisation (bad script, having sex with villain’s sister, Mithun’s & Rajinikant’s movies) lol.. really it has a great research potential..
Rani mukherjee in Hey ram.
A good list. But as you said there was an overdose of Amitabh in it. Here are a few additions:
1) Guru Dutt in Kaagaz Ke Phool
2) Sunil Dutt in Mother India
3) Rajendra Kumar in Sangam
4) Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari in Baiju Bawra
5) Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala in Gunga Jumna
6) Dev Anand in Guide
akshay khanna in BORDER( i got emotional watching that when akshay was getting shot by enemies bullets and then he see his mother running towards him)
sunny deol in JEET(since sunny very rarealy dies in his movies this was unexpected and was well picturized scene)
Manoj bajpai in Satya (this one was the one of the most shocking and unxepcteddeath scene)
i also add Dharampaaji’s death scene in Johny Gaddar
just like manoj’s death in Satya this was also very shocking death scene
really good compilation and equally good response from all pfc readers. I had just one naughty query “Did Michael Mann has seen Shakti last scene before making Heat?”
Nice theme for the article. My personal fav is Shakti. Dilip Kumar and Amitabh are just perfect in the scene and the buildup right from Amitabh escaping from the jeep is excellent. Its my favorite Hindi movie!
so-bad-that-it-is-good deaths
1) Lambu Atta’s death
2) Lambu Atta’s brother Kundan’s death
3) Bulla’s sister Munni’s death
in Gunda
@ yayaver, thnks for ur admiration.. and we need to ask Michael Mann, whether he has seen Shakti last scene before making Heat. koi mile Michael Mann se, to puch lena and plz tell everybody..
@ ravi, thnks… shakti is also one of my fav and that background score was too good..
@ Movie Fan, Akshay Khanna death scene in border, kaafi emotional tha… and that voice of rakhi.. Dharamvir… betaa…good
Akash: Good ‘list’ concept for a post!!Though I would have preferred it as ‘Death in Hindi films’.
Some good ones in Tamil:
Kamal in Nayakan
Sathyaraj in Pagal Nilavu
Asin in Ghajini
In Hindi, I liked the much under-rated character of Vidya Balan in Guru. She is the silent admirer of Guru Bhai. After her death comes Guru Bhai’s clever defense (that manipulates all his admirers).
Anand your choice, Asin in Ghajini quite good… that was the best scene of popcorn ghajini…
