Defending Anish Kuruvilla
confessions of a filmmaker
Why does a filmmaker make a movie?…..to tell a story…to tell something he passionately believes in…to connect to the world with his story..to tell the world what he feels…..are there any boundaries?…..think twice before answering this…..well apparently there are some pseudo-watchmen existing in the Telugu film industry who are hell bent of tearing apart Anish for his latest creation Naa Video Diary’- Confessions of the film maker…there are watch dogs who are eagerly waiting for their new dog-food i.e Anish kuruvilla….
It pains me no bounds to hear that the movie might never be released….it pains to hear that the esteemed Telugu film industry is so sissy that they cannot face a mirror….it pains to see that the Telugu film industry is hell bent on not changing…..here is one man who had the balls to make the movie he made and every masked person from the industry, from the press from the production houses is trying to threaten him…threaten him of his survival..threaten him of his existence in the film industry..threatening him to make sure that none of his or his friend’s ( Sekhar Kamulla’s) movie see the light of the screens…..LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY
I had been reading quite a few reviews on the private screening that Anish did for his movie….and what do i find…..every one says the movie is bold…but, none is there to give a pat on his back and say…..” Thank you Anish….you said what we always talk about in the living room…but never had the balls to come out in open and state it…thank you for taking our cause…thank you…”….instead it is so baffling to see that..most of them are so sadhu-santh’s that they couldn’t hear the mother fucking ” F” word…..these self-confessed protectors of morals are not living in the world i am living……one reviewer is such a virgin that he/she thinks that ” piss” is profanity…..wow…hats off to you…
The producers, the directors, the press…who should be backing Anish for his vision and his story..instead are taking the safe route of saying ” bold movie…but….why did you do this…you are doomed”…..here is one movie-maker who said what he had to without being hypocritical……then there are others who have pledged that Anish’s next produced movie directed by Sekhar kamulla would never see the light…infact he says..he will fucking make sure it will not be released……….Hats off Anish….for showing what most might not even know….and nah..i am not talking about what you have in the movie…most of us haven’t even watched it….but the reactions that you are getting sums up the sorry state of Telugu Industry in which are pouring millions into….please find me a profane synonym for Hypocrisy…..
The Press
Please help me emote here..the choices are
A. Laughter
B. Anger
C. Sorrow
D. Puke
Why? take this for instance…
www.greatandhra.com states ” He hasn’t spared any hero in this 95 minute film”
OM: Hitler Anish…..please spare them…..ooops..i thought you had a story to tell about the Telugu Film industry and “hero’s” are a part of it…..
GA goes on to state about this journalist…..”A young female journalist asked, “Aneesh! It would had been better had you cut down the dialogues with words like gudda and sallu”. (Yes! The journalist too asked boldly literally uttering the words loudly)”
OM: For non telugu speaking readers…Gudda = Ass, Sallu = Breast…..What have you done Anish…..why did you have to say these words…you could have actually taken a close angle shots of the ass and the boobs of a plump actress….you know..its ok to do that..but ayyila…shame shame pappi shame…you used those words? chi chi chi…how am i gonna watch with my mummy and pappa who have no objections for other double-meaning words for the same anatomy?
From Total Tollywood:
“And though the film runs a disclaimer that it is strictly for people older than 18, the language used in the film is still unacceptable. ( total tollywood)”
OM: What have you done Anish…did you not know that you have to ask the person from Total Tollywood on the acceptance of certain language….he/she for once is sitting up there making decisions for me you and our neighbor…..or maybe we can pardon the person..he/she probably had never heard the language used….please provide the meaning of the words from next time..ok?
From www.telugucinema.com
“Anish points seem justifiable but they are contradictory in nature and perceived in myopic view and at times look perverted (pointing middle finger, using F word). ( telugu cinema.com)”
OM: Voila….Eureka….this person has given a new meaning to “perverted”…..i am so fucking naive that i fucking had no clue as to what the showing of the fucking middle finger meant…i grew up fucking thinking that showing the fucking middle finger always meant ” Fuck you”….TeluguCinema.com…I might be be wrong…correct me…ohh and please listen to rajnish’s audio for the meaning of fuck…..
Navya Vaitla from telugucinema says ” People don’t come to have orgasm, man. Naval gazing is not sin as you made out to be. In Hollywood and matured World Cinema, they go further and show heroines naked”
OM: errrr..i had always gone to the cinema halls to jerk off…..to have visual masturbation and orgasm….Navya…seriously help me in reacting to your comment…..right now i am ROFLMAO…..
I really pity the Telugu industry…pity because its gonna get rusted in the shed it is in right now…… It is such ironical, the scene which comes to my mind about the sorry state of this is from recent Gunam Gangaraju Produced Anukokunda okka Roju….where the character hides his face when his chaser finds him……Everyone knows what Anish talks about in his movie is true..but…i guess its better to act like a cat…close your eyes when the master catches you stealthily drinking milk….
Anish sums up his side of story aptly
“my one question/answer to that is….is everything our stars have done so far been politically correct?….if yes…then my film doesn’t have a case….if no…then my film does….what do you say? ”
Hell right Anish…we are with you…..Good luck….keep doing what you are doing…do not give up….

Anish – kojja gaalla madhya bratikey *sulli unna magavadiki* bhadrata ledu. a man living amongst eunuchs can NOT be safe. take care of yourself and call upon PFC should need be. we are with you. i think of it as operation jaleem lotion… telugu cinema ki pattina gajji vadiliddam – let’s cure telugu cinema.
OM :-
i followed anish’s blog since the first day of his shoot and put in some encouraging words for him…
i tried my best to publicize his blog and movie trying to explain the actual motivation and concept for him to make this kind of movie..
to my surprise and not to my surprise too….thr r many young telugu movie buffs who doesn’t want to buy the point, they inturn started naming anish…
i missed to go to the premier here, but this is what i wrote in one of the blogs i visit..
“He is mainly opposed to the star system, nepotism and the mindset of the industry bigwigs especially the star heroes for influencing the masses into accepting escapist cinema. He heavily criticizes TFI for time and again dishing out the same mediocre flicks which has no artistic value. He wants TFI to wake up and take notice of the changing face of cinema all over the world and also other parts of India.
One good thing about this person is that he is not blind about Indian culture and taste of an average Indian. He understands the economics involved, but believes that we should slowly and gradually habituate ourselves into making meaningful cinema.
It takes time for the masses to digest but atleast an attempt should be made.
Yes, the attempt and the attitude is seriously missing on part of the actors and producers. What’s with the directors then is a big ?
I personally feel that the seed of frustration and hatred was sown in his mind when good scripts of sekhar kammula and hizz were rejected by big stars. I may b partly wrong again.
when compared to anish, rgv is a selfish and oppurtunistic person..he ran away from TFI declaring that his kind of movies do not work when made in one language and the masses wouldn’t watch, i blame nag also partly for the state of TFI, he had the guts, but he also gradually became a part of escapist cinema..
btw..i used to worship nag and rgv back then, so i have the right to criticize them
Lovers of honest cinema at PFC and beyond are with you. Do not lose hope. Keep going! We are here to back you up.
and i have to thank anish for introducing me this place….
he has high regards for passionforcinema and anurag kashyap
I wish everyone was allowed to make the movies he/she wished.
He can try for a single screen release with minimal prints at least !!! Or at least the multiplex crowd in Hyderabad and other posh cities in Andhra will be excited to watch it.
Heck … Subtitle it and release it in other cities too !!!!
I know it is easier said than done.. But plsss Anish we all wanna see this film ….
Watch Dev Anand’s Censor. It about a filmmaker who is not able to release his film because of the censorboard. He gets his film released in a few theatres outside India and wins an Oscar.
Dev Anand had tried to give a message through this film. But not many people heard it. He had said that Indian’s should stop being hypocrites. Why can’t we use the language in movies which we use in normal life? Why can’t we show sex in movies?
Hi ppl
Its quite interesting to find out how will this all end (or even start again!)…
anish’s youtube page is here:
best of luck anish!….howley gallevvvaru nijam oppukoru, endukantey ee industry lo abaddamadithey dabbulostai. (fools never accept truth because only falsehood gives you money in this industry)
best of luck again and again.
Thanks OM for such a nice defence..in fact he need not be defended right now because the judgement is not in the hands of VIPs and Press but in the hands of masses.
Justin, An Indian film maker cannot commercially release his/her movie in India or Abroad without a Censor Board Certificate.
As of now Anish can cut his version of the movie and send it to film festivals around the world – for which a censor certificate is not required.
Right now Anish has to focus on his product and ways to get it out to the world, inspite of all the vicious opposition – which is quite natural to arise – cause there’s always RESISTANCE – to CHANGE…
Anish’s film may be good, bad or plain ugly, but every movie deserves a release, let the audience decide whether they want to see it or not.
The personal attacks and the threatening phone calls to him lay bare the environment of MAFIA-ISM that exists – that dictates only one mantra – my way or the highway… and why does it exist in a democratic state?
Great story Om..Keep up the good work.I admire the effort to show support.Am with you on this..
the best thing i can suggest as a telugu guy who missed out on the preview and dying to watch the movie(my friends r also interested, not dying to see though)…beep the bloody coarse language….it’s fun for some but to hear them in full sound is embarassing and do take notice that some youngsters below 16 years may also watch it….f word is okay i guess…but the direct telugu words like gu…beep..pu..beep..la…beep..de…beep(actually in english they do not sound too harsh, like s as in as is the gu..word, b in itch is la..word, and pu..word starts with pu..in english also))start the word and then beep it, crowd wl definitely understand it,
u need to face the censors to see what they have to say and u can take it from there and convince them…especially because of these bad words censor people wl straight away object (thr r women members also as far as i know)..
u have to try and release it in theaters…
immediately ask for protection and use this oppurtunity for publicity, that’s not a bad idea, u need to take it into the crowd…give disclaimers..do something cunningly from now on…
Jai it is an adult movie….only 18 + allowed….moreover no one is forcing anyone to go watch the movie….if anyone cannot here the f word..they should not go to watch the movie…what pisses me off is, who the fuck are these insiders to decide, what i should watch and what i should’nt
@ Jai..nice to see you coming back on PFC…loving you over here.
common guys, even a 5th grader know what gudda, sulli, sallu n etc., means and most of the highschool or intermediate kids are expert in creating their own curse words, so when some makes some thing original and close to real world people talk using curse words to show their anger and disappointment.
gud luck anish
On lighter note if some one threatens you just tell them
“Tereko jaya aunty maloom, Lallu uncle maloom yeh sab mere peeche hai kya samjaha?”
oz, I know that an Indian film maker cannot commercially release his/her movie in India or Abroad without a Censor Board Certificate. But, I was talking about the movie “Censor”. Dev Anand, in the movie, had got his film released somehow, don’t remember but it was done illegally. Legal action was taken against him for that in the movie.
I don’t know about Aneesh’s film. But many movies which have used abusive language and the F word have been released. I have even seen Indian movies , right now I remember only one movie “Aram Tampuran”, where somebody shows their middle finger. But if Anish had used that unnecessarily and just to show that it is a bold movie, then people who watch it might get irritated.
There is no reason for anybody to threaten Anish and for using abusive language in the movie. But, if he has directly insulted any person living or dead, then there is a problem. In movies like “Bollywood Caling” “Udayannannu Taram” many stars and filmmakers had been made fun of, indirectly. The audience loved it also.
OM, great blog man. Good that you wrote it. Well done.
Anish, did a great job. I saw the trailor in one of the sites. That short exposure was awesome in terms of the passion I saw. Telugu Film Industry is a shame, compared to even other industries of south and the country. It needs a shake up. I am sure millions of people are willing to work, make and pay to see good cinema outside the existing joke called the industry. Only the acceptance and response by the common man to this kind of cinema will change things.
Dear OM,
Thank you so much for the initiative you took. I am really overwhelmed that someone thought it worthwhile to take out so much of their time to write in support of me…This truly is a first for me…and, what can I say? I hope my film lives upto your’s and everyones expectations and even if it doesnt, I am glad that I am going to be doing all that I can possibly do,to ensure my film reaches guys like you. That in itself is success for me.
regards
Anish.
@ Anish…no worries….I think we the Film-Viewers have a responsibility to promote good cinema. I want to see more and more indie-cinema from India to emerge…No one has a right to do what they are doing to you….We as PFC will help you in any which way possible.
Having said..we will not shy from trashing the movie if its not good ;)
Good Luck Bhai…
well said Om! :d
“Gunam Gangaraju the producer of Ayithe and Anukokunda Okka Roju goes to extent of saying Anish to never show his face to him
@ Anish…thanks for the clarifications…..really appreciate it. The line has been removed…My Bad.
Anish,
I have heard a lot about your adventure with this movie. We don’t want to miss this movie. May be, even if it takes you to make little changes to the so called ‘BAD’ words as suggested by CB, you should bring this movie to our Audience..Our people will definitely receive your movie..We, watching your ‘Anand’ at least once in a week illustrates that.
Not sure if any of you have seen ‘1-40 ki last local’ you will find another great example of presenting a satire!!Excuse me, Rajni’s Fans:))
AND Thanks OM for providing SO MANY details:))
