Delhi 6 Movie Review

Finally…am relieved. Since the first promo came out, i was dying to watch the film. And after the music release, masakalli and maula were good enough reasons to catch the film first day first show. And then i slowly discovered rehna tu and dil gira. And some of us do have luck by chance, as we get to watch the film even before its release.

If you have been desperate like me, am sure you know the story…. Roshan (Abhishek) comes to India with his Dadi and its about what n how he discovers in delhi 6. From masakalli to maula mere maula and ram leela to remote leela its a beautiful collage that captures the flavour of the place and addresses some big n small issues. The only problem is it gets too preachy at times n too much gyaan. Add to that Abhishek’s too many smartass lines in voiceover. And Dear Rakeysh, the last 10minutes…..why ? why ? why ? Why would you want to kill it like that ??? It seems all those stories about the ending was true….to be or not to be dictated by commercial prospects. And a irritating BIG cameo all of a sudden. And voiceovers again!!

The film belongs to the ensemble cast, a r rahman and binod pradhan. Waheeda Rahman, Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri, Supriya Pathak, Pavan Malhotra, Sheeba, Vijay Raaz, Deepak Dobriyal, Divya Dutta and Atul Kulkarni holds the film together. And when surrounded by such superb actors, Abhishek and Sonam look like the weakest links in the film. With Abhishek’s strange n fake accent, he even irritates and eats up the lines. But the best thing is that Abhishek-Sonam’s love track doesnt have too many words but has some great warm moments…… when they look into each other’s eyes in dimly lit frames, it says much more than when they deliver their lines. Wish Rakeysh could cut out many more gyaan-guni lines about India and indians. Also, would love to hear what the SDM-haters have to say about this one.

And who is that new face ?? ( vasan n me have been trying to find more about her since we saw her in genda phool song) And yes, got to know she is Aditi Rao Hydari….wow!! Binod Pradhan’s camera makes you feel you are just there with a handycam view of the place. And it feels great to hear Raghuvir Yadav go full throttle…why they didnt include his Ramleela tracks in the cd ??

For fans of OLLO, cheer up guys…here comes one more journey film rather than a destination one which doesnt stick to strong plots. But it slowly leads up to the final 20 minutes and its done brillantly. Though many charcaters and scenes are cliches.

And is it about the monkey man ? Oh ye ye…..physical, metaphysical, metaphorical….its there at all level…much like Masakalli! Wouldnt like to spoil the fun.

Was very disappointed to see only bit of maula mere maula as i was expecting the full 8 min song and also a “khwaja mere khwaja” moment like Gowariker did in Jodha Akbar. But man, want to watch the film once again to see the song dil gira daftan….dont remember when was the last time a dream was captured with so much love on the big screen.

Please do check out Delhi 6. Its galli mohalla joyride in sepia mood without any jazz! And since we all are star struck, I will go with 3.5/5.

Extra features….Agyaat (promo)….Ramu is back. M scared. Ramu is back with Nisha Kothari. M almost dead.

KAMINEY (promo)…..looks KILLER!!!!! The Master is back and its dhan tarang dhan tarang…..coming FOON….how FOON ??? the wait begins!!

it’s bad film. the entire film is like a set-up towards god-knows-what. mostly, felt like a khichdi of sorts! at your own risk, totally!
the film just didn’t do enough justice to its music. Rehman is the only one who shines. save money, don’t watch it! buy the music though.

  14. Aditi Rao Hyderi’s first (and only) film now has been Sharada Ramanathan’s Shringaram in Tamil, which was in the Indian Panorama of IFFI a few years ago. She is a qualified dancer, and in Shringaram she acted quite well for a debutante. Now that she has acted in a big budget Bollywood film, she will definitely get noticed. She deserves to get noticed!

“Also, would love to hear what the SDM-haters have to say about this one”– I am more interested in seeing critics(reviewers) how they rate the movie. If a “gora” makes a movie about India they write eulogies, give five stars…now I am eager to see Mehra’s fate…already got some idea and my belief in “ghar ki murgi daal baraabar,” strengthens even more.

Hmmm Interesting review! Looks like it is far from perfect flick! Will get to know soon! But too grossly hyped without matter! If we notice, the trailers are all put videos of AR Rahman tracks and one mouthful of dialogue by Sonam – No hint of anystory and yet we come to expect the moon from Mehra :)

Super effort. What a montage is this Delhi pincode!!!!!

“Dil gira kahin” is the song of ‘09. Most innovative and great execution….the crux of Delhi-6….summs up the entire film….pat on the back for Team ROPM…take a bow but for the last 10 mins…what the heck…forgiven :)

A little jerky in flow…but then thats what I loved most about it…why does cinema have to follow a structure when life itself has none…let the box office Gods be the nanad’s chutki and the saas’s gaali but this Genda Phool is fresh and bright and hip and it works…..

Great that ROPM and Dibakar went for such a followup to their commercial hits…both riding on such strongly ingrained in the public memory films….both so internal than their earlier efforts….both come out as winners…’09 is the year!!!! our year!!!! Cheers to that bhai…cheers to that!!!!

I heard Sonam Kapoor say ” The chemistry between her & Abhishek is so good on screen” – REALLY????? There was not one scene which was romantic…
Raghuvir Yadav was not at all exploited..
Dil gira daftan was beautiful so was massakali. Didn’t like the story. Few scenes were just too brilliant like the azaan at masjid….

Had high expectation from Rakyesh…I am disappointed maybe I saw Dev.D and liked it more than Delhi6..it didn’t even live upto its name.

News channel bit was too much…just too much.
    It just degraded IBN7..

I will give 2/5 just because it is Mehras Movie…

I watched Delhi 6 yesterday night and decided to check out the movie review in PFC today morning (curioisity kills the cat). I was once again depressed this morning to read the praises showered upon a film (in the review) which is yet standing tall and “being considered” just because it’s a Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra film.
I can only give points to the below apsects of the film:
    1. Music
    2. Acting of Waheeda Rehman and some of the supporting cast (what a waste of Pavan Malhotra!!)

To be really honest, the rest can be easily avoided without any qualms.

I think Delhi 6 brings out the true essence of Chandni Chowk. The people, the food, the clothes… I think when I was in Delhi and went to Chandni Chowk I saw this – people are verrrrry friendly and are “ONE” and I saw this in the movie too.. I could not stop but think about the Jalebis I had during my stay in Delhi and my visit to Chandni Chowk… All I could see when I was there is that people were eating and making merry and so was the case in Delhi 6!

This movie makes me want to go back to delhi and also to the streets of Chandni chowk, even if for nothing else but for the jalebis and if I do meet a real Roshan there I wouldn mind being Bittu!

Man I think its kind of unfair to pan the climax so badly…I think it kind of brought home the message the director was trying to convey…I liked it simply because it didn’t really jar with my movie watching experience…and Abhishek bachchan’s accent had to be irritating..any indian returned from america sounds irritating!!
