Delhi 6 Reviews
After the stupendous success and acclaim of Rang De Basanti, Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 has opened to a mixed reaction from the “critics”.
Amitabh Mande from Buzz18 gives it a 1 star( i totally disliked his review)
While rediff gives it 4 star
and India Times 2.5 stars

That reviewer from buzz18 was the only one to criticise Delhi 6’s music. He gets only negative comments on his posts.
After Dev D its Delhi 6…Why such variedd taste or ..? 1 star to 4/5 star
The promos looked interesting, Dil gira kept me doped for some weeks. Sonam looked pretty… But the reviews seem mixed. I am confused!

I wonder how one can “dislike” a film-review without having seen the film?!
I don’t whether Abhishek Mande even watched the movie or not…even if he did…he just didn’t get it…
Here are the international reviews and they both praise the movie whole heartedly…
http://worldfilm.about.com/od/bollywoodfilms/fr/delhi6.htm
http://www.villagevoice.com/2009-02-18/film/delhi-6-represents-the-enigmatic-india-of-today/
FYI Abhishek Mande’s review is kinda in sync with pnu’s review here. Lot of common points. Only diff pnu gives it a 3.5 and AM 1/5.
@Anuruddha : Oh yeah, you got it, it seems..
Intln reviews praise it.. So what ? Can’t AM here have his own opinion and stars ? Oh, i forgot, ‘they’ just get it…
@ Satya…Off course AM can have his own opinion. But you yourself answered your question. You said both AM and pnu mentioned lots of common points in their review…yet one gave 1/5 and the other 3.5/5…doesn’t that mean AM didnt get the movie??
I think it does…
BTW indiatimes gives it 2 stars and not 2.5 .
the people i know who have watched it , have given mixed responses but most definitely all of them say that they were left confused by the film . so aam junta will not like it , that will be taran adarsh’s verdict tomorrow. he will give it 2 stars as well.
personally from what i hear of the film , this film might just appeal to non indian audience , the white audience that is .
I was totally surprised when I saw ROM talking that he had planned to make an OST of the film ( other sound track ). For me , background music was a big disappointment.
The background music had to be big disappointment coz’ poor Rahman didn’t even have time to score as UTV wanted to release the movie @ 20th itself…
@sags – The funny thing is ROM said that he deliberately told AB not have an accent so that it will appeal more to the Indian audience and also changed the climax to suit the Indian audience.
Whoever wrote the review on indiatimes (http://movies.indiatimes.com/moviereview/4153968.cms) needs to rethink his/her career options.
Its evident that the reviewer has “made up” this review based on the other reviews he/she has read so far. The reviewer’s got the major plot point all wrong. And his/her biggest giveaway is the fact that he/she hasn’t even gotten the central character’s (Abhishek Bacchan’s) name right. Its Roshan and not Rohan.
sad.
^^ The indiatimes critic’s name is Gaurav Malani.
lol..these critics are a disgrace..
What is evident is the falling standards of A R Rahman, looks like he has passed his prime, songs like masakalli don’t take you any where, thematics like Delhi 6 are more technotronics than melody, bhor bhai is lift from Bade Ghulam Ali Khan’s bhor bhai a thumri in gurjari todi. Genda phool is a trash. Would b better if ARR comes out of sound mania and composes some plain melody, sorry if I sound harsh.
Indiatimes or timesofindia gave it 3 Starts not 2.5 …….. These days can’t depend on the reviews …… they are so varied ….. Let me go watch and then speak .
I really like the movie. I think next big movie after Dev D.
Must Watch for delhitie.
I loved it…the basic message of the film. It showed how a general community back home works. It cud be anywhere in the subcontinent Pakistan, India or Bangladesh. It shows everything that exists between people who are worried abt caste, religion, social status, family prejudice. The starting of the story takes a while so one has to be patient about it. There are number of symbolic elements Ram Leela, Kaala Bandar. Essentially the movie in the end tells you not to listen to the evil voice that once in a while tries to speak within everyone.
I think everyone knows the basic story. Roshan takes his grandmom home. His dad is Hindu but mom Muslim. He sees a lot of people in Chandni Chowk respecting his grandmoma and meets Bittu. They take a while to fall in love too, and Roshan’s realization comes when Bittu tries to do something really drastic with her life. He tries to stop her and in that process the climax happens. In the backdrop there is the emergence of Hindu-Muslim tension which happens the usual way by people of both community trying to blame the other for kaala bandaar. The cliamax essentially is the culmination of the hatred and Roshan’s concern for Bittu.
There are lots of cute sequences, and no it does not involve only sonam and abhi. This is a movie of collective individuals so every character has some quirkiness. Don’t go expecting a typical love story with some comdey and songs. In the end sensitive people hopefully will get the message of the film. It’s all about maintaining your inner goodness in times of chaos.
****1/2
NDTV gave it 3 stars, sify.com gave it 2.5 stars. Some of the audience reviews I have read have been positive! It’s not a perfect film…but it’s worth a watch!
I saw the film last night & found it brilliant. In terms of the story & screenplay, acting, Touching on various issues that are prevalant in the country. It was fabulous. What I feel a bit peeved about is the critics. Dev D got 5 stars When I saw it, i would have given it 2.5 maybe. Similarly Laga chunri was completely killed by the critics but I as a viewer found it very nice. So don’t understand how to believe the critics.
I think Taran Adarsh’s review is spot on. (http://sify.com/movies/bollywood/review.php?id=14859285&ctid=5&cid=2425 )I saw the movie last night and I didnt take home much other than the songs and the cinematography. I thought there was NO chemistry between AB and Sonam – infact no build up of the love story.I think ROM lost the plot somewhere with too many parallel tracks and trying to give everyone enough run time. At the end it meant that none of the tracks were developed enough…
My rating – 2 on 5 mainly for the music and the brilliant showcase of Old Delhi
The other vague part of the movie was that song in New York!!!! Can someone tell me what he was thinking?
Guys, instead of quibbling over which reviewer said what and gave the movie how many stars, why don’t you just go and see the movie for yourself and then let us know what YOU thought about it?
The reviewer seems to be biased and trying his hardest to buzz off
people from watching this movie. I think something terribly
wrong with this person to call this film disappointing.
Maybe he is billu and doing a favour to his almighty friend
‘bekar’-'k’.. Oops! Srk.
The movie isn’t a complete let down, it certainly has its moments. The problem with the movie is that people will try to equate it with Rakeysh’s previous flick RDB. If we watch it without any prejudices, it does ring a bell or two. Sonam is pretty gal with loads of potential, sad that Saawariya was her first film. Junior AB has come a long way from Refugee but I wouldn’t rate his performance in D6 as his best till date (he was good in yuva).
These critics r purchased anyways. so mixed reviews r obvious for that reason. Being judgmental on bolly’s critic are often hard.
@ Anonymous. I agree, sify gave it 2 and half stars and it was a balanced review. http://sify.com/movies/bollywood/review.php?id=14859289&ctid=5&cid=2425.
the review gave the music the due credit.
i also liked the mint review, didnot agree with it but it was the first one to come out.my rating is 3 stars for the music and for the casting.
The movie was a good movie. Despite it having its negatives, it definitely worked for me. I found the first half to be brilliant showcase of old Delhi. AB’s fake accent, the cliched ending and couple of other things didn’t work for me. But other than that I really liked the movie. I would even go on to say that the movie is as good as, if not better, than RDB. I wud give it a ***1/2
To be frank,Taran adarsh is a chuthiya. he gave dev d 1 star and now delhi 6 on the lane…o boi..this is a brilliant piece of filmaking in all aspects..hatts off to ROM. Personally i feet, this movie is bigger nd better than RDB(even that muvie rocked)….we are seein a change in indian cinema with directors like Anurag kashyap…ROM..Deebakar baneerji being few of em….
Looks like the guys at indiatimes are following this post. They changed the name back to “Roshan”.hehehe
DELHI 6 is a decent movie in many respects. It could be termed as a project similar to Benegal’s WELCOME TO SAJJANPUR offering. The basic idea is the same- a satire on contemporary India. Replacing the Sajjanpur folks are some cardboard characters from ol’ dilli.
But it is the same thing- religion, caste, superstition, slimy politicians, fake babas etc.
But DELHI 6 is in no way close to RANG DE BASANTi. But it still is a good movie suffering mainly due to neglecting to develop the central character of Roshan in order for us to connect.
As many do not connect there, they instantly take a dislike I guess. And suddenly no one likes to sit in a moral science class either. Last week BILLU suffered, this time probably DELHI 6 becomes the victim.

Chahe jitna star mile..
Picture to pitegiii….
i really like way movie is moved .. that kala bandar (monkey man) was symbolic of our inner darkness ,albeit its a abstract movie… need a good perception to understand ..it is not straight movie like ghajni etc ..you may forget that block bluster movie .. but trust me you will remember this for long as we do with “rand de basanti” Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra has made it again…hats up to him …. its master piece !!!!

A hideous kala bandar and not Masakali ruffles feathers in Delhi-6. Because while our genial kabootar does no more than just matak and coo, the monstrous creature performs daring sorties and actually becomes instrumental in putting across the message of co-existence when communal passions soar and tempers fray in the walled Indian capital. Get that?
This monkey business might get director Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra critical acclaim, but the chances of it jumpstarting the movie’s fortunes at the box office are narrower than some of the bylanes of Chandni Chowk, which forms the backdrop of the film.
Mehra redefined Hindi cinema with Rang De Basanti. In Delhi-6, he may have left the majority of his audience at sixes and sevens. A la Aks (his directorial debut), they just couldn’t connect with the movie’s theme. But that’s not suggesting it’s wishy-washy or insipid, because regardless of how it fares commercially, Delhi-6 will still go down as a great movie, perhaps one of the finest in recent times, and for that Mehra deserves a bow.
Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan), an American citizen of Indian origin, flies down to India with his ailing grandmother (Waheeda Rahman) for the first time and is instantly taken in by the sights and sounds of a hyperkinetic and maddening Delhi.
Despite all the chaos — traffic that snarls up because a cow is in labour, power cuts and a mysterious monkey man churning panic and sending rumour mills and television news channels into overdrive, he finds himself forging a bond with the metropolis. The journey from within (that’s the tagline, in case you missed it) begins. It’s no plain sailing alright, but initially, it’s not too bumpy either.
If Roshan is not gorging on jalebis at Mamdu’s shop in the neighbourhood or playing pool at affable Al Baig’s (Rishi Kapoor) place, he is clicking pictures from his cellphone — a blatant plug for Motorola which Abhishek endorses.
Amid all this, he’s falls in love with Bittu (Sonam) — a rebellious aspiring singer, who wants to become the next Indian idol, but much like her fettered- feathered friend Masakali, can’t break free.
A Bollywood pigeon devoid of any letter-despatching or gun snatching abilities! Give me a beak.. err. break.. What’s wrong with our script writers?
Cutting back to the story, his family background notwithstanding (his father is Hindu ad his mother, Muslim) Roshan is completely absorbed in Delhi’s unique culture. He goes to the temple and also offers prayer at the mosque. But fate and the mysterious Monkey Man ordains otherwise.
In Guru, Abhishek had to create Gurukant Desai. But Delhi-6’s Roshan is pretty much him, because much like his character in the movie, he also spent much of his childhood abroad. “There was that instant connect. If anybody could have done justice to the role, it had to be me” Abhishek said during an interview with XPRESS on Wednesday. And he was right.
Sonam was a revelation. A modest appreciation of her acting skills forbade her from making Bachchan-like claims, but one won’t be surprised if she walks away with all the honours. Vijay Raaz as the corrupt policemman is brilliant as are Om Puri, Divya Dutta, Pawan Kumar, Atul Kulkarni and Amitabh Bachchan who has a cameo.
Fast facts
The biggest highlight of the movie: AR Rahman’s music.
Overall verdict: Don’t go with too many expectations and you may like it, especially if you are from north India.
Trivia: The film’s title is based on the postal code of old Delhi which is 1100-06
Extremely boring movie.
Even if you have nothing to do, dont watch this movie.
Really this movie is great.
Don’t follow the reviews.
They want item songs in the movie, then they will appreciate lot.
Delhi 6 rocks…
The only reason one should watch Delhi6 is Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra. I want myself to trust him, I want him to show me something, I want him to take me to his nostalgic world of cinema. Whether the film works or not, it doesnt really matter. Rakeysh sir, you show us ur cinematic genius, without spoiling ur mind by what audience wants to watch. There are so many other directors out there (like Karan Johar, Nikhil Advani, Anees Bazmi & Co.) who will take care of that aspect. I would love to hear that daadi-amma’s chanda-mama tale from you and would love to fall in love with your chanda mama or Dehli 6…
really a gud attempt, thinking once again out of the box….
jay ho A.R. Rehman n omprakash mehra…..
gud movie…..
Delhi 6 is a good movie. It represents India in true sense- much better than the disappointing and overhyped S*****g Millionaire. Abhishek and Sonam are brilliant. Supporting cast is also great. Try to think India guys, don’t follow the biased reviews-WATCH IT…!
Its a gud movie to watch out. A very good social message that God is within all of us by way of mirror concept and message of equality by the character of Jalebi and Currupt Indian Politics.
A HONEST REVIEW !!
Dilli 6 a very good coneptual movie with bright ideas, basically a mirror of wats happening in the REAL india as they say! All well taken !!
The story telling is horrible!!Trust me, am not the Item number/masala two piece kinda film lover but it was soo sooo boring at parts that scenes which deserves to be appreciated also goes unnoticed.
Abishek bachan as Roshan could nt pull it off with his accent(very fake at times) and body language as a NRI.
Sonam was cute deserved more screen time.
ARR musik was awesome as always and fer the guy who tinks he has crossed his prime !! a big LOL ! 2 oscars fer a guy who has past his prime aint bad huh !?
OVERALL : Not for the masala bolly ppl !!! Good concept and plot but storytelling should have been more intersting !!
If you go back a few years – “Yuva” got a similar reception and review from a fraction of the movie goers. The main complaint was – too many plots and all characters half baked. But, gradually it turned out to be a classic winning loads of awards and the youth majority who begged to differ with the critical reviews backed it up. D6 seems to be moving towards a similar fate.Awards or no awards – its certainly going to be their in a few of the nominations.
delhi6 is a nice movie.
i saw today only.
i’ll give 4 and 1/2 out of 5.
there is an integral message too.
there is no big track for love.
phathetic fcuk all horrible is some thing wrong wiht MR ROPM after making RDB what a fuck all movie u have made pls pls pls, i had a great respect for u after seeing RDB now u have lost it pls dont be over confident dont try to preach pathetic script/ horrible screenplay /bad continuty/bad editing waste of every thing
ROPM will be really happy to lose respect from pathetic people like you, who don’t even know how to express their opinion in a public forum like this.
Please enroll for a good tutorial for learning english grammar before venting your uncalled opinion in such distasteful manner.
If you didn’t like the movie there are many subtle ways to be heard of rather than using foul language.
@raj
Yahaan bhi aa gaye?
“pathetic script/ horrible screenplay /bad continuty/bad editing”
Bub, d’you even know the difference between a script and a screenplay, and d’you even know what continuity is?
Galaxian, sahi bola!
I watched this movie this weekend. Agree with @Prem that concept was good but it wasn’t executed properly. Kala Bandar was actually the negativity inside every1. But it could have been more intersting than showing Aaj Tak clips after every 15 mins
the movie sucked!!!totally…there was no story….1st half 2nd half u really dint know ki after all dikha kya rahe hai!…was it the monkey man tale?..ramayna starting off at any time…or was it abhi and sonam’s luv story??…the last part of the story wen abhi was “dead”-partly….was the only part “watchable”….it u are a totally jobless person…GO WATCH IT!….tha songs were gud…ar rahman’s songs as usual are a masterpiece…!…
dilli 6 just proves that we’re suckers when comes to social satires . I found it, even better than rang de basanti. i just wish that we can sometimes laugh at ourselves. guys it is the golden era of bollywood, so many fresh storytellers, such variety.
agreed that the msg it was trying to convey was a noble one but the way it has been shown!!!!MY GOD!…u barely cud make out wats GOIN ON!
Loved Delhi 6…after Rang De Basanti another awesome movie from Rakeysh Mehra…apt casting..great work by Binod Pradhan, Abhishek is fab and Sonam is a delight on screen.
Loved Dilli-6(Delhi 6) …. awesome it is …. some of the critics here must rethink about their carrer here.
Songs are too good and cinematography is good too. Sonam is the fresh face here and Abhishek did good. Most of the actor did a great job here.
awesome awesome awesome toooooooooo goooooooooood plz plz watch it
Saw it last night. Quite a drab movie. Too flashy, too many characters, multiple topics, no plot. Sudden end with heightened climax. What a mess.
Good acting by stalwarts and newcomers though. Watch other better alternative movie instead.
its a really good movie
the film is actually good..i dunno wat the critics were thinking wen they rated it low..the characters are quite well-sketched & enacted..the concept is amazing..the fact that someone was bold enough to show indian audiences exactly the truth of indian society is something that deserves an applause…i agree there were some drag scenes in the film but overall it was pieced quite well keeping in mind the complex plots n sub-plots..its cinema worth watching in my opinion!
