Delhi and the Madrasi Cowboy

Day 3

Quick Gun Murugan
Life’s gone on overload. The cowboy is walking all over town.
I’ve been huddling in the labs doing test prints.
This far I love the Hindi print; it’s dark and colorful. and we have gone to town with little add-ons; the writer arshad kazi and i had this enlightening experience of matching lipsync and writing the lines. How nice it was to see it on the big screen. except for a couple of places the sync is pretty much bang on and so is the film humour. lets call it more vernac : )
The English-Tamil original made most people happier but we have some strange soft spots that need to be fixed.
the Tamil one seems to have gone down well.
These three versions launch on August 28. the Telugu happens a month later.
Meanwhile, the cowboy is roaming around supervising the world’s longest dosa and stating that Om Shanti Om was designed to be an advertising for him. : ) That brought the house down at the press conference.
I am still fussing over not enough people knowing the film is out next week, but this must be classic director insecurity and dissatisfaction. Tomorrow the cowboy hits the North belt.
Now that will be interesting….
Day 5
We’re off to Delhi, Quick Gun and I.
Rajendra Prasad is creaming the press. The film is slowly seeming to sit up and be taken notice of.
I wanted to do some oddball stunts like spot the cowboy contest on radio. where a cowboy “eats, shoots and leaves” a cinema hall. At interval in any hall and any film, a cowboy shoots, runs across the screen, bites into a dosa, and exits. Let’s see if Fox Star likes it.
I am attaching some ringtones for critical appraisal and sharing. See if you guys like any.
The Tamil test print is getting good feedback. So I am hopeful.
The music seems to be doing ok.
Someone asked me what I was doing next and I had no answer. I was astonished. I racked my brains because I distinctly remember having specific plans for the coming months – a writing assignment and a film. But now, it’s a blank.
Blame it on the cowboy, I guess. Once, 14 years ago, my friend Minty Tejpal had said, “Quick Gun is the millstone around your neck.” I guess he is prophetic.
Yesterday got a strange call. Lalitha Gopalan teaches film in Austin and writes books on films. I don’t know her, but she saw a Quick Gun cutout and impulsively called asking for her own personal copy to keep at home in the US. She said nice things like, “Haven’t seen anything like it.” When I gently tried to point out that it’s 7 feet tall, she was undeterred.
I am trying to get her one. How she’ll cart it to the US, I don’t know.
But it felt damn good.
I am off to the loo now. And then, Delhi.

Sire, what do you say about the Sony blunder of not crediting the music directors and lyricists? Clear it up, I say! Even your current poster says Daniel George is the composer.
sooper ring tones I say!
Music & film will rock boss. We just got our hands on it types.
Wah!wah ! romba nalla irruku ( bahut accha hai ).
the phone seems to be the underlying theme/common thing between all these ring tones.Rooting for the movie, should hopefully rock.
Can we really get those cutouts? How about getting one in India?

It’d been great had it released on Madras Day (Aug 22)
Hi Shashank,
Have been a great fan since Waisa Bhi Hota Hai – II
It’s my most fav Hindi movie ever.
Have been waiting like crazy for your next outing.
Waited endlessly for The Supari Killers. Hope it does materialize.
Will definitely catch QGM first day first show.
All the best. It will definitely be a huge hit.
Yes, thanks to the dosa, the world is aware of QGM. I can see posters in Mumbai.
I heard Mr Prasad speak on TV. Dont think this fella is aware that the character is a spoof! He he he!
However, I dont see my colleagues going gaga or being aware that the film is releasing this friday. It will have to go the word-of-mouth route, like it did for Jhankaar Beats. Somehow the film has to reach colleges and pronto.
Checked the official website of the movie. It’s good fun!! I know I’m going to enjoy this one. Here’s wishing you all the very best….
“Meanwhile, the cowboy is roaming around supervising the world’s longest dosa and stating that Om Shanti Om was designed to be an advertising for him. : ) That brought the house down at the press conference”. SUPREMELY funny!! Thanks for the early morning laughs!!
You have a way with words – or rather, minimalism in your writing. Perhaps QG is a bit of an alter-ego? I can totally imagine you saying ‘Mind it!’ when a car cuts yours off on the road!
Anyway, I saw the film at IFFLA and loved it! Can’t say it would typically be my kind of film, truly I was a bit lost with a couple of the references – which I always hate to admit! – but the humor cut through it all and the film rocks!
All the very best to the King of all Machchans. MURUGAN
“Next time, put less coconut in payasam”. awesome awesome awesome chumbawamba rolla rocka villains dying bullets flying mothers crying sooper!!! Shoots you through the eye and comes out of your sensibilities.
Music rocks. Tickets booked for Saturday 10 AM.
Bhid me shakahari
Karta hoon maramari
lag gayi yaaron…..
ROFL.
Shashank,
I just saw the movie in Fun Cinemas Chembur. Though I did find some bits funny – I didn’t like the movie. You could have really let yourself go wild and not tried to make a safe movie. This is my personal opinion, of course. But I must point out to you that all through the film the focus disappears from some shots like Cafe Madras Idlis from my plate. The sound is very patchy – one can hear the dialogues but suddenly one word will be heard in super surround sound and the next word will be flat – coming from the screen speaker. The sync keeps going off too. You need to check your prints boss. It is criminal to pay for expensive tickets and have a bad print screened.
People were laughing (strong Tamil lobby here in Chembur), but perhaps it just didn’t work for some of us. Too violent (no need to show the close-ups of knives being thrust and bullet holes ad nauseum – it’s a funny movie, not a sunny deol film – some things could have been left unstated), too dheela at the same time, and just too self-conscious to be 100% entertaining.
I also saw the movie – for me it’s a paisa vasool…… A feel good 1..
Go watch the film I say..
When will this be released in the US?
