Dev.D Music Album Soundtrack and Review
04 November 2008
Late afternoon in Bangalore. Cloudy outside. The world has just woken up to the sound of ‘Emosanal Atyachar’ and the buzz can’t get any bigger with Pintoo Meena from Sikar, Rajasthan, Animesh Pandey from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh and R.V. Natarajan from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu all resorting to incessant, tax-free use of the phrase, on/in reference to all forms of humanity surrounding them – parents, girlfriends, relatives, nobodies, random passers-by/passer-byes/passers-byes on the street, the random guy at the cyber caf'©, the sexy elder sister of the kitaabi keeda in class, bade papaji, college warden, and the friendly neighborhood paanwaala.
EA, as analysts on NDTV Profit suggest, will soon replace all other similar sounding EA’s. Jeeye to jeeye kaise soon to be replaced by EA to EA kaise, all cool kids in college highly suspected of using EA to maximum benefit, the focus to soon shift from B.Com, B.A., B. Sc. To E.A.
While still looking for a real good and solid emotional reason to react to this hooplahoo, I went errm errm, and as if God was listening to these inanities, I got a sudden incidence of a late cloudy after noon heartbreak, the kinds that often comes with a minimum 2 hr playlist of dil-toota-mera-tumhara-kya-gaya kind of songs. And Bingo! I went with reinforced vengeance and scribbled the following..
Love ke fundey tootey andey
Dil ki boli tu na boli
Dil ka kachra aake pasraa
Life ka ho gaya pre-mortal post mortem
Dil bola to tha
But you were talking on another line
Even I wanted to talk
but talk time ho gaya tha khatam.
Life ki ye mystery
Thoda humour thodi history..
Now, some 54 days hence, the Emotional Atyachar Syndrome has become quite a pop culture favorite, a kind of Bandwagon Effect, or dare I say counter-culture-syndrome turned pop. A favorite office cafeteria conversation might see a random and unrelated showering of E.A.’s. And then comes the occasional bout of geekness personified, “hey dude, you heard about this supercool track from this cool new film that’s comin’ up?”
“dude it totally rocks, you know when is the music gonna be out?”.
So ya, I guess the time has come to unleash the tiger finally and undergo many such more atyachars, if that’s what destiny has in store.

Aankh Micholi
Amit Trivedi
Fast paced, electronic, remix kinda sound. A not so regular voice. Kind of distracting, but works very soon and the track takes its own course.
Ye kaisi kaisi aankh micholi khele zindagi
Kabhi door kabhi paas aaye
Kabhi yun hi muskuraaye
Kabhi aaye jaaye
The vocals move to a more grungy feel, and we hear more of electronica, bells and stuff.
Kaise kaise rulaaye zindagi
Aise aise nachaaye zindagi
This is one of those lazy not-wanting-to-sing vocals song that appeal to you of you have some or the other reason to crib just about anything in the world.
Dev Chanda – Themes 1
A lovely bass opens the track, a twinkle twinkle little star sort of world in the sounds, a quickly addictive dreamy pa-pa-pa-paraa routine suggests sarcasm, or that’s what I would like to imagine right now. Love the fact that the track keeps you guessing and craving, love the flute running close to the finale.
Dev Chanda – Themes 2
Some piano this time around to add to that lullaby theme, soon you hear a cool latenight whistle, mystery. Makes you run to the street when there is no one around but the streetlamps and dogs. This piece gives the first signs of evolution for the composer.

Dhol Yaara Dhol
Shilpa Rao, Kshitij
Now this is what I am talking about! An Anurag Kashyap film is the last resort you would imagine for this kind of a song. Love duet, they call it. I am sure AK will call it ‘love do it’. Very approachable song, Kshitij sounds like Kailash Kher but has his moments, Shilpa Rao rocks with her husky toned voice.
The reverbs of Dhol yaara dhol stamp the much needed romantic mood. There is a strong female presence in the song, as I might imagine in the film too. There is an expression of love and its bounce back, but there is also so many different moods- the whole desert feel, longing, milna bicchhadna, raanjhana(what a fun twist in the stanza, AT you rock, check out the tori sang tori sang bit) the stanza almost fully done by Shilpa bears an addictive sufi groove, tu sang to baat ban jaaye…
Then it’s back to the daphli sound, reverbs, echoes, pyaar ke vaade, janmo ka bandhan…
I would like to revisit this number and revisit this number and revisit this number…
Dil Mein Jaagi
Mani
A jazzy riff (something that takes you to those B&W Charlie Chaplin days), AT rocks at the keys, and what vocals, what a mukhda structure, its well beyond ‘ek lau’. I would say complex, for lack of a simpler word. There is an interesting beat here that sums up the mood and brings all the notes together. But the vocals (Mani), delightfully mischievous, challenge the whole thing again and ‘spread’ the song, beautifully uneven and stranded and flourishing in so many planes of discovery…
Dil mein jaage armaan aise
Kho jaaoon khwabon mein
Neela ambar halke baadal
Bhar loon main aanchal mein
Saanso mein sargam gaaye
Haule haule kuchh keh jaaye
Dhuaan dhuaan hai ye samaa
Lagta hai saara jahaan hai mera
I haven’t heard a better sparse orchestrated piano track (leaving Rahman aside) in recent times, the last similar thing I heard was may be in the Khoya Khoya Chand album.
But somehow, the song fails to work on its positives and rise beyond the first stanza. I was not too impressed with the finale.

Duniya
Amit Trivedi
Amitabh words this one beautifully, and keeps it hilariously real, AT knows his range, though the beginning may make you utter ‘chakkar ghumyo’ he quickly moves to a kickass electric backing, and resorts to a fun pop electronic studio mood. Nothing great on the percussion side, it’s a simple sounding drums with no major effects, but I guess the intention is just that.
I had to bite my own words when I reached the second half of the song, the same ordinary sounding drum caught me unawares when the beats that follow AT’s ‘chhee cheee chhee chhee’ bit, nicely done. I could have without the cheesy bird sound though, the harmonium is always welcome but yes more was needed.
Again the song remains a light pop effort at best, it remains to be seen if it rises above the effect it creates on the first hearing, and film will definitely be something to look out for. Have you shot all them songs?
Ek Hulchul Si
Joi Barua
Enough of electronica, we are back to some good old electric guitar and a pacy husky male vocal track.
Dhadkan maheen dil mein jagaati ek hulchul si
Kohra hataake sooraj jalaati ek hulchul si
Zinda hai ek hulchul si
Had nazar ki
Jahaan talaq hai
Ek bharam hai
Wo jo dhanak hai
Sach hai sach hai sach hai
This one mostly relies on the poetry than the music, and rightly so. You won’t mind it…and you will only be rewarded when the ‘mehfuuz karle’ umtempo comes, it’s a typical college rock crescendo, with applause and backings and all. Joi Barua is at total ease with the format, and is just the right accompaniment for the supercool leads towards the end(mazaa le jala ley dil mein..)
Emosanal Attyachaar – Brass Band Version
The break up song of the year, of the decade, of the century. I don’t know. Have a break up, listen up, and decide. Who am I to tell you that this song rocks. Take them tattered old shirts out, put on your graceful chappals and hit the ugly city streets with vengeance. Have a fucking wedding ceremony if you can’t play it elsewhere, pull your hair, grow them and pull if you can’t afford given the current situation.
Ye dil pighlaake saaz banaaloon
Dhadkan ko aawaaz banaaloon
Smoking smoking nikle re dhuaan
Seene mein jalti hai armano ki arthi
Arey what to tell you darling kya hua
Arey sapne dekhe jannat ke par mitti mein jaayein
Phoonke re ghar baar ki duniya ko bole good bye
Chhad jaaye haye allah
Jisko bhi ye bukhaar
Tauba tera jalwa…
Tauba tera pyaar
Tera EMOSANAL ATYACHAAR.
Thanks for releasing this before all them boring new year bashes, now it will be some fun. (The perverted mind smiles. )
Ho gayi dil ke paar…tregidee tregidee
Lut gayi re bahaar
Gul sookh sookh murjhaayein
Bol bol why did you ditch me
Zindagi bhi le le yaar kill me….w**%e(did they actually say that?!..WOW! jeeyo ustaad)
Jao piya jao piya….
Fuck meter
Tauba tera jalwa….
Back to the brass.
Peace.
Break up.
Now.
If you haven’t till now.

Emosanal Attyachaar – Rock Version
Wow. Bony Chakravorthy is back. Love his Tamas from Paanch.
Bring on the guitars Bony.
Begins like any band warming up, sound check and stuff.
Then let’s get to the vocals.
Take it over, Bony.
Barpa jo ek shor hai
Pukhta hai purzor hai
Ag rag jalte iske sarmaaye
Kal mera bebaak tha
Aaj magar kamzor hai
Khud se aankhein hi na mil paayein
Aankhon ke aage jo hai
Manzar laava barsaaye
Jalta hai dil jalta hai
Til til main jalta hoon
Is lamhe ki haqeequat
Gawaara na kar paaye
Jalta hai dil.
What follows this here on is INSANITY.
At times I thought which one is more difficult vocals – main khuda from Paanch or this one. But let’s keep that on hold as of now.
And if you thought the insanity would peak on an EA mukhda, think again. AT knows his rock
Aankhon ka hai dhokha
Aisa tera pyaar
Tera EMOTIONAL ATYACHAAR.
CUT TO
INSANITY AGAIN
Aankhon ka hai dhokha…
And thanks for saying that B word at the end. Touch ho gaya by god.
Hikknaal
Labh Jajua
OK. Enough of the aggression. Let’s get on to some good old Punjabi daaru. I will spare you the intellectual atyachar here. Enjoy the track.
Mahi Mennu – Sad Version
The sad version hits you first. Good enough. No one’s complaining.
There is nothing like a Mirza or any traditional Punjabi-sufi potery to elevate the emotion of longing and regret in love. And this song establishes just that. Though the lyrics are new, the emotion remains the same.
Mahi Mennu
Fun Punju track. Comes with a wicked groove with a dhol. Not a conventional party format, but this one says
Maahi mainnu nahi karnna pyaar
Don’t fall in love, baby.
Nayan Tarse
The song starts with some muffled songs, the leftovers of an epic film OST, and a random distortion somewhere, then comes a lazy beat and AT’s crooning to glory.
Nayan tarse
Love the way he stretches ‘naaayyyaan’.
The words are pure hindi poetry, only you don’t get the conventional treatment thanks to the crazy team at work here. I would love to read the actual words on this word as I couldn’t make out much from the rendition on the track. This is a hook that people will love to croon on way to work, or the way back home, or anywhere.
Good track nonetheless, more of an aftermath things are over song, it depicts or paints a stage where nothing is left to be desired. An emptiness that is ably executed by AT.
Gaali si laage malhaar
Saawan barse
Barse re
Bisar gaye bisar gaye
Paayaliya
A sachharine voice(Shruthi Pathak – lyrics too?!) starts off the very different(in the album) song with a great classical ambience, only to be mixed with some fun treatment a little later(my god!)
But that doesn’t take away anything from the great classical ambience established in the initial seconds. And that’s the beauty of fusion, and AT knows it.
The song is bound to find more takers than the other songs for its placing, its sound, its delightfully sparse sound, and not to mention the wonderfully refreshing singing.
So much mixing, and all so masterfully done, does not take the essence(purity) of the song away. I would love to find out how long did it take to put this song together.
So many influences, western , Indian, classical, Rahman, and opera too!
I didn’t wanna say this but this is the first song that reminded me of Devdas. This song is so Paro. He everlasting craving, her divine love, her personal conflicts, ityaadi ityaadi. I am sure all of them are gonna get ‘royally’ treated in this one.
Pardesi
Toshi
A rustic song, the vocals reminded me of Raja Hassan from a TV talent show. Another ‘I am screwed’ song, but I am biased for its Rajasthani/Haryanvi leanings.
O pardesi
Meetha sa chadhaa hai bukhaar
Raam ji karo beda paar
Waqt ne kar daala bantaadhaar
Ib kai howega rey agge yaar
Man baawli baawli buchh sa laagey
Kabhi itt doley kabhi utt bhaagey
There are lots of interesting things going on in this and other tracks in the album, but I guess its better to give few more days than to instantly judge each track on meters of good/bad. All I can say is it’s a very approachable album if nothing else.
Ranjhana
Another lovely rendition by Shilpa Rao, more of a reprise. I can’t have enough of this rustic a very west-Indian treatment(chokhi, dhola) of an east-Indian classic. Let’s see what happens in the film though.
Birha ki agni mein chokhi jalaayi…
Saali Khushi
A depression song. As if you couldn’t guess.
I have a suspicion Amit keeps the best vocal potential songs for himself. Or may be it’s the way he sings them, or makes them sound. It’s hard out there for you if you are trying to answer these doubts.
Jalte halte raakh jaisi hui hai saari
Khaak jaisi bewajah si umr saari
Kahaan chali gayi hai saali khushi
Jalti aahein hai saans bhi jail hui
Dhoondhoo kaise hai aas bhi, jali hui
The mood is mostly gloomy until a ‘inteha ho gayi’ kind of transition happens towards the middle, with ample sax and claps, and chorus to make it a fulfilling, haunting sound, only to end it on the initial gloomy note and the saali khushi teri maa ki mood.
Yahi Meri Zindagi
Aditi Singh Sharma
This song brings the score a full circle, birds chirping, a stagey-eloquence, a very western treatment to the symphony, the vocals too complement the setting.
These are the moments grungy cinema finds its footing, innocence. No grungy film worth its salt has made it without such moments of virgin innocence, and looks like Dev D will tread this path too.
I felt the interludes very old-Vishal, very atmospheric and staged. Quite good.
A good breezy song, even if you don’t get all the bloody connections right.
Rock ‘n roll, cinema!

Bravo my dear friend Bravo! That was some hard work in the time that was given to you by the powers to be!
Just waiting to get out of office to listen!
loading...
Mesmerized!! Will post later on what each rock/electronica song reminds me of, at the moment it’s just EMOTIONAL ATYAACHAAR!!!
loading...
Thanks guys.
@ravptor, it was more Passione than anything else man.
@Tejas, play on!
loading...
Thnx for this Tushar..
i see another month long loop :-)
loading...
sure dude. these are the days we later look back at and cherish in cocktail parties. :-)
loading...
This is sooo fucking damn addictive..i am telling ya…emosional aatyachaar..has sooo much crudeness and crass..the vocals..the lyrics..it is unfucking believable..i love it…as you have said it tushy.. THE BREAK UP SONG OF EVER…its like celebating break-up and being happy over it..rather than mourning…this dev..is gonna be so freaking different…ufffff..need to stop gushing…
loading...
EMOTIONAL ATYACHAR!!!!!!!!!
literlly!
This year we had 3 great OST. The new wave of Music Directors are rocking.
loading...
NAAAYAN TARASE…..GEEEZUS…what a track…amit trivedi zindabad
pucca dope song…after a long time..we are getting a dope song in hindi music…i need some grasss..like right now
loading...
Just once again wanted to say…motherfucking awesome!!!!
loading...
Dude… the music is so so so damm good. I can’t believe I did not pester you to give me ur ipod at iffla to hear the brass again!
Kya baat hai sir, Nyaan Tarse… coll dope jam session. Pardesi – I am just smiling at the simplicity of the song.
By god, kush hogaya sirjee!
loading...
I meant I did not pester anurag at IFFLA ;-)
He had he tracks but we were all so damm drunk to listen properly!!!
loading...
nayan tarse jacked me off… i’m blown away by its uniqueness where nothing
isseems to be in sync and yet everything falls in placePaayalia… loved it and Geeta Dutt’s singing comes to mind… not sure why but Paayalia took me back to Geeta Dutt’s sweet style of singing… with those rap/hiphop beats
Saali Khushi is a perfect depressant companion (those senti alcoholic moods)
don’t like Emosonal Atyachar – BrassBand too gimmicky for me. The Rock version is cool. Just isn’t settling in for me. Well wtf.
oh and yahi meri zindagi is another live-forever-zindagi-song to be added to that eternal zindagi-songs playlist
Still listening… darn it has 18 SONGS!!!
loading...
Just wondering… has anyone yet listened to “Duniya” sung by Amit Trivedi? It is going to play in every autorickshaw after Emosonal Atyachar
The visuals I see in my head to “Aankh Micholi” is a chase thriller…
loading...
Yeah Oz. But I have a sad feeling that lot of people will just pass this soundtrack because well..it’s just too different! At least that happened with Aamir OST. Whenever I recommended that to anyone, people liked only one song and came back saying I loved it because I have very ‘English’ taste in music. :(
And Paayaliya goes in our list of terrific female sung toxic songs! After Dominique Cerejo I want to marry Shruti Pathak now. :D
loading...
Did I hear anyone say Dope? Bad boiz he he.
Now that the initial adrenaline has settled, I have started the playlist, this will go on now all day. Loved Dhol Yaara Dhol. But the challenge here is going to the latter songs, the ones that come after EA, cus this is unprecedented no doubt, one needs time and inclination(and dope too, if you are lucky) to do justice to all the songs.
Currently tripping on ” Dil mein Jaage/i”.
loading...
this movie will Unique for sure:)
loading...
The last audio cd I bought was of NO SMOKING. Seems like the next cd that I might buy is that of DEVD. Love the emosional atyachar song, have been listening to it non stop.
loading...
baap music hai bhai…
loading...
Awesome…Superlatives fail me here. Sounds like a distillation of a lifetime of sounds, experiences, atyaachars, redemptions and what have you. On constant loop…Each brilliant in what it set out to achieve and love the assured confidence in the way the music has been approached!
Cudnt stop grinning from ear to ear as each song kept doing its own sweet atyachar on the senses. Bravo…the best heard in a long, long time.
loading...
koi mujhe amit saab ke baare mein kuch aur bata sakta hai
kahan paida hue
kaun si sadak pe chale

If I remember correctly Anurag, you had mentioned Jan 10th as the official launch date of the music. So does it still hold so?
loading...
Anurag..we want an interview with Amit…would love to see the man speak…
loading...
Sethu..it’s the case of demand and supply. lots of enquiries about the album led it.
loading...
It will be very interesting to see how these songs / music work in the movie…
loading...
Ask your questions. I will ask him to answer them.
loading...
A friend plundered his college’s hostel’s network-shared files, in that there was a AR Rehman folder with 3 or 4 songs from Aamir whose ID3 tags too referred to AR Rehman as its music director! :D
loading...
Question: (and I’m no music expert) but it looks like in Nayan Tarase, Amit deliberately tries to go off in voice and sync and still pulls back from going all the way…. why? Of course he’s sung other songs in the album in sur but Nayan Tarase there is this feeling I get he’s trying to rough the edges… or am I talking through my ass… sorry!
loading...
Nayaan Tarse is a trip for me too. But I am getting this whole Jam session feel to it with someone on a bad trip.
A drummer & bassist who have no clue about the song but they are playing a beat.
A lead who is strumming laughing his ass out but playing like a genuis cos his trip involves some maniacal demons that he is trying to overcome.
And the singer, the singer is just barely controlling his emotions to get the song going.
Nayaan Tarse, that is what it is for me. Loved the way they cut the repeat to two loops… it just stops like there was no need to go on. Fall asleep.
Man, this soundtrack is a revelation.
loading...
reached nayan tarse, and absolutely loving this soundtrack. some very brilliant moments, but the overall collage it puts together is awesome.
when is the cd out? will buy it as soon as out.
oye lucky’s been playing in my car since i bought it, and it’s time for change. some of the best songs post jugni and superchor this yr – congrats amit, anurag and team – this film is all set to rock!

oh darn, i just realized these are in alphabetical order, i was so getting used to hearing them in this order (the songs’ve been playing on loop since mornin), I would have been a bit weirded out on hearing the actual order on the cd.
Anurag – what’s the real order of the songs on the cd? Yahi Meri Zindagi is so the perfect closer. Darn!
loading...
Great post, Tushar. Seems you spend quite some time on it.
Loved Dhol Yaara Dhol and Paayaliya. These two will play on the airwaves over and over again.
EA-the brass band version will be a hit on the dance floor. The 60’s twist will make a come back. I suppose the remix version will follow.
Duniya sounds like a song which’ll play in the backgound at times.
Still listening…all over again.
When is the CD releasing? I’m driving out of town this weekend and wish I had the CD to listen to…again and again!
loading...
As I was reading through the comments (with the soundtrack for Background Music
) the only thought was omg, everyone is saying the same thing! And now that I have heard the songs, couldnt agree more with all the gushing
. The songs here are SERIOUSLY AWESOME!
.
.
Though dint like Payaliya (was reminded of Ankhiyan Chipki from Paanch, which btw I initially HATED to eventually be really hooked onto…) and Mahi Mennu (sad version) and probably that is it. In an album of 18 songs, that, I think is a VERY high success percentage
Absolutely loved both versions of EA, Nayan Tarse, Hikk Naal, Aankh Micholi, Duniya…
All this from hearing on a low quality hardware where I cant make out much of the lyrics…
And oh yes, seriously well written piece Tushar

Arey kab se gaa baja rahe hain amit saab?
Soyaa nahi jaa raha

Kuch back story
What kind of family he belongs to?
Since when is he into music?
Kis tarah ki training li hai music mein, agar li hai toh?
Just want to know more about him
vaise toh ye janam se hi talented lag rahe hain

and I forgot to say that the beginning instrumental part of EA (Rock) is JUST AWESOME (as overused that word is, it is pretty appropriate)… Faintly reminds me of something similar from Kill Bill Vol. 2s BG. Dont know the name, but I think it plays around the point when the Bride’s wedding chapter ends and the new chapter begins. Not too sure though. And I dont mean in a very obvious copied way or anything…

loading...
@Tejas
Haha…i really went all ‘bheem’ brains about him
thanks for the shanti
because the music has basically made me restless
Well don’t need to say that anymore
Was too eager to know if he’s had a very formal formal kind of training,
because i also compose songs vocally
Om ke gaane sune hue the, bas pata nahi tha, par om se toh bahuuut bada leap hai ye album

Nayan Tarse!! fucking awesome track!!!Led Zeppelin meets Kurt Cobain meets Hindustani classical!! Take a bow Amit!!!

Whatever happened to Mithoon?? Amit is best thing to come out in hindi music scene since Mithoon (or some say since AR Rahman and I’d agree). Hope he doesn’t disappear like Mithoon has…
loading...
Most of the songs are copied. wait for the official release will barn amit whatever.. [EDITED]

@ Arun Verma
Mithoon is working on Onir’s remake of Chashme Badoor. From what I read in some newspaper, he’s taking it easy after the music of Aggar tanked sooner than he could say “Maggar..”.
About Amit Trivedi’s Dev D – fantastic. I can’t stop humming Nayan Tarse since the first time I heard it. My favorite of the lot.

“This is a hook that people will love to croon on way to work, or the way back home, or anywhere.” – absolutely true

“This is a hook that people will love to croon on way to work, or the way back home, or anywhere.” – absolutely true :D. Couldnt agree with you more on the rock version of EA – insanity (the latter half of the song reminded me of AC/DC). Ek Hulchul is an absolute little gem, especially towards the concluding portions with the brillian SLASHy type leads. This is such a complex layered album!

@oz:
Dude… Thiruda thiruda… it’s such a wonderful album man… a hundred instruments in one song and none in the next… a song that goes slow and then paces up… Thiruda thiruda was brilliant… i listen to that album like everyday man…

Oh and..
I am a huge huge huge fan boy of Amit Trivedi… his tracks for Om… Junoon (Abhijit Sawant), Aamir and now… goosebumps all over… Dev D…. FIFTEEN TRACKS OF BRILLIANCE MAN…. cant get enough of it… waiting for the CD to hit the shelves… I will personally gift a few of your CDs to my friend so that they know there is someone who is uber talented here… my favourite song from Dev D is Duniya and from Aamir it is Chakkar Ghumiyo… i love the rustic earthy elements in both these tracks…

Here are my thoughts after a first day of a lot of hearing of the soundtrack. I never post reviews of music albums – I listen to so much music, and usually have no time to put my thoughts to pen, so I’m surprised this soundtrack has inspired me to actually write down a few quick words as I hear it again today.
Disclaimer – I’m just listing my uber favourite songs, and the ones that don’t work for me at the same level as the first group, though I’d like to clarify it’s a kickass soundtrack with all songs being really good, fun and enjoyable. It’s just I don’t hear too much hindi music, so although all songs are really good and great by bollywood standards, I find some of them really more up my alley and greater than the others. Just a matter of personal choice.
Also, my thoughts change sometimes radically on repeated listening, so don’t take them too seriously.
Absolute Favourites:
3. Dev Chanda – Theme 2 – although I like the theme 1 also, it’s very dreamy and hummable, this one is way superior – very surreal with some very sad emotional notes encompassed by some genius classical violony feel – also short and sweet. Absolutely magical.
5. Dil Mein Jaagi – love this tune, and the voice. Doesn’t sound original, but I still love the feel of the song – very dreamy – very old Hollywood musical.
6. Duniya – enough has been said about the song I think – ROCKING tune! Awesome singing, love the drum groove! Just my kinda funky drums!
8. Emoshional Atyachaar – enough’s been said about this song. Brilliant lyrics, brilliant music, brilliant singing. The song of the year along with Superchor and Jugani from Oye Lucky.
9. EA – rock version – love this out n out. The madness.
19. Yahi Meri Zindagi – I think I’m biased here since it’s sung by an acquaintance of mine – the song borrows heavily from western structures, almost sounds like a rip-off in the beginning, but I somehow love the singing on this. The structure just rocks and reeks of early morning freshness – like a morning come full circle after a madness of a long night. The come-back song. Aditi has done a fantastic job singing it – the innocence just adds.
13. Nayan Tarse – what an epic Hollywood beginning leading to that fantastic slow groove – one of the best songs of the year! Fooking fantastic laid back groove and singing! The guitars in the chorus – the typical rock energy! N back to the laid back groove. Kudos!

Good songs, but somehow I don’t think they’r too original – either remind me of something else from the west or I think I’ll tire out sooner or later. Good songs nonetheless.
1.Ankh Micholi – very nice beginning to an album, but reminds me too much of the regular paki rock fare. Nice singing no doubt.
4. Dhol yaara dhol – like the song, but it sounds very commonplace – like I’ve heard this earthy rustic ethnic kinda tune too often before. It’s weird – I like it, but I don’t want to. Maybe it’s the voice.
7. Ek hulchul si – like it. can’t put my finger on it, maybe the repeating chorus line, or the use of the guitar – very paki rock. The standout part is the ho ho ho ho stadium sing along chant.
10. Hiknaal – nice Punjabi song! Very well put together. Needs a stronger dhol – the oye lucky remix treatment and it’s gonna be the song of the year on the bollywood dance floors.
11. Mahi menu (sad version) – doesn’t work much for me, like the happy version more
12. Mahi menu (happy version) – nice lil funky song, with some nice instrumentation!
14 Paayalia – nice classical song with groovy fusion happening, just not my kind of song – still a nice song. Like the funky vocal sample having fun, by god.
15. Pardesi – nice song again.
16. Ranjhana – again a great song, but something about it tells me I won’t be hearing it as much soon. Good it’s short and sweet.
17. Saali Khushi – another great tune, but I don’t think it’ll last me a long time. Some nice singing – some really groovy drums. Very trippy.

anurag – can you please let me know the actual order of the songs on the album?
i don’t want to get used to this order (alphabetical) to find the order completely different on the cd later – the order needs to flow.

Emotional atyachar is actually atyachar on musical intelligence…cant bloody figure out which raga ..what sur, experiment ke naam par behudgi shooru hai and this review is actually chamchagiri ka atyachar

@navneet – May be some songs give you that ‘heard before’ feeling, because it’s not new invented music or genres. It’s just that the amalgamation of genres within same songs is new for Hindi film music. When I heard ‘Haara’ from Aamir, it reminded me of a Trent Reznor song (Survivalism) and ‘Ha Raham’ sounded like from Rahman’s factory.
@CC – Do you know what raga, sur it was when Kishore Kumar goes ‘O ghode..sidhe ho ja re’ and gibberish in the middle of ‘Ek Chatur Naar’?

My favorite tracks:
Dhol Yaara Dhol
Duniya
Emosional Atyachar (Rock Version)
Nayan Tarse (don’t like amit’s singing in this song, but still like the song. i dunno know)
Paayliya (best composition of the album)
Pardesi
Raanjhan (i hear this song at least 5 times before playing other songs in the album – it is too short – but quality. i love the way she checks herself with ‘o-hooo-o’ in this song and Dhol Yaara Dhol)
Saali Khushi (singer Amit’s best song of the album )

Favorites are clearly
Nayan Tarse – this amit chap’s treatment is mindblowing. Definitely track of the year.
Yehi meri zindagi
Dev Chanda Theme #2
Dhol yaara dhol
The rest will take time to grow on me. Sitting here in USA I don’t know what hype EA has in India. Aap kehte ho to sach hi hoga.
Overall bahut badiya album. Amit Trivedi, maan gaye yaar. Liked your tunes in Aamir as well. Thank you.

great album..Again Anurag has proved that he remains one of the few directors with an excellant musical sense..Hope that Amit Trivedi will keep on producing music like this..All songs are excellant except Dhol Yaara Dhol which has a heard before feeling as well as resemblence to another MD’s musical style.

Thanks oz & Magik ! Glad you liked it.
Waise aur footage milti to achcha hota. I just saved those 2 DevD clips from youtube, phir usual Windos Movie Maker.
Now I really want to do an edit of Yehi meri zindagi. What a mindblowing album yaar, this one’ll kick ass for the entire 2009, dekhna. Amit must have been on some serious coke to come up with these awesome, awesome tracks
PFC should just get like 1GB worth of free footage from DevD. Then we can all go off & make our fan edits & tributes. That’ll be a lot of fun.

What an album, just loved it. Just purchased the dev d music cd today morning and thats what I had been listening in my car for whole day. Man thats one great album. All the songs in Album rocks.
For a month now I was awaiting the release of this music album as after seeing the promos was totally in love with the super duper hit song Emosanal Atyachaar. The bass band song is total hit and will be one of the best tracks of the year.
But boy after buying the cd, I realized that emosanal atyachaar is indeed not the best track of the album. Now comes the big daddy, the one track which made me come online and write all this about this album is the best track of the album: Atyachaar – Rock Version. And boy can it rock. It rocks big big time. Heard the track once and simple fell in love with it. Its total hardcore rock.

where did u get the cd dude? checked with both landmark and planet m here in blr – they have no clue. I thought the release date for the music was 10th Jan?
loading...
The songs that really have me hooked are
1. Dhol yara Dhol
2. Duniya
3. Emotional Atyachar – Rock Version
4. Hikknaal
5. Paayaliya
and this is purely based on audio with no visuals. Now a lot of times the visuals can really elevate a song to popularity. Lets wait and watch…..but all in all a very rich mixture of sounds, rythm and beats.
Hats off to Amit Trivedi..this is one helluva compilation…but i think he has put all his eggs in one basket…Hopefully he can keep churning them out long after this…..

Damn… i was trying to figure out what tune Aankh Micholi sounded similar to…somehow reminds me of hay re hay tera ghunghta remix meets robert miles….i guess…never mind..maybe??

ajay – again, where did u buy the cd? i went hunting all over town yesterday, it’s not out anywhere.

kickass..!!!!

I am listning these mad mad songs again and again….Intially when i saw dev d promo i just love Emosanal Attyachaar, the word did the magic on me, and i love that patan ke presly idea, i was crazily singing this song everywhere, and most of the people laughed on me, they simply didnt get the song. but these two words hold nuclear bomb in them. it just perfectly express the break up in a daisy and rustic way.
But today i heard Nayan Tarse and I have totally forgotten the Emosanal Attyachaar. this ulbum is really unique, but the song of the album is definetly Nayan Tarse.
It just begins like we are gone get into some suspence english thriller and lyrics starts with total morbidness.
there are few words in a language which makes the impact anyhow, words like sawan, tarse, tapish, dhar, phuhar, chubhan and when u blend it with that kind singing, songs become breathless, you literally feel chock.
It reminded me the kya din kya raat hai song from paach, its creats similar kind of impact.
anurag, I got high expectation from this movie, dont disappoint me ..

great album ! can’t stop hearing the songs.same with my office colleagues. one song that we have been discussing incessantly is the EA rock version and we have been comparing it with the brass band one. things like how it is “emotional” in rock version and “emosanal” in brass band version..and the implications and need for that difference…anyways, a real rock song this one! thanks AT and thanks AK for this one and “khuda” from “paanch”. now just cant wait for Dev D the movie . when is it releasing ?

Just heard the songs only one word awesome man.
Amit has done , music the only reason i can forgive anurag for no smoking.
Hope AK does justice the songs and if movie if is half goos as the soundtrack ,then i guess AK has winner on hands.

Well, by what the pundits have been plausing on the web all over simmering the music scene with Dev Ds colors, it does seem like something promising. I have been able to catch up with EA both versions, and hearing them together actually is making a major impact. When you are done with the crassness of Brass Band version ( which actually isnt that crass given the way the main band beat is thumpin with those brief pauses giving it a Timbaland etc kind feels, which is damn unique on Indian Music scene) and what top say of darlin kya huaaa on the Rock version. It is the rocking song to swear by as we did for last year with Pichhle saat dinon altho very subdued in front of EA, with both the initial strummings and tempo and intensity up part at the end adding the extra effect.
And man, talking of Nayan Tarse Sawan Barse, AT what the heck have you created dude! Its TOTALLY out and out anthemish feel, you are on the brink of split opening the hinglish rock revolution in India (altho no eng lyrics in this i guess, but the music is out and out outrageously retro rock in feel). I dunno how far will this go, the Album part, whether it gets to just people talkin in this forums or whether it actually takes the shape it should develop it into. But thanks for bringing in the fresh feel to the Music scene a treat for hollow conundrums and a whif of livewire for numb deni-zens.
(Rest of the songs am yet to listen)

BTW, any guitarists in here? Ek hulchul is great for jamming with, contrary to what I expected, closely followed by EA(rock version), Nayan Tarse and Saali Khushi. Payaliya has its own fusion fun.

Dev D music is different but being different doesn’t always mean good or interesting
In other word its bullshit specially the song “Emotional Atyachar”
Grow up Mr Kashyap its not creativity its crap
P.S: Please don’t moderate this comment if you believe in freedom of expressions

sorry rahul.. your “creative” atyachar is appreciated..

I thought you would offer me a free Dev D music cd for the best comment :P anyways…thanks for not doing something(moderation)

hey thanks Sharat – I got the cd last weekend though didn’t visit this page here since.

KUDOS mr kashyap for the best indian cd booklet ever. it reminds me of all my chemical brothers’ booklets, no words, just intense psychedelic pictures – well done!
I can finally blast the songs at high fidelity!

Just like the movie, the music score too rocks!! There is so much more to this album than the quirky Emosanal Attyachar. Paayaliya and Dhol yaara dhol these two folkish numbers just grow on you every time you listen to them.
Keep listening……..

And yeah…….Tushar, Nice blog. Shows that you have a refined taste when it comes to music.

It is always nice to get back to the songs after the film and see how they fare, better or worse. Dev D is of course the better case.
@Rahul, Thanks man.

Hi,

Saw the movie last Thursday and also have the soundtrack on my MP3 player. Though I love all the other tracks including EA and Duniya, m kinda addicted to Saali Khushi and Pardesi (keep looping them). I don’t know if it’s the way these 2 tracks were pictured on screen that did the trick for me or The Twilight Players.
I first thought that Delhi 6 would be the soundtrack of the year, but on repeat listening, I think Dev.D deserves that honor.

Excellent music stuff after a long time. kudos to the music director. and you have given an equally creditable review.
