Dev D Nets INR1.5 Crorer On its First Day

Honhaar Goonda

According to Boxoffice report:

Dev D has managed to tot up fair business on its first day in terms of nett business. The seat utilisation is low but it has been released on 500 cinemas which is huge for this type of film and this has enabled to film gross a reasonable 1.45 crore nett on day one.

What was the business like on weekend? Anybody know? Will Dev D be the first hit of year 2009?

I think the business for the weekend will be around 5 crores…which is fantastic..given the budget…and I think it will sustain…so obviously Dev.D is going to be the 2nd Hit of the year…Raaz 2 being the first…

Congrats Anurag, UTV and Dev.D team…

Taran Adarsh is continuing with his efforts of defaming the movie.
In the latest BO update(http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/trade/boxoffice_update/index.html) he says “this week’s DEV D had a 25% – 35% start at select screens, while the opening was much lower at others. The reports are negative and a decline in business was noticed on Day 1 itself. The general feedback is that the film is not likely to sustain.”

This completely contradicts the boxofficeindia report(http://boxofficeindia.com/npages.php?page=shownews&articleid=781&nCat=news)

On first day there was some problem with multiplexes so the adverstisemsnts for the film could not release. I watched the evening show in a Delhi multiplex and to my surprise it was 3/4th full which is amazing for such a movie on Friday. In Delhi I can say the film is doing very well according to booking reports on bookmyshow.com
I am glad for Anurag and UTV.

Taran seems to be playing really dirty. I don’t know if anybody’s noticed, he’s trying to get back at Anurag even when he’s reviewing movies that have nothing to do with Anurag. Sample this as he reviews a movie called “Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye” which released along with Dev D this friday:

“Worse, Raima’s fantasy [Randeep in various avtaars] only makes you rub your eyes in disbelief. Actually, you went through similar emotions [upset, angry, disgusted] while watching Anurag Kashyap’s nonsensical NO SMOKING”

He’s obviously not over the verbal whipping he recieved over his review of No Smoking. Taking shots at Anurag like this clearly indicates that he’s trying to get people to avoid anything made by Anurag.

In Bangalore at INOX@Jaynagar it was housefull all the show on Saturday & Sunday. I took 4 tickets for Sunday 4-7 show. I was in need to cancel 2 tickets later and found lot of people at showtime were interested to take tickets from me. The movie was really good and personally I think the turning point for Dev life was the time he narroly escaped from car while taking coins and realized how much precious is life. I really like the way changes came in Dev and showing that young generation has courage to accept the future life in own way with accepting Chanda and that was the most important scene liked by my wife.

It could have get more audience to view if some accomodation can be done for making language better. I think Anurag could have compromise on this.

I am sure it will be big hit for this year.

It was a pretty easy prediction. I played safe by saying 5 crores :P I mean 1.45 crores on Friday…so the minimum will be 4.5 crores for sure…and normally Sat and Sun rakes more money than Fri…so 5 is a pretty safe bet ;)

    @SatyaVrat,

Luck By Chance is sold at a pretty high rate to Big Pictures who are distributing it. So, unless the movie really picks up @ 2nd week, its a losing proposition. Though personally I think its a fantastic movie.

I have added marketing, interest rate amount on 5.5 crore and obviously some other cost which will make it to 7-8 crore.

But anyway I am sure it may end up with 20-25 crore considering you have limited the audience with the language used in movie (of course 2 from my family did not see).

Another thing I am not sure if in Bangalore INOX & PVR will continue after thursday as week end gives best business because of IT professionals.

Once again congratulation for making wonderful movie and made my & wife mind to watch movie after 5 year as we were too busy in writing books. Sometimes I thought I will invest in your movies once I will be having my own IT company successful. I guess you may recognize me :) . But I think now you will get investors easily and best thing for our cinema that more directors will be tempted to follow your way (May be for making money only).

Very happy for Anurag with the success route that Dev.D has taken. There may be 5 Taran Adarsh or Komal Nahatas bringing his film down but there is another section of the media comprising of younger guys who are supporting the kind of films Anurag or UTV makes and that in my regard is also a good sign.

The breakdown was 1.40 crore on Friday, 1.75 crore on Saturday and 2.25 crore on Sunday which shows collections did not decline on day one as suggested by some sources. The first week should finish around the 7.50 crore nett mark which would be a decent result for the film.

@ Honhaar Goonda, I know its Net collections.

If I understand the economics correctly, whatever you earn as Net collections, 55% is returned to the production house. The rest stays with the distributor. Unless of course the production house themselves distributed the film (like Yashraj does). So, if UTV themselves have distributed the film, so far they have earned only 5.5 crores. This doesn’t make the movie profitable yet.

So, Dev.D is still not in profit. But will be by the next weekend.

  36. Aniruddha Aniruddha says:

A film’s Hit or Flop is determined by how much the distribution company makes and not by how much the production house make.

That is why Luck By Chance is a losing proposition coz’ Excel sold LBC at a pretty high price to Big Pictures thereby making good money. But, Big Pictures now need to recover it. Had Excel themselves distributed it, LBC by now would have been Above Avg. if not a Hit.

And that is also why Rab Ne is such a massive Blockbuster coz’ Yash Raj are both Producers and Distribtors. So, they got way more profit than they would have had they distributed it through any other distribution house.

@ Honhaar Goonda, I never studied Eco in my lyf :D

The little that I know about distribution is through the websites and the collections that I track.

Net doesn’t mean profit. Its like this. (I hope I am correct. UTV, please correct me if I am not).

First we have the Gross collections. 60% of the collections is termed as Net Collection which is given to the Distribution house. The rest 40% is received by the Theater owners or Exhibitors as we call them.

Now, from this Net collection 55% is given to the Production House and the rest is kept by the Distribution House (if the Production and Distribution house are different.) Incase the same company Produces and Distributes, the entire Net collection is their earning.

    This is how it works.

So, incase of Dev.D, the Gross collection is 9.5 crores. Which makes the Net collection to be 5.5 crores and the rest 4 crores goes to the Exhibitors/Theater owners.

So, UTV takes home 5.5 crores as of now.

You know we actually do not have any website which provides the details of Hindi movies. However, boxofficeindia.com and ibosnetwork.com are two websites where you can get a lot of information about the collections.

I remember when I was in Kolkata, I used to go to this theater which was next to our house and see the Trade Report Journals where they enlist every single collection from every single theater. It used to be really awesome. Offcourse there were no multiplexes then. All single screens. But, these Trade Journal aren’t accessible to common people :(

For English movies (US I mean) however there are a couple of websites where you can find every single details about the released films.

    boxofficemojo.com and the-numbers.com

Coming back to your point that movies doesn’t released in UK and US, I think it was a deliberate decision taken by UTV to curb the piracy. Dev.D is am offbeat movie. If the pirated copy of the movie is released the next day on the internet. Half of India and abroad won’t show up to see the movie. It will be really tuff to get any returns then. And you know what their decision worked big time. Not a single copy of Dev.D is available online and the movie is a Hit.

Am tired of googling ‘DevD torrent’ for the last three days…and guess what, numerous blogs have actually posted “DevD movie links” with a note that the movie is being uploaded and the links would appear in a few hours…though am sure that no one has a pirated copy yet ..(..unfortunately, for people like me!).

Honhaar Goonda, I know why UTV released the movie in only US…Coz’ Abhay came to US…He only brought the prints along with him…Total 4 prints came to US…Abhay brought them…2 in each suitcase/bag.

Abhi plane mein rule hai…you cannot carry more than 2 bags…So he couldn’t bring more than 4 prints.

Had Abhay been to UK, you guys would have those 4 prints.

    Nice theory na? ;) :P :D :P

Anurag: Great film. I am happy that it is doing well..happy for you and your cast and crew. And it is quite unbeilievable that the production cost is only 5.5 crores; amazing that you have been able to achieve such technical finesse in the sound, the editing, the visuals and the locales and in such a modest budget!

Two sources looking at (hopefully) the same figures can have such differing conclusions. Sach mein, saala is duniya mein ‘fact’ naam ki koi cheez hai hi nahin.

“The film has had a fair weekend at a handful of multiplexes. Most major players [multiplexes] this writer (Taran Adarsh) spoke to have confirmed that the film has had a decent weekend at very, very few plexes, at very few big centres only. The youth in Mumbai and Delhi mainly have liked the film, but the numbers are clearly missing. Monday witnessed a big fall even at those plexes. Overall, disappointing!” (http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/trade/top5/index.html)

“Dev D has managed reasonable business of nearly 5.50 crore nett over the weekend. The film managed to do its best business at select multiplexes of Mumbai and Delhi/NCR. The business is fair as costs are low and the film has a limited audience. … The breakdown was 1.40 crore on Friday, 1.75 crore on Saturday and 2.25 crore on Sunday which shows collections did not decline on day one as suggested by some sources. The first week should finish around the 7.50 crore nett mark which would be a decent result for the film.” (http://www.boxofficeindia.com/npages.php?page=shownews&articleid=786&nCat=news)
