Dev D : Reprise, lyrical interpretation
Tushar | Movies | December 31, 2008 at 11:10 am
It has been 2 days since the songs of Dev D ‘hit us’, and there is no better way to describe the effect. Normally I write music reviews and the hysteria looms for some time, I get panned for wrongly interpreting many things and get lauded for getting few things right, sometimes I fight, sometimes I feel too lazy or simply incapable of facing all the questions thrown at me. And soon it gets over.
Dev D is different. The response is mind numbing, the music is not yet out officially and still the whole nation is going ga-ga. The kind of enthusiasm and excitement shown by every music lover in the endless comments and elsewhere is unprecedented. And this shows that it is no fluke, or a one week wonder. These songs will grow, and grow more.
There are so many questions that everyone has, may be we soon get Amit Trivedi on board and answer some of these questions and share some more of his thoughts. I was thinking of a way to assimilate the collective responses and somehow share the things that went into all our heads when we heard these songs. Then I simply retired in my space and did something I used to do a lot earlier, write my random thoughts down, can’t dare to call it poetry.
So here it is, my little new year gift for everyone at PFC and everyone who could relate to the songs of Dev D.
(This is no music review and contains highly incorrect word structure at more places than one.)
O Pardesi
You didn’t even look back once
I saw you cross the entire street
And fading away with the fading lights
As the street moved on
And someone shouted at my back
Yes I am a hopeless romantic alright
I will still hold on to that title for years to come
Actually I like it that way I think
The whole depression thing
It suits me fine
The whole beard and dirty jeans thing
It is such mortals who make up for all the good in the world
So many bright lights
So many hopeful eyes
So many smiling faces
Doesn’t it get monotonous?
Ishaq mushaq na chhupey baawle yaar
Dil ki takhti pe naam likha tera Laila
I am fond of signboards
Quaatil aankhon pe saje zulf ka pehra
The killer disguised in the veil of poise
Raanjhana
Now that it’s all over
I look at the possibilities
And the impossibilities
The pyre of dreams
Burns away slowly
As I gather dust from the past
That we never had
Mahi mennu nahi karna pyaar
I don’t want these niceties
I am happy the way I am
Have your fun, and the drinks too
Time for some cynical revelations and confessions truckaan style.
Too bad I was stuck all this while, but to err is human.
Can’t be too bad forever.
Dil mein jaagi
Gallop gallop gallop
Let’s make it all grayscale
And let’s shift the curtain a bit to the left
Let’s show a blue sky against the grayscale
Think of a world which works against all odds, just to please you
And listen to this key now, the lower one
And sing the best that you can
I can see an early morning foggy street
Where you still need to keep the lights on
Its fun, when the light pierces the fog
And slowly sways a cycle, sway to the left, sway to the right
Let’s not wake the neighbors yet, and keep it low
I will tell you when its time
Let’s call up a random number and say sorry
Dev Chanda Themes
Slow jazz
The way it should be
Ek Hulchul si
Looking at the bus that passed me by
On the highway
I went back to the times that never were
Things that never happened
Look at that, in the bus
Is it you
The world is a beautiful lie
Ain’t it so beautiful?
And soon you are inducted in the fun
Join the ride, sing along
Do the backing, ek hulchul si bits
Zinda hai ek hulchul si
Had nazar ki, jahaan talaq hai
Ek bharam hai
Wo jo dhanak hai
Sach hai, sach hai, sach hai
Jeene ki ek talab phir jagaaye
Bujhti si saanson ko kash banaaye
Ek hulchul si
Mehfuz karley
Ya dil ye pal
Saanson se chhoo le
Lamha ye bekal
Bekal bekal bekal
And clap everyone!
Kar le kar le ab kuchh aisa kar le
Tu aaj angina roshan kirno se tan man bhar ley
Majaa le jalaa le dil mein
And over to the leads!
Have fun.
What a beautiful lie.
(Lovely repeat song, for the highway
Mellow at first, slowly it introduces itself)
Duniya
Let’s get cynical
Let’s crib let’s shout
Haaye duniya
Ye duniya badi gol hai
Haaye duniya
Hain ismein kitne jhol
Rock rock rock
Pal mein chhoda pal mein phaansa
What a fucked up world
What to do
Look at me, now look at you, now look at the world
Fun, ain’t it?
Aankh micholi
Finish your drink, let’s get outside
Put on your shades, let’s get outside
Kabhi door kabhi paas aaye
Kabhi yun hi muskuraaye
Kabhi aaye jaaye aaye jaaye aisi zindagi
Don’t smoke here, imagine that you have just had a smoke
I have seen that guy before, I guess he used to hang around the poolhall last year
Kaise kaise kaise rulaaye zindagi
What a lousy monsterfuck
Wait, the gas is over!
Saali khushi
Jalte jalte raakh jaisi hui hai saari
Khaakh jaisi bewajah si umr saari
Kahaan chali gayee hai saali khushi
There was a season
When we thought it will never be over
We will always laugh like this
We will never grow up
The night just refuses to get up
The day looms like a devil’s shadow
Even the stars look a shade faded
My lousy legs take me to the streets
Can’t take these psychedelic lights…red..blue..amber…
Someone is playing a song
Someone is laughing at a dog
Let me get back to the dark room
Nayan Tarse
TV sucks, look at the fake gangster images
Shut it down
Put the radio on
Oh wow! That song again!
Remember we did this once in college
Yeah, we never got it right
But that was so much fun
Bisar gaye bisar gaye bisar gaye
Swaaha swaaha swaaha
We didn’t know what were we singing
But as Ron took that beat head on
All heads just dropped
And swayed till the end of the night
Bisar gaye bisar gaye bisar gaye
Swaaha swaaha swaaha

Haaye duniya
Ye duniya badi gol hai
Haaye duniya

Man Duniya & Emosanal Attyachar is driving me crazy……
Nyaan tarse… nice interpretation…
We did it in college – yes sir, we did it. But this sounds so much better.
Those days a extended scream was so mesmerizing!
Stanin By Standin By Standin By Standin By
Bisar gaye bisar gaye bisar gaye…
Touche, ravptor. by any means are you talking about the Zero song, the ‘teri ma’ song? :-)
Teri ma it is!!! lol, I had no clue.
I got hoarse singing it for days on end in coll.
LOL. I ll send the song to ya soon. Zero. lots of memories. Bobby, Warren, Xmas in July. Hook. My kind of girl. hmmmm.
Kahan….chali gayee hai saali khushi!!!!
Love it! Aboslutely, love it.
Ain’t in monotonous – totally! The constant attention, the constant praises, the constant adjustments… totally over rated.
The world is a beautiful lie
Ain’t it so beautiful?
Yeah, biggest and most well worded lie – It sucks, beuty my arse… I put in all the work to make it beautiful for u… my arse…
I have the songs… love reprise! Send me their new work after this album if they did any…
spent 2 days in hyd with Warren… awesome jam ever!
Thanks guys, glad that you got the drift. This year looks pleasantly cynical. Cheers!
Oh nice bro, so then you know more than me. No , I don’t have any other of their works.
Have you checked out Warren’s solo effort….all instrumental…just awesome…check it here

the album is so bloody good.
every song is growing on me.
Emosanal Atyachar (Rock), Emosanal Atyachar (Brass Band), Pardesi, Nayan Tarse, and of course Duniya (easily the best track).
awesome Anurag ji.
take a bow Amit Trivedi ji.
i want nayan tarse as my caller tune. pronto.
@Rohan Joshi, Finally you decided to change your name from Akki to Rohan. Thank the Lord!!!
@Rohan, don’t want to spoil my day by arguing but there is really no reason for you giving all that gyaan. People dig some films people dig some music. That’s pretty much about it. Moreover, this ain’t a review, like I said, review is what I did 2 days back. And whoever is AK man. And whoever is Howard whatever.
Oye chhaddo yaar…

Another Amit Trivedi composition..
Ya Tejas, saw it on CNN-IBN recently, check out the special program on 26th Jan too.
@axw11, checking the Warren thing now. Thanks. More power to Zero.
“The way you & some other so called AK fans write smacks of condescension & this condescension & haughtiness was the root cause of AK’s previous film failure at the box office”
ROFLMAO. Get well soon mamoo! LOL!!!
Amit Trivedi is gonna stay here for a long time. I loved his songs in Aamir on first hearing. When I first made my friends listen to Aamir (Mehfuz..), they asked me whether its AR Rahman? But, Dev D songs are taking their own time to grow on me. Right now, I like Duniya, EA rock version and of course Naayan tarse… AT you seriously rock. At least something to cheer from bollywood at the end of this year (was disappointed with RNBDJ, Ghajini becoming superhits). By next week, I’m sure I’ll be knowing all songs..
@ Tushar, have been following music reviews for a long long time. I enjoy your reviews the most. Keep’em coming.
@Vick, Thanks, its truly humbling. I always used to think twice before going the abstract route, but its always inspiring if someone gets the drift. :-)
I am going to places I don’t have to. I just keep driving. I am revisiting painful moments, that didn’t even happen to me. I feel pissed off with things existence of which I am not even aware of. What has this music done to me!! This is something that plays with your emotions, manipulates them and leaves a long-lasting effect! What songs!! Kahan..chali gayee hai saali khushi!, Nayan Tarse, Ankh Micholi khele Zindagi, and Duniya. Anything and everything that screws up a man – happiness, expectations, life, and the world!
Amit Trivedi..see what you’ve done!!!
@Tejas, same here man! It deserves that kinda treatment. Burn some more fuel!
Kar le kar le ab kuchh aisa kar le
Tu aaj angin(at) roshan kirno se tan man bhar ley
Majaa le jalaa le dil mein…
Had nazar ki….
Meetha Sa Chadha Hai Bukhar…. Oh fuck man, I don know what to say… I am in trance…. three times already…oh yes oh yes come on….
@Vee, thank god for such bukhaar’s! :-)
I revisited these interpretations after the film has sunk in, and it’s nice to see some of my imagined usage of the words being there in the film as I thought.
