DEV D Review : We all are sluts! (From the premier at Chandigarh)
****** Warning li’l SPOILERS AHEAD********
DEV.D Movie Review
I am not able to get over it…it’s been just 15 minutes since I’ve left the cinema hall, which for once it was the destined one at Chandigarh(a rare opportunity), premiering DEV D.
Yes,I am not able to get over it,meeting Anurag kashyap(just in case you are reading it sir, then m the guy who was roaming like crazy to get your autograph on my DEV D cd,was looking for amit trivedi too L but he wasn’t there),and the ladies kalki and mahi and then last but not the least having this cinematic orgasm.
In words of Adarsh sahib “Let me get it straight ,DEV D is no NO SMOKING,it doesn’t make u think about the abstract meaning of what it shows,it is on your face when it tells you that we as men are mortals and sluts in form or the other.”
Anurag takes us through the lives of 3 mortal characters, who are flawed, yes we all are, they have instincts that they don’t hide, they are shameless with people they know as we all are, asisiting Anurag in this brilliantly filmed journey is AMIT TRIVEDI’s music, every word is connected to the story, every song is rightly placed (xcpt three back to back songs which pissed me off during the marriage scene),and u never realized that you have just watched a movie with 18 goddamn songs, such is the manner it blends with the story line.
Coming back to the movie,The detailing is phenomenal, the dialogue, the graffiti, the camera, a “real” Punjabi wedding, the abuse, the bong, the drugs, the momos, the brothels ,the black goggles and even the sex everything is so well placed and thought of that you just cant stop ur self from standing up and givin AK a bow for this work.
He questions us time and again about the way we treat women,a sin which is deeply rooted in Indian phsyche with sublte remarks like “MA- HILAYE” on a bus window,Godesses Kali with money in one of her hands in a graffiti at dev’s room, spot on!!.
Casting is another high point here, with ABHAY standing tall and Mahi, she was just as raw as the character wanted her to be( I wonder if a director ever before dared to show what testosterone charged young lovers talk on phone like the brilliant “have u touched yourself?” in the starting scene ,couldn’t stop smiling),
KALKI ,I think she was made for this role, the innocence of a school girl and then Chanda a girl with no regrets, she has surrendered her to the conditions around her which at one point of time every man does, thus becoming a ’slut’.
About the songs,I think Duniya was brilliantly picturized so was emotional atyaachar Rock version, Just couldn’t understand the presence of 3 GUYS(may be anurag’s three musketeers),who danced their way around in Sali khushi and pardesi (waiting for AK’s DEV D Dairies).
It’s been 4 months since I was waiting for this
it was a fulfilling experience I quenched the thirst today , I got the autographs I wanted on the DEV D CD, met the maestro but
as I came out of the show like a franatic fanboy..
I asked him out of nothing ,”sir is there an alternate ending that you have shot for the DVD’s…?
and the man said..NO!

Oh yaar… I missed it!!!… The man himself.. Anurag Kashyap in Chandigarh.. and the screening at 2 mins walking distance from my office…
Will have to wait till Friday now… :(
awesome man….!!! I am dying to watch this one…
will be going for first show here in hyderabad..only humans are flawed but not this movie after reading so much previews and reviews;Hail Anurag Kashyap!!!
Kudos for breaking grounds of morality and ethics based on religious myths.
Anurag, Is there a premier/preview scheduled for Delhi also?
This has to be a first for Chandigarh. Great idea!
hey anurag since paanch is not gooing to be released by the censor board, why dont u release it on the web like on pfc or on youtube
3 guys are the Twilight Players…
Well i dont see DEV D playing at any theater in the Tristate area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) coming Friday. Does it have a limited international release. Does anyone have any info.
Just can’t wait! It’s like starving right now
What was the crowd reaction?
This makes me feel like watching the movie right away, but UTV is not organising even a media preview! So will have to wait till Friday…
Cinosh: Anurag will correct me if I am wrong, but I think Paanch has been cleared by the CBFC after court intervention, and now it is more of a distribution issue. I too feel Anurag should get it released in the home video market. I had seen it a few years ago, and it’s awesome – grungy like many of those angry European movies.
@om
Although most of d crwd ws family kinda,d crowd gigled at the jokes, evry 2nd min or so,
Standin ovation frm majority of d crwd in d end.ppl ddnt xpctd d film 2 end abruptly as most of em were xpctng devdas havin the written endin whr he dies.it tuk sum tyme bt al aplause nd thn d press tuk ovr.
xcuse me fr d sms lingo as m posting frm my cellphn.
Paanch is cleared? REALLY???
Wonder what this means
>>I asked him out of nothing ,”sir is there an alternate ending that you have shot for the DVD’s…?
and the man said..NO!
Looking forward to this on friday.
Dev D is also not releasing in and around Boston. which sux !!! Its actually releasing in only Lakewood and Fremont. so apart from ppl living in california, none of the others can really watch it… DARN.
I’ve already watched Devdas with Sharukh Khan.
I liked the story very much. I will watch out for this movie too.
Its not releasing in Dallas?????
Damn :(
Not releasing in NJ,PA, DC Area, wat the heck???
NRI Cribbers, come back to India. Simple.
NRI love RNBDJ
neither in boston..this sucksss :(
Lucky me! It’s releasing in Singapore. The cinema website shows next change DEV D, but not the date. Anyway, it is releasing here and I am gonna watch it.
waiting to see it in dallas
If anyone has any info on this movie releasing in the Chicagoland area, let me know. Fandango has no info on any theater in this part of the world. :(
Dev.D also is playing at The Imaginasian in New York City and the Cineplaza @ Columbia Park 12 in North Bergen, NJ starting Friday, Feb. 6.
Awww, shucks. The situation is screwed in Bombay. There’s some fight between the multiplexes and the distributor, according to a newspaper in report. This means that Dev.D will only release in single screens and stand-along multiplexes. Maybe that’s the best way to watch the film — from the front row!!
Ok DPAC – I assume ur in Australia as well from a conversation we had long time back. Is Dev D coming out in Sydney? I cant see it yet on the greaterunion, hoyts or reading websites. I do not want to go the torrent way! NO!
Anyone? When and where is this releasing in Aus?
its not releasing in multiplexes…appparently they shifted the premiere to Chandan Cinema in Juhu which is the 1t time in 4 years a premiere is being held at a single screen theatre….this movie will bomb without the multiplex crowd…
lucky u… hv to wait till sunday morn. darn. ye kaisi kaisi aankh micholi khele zindagi…
can’t wait any longer….thanks for writing the review…
I hope it doesn’t bomb and that audiences have better sense… read an interesting review of the film in Time Out Mumbai which made me fall in Abhay all over again…
Darn! No multiplex release! Hmph!
Got tickets for Friday show..in chennai… apparently its playing in only 2 theatres…not playing in inox..playing only 2 shows in Sathyam..and 4 shows in woodlands… kind of sad… i dont think the marketing team of DevD has done their job well…. in metros if its releasing in few places…then collections wise…i have hardly any expectations :(
@Jugnu, can you paste the link of the review…i couldn’t find in their site..
Anand G, im in the same boat as you mate!!
No clue where or IF its gonna realease..
but my bets are on Greater Union.
Dev.D Review

Its unbelievable, how can they not release it in Multiplexes. Majority of the business will come from multiplexes only.
I just wish the fight gets resolved by tomorrow and I can watch it in IMAX.
I don’t wanna watch it in Chandan Cinema.
Anand G & DPac – No sign of Dev.D yet. Not even a smoke signal. :(
http://www.google.com/movies?near=sydney&sort=3&num=100
Pata nahin kyun, mujhe aisa lag raha hai ki Anuragbhai ne ek badi gand aakhir macha hi di hai jiska hamen itne dinon se intezaar tha. :-)
Really strange that the movie isnt getting released in multiplexes.Well whatever we say this is not something that single screen audiences will lap it up so easily.I dont know why UTV is unable to wrap up the issue.Come on guys do something fast.
release in the USA with “4″ prints
Naz8 Artesia (Los Angeles)
Naz8 Fremont (Bay Area)
Imaginasian (NYC)
Columbia Par
Only 4 prints????
What is wrong with UTV?? Aamir released with atleast 25 prints if I remember.
Really disappointed :(
DPac / wb : As Dpac says, am pretty confident Greater Union will pick it up soon. Sometimes they seem to release movies on basis of hype. Luck by chance wasnt showing anywhere except Reading – Auburn and now they are showing it at GU – Burwood. So lets hope we get to see it on the big screen before we get desperate and resort to alternatives (includin flyin back home?).
Do we have a large PfC following in Sydney? Or is it just the 3 of us?
Arrey bhailog, we are living in times of recession. Koi bhi yahan paison mein naha nahi raha hai. Four prints in the US is a very big deal considering the financial situation. Ronadhona band karo bhai.
I knowww!!! Imagine wat it wud b like 2 listen to EA (rock version) along wid the garrhh-garrhh of the fans!!! lol
For those from Calcutta, “Chandan” theatre is the equivalent of “Paradise” or “Roxy” over here… :-(
Finally got tickets for 10:30 PM sterling.
They are screening the 4:45 pm show on screen 1( which is the best screen).
10:30 show is on screen 3 which is kinda bad coz of flat seating.
Still better than Chandan
The wait is getting longer for tomorrow , as i sit and type the message ,man hope it catch it in Anand a single screen theatre, hope to enjoy the ambeince.
By the way , just had fortune to speak on phone with anurag on 3 of this month. Man o Man it was such a thrill to hear his voice.
Anurag told he can arrange a private screening of paanch , if i get 20 people and book a preview theatre.
So i guess i need 19 more people .Anyone wants to join.
Anand G , im not in Sydney these days..
Meblourne
Cinemausher…bring it to dubai..i’ll get you 500 people.
Cinemausher- Are you referring to Anand cinema in Thane?
Got to watch back-to-back shows :D
12.30 pm – Naan Kadavul – Sathyam
3.45 pm – DevD – 6 Degrees (Sathyam)
It’s good to know too languages. :D
Hope Naan Kadavul finishes at 3.30 pm :-)
it is actually “two” languages. Not too.
@Sethu,
Yes Anand in Thane.
@Sivakumar,
I guess Naan Kadavul is not releasing in Mumbai. Have to wait FOR IT.
btw Bala is Anurag’s favourite tamil director.
Sivakumar- My guess was right then.I am really envious of you.Sathyam is like my 2nd home in Chennai- wish I was there tomorrow for watching both.
Cinemausher- check out Aurora Cinema in King’s Circle- near Matunga.I think Naan Kadavul might release there tomorrow.Anand Cinema in Thane is a decent theatre -I’ve seen a lot of movies there in the past
bookmyshow shows only two shows of rex theater for DEV D in Bangalore. Is it not releaseing in any other theater here ???
Balaji- looks like some panga going on between UTV & the multiplexes.I am feeling sad- the movie is almost certain to get a good initial in the mulitplexes due to the curiosity generated. But all the good work could get affected now.lets hope for the best.
Bangalore guys…inoxmovies.com is listing the movie in JP Nagar and another theatre….check out…and enjoy :-)
In bangalore, its releasing in cauvery- 4 shows, urvashi-2 shows, rex- i tink its 4 shows, i may be wron, i saw d board in rex itself yesterday. They mite ve enjoyed. These r d single screens.
yeah Inox is listing DEV D..cool…
oops.. Changed not enjoyed..
can anyone including anurag please tell me when paanch is going to hit theatres….
Yeah Inox is now listing Dev D in both Chennai & Bangalore. So good for all those in Chennai & B’lore.
Sorry its Jayanagar and Magrath road….not JP Nagar
Yeeeeeeh…I am dying to watch it…
Sounds good.
I am dying to see this.
interesting review out on livemint.com… not bad to start with :-) considering Anurag’s tryst with media….
4 prints in America, yet not 1 in England.
Oh well :-(
Fuck I am so nervous!! Anurag, where art thou? Please tell us the whole multiplex thing is sorted out. BTW, its time to open the chardonnay people: Times of India gave Dev.D a 5 star rating. Coolness!! Here’s the link: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/moviereview/4082878.cms
Great… hope word of mouth spreads fast…because in coming weeks its hard to contest against the Billo Barber and Dilli 6.
Aye na Chaalbe
I have hardly ever agreed with Nikhat Kazmi’s reviews, but 5 stars to Dev D must mean something!
sorry, i just saw the reply to my earlier mail. here goes the url: http://timeoutmumbai.net/film/film_details.asp?code=512&source=2
The magazine also has a fab interview with Abhay where he talks about who his school friends were (won’t spoil it for you). There’s some other stuff on indie directors and what they think of the future. I liked what Sriram Raghavan and Rajat Kapoor had to say… I bought it off the stands but I believe the mag’s website is updated every other Friday. Any reax??
it’s there in inox ,fame ,pvr in bangalore.
F*** man…all tickets are sold in PVR bangalore till sunday :(
ab Innovative ka hi sahaara hai….
Got the First Day First show tickets in Inox Magrath Road (Bangalore). Great to see the TOI review. Very well written. Hope other reviews follow suit. The Timeout Mumbai review seems very contrived, pseudo and tacit. It gives the movie a 3 star rating, but in a very understated way, terms the movie an Emotional Atyachar. It also takes understated shots at Anurag mentioning he liked Kalki more than the hero and stuff. I found it really duplicous. Hopefully fellow PFCites trash the review and give it a piece of their mind
As far as I’m concerned I’ll write a comment on that article after 12:30 pm tomorrow.
Managed to get 2 tickets to INOX for tomorrow. PVR started booking later but the best part is that PVR bangalore shows Dev D sold out till wednesday! thats brilliant and i just hope the other cities go the same way! I just hope AK finally gets his due and Dev D fucks Billu barber next week! :D
Wow, now all multiplexes in Bangalore are showing Dev.D. Inox, PVR, Fame, Fun etc.
Even when I did my tickets, which was around 10, only Inox and Rex were showing Dev.D open.
It’s great to see all Multiplex smoke disappear. 8 more hours to go
I am catching it second show at Vision, Subhasish. 12 more hrs!
Relieved that the multiplex issue is over. Cant wait, just booked the 3:30pm show tomorrow…13hrs!!
juss came back frm d premiere at chandan theatre..
saw it friends..
shook hands with the man himself too – ANURAG KASHYAP!
i loved the first half..
but was highly disappointed wid d second half..
too many songs..
hated d screenplay..
overall okay film..
Fucking can’t believe Nikhat giving it 5 in TOI. She say ‘coming-of-age’ .. Well, I would like to call her reviews ‘coming-of-age’ after eons…
Congrats to each and every fucking person associated with DEV.D
P.S. Nikhat says this in her review: “Manorama Six Feet Under, Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye were just teasers. Dev D is the class act from the Deol who cleverly flew over the cuckoo’s nest. Don’t miss this film which completely reinvents the musical love story”
Taran Adarsh’s review – 1 star.
http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movies/review/13812/index.html
Calls its No Smoking II.
The fact that Taran continuously refers to No Smoking in his “Dev D” review proves that he’s still smarting from the backlash he got from AK & his cronies for his No Smoking review.
A sad day in the history of film journalism when someone like Taran gets personal and tries sabotaging a film’s prospects. :-(
Believe me, Taran has a tendency to favouritize movies & also criticize movies just to push his personal ego. I seriously feel he is a Idiot. This is the same guy who gave a movie like Black 2 stars?! Can you believe that… He is overrated!!
wat abt pune??…is dis movie releasing in pune’s multiplexes??

Indian express — thumbs up…:-)
“Dev D’ is a contemporary classic. Watch it, whatever else you do.”
Aftermaths of watching DEV.D:
I swear on the holy name of booze and Rock n Roll, that
every damn scene on music channels, movie channels, new channels seems so TASTELESS after watching DEV.D.yes tasteless is the word
i hv played the ankh micholi song freaking 50 times since yestday…
and readin TOI and indianexpress reviews hav hyped me up.wao!!
great movie.Lovers of good cinema don’t miss it by any chance. It is a truly Indian film since rather than dialogues it is 18 songs that take the movie forward.Awesome songs and excellant placement.I sort of feel dialogues should have been better, then definitely it wuld have been a masterpiece.Eventhough all actors have done their job well,I don’t get it why AK wanted a foreign girl to play role of Chanda
Taran Adarsh who gave Singh is King a 4.5 gave Dev D a 1. what a taste he has.
Raja Sen gave it a 3.5 out of 5. TOI gave it a 5.
I hope Rajeev Masand reviews it well because many people set store by what he says.
Rajeev gave a 4 for Black Friday and a 1 for No Smoking
here is an interesting discussion between Rajeev and Anurag.
http://www.mid-day.com/specials/2008/oct/051008-Anurag-Kashyap-director-Rajeev-Masand-heated-discussion.htm

Mannn!! Thanks for the review.this is first thing I am doing after coming to office today.Got shit loadz of stuff to worry about but the review of DEV D is main things of my day! beside listening Nayan Tarseeeee!
Cheers Anuragggggg!
great movie.go for it
taran looks like still hasn`t moved on from the bang bang he got from AK no smoking. While AK has moved on but Taran still seems to stuck on that one. Dude, taran, move on …this happens yaar.
While Raja Sen gives Dev.D 3.5 astars
http://ia.rediff.com/movies/2009/feb/06review-dev-d.htm
Who consider Taran Adarsh as a critic? If this film had item songs, toilet humour, silly sentiments,he would have given 5 stars. He is also miffed by the fact that UTV spot boy is not willing to pay him for his ‘good reviews’ like Johars and Chopras
@Sethu,
Have to check aurora.
Yes Anand is affordable for people like me, and it gives an option rather than to see on pirated dvd.
I work for website which publishes Taran,s Review .I myself have surprised one star even if the movie has been bad , one star guys remember Taran gave karzzzz four stars , may be it had 4 zzzz.
DPac / wb : Watch out for Dev D in GU start of next week. Donno the credibility of the information but seems genuine. Fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, saw Naan Kadavul at GU tonight. Brilliant. Someone please write a review on that.
Found this review through google blog search.
Great review sir. Looking forward to watching this movie.
who bought all the tickets from PVR, Bangalore?
They have none for like ever..
Why the hell isn this movie playing in Australia, I am so annoyed GRR!!!!
anandji, hum bhi sydney se hai.
and yes, aint running anywhere yet…. hopefully as you say greater union pick it up..
dont wanna get my northumberland street dvd for this one !
taran sir again has to say this and I quote
“DEV D had a 25% – 35% start at select screens, while the opening was much lower at others. The reports are negative and a decline in business was noticed on Day 1 itself. The general feedback is that the film is not likely to sustain.”
Reviewer: Mayank Yadav Rating: 9 out of 10 Friday, February 06, 2009
For everyone who is into anything intelligent / artistic / creative anything.Anurag kashyap has to be someone you must look up to. Wordsworth once said that “Poetry is spontaneous overflow of powerful emotions recollected in tranquility”.Well so are Anurag Kashyap’s stupendous narratives. If the likes of Burrogh,Nolan , Fellini , Pascolini , Tarantiono , Kubrick , Soderbergh ever did fascinate you and if ever did movies like “Naked Lunch”,”Riquem of a dream”,”Drugstore cowboy”,”My own private Idaho” took you to a trip to neverland.Well than it would be your most memorable trip this time around. This is one movie every Indian proudly recommend foreigners to see.For all who claim that this is a remake are illiterate buffoons. This reviewer pities for they will never have the prevledge of enjoying this masterpiece of art as an extremely specific commodity.I don’t get it why people are insisting for it to be a youngster movie. It is a portrayal of a state of mind anyone could relate to.You love to hate every character in this movie cause they are as real as real could be.Never trust any reviewer for this can be different movie for different people but an extremely enjoyable modern day classic for a thinking mind.
#Comment 47
Please consider me in for the screening of Panch
My mail id is :umeshti@yahoo.co.in
Well…..the review was nice and crisp..and so was the movie..Nice movie overall..The good thing is it makes all aware in our social network that a woman of this century can also live upto what she wants..A strong jatni can beat the scoundrel rowdies in her village..a school gal can also wish to live her life against all hypocritic odds of the society..Great Job by AK…hats off.
ooh…damn…!! This movie will not release in multiplexes..!! :(
anuraag kashyapji, amit trivedi and abhay deol…..future of indian cinema and assets of the trade!!….bang on movie!!….waiting for dvd release.
Never in my life I expected to enjoy bollywood music after drinks.Take a Bow man .. take a BOw.for once I thought that may be I’m going too finicky about Dev_d, may be its not that good, but once you get into Dev_d binge.tendency is to go as far as you can.Music ….here is an exemplary work which is one hell of a ride.Rock, country, folk, upbeat, choclatey times…. name it and you have it on this album.
This music has tendency to grow on you and stay with you, never before I’ve head that kinda stuff in bollywood.Amit Trivedi…. nobody knows him as of now .. but count on me guys he’s gonna rock bollywood. As I was about to conclude that our cinema is dead, our music is dead, Anurag and Amit slapped Dev_d on my face and said be realistic and god bless them for that slap.I’m not sure if everyone will like it, but who care man, it hits me like a bullet right between my eyes .. one hell of a trippy ride.
Take a BOW………………..
Now lets Talk about some technical aspect of Dev_d.
Hats off for its cinematography…. I loved that trippy camera work, and if you were wondering why there was a thanks to Danny Boyle in numbering.. he helped anurag to get special camera for those trippy scenes. What impresses me is anurag didnt
copy a hollywood movie, with his kind of camera work I’m sure he can do just to any of the top notch Holly-Movie, But instead
he went with his gut feeling and chooses contemporary Devdas. This shows how much creativity he has in his blood, and not to
forget his talented crew. All guys were spot on.I deeply believed they unleashed indian cinema from the shackles these commercially sell out directors have created. This movie is a landmark in our entertainment industry, and I’m hoping our youth directors to imbibe alot from this piece of art. We all consciously or unconsciously craving to see some life on screen, and that’s exactly what this movie gave us.This movie has everything to be the first cult movie of our industry.
Abhay Deol: I know he will make it big someday,By big I dont mean commercially but critically. I watched his first movie Socha na Tha , and coudn’t believe it was a flop, and I feel so sorry for unaesthetic trait of indian community. He finally break the Ice and proved he’s not going to follow deols at all.I’ve seen all his movies, and the kinda movie an actor chooses tells a lot about his personality. Now he’s my second Rahul Bose.
Mahi Gill: Its hard to believe thats her first movie. She just gave her all into the role of modern paro, she went in soo swiftly, never ever in a scene it felt like she’s acting or trying to act, which is a trait of a professional actor. If we
talk about her looks , anurag is right when he said he’s looking for rustic, raw, and a girl with earthly sexuality. She’s a blend of all those. Ten on ten for this debutant.
Kalki: I think I’ll again give credit to anurag for selecting Kalki for chanda. Now she’s so very opposite of Paro, innocuous,
innocent, naive. she’s like a cute little puppy who has no Idea how weird this world can be but finally come in terms with it.Again I coudn’t believe its her first movie, I think a lot of credit should be given to anurag too, as he was able to get those impeccable acts out from kalki. She is definitely a surprise package for all.
Amit Trivedi: Where the hell was he all those years?… he will give himesh, anu, and all other fags(Dont include Rehman here) a run for there money.I’m runnning out of words here for Dev_d’s music.Anurag used music in a very unorthodox way, he uses it to set the pace of movie most of the time.At some instances movie slows down and music takes it forward. As soon as movie looses its engrossing power a superb song comes in between which suits the situation so well and makes us sit tight on our seats again. It blends with movie perfectly and you left multiplex craving for more with a good taste in your mouth.A+ for music.
