Ohhh….
Oh Man, this is really Andy Warholian. Fundu.
sucks ass.. screams faux faux faux to fuaxfauxland and back… still amped about the film but the poster scores a duck..
Warhol is the word.
This is simply mind-blowing & promising though i hope it isnt as abstarct as No Smoking coz Im waiting fr a film by AK which I watch again & again not to understand it but to enjoy it..all the best Anurag bhai
Todays MUMBAI MIRROR has an article on how ronnie screvwala thinks the movie sucks and he’s roped in sudhir mishra to salvage it…when a producer like ronnie screvwala whos taken the most risks in the industry thinks your movie sucks i really dont know what to make of it…hope its just tabloid shit
http://www.mumbaimirror.com/index.aspx?page=article§id=30&contentid=20081113200811130328188618bda72cc§xslt=section
Kyon yaar kyon??? Not that I am any authority, but i observed in B’lore plexes that No Smoking poster attracted wrong kinda audience. Hell, now I am afraid this will not attract any kinda audience… is the attempt to intimidate the viewer, scare ‘em away or what? Who knows Warhol? And who cares? Well, the trailor was awesome, the poster killed it. Will watch Dev D anyways. I rest my case. Gawd bless.
‘Hmm’ is all I can type. Hmm is all I ’said’ actually.
This looks very different. But don’t know if one would be appealed to see the movie after seeing this.
Like Magik said, I am not an authority on anything. But I know what my friends’ reaction will be if they saw this poster.
what’s the big deal. its just a fu**in’ poster…
No offense sir, i would rather call it waste of potential.
does not reflect the psychedelia I expect from the movie… looks like a Fashion flick!
Have to agree with Magik and Gopi here… The poster is just plain ugly! And I am usually kind in my comments, try to find the best in everything. The top part – sunglasses, reflection, etc… – is cool, but the lips make it look like a Donald Duck rip-off. And to those who mentioned Andy Warhol, the poor man is turning over in his grave. REALLY????
i feel that if the film succeed with the audience the poster will be a trend-setter..many filmmakers wud start giving more importance to the first look of their films in future
more importance in terms of creativity not designing or composition
the weird thing is the only problem i have with the poster is the lips (love the pink, abhay’s glasses and the reflection on them), but on second thought its the lips that make the poster standout.
but i have to agree, the general public is going to freak out and i don’t mean in a good way. if this was Europe, this same poster would have generated a lot of interest, curiosity etc but boss yeh India hai….
HONESTLY….the poster is a big turn off aftr the killer trailer. These guys wanted to make it trippy…agreed…but its plain ugly. Looks like a rip off frm the prodigy album, “Always outnumbered, but never undergunned”.
The team should hold some sorta competition for the poster…open to aam janta.
LOVE THE TYPE…though.
i loved the trailer but the poster not really sure! again, i don’t really know much on what the movie is about and intend to watch it, so will not let the poster come in the way. my first reaction was this will intimidate / not interest most indian viewers.
The poster sucks big time.
Mr AK ,get a new one designed which showcases the theme of the movie.
@Tushar:
“It’s just a f***ing poster”??????
JUST a f***ing poster?
Movies can be JUST a f***ing movie.
A book, can be JUST a f***ing book.
Nothing is life changing really.
There is a lot of hard work that goes into it. The pink smoke. Symmetrical reflection on the glasses. The whole look of it. It’s a piece of art man.
My only gripe with it was, what’s the point? I don’t see a message to this poster. And I look for a message in a poster. Then think about casual onlookers. It will strike them as odd.
I realize the importance of freedom of expression. But I honestly want people to come see this movie. To understand what good movie is; fingers crossed. And this poster might intrigue, but not invite people to the movie.
@ Gopi
Dude I think the objective was to intrigue people with this poster & if that was the case- I think they are bang on!!!
Dont forget this is just the first poster to be brought out & so there’s a long way to go before the movie releases…
The reflections on the spects are cool.
.
Not sure about the lips though. Looks Bad.
AK is playing with us. This is actually the poster for a dark and abstract Hanuman Returns. :P
@Indypendy
ROFL.
why everyone wants to know the story idea out of this poster ? The look of the poster is “absurd”.
After watching movie we might find some sense out of this poster.
Btw, i am loving it ;)
I believe that Marching Ants (an ad and pr firm) must have designed this poster. I may be wrong. It’s just not executed that well….
It sucks. Period. Warhol- oh, gimme a break- this is plain ugly.
my first reaction was same O boy!! but I am yet not sure if the poster is abstract, funny , horny or shit !!!
The poster should have read Mich J, or Jan J
way over the top, and as Gopi points out it might put off new comers who are not so much acquainted with AK, forget Warhol! Why restrict your audiences when you would want them more, abstract or no abstract?
Ugly, again way over the top. If the intention was to shock and elicit these reactions, success!
Ohhh… – Was all that I could say until now.
I have not come across a movie poster in long time where in the presence of the woman / female protagonist has come out so strongly. That too depicted just as luscious lips.
I just feel that here it is she who is ‘The One’….
I don’t think I am saying this because I am female but this is what I see…
May be I am overreacting and being impulsive (I hope I am not). Assuming this is a genuine poster, why write articles in tabloids accusing SLB of making stuff that screams “look at me”??? don’t say this poster is tongue in cheek now! I know the movie is not out and I am not even jumping the gun. Isn’t a poster an index of the fare to come?
what is exactly “ugly” in the poster? only the presence of the lips??
But Arthi to peel layers and see beneath, something shouldn’t be outright repulsive right? You are fortunate to look at it that way, and more power to you. Imagine this out in public! or may be this is only for private select circulation among many more out there.
Looks a bit like Luis Bunuel’s “The Discreet charm of the bourgeoisie” poster. When I watch it close this is what I think : It celebrates Dev.D’s lust and addiction ( pink smoke from pink lips) in a dichotomous relation with his internal reflection, which is dark, confined and waiting to break free from the confines of his own existence ( a silhouette of Dev trapped in a frame). I dont know the story of the film but this is what I construe from the poster.
@ Santosh Kumar T K- you’ve answered your own qns…:-)….
The first poster was much interesting :

My thoughts:
-
If you see this poster from few meters away,
it looks like Protagonist has some marks on his forehead, (it is a smoke line actually)
Lips and smoke, both the elements has same color pink,.
(Just the technical stuff)
And lips are so dominant that one could easily ignore the title of the movie,
How about putting Title on the lips??
(Just a thought)
Hi guys.. all your speculations aside.. this film is not No Smoking.. and I am proud of the poster.. it might put off some of you but I am sure after watching the film you will like the same.. I m happy that it bothers you.. there is more to come.. and the article in the mumbai mirror is completely fabricated and planted.. watch the film and then judge it..
Sure , I’m going to watch it ,.
majaa aayega
@Anurag: Was I anywhere close to what you intended with the poster (@35)?
poster reminds me a bit of ‘FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS’..what say anurag?
wow atleast it is MUCH better than yash raj crap posters we see everyday
people need to chill it is unique poster who cares it attracts audience or not but i give credit to AK for being creative
LOL ..
looking at the poster .. first i did not understand wat to comment or say but after reading the rest of the comments posted i once again looked at the poster and it read
“KISS MY ASS”
all of u out there just try this trick .. dont think anything bout it then read all wat ppl gotto say and see wat it speaks ..
its got this attitude tht says f**k the world. dev d is not how u want him to be he is the way he is and will continue to be
and if that is conveyed in the movie then mark u me this same bloody poster will be a cult !!
Hi Anurag,
I’ve just one question. Don’t you think it’s too big a risk in India? Do You weigh commercial success also as a parameter?
Because I fear if it fails in BO like NO SMOKING, I might have to wait that much longer to see another NO SMOKING.
I sincerely believe in the kind of change that you can bring to Bollywood if the movies also worked in BO.
I loved Arthi V’s comments. If that’s how I am going to view it, as the bigger presence of the female protagonist, then I like it. But as an intelligent person, am I supposed to be told what to think of a poster? Isn’t it supposed to intrigue me enough to want to pursue viewing the film, not the other way around? The trailer rocks, but the poster…
@ Anurag
I agree with you.I am sure you have a lot of surprises for us & I am already getting prepared for it.I mean when I asked people to accompany me for No Smoking- all I got in response was either silence or some disdainful looks, but I did go ahead & watch it. so no way am I going to miss this one of yours.
And frankly speaking I did like your poster- saw it on Indiafm first & my first impression was isnt it a combination of devdas meets James Bond??? I know I may sound odd but then thats my take!!!
I didn’t like it, it tries to be different by going way over the top, not a good thing to do I believe. But, the fate of movies is hardly decided by the posters, it builds up curiosity, thats it. This poster invokes extreme kind of a reaction, which might ultimately help the movie in the long run.
@Everyone: I’m tired of hearing this from everyone(including me), Anurag’s this movie is/will be/should be cult. I don’t want Anurag’s movie to be a cult, I want it to make truckload of money, the kind of money which a YRF movie makes. Obscene money!
I can’t make head or tail out of this poster as it doesn’t give me an idea what it is all about. I know its my limitation. So, I shall wait for more info and discard this one…..
rated ‘NC-17′ FOR EXPLICIT DRUG USE AND SOME SEX SCENE. GOOD POSTER.
GREAT POSTER
It shows how protagonist’s body is turning into wasp through the attractive lips and the shades are making him blind but are reflecting his personality to others. At least that’s what I perceive from it.
I agree with tanul on this. I also hope that whatever be the critical acclaim, this movie makes a ton of money. Sirf crtical acclaim se producers nahin aatey hain… I want anurage to make lots and lots of movies…. and for that…it is essential that the movie makes MONEY.
Anurag – sorry boss, with all due resepct…the poster seems to be way over the top… lets not do something extra different even if its not needed just to reiterate/maintain that we are different…
Maybe it’s my geek background talking, but I thought it was a homonculus with someone else’s lips. Trippy!
having mixed thoughts about the poster…but liked the trailer and will definitely watch the movie….from the poster I thought probably Dev D discovers in the course of the movie that he is gay….the lips depicted on his face…anywayz waiting…
Let it unfold one by one…..bhailog
the trailer
poster ……Music…the Film….
From the trailer and the poster we come to know
it’s extreme…..an experiment..in FORM…but has a definite heart and a story to tell…
Anyways the extreme reactions to No Smoking or Dev.D posters or anything AK makes has become a norm…an envious position of being the most exciting and the most awaited guy and a not very envious position of being subjected to the harshest of criticism.
Sleaze……terrible…..put off…trying too hard? Its trying at least and not sticking to a GOOD LOOKING poster…an artistic one….an aesthetic one….
I love the art work on Hindi novels…..Tamil Mags the PULP ones…..
It’s a sure shot clutter breaker…it forces one to take notice….it stands out…and with the reaction I think it sure has…..
Have never ever seen or heard such reactions to the poster of a film…..never in my life. In fact when was the last we even discussed a film poster???? maybe it compels one to react….affirmative…negative….
It has sure done it’s job if one if forced to react…..
When is the last time we had an OUTRAGIOUS design……it’s always has to be safe and pleasing if it a love story…….blood if violent….what do you classify Dev.D as????
The last great poster??? Parinda? Ashique? Dil Chahata Hai? In fact I would love a list of posters which affect you…..the ones that stood out….made one react…..
What did the Omkara poster did to anyone……I love the film……but the poster did nothing….did it curb my curiosity…..it generated none….it had Devgan….it had Saif in a New look…so with the liberty of stars just put them on the poster…..
anything could have been done with it……the tragedy……the envy……the betrayal….the innocence……it played safe…..and so do most…..
The poster culture in India is direct and to the point…tell them the star cast thats it….and nothing else……
Today we collect classic film posters….I download and print B Grade ones…they are distinct…..have a flavor……even repulsive…crass…..but they stand apart….
They were not conventionally beautiful……or pleasing to the eye…..but they prick the eye if not please all……I LOVE IT
i also give abhay a credit for always trying diffrent i hope he gets succes with OLLO and Dev d
No Smoking made me Smoke. This one is going to make me want to do Drugs.
When I keep reading responses and reactions to Anurag’s work – whether it’s No Smoking, Black Friday or his posts here – I wonder – would the same people have been following him so fervently and react to his work so passionately, had his films been financially successful and ‘critically’ widely acclaimed? :D If he did not have to struggle so much to make the movies?
I loved the poster. Although it reminds me of chick flicks, I am seeing the lips as more ‘femme fatale’ thingy. Those are some fucking killer lips man.
Maybe it’s just the funky glasses, but the first thing that came to mind when I saw this poster was “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.” Anyways, greatly awaiting Dev D. All the best Kashyap Sahib.
Guys…All I wud say is…after a period of time…It will be matter of pride for many film fanatics to have this poster in their rooms…so as AKs films!
why so serious?
Wow… what a night does to a discussion board? I haven’t seen any Indian poster being discussed so much. I would love to see this poster getting discussed in venues outside of Passion for Cinema.
My blog doesn’t have much traffic, but still I’m gonna put it up there to see if I get any response. Why don’t the rest of us do the same?
what is the film’s cost??
@Anurag: I like the concept of the poster, but the execution is very bad.
what is the concept of the poster you thought was, Jahan? what was the execution you were expecting? OR how can one better it according to you?????
@Vasan: Sorry I didn’t mean ‘concept’ literally, but generally the whole feel of it and the visual fits very well with the way the movie looks via the trailer, and I like the idea of juxtaposing Chanda’s lips (I assume) here. But I think it looks ugly in the final product. Now don’t ask me how it could have been improved. That’s perhaps what the designers should think of.
Why does the figure in sunglasses look like Ranbir kapoor in a towel???
Jahan – point taken
@Neeraja:
I second that.
this is 68th post on a Poster! not a movie review… just plain poster…
i think Poster has done its job… i do believe “great movies have (to begin with) great posters.” Although above poster has its job, still i wont call yet a great poster. A great poster should have film overall theme or story.
A Boy yawning casts a shadow of army man.. Lakshya
A neat educated man sitting between bunch poor villagers in a boat & thinking.. Swades
A kid smiling and his teacher sitting behind him lookin at his smile.. TZP
@ neeraja: Ranbir kapoor in a towel??? LOL. Klassic!!!
@ parth: totally agree.
Jahan,
Maybe I am spouting senseless drivel here, I dont know..
But why apologize for having expressed your line of thought???
I mean.. I pesonally believe that every film-maker who writes here would be better served if our comments convey an honest opinion of their work and not base itself in a belief that he/she is an admirable creature because they operate their creativity in a larger public domain..
Its not even about democracy u see.. democracy is too small a concept when compared to “artistic arrogance”… Your humility should be reflected in your thoughts about the medium of film-making in general. Because the medium has taken years and years of perseverance, holiness and creative minds to find its feet.
Luis Bunuel’s ‘The obscure object of desire’ right on it reminds me of.
@Bombaybitch: Does it? I mean, anything apart from the lips… both tend to narrate a different story… even the presentation and visual effect of the composition seems different. Anyway, you may have a different take!
Anyway, is this poster repulsive… NO (rather emphatically!), does it justify the story (I don’t know- I haven’t watched the film!), does it in any way stop you from watching the movie (NOOOOOO! and a couple of more Os to enhance what I intend to say!). So ladies and gentlemen, stop being critical. It is not the only thing in the world. And any fu***g poster could piss you off! Somebody mentioned Lakshya- a good concept but the rendering was bland, distasteful! I am sure Kashyap had something in his mind so as to declare this the final one!
@Somnath
You don’t judge people by giving your own opinions and by being logical but through experience ,jab yahan PFC pe hi logon ko achha nahi laga poster then what can you say about the other junta.
Its only fair to have an artist present the way he wants. An artist should make the audience like what he intends to be liked about his work. I also know that Howard Roark is a figment of Rand’s imagination and that he is too ideal to be real but there is got to be some creative integrity that the artist needs to stick with.
@Sreehari: Not apologizing at all, it’s just that I felt I shouldn’t have used the word ‘concept’ since I have no idea what exactly the concept is. My view on the poster stands as it is. And posters are a big deal for me- in fact I loathe the fact that the Indian film industry doesn’t place enough importance on them and passes off shabbily juxtaposed ‘glamorous’ pictures of stars as posters. I wish they tried to be more imaginative. In that sense I appreciate the efforts of the team behind this one, but sadly it hasn’t been realised well at all.
@anurag
i guess dev.D will not make any money
All the critics will bash you and people will forget you and avoid your cinema
a lot of people on pfc will praise you left right and center and compare you to david lynch or darren afronsky or someone
you will right a very randlike-post where you defend yourself saying how you make films for yourselves screw the critics etc
BUT there is a huge community who waits your cinema eagerly… i am one of them
please continue making the films you make
and when the hell is Quick gun murugan releasing
can any1 tell me that ?
poster is very similar with No Smoking. AK i was expecting something new from you.
great innovation
Can some plz provide the wallpaper/image of the wall-painting(full) which was there in Dev’s room in movie.
I have these two but if someone have better than these ??
