DEV.D : The trailer is here!

Tauba tera jalwa
Tauba tera pyaar
Tera emotional atyachaar
YES IT IS, but before we move on to that, allow me to inflict upon thee some “emotional atyachaar“!
Love it or hate it, No Smoking has been one of the most discussed and debated film all over the blogosphere for the last one year, and continues to be so and Anurag Kashyap is here to stay. And if the trailer of his latest film is anything to go by, the stay is going to be a rocking affair for film buffs around India.
DEV.D, based on characters from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic Devdas is as far detached from the book as the characters are from sainthood. In Anurag Kashyap’s own words he has used Devdas as an adjective and not as a work of literature or cinema; it’s a look at relationships through the phenomenon that is Devdas.
Abhay Deol, who also came up with the idea for the story takes the role of Dev.D, a smart-talking, cocaine-sniffing alcoholic. His two muses in the film, played by the debutants Mahi Gill as Paro and Kalki as Chanda along with a host of new characters that is to be introduced in the film.
The other high point of the film being the music by Amit Trivedi, the man behind the music of Aamir. He deserved every bit of praise bestowed on him by the critics for the music of Aamir, and if the music in the trailer is any indication he is going to surpass his previous venture by miles this time. the album consisting of 15 songs including a couple of Punjabi tracks, a romantic Rajasthani folk track and even an Awadhi number is going to be an experience to savor, but more on that when the music releases.
The 2mins 25 sec long trailer takes us to Kashyap’s dystopian world giving us random glimpses of Dev (looking stoned, distraught, devastated and occasionally bored), along with the introduction of the two main characters Chanda and Paro. A feel of Tarantino being merged with Punjab, a Desi feel with an international ‘texture’ underneath it.
Anyways, enough bug-bug for now. Presenting to you- the trailer of DEV.D. Enjoy, and have a psychedelic orgasm!

requim for a dream meets david lynch meets michel gondry meets charlie kauffman!!!!! & god knows who else…
Anurag,
For me you were India’s David Lynch when you made “No Smoking”. I tried to hate it but I couldnt. I tried to love it but I couldnt but it kept me thinking about the movie for months together. I have never thought about a movie and its philosophical metaphors so much.I still cant cease to think about the movie in my head.
And now you are India’s Tarantino to have made this beautiful piece of pastiche called Dev.D.
i am already humming …
tauba tera jalwa tauba tera pyar …
tera emotional attyachar …
loved it ..cant wait for the music
@Ricky: Trust me I had not seen your post and i thought I was the first. Both of us thought of Lynch at the same time w.r.p Anurag. What are the odds!
well…well…it looks like an european cinema..I think i would better watch Bimal Roy’s Devdas!!….
@ ricky for some strange reason the promo reminded me too of Requiem for a Dream…
anyways it does excite me to watch the film…the purpose of the promo is achieved…good luck for the release …looking forward
Am just taking it the sheer pleasure and absorbing it… wah, wah… I love the title logo… My day is made!!!
It didn’t feel like Requiem to me- I mean that is how many films show drug induced trips…
I watched this amazing trailer on the big screen here in NYC. It preceded – of all things – the film “Fashion”. Needless to say, it was the best thing about the evening, but I digress…
Anyway, I absolutely loved “No Smoking” for its darkness and the absurdity of the story. No other director could have taken his characters on such a journey and actually keep his audience spellbound all through it! But “Dev D.” looks even more amazing, fascinating and dark. I can’t wait for its release. And the trailer truly rocks!
january 9th kab aayega….emotional atyachar
fatte hai …….
if the trailer is anything to go by..the music and the film are gonna be outrageous……
eagerly awaited…………..
by the way…whoever coined…emotional atyachar….great job..
David Lynch in Mumbai, with an Indian backdrop. Well for now we can truly claim Anurag Kashyap as apna Lynch.
I like ‘Chanda’s Intro.
Hui… bui….
After this Lynch game, will I and audience like me be allowed to watch a film directed by Anurag Kashyap without remembring David Lynch or any other name making films for many years in other part of world?
Parallel Lynchian universe should not make a cross section at a purely hindi film
New can have potential to go beyond the old.
Tera Emotional atyachar!!! great line… can’t wait for the music to come out.
Love it!!!!
.. Madly Love it!!!..
@8. Jahan. Yes. I guess thats how all drug induced trips are made.
What The Effff…
Man. I just love it… When is it releasing…?
And ‘emotional atyachar’… toooo good…
heheheheh…..damn SEXY!!! aur sex bhi hai…..aur kya chahiye…the trailor promises exactly what the film delivers…hit hai ji phillum hit hai!….m waiting for song promo….yeh meri zindagi hai……..
Trailer did not work for me. Hopefully the movie does. Big fan of your work Anurag.
@avik
its releasing on 9th jan
I donno y but it remembers me of TRAINSPOTTING
I can’t see the trailer. Fuck ^ infinity, is Mozilla to blame?
no. your filter blocks at work seem to be working great. youtube is blocked by your network admin
Just one word .. wow !
@ Oz:
might be true, right nw i’m in my lab..lol…! btw, is it on you tube?!
Yes. here.
Boy oh boy! doesn’t remind me of Requiem at all, but still packs a punch in its own way, m waiting so desperately for OLLO, and something says he is going to deliver. For the aam junta, i sincerly hope this movie is a tad accessible for them, and then only we could see the hape wave that Kashyap, Bhardwaj.co are trying to bring. Kudos to UTV for sheltering the new tide in Indian cinema. These are better times, or so I would liek to believe.
OLLLO, he was in reference to the lead of Dev D., Abhay Deol.
Anurag sirji aap great ho. this is the most awaited movie for me. rocking promo i’ve ever seen. jaldi release karo movie.
Looks too much like Trainspotting + Requiem for a Dream. Original by Bollywod standards.
The movie will struggle @ the B.O. with the “cool” looking teenage-targeted flick Paathshaala out on 9th Jan and the ultra “commercial” Chandni Chowk to China a week later.
I heart “emosanal atyachar”
When is the music coming out?
I didn’t see Lynch, Kauffman or Gondry; in this Trailer,
It is pure ‘Anurag Kashyap’ touch,
Quirky, (sahi hai!!!)
Why do you guys compare things always?
@Gosh!!
it looks awesome, and yup lyrics are cool, crisp and saucy!! he he…
Dev.D seems like a man in his own imaginary world!! Waiting for 13th Jan!! Marked the DATE in google calendar!!
@did i see Abhay deol in Elvis getup , with a duplicate of SRK!! on dias!!
interesting composition!!
yeh hui na baat…shaabash…
shaadi ka band. dilli ki bus. aukaat.
tauba tera jalwa. aankhon ka hai dhokha, aisa tera pyaar.
tera emotional atyachaar.
rhymes with bewdi.
jai ho.
This is exactly the song that captures the spirit of the movie for me! Great trailer! Phuntashtic!
There is a unique sense of duality in the trailer. At one end the scenes are as normal as can be and at the other end whenever Dev is high, the tepid albeit harnessing visuals kick in. In short, as engrossing as it can be.
Can I please have a copy of the soundtrack in advance? :D
Mannnnnnnnnnnnnn this is awesomeee….Abhay rules…anurag roxxx
this trailer did remind me of requiem for a dream — the shots with the camera attached to the body, and then abhay screaming with his face immersed in water are very reminiscent of a couple of scenes with jennifer connelley in aaronofsky’s classic.
that being said, it’s still a great trailer, with amazing soundtrack. this is definitely going to be a good movie.
papaji, that shot(sousveillance I believe) was there in No Smoking too, when K comes out of Prayogshala.
awesomeeee…seems like itz gonna be a nice trip….waitin….
Trailer was one the best I have ever seen in Bollywood ,but parts of it do look like a No Smoking ,I just hope that the movie entertains .
Is it just me or does the Paro look like Tabu from Maqbool?
geez cant get this trailer out of my mind..have seen it more than 20 times and still wanna watch it one more time…Anurag…you have nailed it…awesome
Hell yeah!!!
Will buy the dvd of this one too. Way to go, Anurag.
Whats with the comparision with Requiem..every narco movie and a bit of camera work cant make it look similar…a trip is a trip..the trip cannot vary..it ought to look the same..lol…someone will say..its like fear and loathing in las vegas..come on guys!!
Heard a lot about this movie!!!Good luck to Anurag and his team.
Trailer is amazing… but the song man!!! What brilliance!!! All the more power to Amit Trivedi. The final part of the song with all the riffs and beats is really awesome. Jan 9th is like so far off man. Gee… Can’t wait for it. Who has a time machine?
I just have one thing to tell.
Mr. Kashyap you’ve done the impossible.
I’m actually waiting for the movie and music.
The movie may finally do justice to Devdas, which was so cruelly tortured by Shah Rukh Khan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas.
I really hope you will get your conviction right, as you’ve in Black Friday and No Smoking.
Piyush Bhageria.
amazing promo. spellbindnig stuff.
had a psychedelic orgasm!
jaldi release karo sirji…!
bhansali will certainly be pissed. LOL.
The only BIG problem is Abhay deol itself. He was perfect in Manorama. But here he is looking a “Cut & paste jobe”. By the way ‘Emotional atyachar’ is a nice experiment.
Ok, the idea came from abhay.
Its like. If Sunny deol thought off a film
On Gandhi/Charlie Chaplin/ m Jackson and want to do the lead role.
@ Anurag K., With all due respect to No Smoking, I serioulsy didnt like the film. I might not have understood it also unless I was reading about it everyday on PFC. However, I only have the highest of respect for your creativty and courage.
I wish you all the best for Dev D and hope that it gives you all the success you deserve. and I also hope that I understand the film.
“Ek, Do, Teen, Chaar, Chhay(?)”
‘Paanch’ excluded intentionally?
tauba tera jalwa taubaa teraa pyaaar…teeerraa emosanalllll aatyaachaarr…i wannna music release man. like ASAP
Can anybody plz download the video and mail it to me..
office mei no YOUTUBE :-(
Once again great promo. when that scene comes where elvis says loudly 1 2 3 4 6 6 6 6 it gives me feeling of “Takashi Miike”. its like i am wtaching promo of some of his movie. but really a great work Anurag.
Im feeling an awesome dope experience here…
Films sounds n luks too crude, will it suit to our well mannered indian public.
Anyways i have respect for UTV and im sure they r gonna fucking count thier fortune on this shit…we have to taste this n i welcome movies like dis which r not only diff but crazy too………
Comeone man we need a break n im sure Mr Anurag is da one n only crazy nut who can satisfy us. (I left hopes on RGV, hes playing too safe!!! bloddy hell)
Absolutely brilliant promo.
I am convinced that this time both AK and AD will show bollywood what they are capable of.
@abhijit(59)..good point!..very good point
Nawabi Saand, watch Clockwork Orange and Kubrick’s other films- he is one helluva genius filmmaker… lemme see what you are talking about though…
Someone plz supply me oxygen..Out of breath..
Wot was that!!!! the most intriguing promo ever!!! it hit me like a brick, its 6 in the morning and an awesome start to the day, man!!!!! anurag u effin made my day
Nothing is original. Everything… you, yourself and your existence is a sum of inspirations and your interpretations of these inspirations.
Anurag: When people hate No Smoking, they hate it with passion. They write pages on why it doesn’t work. They compare with Kafka’s K, they talk about how it deviates from Lynch or they’d critically dissect k’s character in the movie. Do you get the compliment? You can only hate something so fervently only when it moves you as much.
Wow. Interesting Promo.
“emotional atyachar” hahaha…..the music n especially this word is goin in my mind ever since i saw the trailer
cant wait for the movie to release
“first day first show” man….reserved it frm now :-)
Amit Trivedi has given some gr8 and apt music for Aamir. i m sure he’ll do the same with DEV.D
maaan!!this seems superb!!!
FUNtastic ! romantic…dark…and funny….what a dish! Papaji…aapke ‘EMOSIONAL’ ATYACHAR ki Jai Ho !
I shall wait for this movie to be released and watch it before I even think about it. I would like to see what Mr. kashyap has done with the story of Devdas and what his view provides me that I do not already know. The trailer does look interesting…
@Jehan,
Can you tell me what is that exquisite about Clockwork Orange? It seemed a very simple and straightforward movie to me.
!! WOOT !!
Lucky Oye…. and Dev.D …. both with Abhay Deol.
… he’s one under-rated actor in BWood. and my personal fav.
can’t wait to watch both of them.
The trailer looks like a No smoking hangover. Credit to UTV spotboy for agreeing to make it. Frankly, I cannot imagine this movie to be liked by even the “multiplex audience” forget masses. Though it has the potential to become an international cult.
Best of luck, AK. Hope Gulaal comes close to what you did with Black Friday.
No smoking was 100 times better than OSO
as for the trailer all i have to say is BRILLIANT
keep it up AK when there seem no hope for bollywood people like u, vishawl bhardwaaj etc provide some hope
as for abahy deol here’s an actor who is keep doing quality work
OLLO and DEV D both seem like great movies
@ Sarang (#76)
I guess you watched A Clockwork Orange only once, if you did. Otherwise you’ll never call such a layered movie as simple and straightforward.
Check this out…a different POV on A Clockwork Orange.
http://rant-avenue.blogspot.com/2007/03/boomerrrang.html
@Narcissist
Thanks for the link. It is an interesting post. I liked it.
The Karma/Boomerang theoty is simplicity in its essence. If you make it a big deal, it becomes a big deal.
Dismissing your assumption on me and the number of times I have seen the movie, I shall still stand by my view of it. It is simple and straightforward.
BTW.. who is the lyrist for Dev.D.. is it Gulzaar Saab
??
synonyms of mind-blowing.
whose cut it? and whose written the lyrics??? could u enlighten pls jahan
Hope this works and may we restore faith in anurag as driector.
Trailor looked funny , and yes has some traces of No smoking, but the lyris ” emotional atyaachar”… thts interesting …. what i know ,its not Gulzaar saab ? I might be wrong too.
and good to c Abhay Deo, not follwing the crowd and experimenting with interesting movies..!! He is one of my favs and i wish he gets more and more different movies on hi CV and excel in that too..
btw , after No smoking, i am excited, curious for Dev.D and ready to challegne my intellect and intelligence .. he he
tis classy fucking anurag kashyap
nice colour scheme and nice music its quite cool
but seriously dont expect to make any money out of this…its quite likely to be going the no smoking way
btw anurag im starting to sense something like a tim burton=depp partnership in the making
please make a LOT of movies soon
BTW why is AK so fascinated by Smokers and drug addicts ……first Paanch ,then No Smoking ,and now DEV D .
Ramadoss will surely target Anurag for this ;-)
@vineet
cause he smokes and hes one of those objectivists or whatever
anyways
anurag the sound in the bus scene is too low some finetuning o nthe sound mightb e needed
Thanks guys. This one isn’t complicated. It’s a musical with a kickass soundtrack of 15 original songs and then some soundtracks. Lyrics of emotional atyachar are by a new singer lyricist Amitabh who along with Amit Trivedi has sung most songs. They both sing the brass band EA and the rock version is sung by bonny.
great promo …but one interesting point i showed this promo to couple of peers at office who doesnt know anything about lynch ,requim et al,and they said… what the fuck ?
When is the music releasing ?
I actually like the second part. All those fast paced editing… Too good. Who is the singer by the way?
He is just too good.
Also, I am seeing too much of Abhay these days… kya ho raha hai bhai?
OMFG! Just saw the trailor and what the hell! Looks GREAT. Really looking forward to the movie… and the music…
‘WOW’ is indeed the word for the trailor.
@Sarang: Yeah, it was perhaps ’simple and straightforward’ as you say so. But I thought the acting was superlative and the direction, production design and visuals were amazingly imaginative and brilliant, in a way they can only be in Kubrick’s films. The dystopian fantasy portrayed in the film is truly terrifying and I found it a great achievement that the writer and director manage to make a tragic hero out of the protagonist who is almost an embodiment of evil. Also works wonderfully as an acerbic satire on society and human nature. Though I admit all the talk of the shock value and violence in the film, left me a little underwhelmed with that aspect. Electrifying stuff, nevertheless.
@Nawabi Saand: Yaar Delhi mein to I don’t know- you get them pirated here in Calcutta, though not too many titles and quality can be dicey… but a friend of mine gets them from Bangladesh (@ 40 bucks each!) and they have excellent quality, so I borrow movies from him. See if you can get them from a DVD library like Cinema Paradiso or something. Or come over to Calcutta and I’ll make sure you get your dose of Kubrick Magic! Unfortunate that original and uncensored titles aren’t available legally and widely in India.
@ Jahan – Bhai, Calcutta mein Kubrick ki filmon ki pirated CDs/ DVDs kahan milti hain? I have been looking for them in Cal but havent found them…
btw Clockwork Orange is present on google video
@sophocles,
if you get to the jadavpur area, ask for Sangam CD parlour(or Babluda’s CD shop). You get the best of the world cinema (just name it) DVDs, 80 bucks each.
blew my minds off
any chance this one’s gonna come out in one piece out of the Censor board
would love to get my hands on the unedited version
Intresting!!! But i pray to god, its nt another “NO SMOKING”.
There’s a lot of smoke in this trailer…
Actually, i m waiting to see sumthing soon from “Gulaal”
Anyways, for DEV.D, Best Of Luck to Anurag and his Team…
Regards,
Good luck AK! The song kicks ass! And the promo looks promising!
Psychedelic orgasm indeed!!!!
Fabulous!!
I’ve ALWAYS raved about ‘No Smoking’ and still maintain that it takes guts to make that kinda cinema.
Really looking forward to this!
Abhay Deol is a gem anyway, so I was planning on seeing it just for him.
But now?? Eagerly awaiting!
Thats song gets under your skin!!
Make sure the film comes to the U.K guys!!!
@Jahan (#97)
Thanks for the reply. With regards to acting in the movie, I felt it was a lot more theatrical than ‘original’. It might have been to mimic a certain milieu as imagined by the director and the writer and I do not have anything against it. I agree that technically, this movie is wonderful. One cannot miss the Kubrick touch in any of his movies. And yes, I love the satirical mood of this movie.
What I do not agree to, is the seemingly “tragic portrayal” that you have mentioned. I never felt so. At no point of time is the lead character remoresful or repugnant on his actions. Yes he cries and even seems lost after facing the reactions when he is out of prison but he reamins an opportunist all the while. So is everyone else.
All the violence and excesses is just superfluous and once you disregard all that, what you see is a very straightforward (sic!) presentation. Which is why, it may seem to be lenghtier than what it is.
I think this is one of Kubrick’s weaker (sic!) movies. He is way better when it comes to handling character depth and human emotions at a personal level.
How can anyone get Lynch and Kubrick from a trailer guys?
I believe the trailer should be taken at its own merit. Lynch and Kubrick cannot be ‘got’ from their complete movie even… a lot of thinking goes into ‘getting’ it even after watching the movie… I say Requiem, alright. Just coz of that camera bound to the face of the actor. But others, well I beg to differ.
@Sarang: I agree with some of the points you make, but I don’t think it really diminishes its brilliance for me. Still, I did like The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut (even though some went over my head) more than this. Hoping to catch more of Kubrick soon.
As for the tragic portrayal. that is exactly the point I’m making- despite the fact that ‘at no point of time is the lead character remoresful or repugnant on his actions’ and that he remains an ‘opportunist all the while’, I personally was feeling sorry for him and was still rooting for him. So was everyone else seeing the film with me.
But I guess different people are bound to react differently to a film- that’s the beauty of the movies.
@Jahan
I am sure the other movies of Kubrick will be worth the ride. Have fun!
great trailer, great song….unfortunately, the visuals still seem inspired by aronovsky and lynch….. nothing like tarantino though…and thts a relief….but when are indian directors gonna sop taking references from hollywoood???…this ones no different….it just chose its “inspiration” a bit more carefully…..the visuals in the trailer wreak of requiem for a dream……hopefully the story line is original…(as in …no unmentioned “inspirations”)
Hi Anurag,
Please make sure that you don’t leave any of the Promo designs just to the Marketing guys…whether it is posters, handouts, trailers… Get involved and make sure that whatever is shown is a reflection of the film…and your thoughts on how the film is perceived by you…
Looking forward to the New Year…
my only worry now is the censor board screwin it up…hopefully wid UTV backing d project they might pass it without cuts…or the film already may have received the certificate from d censor board…have dey??
oye too good,am waiting for this one!
Tauba tera jalwa

this is truly awesome!what a great way to start new year!better after closing it with all the rab ne bana di types……..i really need to thank ronnie screw walla for this…otherwise anurag wouldn’t be so comfy!
I see a lot of ‘no smoking’ in this. the movie will be indecipherable to the junta, deliberated on endlessly by pseudo-intellectuals, thrashed by critics and inconsequential at the BO. I would say 3.5 cr of business in 2 weeks. bets invited.
amazing camera monents… the trailer has served its objective i am dyin to watch it fuckin too good … looks like … AK will take indian cinema to the global platform..
man i’m a big fan of Abhay Deol but the trailer+song combo almost made me orgasm! lol… just superb
This is the worst news hope its not true.
http://filmikhabar.com/2008/11/13/panic-attack/
I think its alright. These dark, druggy, thick smoky air kind of films are not my thing at all..
I dont know if the people here are so lavishly praising it only because its PFC. And honestly, am not too sure about how good or bad it would be. I really hope its not self indulgent, which I though NS was. I know I will face a lot of flak here with all the fans of these kinds of films and of AK on PFC, but honestly, I really really hope to see the Anurag that I saw in BF. What a film that was! It is my fear, and I hope that i am wrong, is that AK might just be self indulgent in this film.. Fingers crossed!
Some thoughts that came to my mind after watching the trailors were: 1. Looks like requime for a dream. After reading the comments ..i was sure that i am not the only one. 2. Will it be / wont it be a depressing movie?
@ arti….
I can guess what your fears are, but i think someone like AK has to be self indulgent. U wont get a steady streamline of very watchable movies from guys like AK, RGV and likes… but somehow they manage to pull one amazing piece of CINEMA….
even in the not so good movies, they some truly masterpieces.
RGV’s Nishabd is a case in point.
DEV.D looks good, hope for the best!!!
Aarti, I can’t speak for everyone else, but i’m genuinely excited about this whole concept of a modern adaptation of Devdas.
Besides, Abhay makes some very interesting choices.
Add to that, the imagery and music are quite a lethal combo.
As for self indulgent directors?
Well, I guess there’s a very thin line between self indulgency and a directors stamp.
At times it’ll work, and at others it won’t.
well well talking about self indulgence
how come no one from media points a finger at Mr Karan Johar specailly his recent Dostana was work of self indulgence
why he treats KKHH like it was some masterpiece
also i think some section of media/industry will want this movie to fail
and yes there are people who ate up any yash raj crap but they avoid movies like this because it is too “dark and brooding”
i guess most people prefer srk wrestling a sardar sumo wrestler in the name of entertainment!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, this is my bhua’s film , i wish her and all the crew good luck for the movie.
Neone coming to Artesia to watch the movie…Lets meet i possible
Hey, when’s the ‘Twilight Players’ act comin out?
eagerly waiting…
I’ve been watching the trailer again and again, I can’t wait for this to come out. Abhay is a really good actor, loved him in Manorama and Lucky. I loved No Smoking, too. I think the comparisons to “Requiem” are bound to come because of the stylized scenes of drug use. I really hope the censors don’t fuck this up for us.
I love the “Emotional Atyachar” song, shaadi ka band + tinge of hardcore punk = awesome. Music release, jaldiiii.
So far so good. If the movie lives upto what we`ve all seen, its definitely gonna ring some bells `n whistles.
