Amitabh, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna : : Remake of Shaukeen (1981)

Amitabh Bachchan has already been appeared in 5 films during the first six months of 2007 and no wonder he may appear in 5 more films in the rest 6 months. Among his contemporaries he is the only actor whose acting career is still enjoying so active phase.

Recently Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna also have been able to show their presence in films released in the first half of the year 2007. Both the actors have shown promises and have proved that they have not lost their calibre, command over the craft and hunger to perform better.

Such comebacks are welcomed as they may open new vistas in hindi cinema. Leave alone exceptions but on an average hindi cinema has been shying away in making films dealing with aged people in lead roles.

These capable and still popular actors may start a new and matured phase in Hindi cinema. There is no reason why film industry should not exploit their true potentials?

They need subjects and films like Shaukeen provide that ground.

Shaukeen (1981) :-

Director : Basu Chaterjee , Music : RD Burman,

Basu Chaterjee had directed this comedy film dealing with the adventures, catalysed by their fantasies, of three old characters, Om Prakash Chaudhary, Inder Sen and Jagdish Bhai.

Ashok Kumar, plays an old man, Om Prakash Chaudhary, who usually spends his time at home. He has a homely wife but she is always busy in attending religious meetings and/or making pilgrimages. O P Chaudhary is old but he has not lost his desire to have fantasies about young women. He never misses the chance to watch a young woman who passes daily through his house and he comes to the window of his room to take some pleasure through eyes. His glances don’t even leave young female servant. Whenever he is in the good mood and is happy he sings a song, ( sung so beautifully by Kishor Kumar ) Jab Bhee koi kangana bole man machal machal jaye re (Whenever bangles are rattled, my heart gets naughty feelings).
This song plays all over the film whenever O P Chaudhary is alone and is involved in his imaginations. O P C is not physically very strong and suffers from few diseases but this factor has not diminished his desire to have an affair with a young woman. He becomes very happy when his wife says that she would go to make pilgrimage. He sees great opportunity to have fun along with his old friends Inder and Jagdish.

A.K.Hangal , plays smart old man Inder Sen. He is a widower. He is still active in his business activities and his friends OP Chaudhary and Jagdish, envy him whenever they see him with his young and pretty secretaries, who are changed frequently by him. First time AK Hangal had dealt with a full fledged comedy based role and he gave tough competition to Ashok Kumar and Utpal Dutt like master comedians. He is a surprise element in this film.

Utpal Dutt, plays Jagdish who is either divorcee or widower like his friend Inder. Every month, Jagdish goes to collect house rent from a widow and tries to stay as long as he can and he searches opportunities to somehow touch that lady.

When wife of Chaudhary goes away to make pilgrimage then all the three friends decide that this is real opportunity to have some fun and they think that in this city its difficult and in an unknown city it w’d be easy. First they think about going to Khandala and they hire a driver, Ravi, who convinces them that Goa is a much better option and its a nice place and they should go there.

Mithun Chakravorty, plays Ravi, who is an unemployed man and during hard times he accepts temporary job of a driver and as his girl friend Anita (Rati Agnihotri) works in Goa, he convinces his employer and his friends to make a trip to Goa so that he can reach there before Anita’s birthday.

Old men see Anita in a club where she is a dancer and they think she is the right girl with whom they can try their luck.

What happens next is the cause to create laugh among audience. Young hearts of these old men encourage them to see dreams and seek adventures but their frail bodies bring gravitational forces for their desires and when they come back on earth they realise what they were going to do?

They pretend to correct their wrong deeds by becoming altruists.

Each of them takes oath that he will not live a lustful life. But after coming back to Bombay audience find Ashok Kumar ogling again at the young woman passing through his house while enjoying the song
Jab bhee koi kangana bole

Old habits die hard!!!!

This is a film of old actors Ashok Kumar, A.K Hangal and Utpal Dutt and Mithun Chakravorty and Rati Agnihotri are in supporting roles. It was an easy role for Mithun. Rati Agnihotri’s role has no shade and she had no difficulty in playing such simple role.

RD Burman gives pleasant music and songs are sung beautifully by Asha Bhonsle, Kishor Kumar and Suresh Wadekar.

I don’t know if it was remake of some Hollywood film or was a remake of some Indian regional language film but it was a good comedy film and it’s a treat to watch three old actors competing each other to bring out their best .

* * * *
Film was good and old actors did very good job. But considering their physical aspects such stories fit more on the actors who keep bettrer physical fitness. Such stories can be shown again. Though Inder Kumar had tried to remake such film with insertion of a murder mystery in his comedy film Masti but that’s no where close to Shaukeen.

Though all the three actors Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna may play any role in the film but its not irrelevant to see them in following roles:

Amitabh Bachchan will be perfectly fit in the role of Om Prakash Chaudhary and he can give different touches to the role and can bring entirely different performance than Ashok Kumar.

Vinod Khanna will be very good in the role of suave, smart business man Inder Sen. His portrayal of Inder Sen will definitely be different than A K Hangal’s Inder Sen.

And Dharmendra may do wonders in the role of Jagdish, which was played by Utpal Datt. Here I recall ManMohan Desai?s Dharam Veer. For some scenes Dharmendra had opted get up of a fortune teller there and he had brought a performance which is required for the role of Jagdish.

Dharmendra has that capacity to make role entirely of his own. This role gives him full opportunity to exercise his comedy skills again.

If this film is remade with these three actors, this may start a new chapter in the current hindi cinema.

All those people who are looking for a break can take RK’s suggestion and comeup with a script/screenplay and look for a producer.

OR better yet come-up with a Original bound script/screenplay and submit it to Subhash Ghai’s Mukta Arts and win 1 crore (RS. 10 Million).

Sorry. Forgot to mention that 1 Crore for a script if your script is selected. :)

RK - great idea for a remake… I’ve always thought why remake films that people still remember so vividly (ie Sholay, Amar Akbar Anthony)… the public will never accept the new film as being even remotely as good as the original…

But a film like “Shaukeen” could work wonders. The same theme, slightly different characterizations, and different situations. A perfect recipe.

Great suggestion RK bhai… lage raho!

    Shawshank:

Not sure if many on this site would agree with me or not (lemme know!), but I actually like Subhash Ghai as a producer. For every big commercial film such as “Aitraaz” and “Shaadi Se Pehle” he’s done, he’s also produced unique, small budget films like “Rahul”, “Joggers Park” & of course “Iqbal”.

I’ll admit, I’d personally love to have a film release under the Mukta Arts banner, if for no other reason than to have the “Karz” theme music play just before the credits roll…

BUT, despite this, I think this 1crore contest is more of a marketing ploy for Whistling Woods than anything else. My prediction is that a WW student “wins” the contest and is promoted as the next big writer, an innovative way to launch and market a new Mukta Searchlight low-budget feature.

Don’t expect an outsider to actually get a shot like this.

    Tony Mera Naam,
You are probably right. This could be just a ploy for next academic season for his school, but lets see who wins it and lets hope that its a genuine effort to look for new talents.

So I would say first register your script with the scriptwriters association or the governing body whatever that is before submitting . Just in case, so they dont steal your idea and claim it theirs.

Yeah good advice. Are you planning to submit a script? I wonder if anyone from PFC will submit a script?

Remember ‘Ye Wo Manzil to Nahin’?.. Could well be a brilliant script for the three.. Reuniting and getting back in action as angry old men… Shiney for Pankaj Kapoor’s role and Irfan/KK as Raja Bundela.. and Naseer (still)/Anupam/Pankaj can enact the VC…

    Sudhir ji Are You Listening?

I remember seeing a similar Malayalam movie. The three old men were played by Madhu, Bharath Gopi and Late Karamana Janardhanan Nair. Mithun`s character played by Nedumudi Venu.! Was a nice movie. Don`t quite know Shaukeen was a remake, but I remember enjoying the movie script`s twists and turns.!

  9. RK on July 4th, 2007 2:43 am

Tony: you are right, remakes of less known films can work as comparison factor is weak there. and films like Shaukeen, can be improved through beteer screen play and better editing. One can save him from following drawbacks in the older film.

and major point is to utilize skills of AB, Dharamendra and Vinod Khannaa. If they come in forefront then some money will be utilized on quality films. And as they have to be active in the films then why not create stories for them rather than to cast them just in useles roles of patriarch or in guest appearances to create illusion of nostalgia?
    They deserve better treatment.

Hope Subhash Ghai’s scheme works for new script writers and some exprienced script writer is not selected!

Ye Wo Manjil to Nahin has been covered on PFC. http://passionforcinema.com/ye-wo-manzil-to-nahin/

I dont know if remaking his own movie will fall in category of progress for Sudhir Mishra. But as it was his first film as a director and if thinks that he missed something and his today’s maturity can bring more material in the film, then its a good story to be shown with new cast.

  11. RK on July 4th, 2007 2:50 am

Srijith: you have seen both so you know whether malalyalam film is remake of Hindi Shaukeen or its other way round.:)

  12. Minhaj on August 29th, 2008 12:37 am

No,I dont think a cast of such Megatars will work.
This can be a low budget film with Aupam Kher as Indersen,Qader Khan as Jagdish Bhai and Amitabh / vinod Khanna as Omprakash Chaudhary.
For the role of Mithun and Rati,Ritesh Deshmukh and Mallika can be a best combination.

  13. Rk on August 29th, 2008 2:50 am

    @Minhaj,
With the cast you are quoting, film will certainly be low budget and will be low in quality also.
What Anupam Kher can do in a sensitive role, because there he brings a psychological depth, he has never been able to do in comedy. His comedy remains on surface only. Perhaps his mind does not work that way or he does not feel it necessary to go deeper in a comedy role. whatever is the case his past work does not suggest that he is as good an actor in comedy roles as he is in sensitive roles.
His comedy efforts dont touch audience but they can still be moved by his performance in a sensitive role. He was even better in villaneous roles (Karma, Kala Dhandha Gore Log, Arjun etc) then his comedy efforts in many many films.
No big complain. every actor has a range and area where he works better than other areas.

If carricatures and not characters are needed then this cast can work.
With these characters, writers have to work very hard to create magic with dialogues. means dialogues should be extra funny and crispy because these actors can not support the Ok dialogues with performance on a psychological level.

I just watched “Righteous Kill” with veterans Al Pacino & Robert De Niro great movie about two older cops.

They should make a remake of this movie with Dharmendra & Amitabh. If they do make this movie it will be a super duper hit for both veterans!!!!

  15. Rk on October 1st, 2008 2:52 am

    @Sukhit,
Hollywood has always been making films with veteran actors.
Only Hindi cinema is lagging behind. But recently it has picked up few chances to present cinema through these oldies.
