Dhool ka Phool => Tamanna - Mr Bhatt, how Pooja Bhatt had got admission in School
Time was different when Dhool ka Phhool (1959) was released. Films were different, writings were different, lyrics were different and values were different.
Dhool ka Phool covers the pathos of the life of a child who was abandoned by his mother because her lover made her pregnant but did/could not marry her.
Rajendra Kumar sings a good song Tere Pyar ka Asra Chahta hun to allure Mala Sinha and Mala Sinha also responds him through her singing.
She accepts his love and soon they enjoy being in love and sing
Nature has to play its role and their intimacy is resulted in to her pregnancy. But Rajendra Kumar surrenders before his father’s desires and does not marry Mala Sinha. He, instead, marries a rich girl Nanda chosen by his father, leaving behind pregnant Mala Sinha alone.
Unwed, pregnant Mala Sinha is shown the exit from the house of her uncle also.
She gives birth to a baby boy but abandons her son and leaves him in the forest.
Denge wahi jo payenge is zindagi se hum…. ?
Manmohan Krishna, a muslim, finds the crying boy and takes him with him and raises him.
Film’s creative team- writer Pt Mukh Ram Sharma, director Yash Chopra and lyricist Sahir Ludhianavi, was sensible and ideal enough to show Man Mohan Krishna singing
Tu Hindi Banega na Musalman Banega
Insaan ki aulad hai Insaan banega.
He wants to raise his adopted son as a human being first and religion of the child does not matter to him.
But world is never kind and people don’t want him to raise so easily an illegitimate child.
Life is not easy for the child and he grows up facing bitter sarcasm and pinching abuses thrown by other people on his innocent childhood.
Eventually he is allured by Mohan Chhoti who is involved in the criminal activities like pick pocketing and stealing etc. Mohan Choti introduces the boy also in to the crimes and one day police catches the boy.
Irony of time, Boy is produced in the court where Rajendra Kumar serves as the judge and Jagdeesh Raj, present husband of Mala Sinha, is the public prosecutor and both the gentlemen think that such criminals, who do crimes at such a younger age, should be given severe punishment so that others take lesson.
Defense lawyer Ashok Kumar brings the bitter truth behind the boy’s life before the Judge and now social and real culprits behind the ruined life of the boy are ashamed on their doings.
That was a film.
Then came Tamanna in 1997. A feudal man does not want a girl child in his home and when his wife delivers a girl then he orders his old maid servant to kill that girl child. Old lady takes new born girl with her but she did not kill her and leaves her in a garbage box.
A eunuch Paresh Rawal sees all this happening and he picks up the girl and soon he is unable to abandon her and he raises her as his own daughter.
The Girl is sent to a boarding school and she does not know the gender and occupation of her father. She gets to know these facts that he is not her real father and he is actually a eunuch who earns his livelihood by dancing.
She (Pooja Bhatt) searches her real father, who hates the idea that his daughter could be still alive and he tries to kill her.
That was also a film.
Both the above mentioned films were based on the fictions but similar things happened in real life also.
Somebody left her new born girl child in a garbage box in Surat. A poor man picked her up and he and his wife gave shelter to the unlucky child, who was clearly an unwanted child and whose parents had no courage to kill her themselves so they left her in the garbage as then they were spared from witnessing her death.
She could have been died because of lack of proper care at that early stage.
She could have been got noticed by someone and either people could have taken her to police or orphanage.
But it was also possible that she was picked up by a pimp and once grown up she could have become a prostitute.
But girl was not so unlucky either and she found a family and parents.
But again girl’s life can not be without difficulties. It is clear by considering the very initial conditions of her life that she has to face a lot of difficulties in the life.
She grew up and now it was the time for her parents to send her to a school. Her mother works as domestic help and her father must also be doing something like this. But couple have dreams for their adopted daughter.
Poor couple did not know the strict and cruel procedures of the society.
Schools in Surat did not give admission to the poor girl because she was not having a BIRTH CERTIFICATE.
Same society and same schools and same principals and heads of school societies might have shed tears and might have created noise if the same girl was picked up by a pimp and later her story was revealed to all but they could not respect the great doings of a poor couple when such a real case came before them.
It was not a big deal for any school to help the poor couple to do it through court’s affidavit but why schools should bother about these theoretical things? Teachers can teach ideal things mentioned in the books and that’s enough for them to carry a feel good emotion inside while going back to home.
Girl will surely get admission in some school but its strange to know the rotten mentality of schools.
It’s a shameful situation.
It had happened few years ago also when a school had expelled the girl soon after the death of her father. Father of that girl was notorious criminal Veerappan.
Why they gave her admission on first place if they had problem with her background?
Why they could not show bravery before Veerapan, when he was alive, and deny the admission to his daughter?
Why this sudden explosion of bravery once he was dead?
Schools are there to give good education to the kids and to make them good human beings but in reality schools are becoming places where only theoretical words are taught.
In case of this girl of Surat,
What DM of Surat is doing?
What CM of Gujarat is doing?
A couple who should be awarded for doing most noble of the works by adopting an abandoned girl child, is thrown before the bureaucratic difficulties.
A film is a film and in Tamanna, as per the set story Principal of the boarding did not ask Paresh Rawal to produce a birth certificate of Pooja Bhatt before she was given admission in the school.
It was easy for Mr Mahesh Bhatt to show on screen the life of an abandoned girl in her childhood but in real life such a child has to face a lot of bitter difficulties since the begining.

The girl is given admission. Its on CNN-IBN. I laud the Modi govt. for atleast trying to plug the hole instead of shirking the responsibility from one shoulder to another which is the usual modus operandi in govt circles regardless of which party is at the helm of the affairs(cheers to media too for bringing it to public notice).
i like tammanna..paresh rawal acted very well…
aradhna also had same story…sharmila tagore son is given 2 orhphanage becoz her lover rajesh khanna is died in accident…
sunil dutt humraj also had same story…raj kumar is died nd his son is given 2 orphanage nd heroine thinks she gave birth 2 dead child…
surat girl ll get admission but harm is already made by other schools…nd later by media…now she ll always b talk of school for wrong reasons nd may b her parents didnt want 2 disclose to her abt her real adoption story…
on 1 side media helped the cause but on other side by showing repeatedly her photos nd her parents photos they harmed her future also…
Hi Rk
Have been on pfc for some time now. I am here mostly as a passive reader and not an active contributor. It’s interesting to read various comments. Most of them are biased- one way or the other. Either hero worshipping or hero bashing. Just when i thought there were no meaningful blogs being posted, i came across yours. I must confess you have brought out the point in the most sincere manner and it was heart warming to read someone picking up right threads from various channels of communication and raising a social issue. I have a suggestion…why don’t you write a film based on the ordeal of the gujarat parent? A heartfelt, sincere and honest film. Not a pseudo art house film but something like doh bigha zameen. Realistic yet engaging. Cheers again to you. Good job!
Media got their fodder with this case but in a way it was good. But these things have been happening since ages…
I come from Rajasthan where abondaning a girl child used to be a norm than exception and it still is, in some parts of the state.
RK highlights problems of such a child growing up but there are a few cases where it all ends much before our so called ‘SAMAAJ’ starts creating problems for them.
I know of one such case in my native village where a newborn was put in a mud pot which was then wrapped tightly with a polythene and buried. No, this did not kill the child!!
There was a glimpse of luck for the child when a gang of dogs dug the pot out and a passerby happened to see it but by the time he could think of doing something…the tiny body became fodder for dogs…
BTW nice write up RKG…
“Honhaar beerbaan ke hot cheekney paat” I remember YOU saying this in one of your comments here almost an year ago!!
aur aaj yahi baat aap pe bilkul sateek baith-ti hai RK…
pehli hee film men aapne apne ‘paat’dikha diye
AAMIR dekhi… maza aa gaya!! bauhut badhiya!! commendable effort for a first timer!!
Dont stop blogging here bhai… let it be anything kyunki yeh to main note kar hee raha hun aapne apni film ke baare men abb takk chuppi banaye rakhi hai… jo ki ek tarah se shayad munasib hai…
Agli ka wait kar raha hun!!! aane do!!!
@Naren(5),
Thanks for your comment.
But here it is an identity mistaken case.
The man you are searching and who is culprit of making the film AAMIR, which you have liked immensely is RAJ KUMAR GUPTA and I have no association with Aamir or any other film.
You may shower your praises directly to any post written by Raj Kumar or any Aamir related post! Then chances are more that he reads your comment.
BTW you may see Raj Kumar’s profile here

Incidently I have not been able to even see the AAMIR.
@Naren(4),
Terrific incident you shared with us. A Schocking one.
Since you belong to Rajsthan, and must be knowing the details behind such a cruel human behaviour, what is the story behind this. Any Idea if there are clues which go beyond the Islamic attacks in middle ages?
@Manoj (3),
Thanks for your kind comment. In PFC archive you may find many posts and subsequent discussions which may satisfy your personal taste.
Sometimes some event reminds some old film made on similar event and this reminder enhance the longevity of that film and tells about creative team associated with that film. They had some substance thats why we can recall their film and can correlate with present event.
Cant say about in film form, but in story form, I may try.
Thanks for comment and suggestion. Its good to know that there are people who like issues based things.
@Krishn(2),
That is a problem with media that its almost blind while dealing with a subject and in India Media does not know the after effects of their own contribution in any event. They do everything in a blow because they have to follow the policy, perfectly covered by the slogan of Aaj Tak- Sabse tej sabse pehle-.
Indian media simply does not know how to differentiate between events and events. They will cover a rape case with same method as they will cover a quarrel between two political leaders or coroporate leaders.
They dont know how they can cover the event while saving the child and in most cases parents also.
Media is powerful so its helpful also in social causes but its behaviour is mostly immature.
@Om Prakash(1)
Perhaps this was not the case where politicians could shift the responsibilities from one shoulder to other.
DM of that region should have acted before it was highlighted on such a large scale.
This was his case as it comes in his jurisdiction.
nice flow and balance Rk..
for a moment i thgt it was one of your signature posts…
one of your signature posts… -:)
hard task masters :)
RK-ji, yet another thought provoking, insightful and sincere write up. Not only have you highlighted a classic film, which some of may not have seen, but effectively brought to the fore a grave social issue. It’s extremely sad to think that such things continue to exsist…
On an odd personal note, I had always thought I had seen Dhool Ka Phool. But a quick web-check on the film and I don’t remember it (I always thought it starred Shashi Kapoor… but I guess I always confused it with “Dharmputra”.
@Tony(13),
Confusion between Dhhool ka Phhool and Dharamputra is a very common mistake. Many people face this confusion.
Both are directed by Yash Chopra
Both have Mala Sinha and Man Mohan Krishna
Both deal with adpoted Boy
rather song
“Tu Hindi Banega na Musalman Banega
Insaan kee aulad hai insaan banega”
could have been very well used in Dharamputra as well. It perfectly matches with the theme of the Dharamputra.
