Even as i write this article, approximately 1200 prints of Dhoom 2 would be getting ready for a world wide release tomorrow. I was chatting with producer Viveck Vaswani and talking generally about this week’s release and we both decided to predict the business Dhoom 2 would do, based on a certain logic!
Ticket prices in India range from 30 bucks in a bhiwandi single screen theatre to 350 bucks in the red lounge cinemax, versova. Now, for practical purposes, we kept an average ticket price at Rs 100.
Second step. The capacity of a screen ranges from 350 in fame adlabs to 1150 seats in liberty, marine lines. Again, for all practical purposes we arrived at an average of 500.
Third step. Once a print is dispatched to the theatre, the theatre can use that print for running 4 shows (as in case of single screens) to 6 shows (as in case of multiplexes). Let us take the average at 5 shows per day.
Now we multiplied the average ticket price to the average screen capacity and we got a figure of Rs 50,000 per show. Multiply it to 5 shows a day and you get Rs 2,50,000 per day.
Multiply that to 1200 prints and you get a mind boggling figure of Rs 30,00,00,000 per day. Assuming the film will be housefull for the entire weekend (by the way the tickets have been sold out till tuesday), we multiply it to 3 days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and you get an incredible Rs 90,00,00,000. And these are only the theatrical gross collections for the first week end only including entertainment tax. Even after taking such a conservative estimate, Dhoom 2 is set to collect at least Rs 90 crores in 3 days. Add music sales, dvd rights, satellite rights to that and boy, do we have a super hit or what!!!
The film will get a clear run at the box office for the next two weeks till 8 december when Babul releases. Till then, it will rake in as much moolah as it can. Any guesses for what the final figure would be?

Good calculation, though some approximations are on the higher side. The Chopras would have done perfect math certainly…

Good percentage of 1200 print would go oversees, where you have an average of $10 ticket. The show will run houseful for sure on the opening weekend. Collection in India is like peanuts compared to overseas even if it is a very big number!

Nice Calculations…. [:)]
