Dhoom 2: One-man show

After Dhoom became a runaway hit, expectations were surely running high from the sequel. And it sure doesn’t disappoint! We see the return of Jai (AB jr.) and Ali (Uday Chopra), this time on the hunt for A (Hritik Roshan), a thief who is a master of disguise. The duo is joined by ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu) with a Lara Croft-esque entry. Sunehari (Aishwarya Rai) is added to the mix to complete a star-studded line up.

The movie is full of mind-blowing stunts that include sand-surfing in the deserts of Namibia, roller-blading through the heavy Mumbai traffic and base-jumping in Brazil. The locales are beautifully shot and the movie has an extremely sleek and stylish feel to it. The music, though not great, keeps the movie rolling forward. However, what the movie really lacks is a story. The screenplay is threadbare and is held together mainly by the nitrous-boosted action and Hritik Roshan.

Hritik Roshan gives a powerful performance in which he handles the awe-inspiring stunts, intense emotions and the sleek dances with equal ease. He is literally the heart and soul of the movie. He is what they call the X-factor of the movie.

Abhishek Bachchan is relegated to a supporting role and comes out looking more querulous than intense. Uday Chopra’s character is almost as good as undefined. Though he adds few laughs, it soon seems to get repetitive and irritating as the movie progresses. Aishwarya Rai tries hard to add the oomph by wearing the skimpiest of dresses, but fails to deliver a performance that could do justice to an important character in the scheme of things. On the other hand, Bipasha is simply amazing in the looks department. As for her character, it seems almost unjust the way it’s reduced from an ace cop to a Baywatch beauty.

But despite the weak story, the movie is a thorough entertainer that moves ahead at a lively pace and keeps you engrossed for the entire 3 hours. It’s definitely worth watching in the theaters and is going to be one of the biggest hits. I would rate it an A minus.

HG, I was travelling from Raigad to Bombay one night in 1 of those a/c buses & they were playing Dhoom 1. Didnt have any choice as it was dark outside. So best thing to do watch the movie & curse your luck for getting stuck in such situation. I always had bad luck with these buses. Movies I had to watch in such situations were Tera Naam, Bunty aur Bubli, Jo bole sau nihaal. Flet like commiting Hara kiri.

Now I always check the movies the bus drivers will play b4 I board it. Otherwise, find another bus.:(

Hara-Kiri? lol, i know what you must have felt, cos my ma forces (i just give her some company) me to watch these kind of movies - it feels like Mumbai Police has tied me down on a chair and giving me somewhat third degree - hang on, i reckon, this feeling would be inferior than that. I literally start crying….

It beats me too as to how can you NOT like this flick?
It’s a pure entertainer and the last time I checked, that’s what movies were supposed to be. You can’t expect every movie that releases to be a Tarantino, Scorcese or Vishal Bharadwaj masterpiece.
There are times when at the end of a stressful week, you just want to sit back and relax with popcorn in one hand and a soda in the other and be entertained and Dhoom 2 does just that!
It’s high time we start giving credit to Bollywood for pulling off such daredevil stunts and amazing visual effects in a budget that comes nowhere close those available for the Mission Impossible and Bond flicks.

I couldn’t tolerate Dhoom (1). Can one tell me what’s in store for me with Dhoom 2?

    - FB, Nice review. This platform brings the true picture out - the divergent views, likes and dislikes spread over a wide span :) I didn’t enjoy much of D2, but reading your article shows us how you had a ball of a time. I really like this different view and different acceptability that you bring both here on PFC and DT… I have to say that after watching the movie, there were many in the theater who really enjoyed it - as much as you have.

    FenderBender,

yup, it is good to watch a pure entertainer/masala film - but, common, the quality of those flicks still has to be good, right? How can you get entertained from watching Dhoom 2 because there are many flaws and actors are irritating?

Normally I dont enjoy such movies but somehow after so many crappy movies, it was a welcome one!!!!!!!

You know it was like a rajini kanth or vijaykanth movie of the north….Stunt and dance clips of hrithik might have interested his fans! Please forget your intellectual capacity(even cinch of it) b4 watching this flick.

finally saw Dhoom II, in a run down place full of exhilerated audience I guess the perfect place for watching the film.
the film starts very weak, it only picks up once the proceedings shift to Rio(after the song-my name is ali, done almost like a Humko tumse ho gaya hai pyaar from amar akbar anthony). from then the director leaves no opportunity of using star power to the max, and thats a wise thing to do(example- SRK in Don).
in spite of some very mediocre sequences(even hilarious- how can the security guards not see a ‘gigantuan’ diamond-stealer- i dont know what they call it, m not Mr. A!), some almost comical I LOVE YOU routines, a low on IQ state of chor-police affairs, Dhoom 2 gets than wow emotion in the end, and I dont complain much if the film makes me wanna do a vrrroom vrrrooom dhoom jig on my bike on my way back home

the songs are rather good than mentioned all across.
the sequences with AB n HR are the best. could have had more of that mindgame stuff, its better than the stupid diamond chori’s.

bring on more dhooms, m not complaining, but please , some more evil n sex!

Have been holding myself back for quite a long time on this topic, but, cannot keep it under the shell anymore ;).

Dhoom2 had so much potential only if they had a better screenwriter and a better editing team. Never got a feeling that it was a cop-con(artist) movie…more like bro-bro war there…why on earth would a cop want to catch the thief only when he is in the process of heist and not when he comes face-2-face? beats me!!! Logic…throw it out in the bin..vookay no problem…Where was the chemistry? there was no freaking chemistry between either of the characters not Hrithik-Aish, Not hrithik-AB, not Uday-Bips…the only one i cud sniff of was uday and AB..and majot credit for that might go to Uday( surprise surprise). Editing also needed a a lot of re-vamp…you build up the scene with so much footage to it and then deliver a damp squid…eg: the first heist..the Nambian desert…Hrithik lands on train..cut to interior of Train…Hrithik changes his make-up even before i could spell Mr.A in a la Chachi 420ish…then he defies gravity and jumps back on train..wow!!! Magic formuala to fly…Sanjay gadhvi i need it..since i have forgotten to fly ever since i quit smoking pot.!!!!!!

The good point though was the style…Hrithik did look uber-cool..but AB was a misfit in the Sly shades…Bips and Aish looked super hot…but only wish bips got a better/prominent role and not be relagted to the cliched naachgaana….dumb blonde’ish( errr..i shudnt be saying it..coz of all the blonde skirt chasing i am into off late)face on the screen. Aish needs a crash-course on delivery( sick minds i am talking about dialogue delivery)

I will give it 3 out of 5. Was Rakesh Rosan gosht directing DHoom II:-? all the footage goes to Hrithik and looked like he was still in Krissssssssh mode. Have to agree he was very handsome:d Has was looking super cool in her intro scene until she opened her mouth%-( Agree it would have been a better film with some thrilling scenes or a tight script. Also wish my AB baby had a stronger role8-|
Still it’s gonna be highest grosser:-w

  16. rbehemoth on November 29th, 2006 5:54 am

havent seen the movie but surprising that Ash and Hrithik dint sizzle coz last i heard the Bachchans were really upset with the pairing(lip-lock/skimpy outfit and all) and there even was a cold war between AB and HR especially from AB’s side(dunno if on seeing the movie or during the shoot itself).
@muzzy I totally share sympathies coz I watched KKHH in a similar situation(and that too June this year).I just cldnt fucking shut my ears(though i did pretend to sleep for a while).
