Dhoom 2 - Yash Raj films expanding its “made in India” brand!
If someone already has seen, Pierce Brosnen’s “After the sun set” and ” The Thomas Crown Affair“, Sean Connery and Catherine zeta Johnes’s “Entrapment“, Vin Diesel’s “Tripple X” then Dhoom 2 perhaps will be a film (in Salman Khan’s word) of “pakao” category, as one may find that so many scenes are coming staright from above mentioned films. But out of more than 500 million Indians, who are able to watch a film, aprox. 10-50 million people onlymight have seen these hollywood films. Rest will be the people who even have not heard names of Pierce Brosnen, Ruso, Sean Connery, Vin Diesel, Catherine Zeta Zohnes and Aditya Chopra and Sanjay Garhvi have made Dhoom 2 for those people. Even touches of “Shalimar” are there in the scene of musueum with black and white blocks on floor, where Hritik steals the diamond. Only objection to that scene is: What Roman Sculptors were doing in a Bombay based museum?
After 6 months Dhoom 2 wont remain an Aditya Chopra or Sanjay Garhvi film, rather it will always be remembered as a Hritik Roshan film. He is there in every scene, in every emotion associated with the film and those who have not seen Dhoom 1, it will be quite puzzling if John Abraham was really able to play this character in Dhoom 1 in a similar way ?
Film promotes, Hritik Roshan and his acting ability, action scenes, different tanned looks of Aish and Hritik, less dressed actresses and Uday Chopra. Abhishek is there for the sake of playing a role in a big film. He did not have much substance in his role in Dhoom 1 even and here in Dhoom 2 its reduced futher to objectionable level.
Did Abhishek notice Hritik’s actining ability in a scene? There is a pub scene, shot in Brazil, where Hritik and Abhishek’s characters give each other their real identification and ACP Jai Dixit(Abhishek) says” agar tum chori chhor do to kaisa rahe”
Aryan(Hritik) - Bad idea! agar chor chori karna chhorh de to police kya karegee?
This is a dialogue said by Hritik in a way, which Amitabh Bachchan would have opted. Hritik takes a pause before saying Police and watch this pause of Hritik, which was trademark of AB?s dialogue delivery and before that Dilip Saab’s Dialogue delivery style. He brings in, whatever was necessary to live this un-natural role of Aryan - the biggest thief of world.
In whole film there is only one scene in the climax where Abhishek has taken edge over Hritik because here in this scene his character is given much needed weightage and when opportunity comes Abhishek does not disappoint, when he says, par Agar fir kabhi Mr A zinda ho gaya to
“Ashiqon ka janaja hai jara dhoom se niklega”
Hritik has been shown in many get ups and that can send message to?Kamal Hasan that?now an actor is ready to play as many different roles in the league of?Kamal Hasan or Sanjeev Kumar. He looks very authentic in every get up given to him the film and he carries the required body language which matches with that get up.
Abhishek’s role is not having anything to do and this is a pity thing. Directors greed to show few?unnecessary factors e.g. more footage to actresses in this film where they were not even needed, songs which could have been used only as part of promotion of film.
Bipasha Basu’s role is the weakest link - a kamjor karhee in the film. Her role?was not required in the film. ?and because she is police officer in one role and there could have been objections if Director showed her in two piece bikini so a double role has been created for her so that she can be shown in tiny bikini at the sea shores of Brazil. Shamefully this brazilian sister of Shonali the police officer, understands Bombaiya Hindi of Uday Chopra but cant understand english of Abhishek Bachchan.
Abhishek Bachchan should be more intelligent while taking such offers in hand, if his role was given enough material then film could have been far better what it has turned out to be. He must demand the percentage in the film for which he is completely capable. He is given here role of a filler only. Naturally Dhoom 2 is a super hit film and he will get benefits as part of this film but as an actor he can do far better and this he has shown in various films in past.
Aishwarya Rai- She tries hard to play Indian Lara Croft or veiled warrior of “Crouching Tiger and hidden dragon” but she has limitations in her acting skills. Her eyes are beautiful and she looks more beautiful in mask in her entry scene then when she puts on mini/micro tops and skirts. Her character is “like” a trainee before the character of Hritik in the film and in acting department also she lives this condition to a greater height and never gives complementary performance. Even just before their much talked kissing scene she had opportunity to deliver something significant as Hritik was doing in pistol-bullet game scene. Her body language did not suit the demand of the role. And here she even kisses on screen. In kyon ho gaya na, it was like, was it a kiss or not but here Hritik and Aish are induged in a lip lock scene.
Kiss in Dhoom 2 will bring many questions before Aishwarya Rai which she wont be able to ignore. She gets big films but she is not giving that big performances which are required. She is happy with average performances.
Uday Chopra- He has a talent in comedy but for many people his presence in film can be termed as a family matter and his performance can be ignored under that impression. Its really case of walking on double edged sword. He can do good in comedy and he should concentrate on that kind of roles. He has done very few films and he may also get kind of roles which suit his acting skill.?But he has removed that barrior where he was termed as an actor in films because his father and big brother are in film production.
?Hritik Roshan is an actor whose face is not limited to Indian bounadries only and film adequetly promotes his international looks. If racial discrimination is removed from Hollywood then Hritik is an Indianm star with International appeal. His screen appearnace does not demand that he has to play an Indian or Asian character. In terms of stunts also Dhoom2?projects Yash Raj Film’s banner in International market.

RK - actualy you are right about one thing - AB Jr’s acting. I like him personally but also feel that in this film he should have shown some more class and instead of looking constipated, he could have developed a better character personality. Somehow, the men behind the scene felt that he has a brooding look and its kind of cool - on the contrary he looks absurd. even in D1, AB Jr, was quite over the top - either in the serious scenes or towards the end when he interacts with JA at the bar. It looks more as if he was there only to add to the star cast. The only scene where I envied him was the first song with the hottie Rimi Sen!
Sophocles:
One should suggest Anil Kapur, Abhishek Bachchan, Sunel Shetty etc that their acting skills wont be reduced if the shave regularly. Abhishek’s makeup man should be cursed for his looks.
I think Jr. B does this kind of film for fun and holiday, not for acting. He is just in it for his sake of his friends. So I think he does not give shite about the acting.. and we should not look more into his acting in this film, imo.
HG:
Amitabh has always come out for the films made by his friends but did he take it as just fun and no acting? He is equally good either he is doing a bad film or a good film. Amitabh is a constant performer:)and
if people expect same sincerity from Abhishek then its not much. After all he is in a profession of acting and so many people go to watch a film when they see his name in casting. He shd be knowing potential of his role in a film. His friendship with Hritik and Uday or Aditya Chopra wont go sour if he does not do a role where he has nothing to do.
I agree. but they are too different kind of personalities. and perhaps Jr. B believes that people do not watch this kind of movies for acting, hence.. he does not take it seriously. Do people really watch D2 for his acting? i, for one, would not take his acting seriously or look much into this perfomance. i only would critcize him for doing this kind of films when hr has talent to do challenging roles.
HG:
you mean Abhishek does not have talent to do challenging roles?:o
No, no.. Of course, he has the talent and that is why i do not like him doing something like D2. I want him to do another Lallan Singh or Naach or Shankar…
H.G.
What a relief :)>-
Yes he has certain limitations which he has to overcome before he is treated as an actor who can play any kind of roles. Now he is good in some and not good in some. Thats sad for son of Amitabh and Jaya:(
Nah, I do not think he has any limitations. He has not been given any good roles by people. Only RGV and Mani Ratnam have understood him.
His Bluffmaster character was as casual(typical hero role) as it gets and he exceled at that, imo.
H.G,
yes he excels with few film makers and that shd be a limitation. Recently saw his Umrao Jaan and JP presented him weaker than Refugee his first ever film.
Watched Dhoom and felt it was so bad so bad so bad……Aditya Chopra just need to stop writing stories as he is credited with story in the film. There is no story…nothing at all…looks like written by some class II student. Except bipasha in bikini and a half kiss between hrithik and ash, there is absoultely nothing in the movie. Ash just can look good…dont ask her to act. Since the last two years the banner called Yashraj is putting shit after shit after shit and just packaging them well…neal n nikki, salaam namste, bunty aur babli, fanaa…..tell me one film which has good story ????? Mr Aditya, why dont u run a contest at PFC and ask for stories. Stop thinking mere idiotic “ideas” as stories. If they want to make money why they dont just get into any other business. Cant they leave filmmaking for some more intelligent guys ???
phoenix:
u found story was bad? or story telling was equally bad? U found Bipasha in Bikini- an essentially good thing in film?:o
Its not only YashRaj films only, hindi film cos dont desire for a good piece of literature to make a film. After Salim Javed have trained them to have scenes inspite of stories, scene is changed in hindi films. Mahesh Bhatt says clearly that he does not search good literature to make a film. and he is a known filmmaker who knows the market well:-?
I was telling oz the other day, lemme tell you all. HRITHIK ROSHAN IS GOD
@Suparn…why is he God? For his honesty to his roles? Or commitment to his proffession? I though he was alright in Dhoom2…nothing exceptional…infact in some scenes he was mediocre…eg: the basketball scene
I was having this funny conversation with my roomie the other night…where he was saying it is really hard to count the number of movies AB Jr and AB Sr are making these days..he went ahead and joked saying…both the bachchan’s stand outside a studio and when someone says ” Guest Role” Both put up there hands and ask..25-30 yrs wala ya 55-60 yrs wala..you got both of them here..Lol!!
RK…i think there was no story at all. And when there was no story, what will they tell. They just managed to put few scenes together. About Bipasha in bikini…m not saying that it was good thing with respect to the film but atleast it was eyecandy. N the whole industry may think that they dont need stories…But atleast we have few guys like Chandra Prakash Dwivedi (loved his Pinjar) n Vishal Bharadwaj…who still believe in literature. Mahesh Bhatt….he made some really good movies and some really bad ones. Ofcourse, now a days he doesnt need any books because andheri-juhu area has lot many good dvd parlours. N as far as knowing the market is concerned…nobody knows it before the release of their film but everyone knows about it after its release.
OM:
If it does not look “lofty” comment then Hritik is the best actor ( under 45 years category) at present in India. His range is more than any of the actor belonging to any other actor in that age group. In my opinion, Atleast hindi films have following chain
Dilip Kumar - Amitabh Bachchan - Hritik Roshan
and any other super star who can act also falls somewhere in between these actors.:)
phoenix:
like you found Bipasha in bikini as eyecandy, some find Hritik appealing, some find Aish. attractive in stuntbazi type role, some like Uday’s comedy, Some may find Abhishek’s” I am so bored” outlook in the film and so many will be liking dresses given to actors, songs and dances etc. and Producer know this that these fractions make a large sum of people. This is very confusing aspect of cinema that whether good story is needed to make good film or good way of presenttation is needed to make a attractive film.
So many hit and often termed as cult movies, look like a collage if we dig them to search a constantly flowing story line. Does “Pulp Fiction” have a story. Dhoom2 also has additional and non essential factors associated with the one line story- “Catch me if you” relationship between brilliant thief and a competent cop.:)
No doubt film has several unelievable aspects attached with the story(or idea if you like)of the film. Like why on earth, Hindustani police will bother if somebody is stealing something in England or any other part of the world. “Lakshya” had some story line by most famous script writer of hindi cinema - Javed Akhtar, but was film watchable? :(. Even Hritik could not save that film.
Hey nice post….especially about the aishwariya part…
I’ve been lucky to have met both the Director of the movie Mr.Sanjay Gadhvi and the writer of the movie Victor.
I told victor that the scene where Hrithik is a statue is right out of Charlie’s Angels 2 and the illusion of the diamond from Oceans12…and victor said I’ve havent seen the movie but because they were released before ours there has to be an element of inspiration.
Sanjay sir told me that everyone who thinks Dhoom/D2 is like Biker Boys or anyother hollywood are wrong. he says the movie was supposed to be like “Amar Akbar Anthony”…a complete pot boiler.
And personally I think it was a lot like that…I really enjoyed the movie…it was such a crazy fantastic movie…there was no time to think and find faults.
I think casting Hrithik as Aryan was a fantastic decision taken by both the director and Adi Chopra.I’m a very big fan of Hrithik and Aditya chopra ….I was just dying for them to work together and for Hrithik to play a negative role. However I still think there is a lot of talent still dormant in Hrithik and this should just be the start of his golden period of acting…
My ultimate desire would be to see Aditya Chopra direct Hrithik!! Maybe if they make Dhoom3, and work on it together again…it will be fun!!
Komal:
Aditya Chopra in Director’s cap again will be enough to generate curiosity in Audience. Hope he removes his shyness to direct a movie:)
Komal:
Just saw your interview with Victor on rediff!
yes you are right if Aditya and Hritik joins hand for some film. Hope Adi comes out of SRK’s fixation and do a film without him also.:)
RK!
So where does it leaves Aamir Khan ? IMO he z a better actor than Hrithik/Abhishek though he gets a little overboard some times.
TC
HoliDevil:
Aamir Khan is wonderful actor but He is not expanding further.e.g. His comedy is stuck at Rangeela standard and is not going further. His new films will suggest more about his future as member of best actors available. At the age between 30-32 Aamir had taken out almost all his talent. Hritik at this age has grown up more than Aamir was at this age and Hritik is continuously expanding in all directions. He is revealing and extending his vast acting pool and Aamir is at constant level. Say it age factor, physical aspects but Hritk has more potential in future than Aamir Khan or say SRK. He can do what they can do and additionally he can do something extra which they cant do. Hritik’s physical appearance and acting skill provides him better opportunities and perhaps Akbar Jodha will prove that fact!!!!:)He has more range and given opportunity he can bring what was not imagined by director before. In RDB, Fanaa Aamir was predicatble and in KMG, Krrish and Dhoom2, Hritik was not predictable. Even he did not dance with those eyes expressions before in any of his films as he did in Dhoom 2. He brings in changed subtle body movements in his performances.
Having said that, I must emphasis that acting is not tennis tournament where one can win wimbledon and can remain in books for ever as winner of that year. In acting if one is active, can come up with something new, extraordinary anytime at any phase of his career.
@ RK: “Hritik at this age has grown up more than Aamir was at this age”
Slightly disagree mate… Aamir gave some wonderful performances during the early stages of his carrer…mind you they were not histrionic..but very subtle… Eg: Raakh( ohh yeah Pankaj Kapur rocked in it), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar…Andaaz Apna Apna…Having said that i donot want to take away anything from Hrithik…he is my fav of the current crop…ahhh what the hell…RK you have put me in a mind tangle..lets say i dont wanna compare actors..lol!!!
i think, i am the only one who does not like HR at all. Only found him a decent in Lakshay and did not like him in rest of his movies.
anyway, how has HR grown? I do not think he has grown as an actor, has he?
OM:
Even Naina Balsawar rocked in Raakh:).
Aamir has been very good but now he has good competition from Saif, Ajay, Akshay Khanna and Hritik in different categories. Aamir’s honeymoon is over now. Time for him to bring out something different which he did not do before.:)
H.G:
you dont watch Hritik’s films otherwise you would have known that he has grown up to that level that he could fly or jump high which no other actor can do. He was kid in KMG and in Krrish same child became father of a super man. Still you doubt his grown up status ? :d
Hey RK thanx for reading the victor interview.:d
I also did the Sanjay Gadhvi interview on rediff…
will love everyones comment on it.
“Aditya Chopra in Director’s cap again will be enough to generate curiosity in Audience. Hope he removes his shyness to direct a movie:)
ope Adi comes out of SRK’s fixation and do a film without him also.:)”
You know Rk…I feel Adi chopra ki shyness main bhi koi baat hai…It’s not like he is apprehensive about directing or coming out in the open just that he loves doing his work and doesnt care a dime about what others think.Which completely turns me on !!:x
I also dont think he is fixed on SRk…really.the way I seen it…he has always written characters which like him have been very intense and pre-hrithik….except for SRK i dont see anybody being able to play either of Raj or Aryan(Mohabbatien)…
Adding to say
I agree with Suparn HRITHIK IS GOD!
Adding my own two bit - ADI CHOPRA IS GOD.:”>
waqt sab badal deta hai
abhi is looking mature in acting in DHM -2.
BUT he have to work on his voice.
Hritik is realy perfact guy mean good dance acting good voice.
Okay so finally seen Dhoom 2 and what a disgusting waste of money this was!
I’ve seen crap in my time but this was just a star brat ego movie. Seriously there are so many loops in the pathetic storyline and can we see AB jnr in a new image now! the guy is given the same look and dance moves, the cool suave cop didn’t come off correctly either!
Bipasha was wasted! Ash and all the attitude was amusing, don’t get me started about her acting or lack of it! Hrithik does great stunts and looks great but is that all this was about?
Komal:
Sorry for dealy:
Before Bobby, no major star was boyish. They always looked matured men and though Directors showed, Guru Datt, Rajendra Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Sanjay Khan, Amitabh Bachchan etc as college students but they never convinced audience as students because of their mature looks. Rishi Kapoor was the first actor who looked very young and became a major star. Sachin raised promises when he gave some hits with Saarika but he could not sustain his progress. Rishi had played shades of these Raj and Aryans in several films. Not taking away any credit from SRK who plays very well roles given to him, creation of Raj or Aryan is not something special, they are extension of roles played by Rishi Kapoor in Kabhi Kabhi. Rather DDLJ’s Anupam Kher and SRK, the father Son duo have ancestors in Shashi Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor of Kabhi Kabhi.
Like Suraj Barjatya’s films yash Raj Films also have been dealing with their own old films with little make up here and there. They have been making most of the time remakes of their own old films. Perhaps every film maker has only one film to make and rest all is immitation. Or he tries to make that film with perfection thats why repetition in the contents, impacts etc.
Just my observation and point of view.
Dhoom 3 with SRK suggests Aditya’s fixation with SRK.:)In every generation directors have been having fixation with certain actors and its not wrong if Aditya has best tuning with SRK:
i luv ur film
