Dil Bole Hadippa: Battered Cricket

Yashraj movies have always been rich in characters, content, colour, Punjabi and social messages (3CPSM). Every farm fresh YR produce makes life look like a fairy tale taking the audience into an world of happiness and love with an utopian impossibility, which cynics, critics and cynical critics brand as ‘entertainment for gobar audience’. What? You have never heard that phrase mentioned before? Well, now you have. Yashraj movies remind me of gobar (cow-dung) – for some people it’s the holy goo, an essential ingredient for purification, while for others it’s simply a lump of shit.

Dil Bole Hadippa is also not an exception; it’s not Chak De India, so it’s proves the rule of Rab ne Bana Di Jodi. Let’s look into the 3CPSM in this case –

Characters

The black bhainslo – The most important character of the film, the anchor, the connection. It had a dialogue or two, which am sure the cattle class would decipher easily.

Shanno (Rakhi Sawant) – Well she doesn’t have a major role, but that’s never been a deterrent for her to showcase her talents and assets. She plays the role of a dancer in a nautanki and the depth of her character can be ascertained from her cleavage. She should have given some more screen time than the black bhainslo. The black bhainslo did not even dance like her.

Soniya (Sherlyn Chopra) – Less is more, that’s the bottomline for her. She is a former Miss Punjab (or was it Miss World) who has hots for Rohan. Her primary role was to wear meager shorts, generously oiling her boney legs and wobbling her scantily covered boneless pieces, in a stadium to stimulate the home team players.

Vicky (Anupam Kher) – He is a wealthy man who is separated from his family for the last 15 years for some unexplained reasons. In his haydays, he must have been a complete asshole to estrange a wife like Poonam Dhillon. He drives a Honda convertible that specializes in breakdown on the muddy tracks between paddy fields. He has settled in a small town in Punjab and dreams of winning the ‘Aman Cup’- a friendly cricket match played annually between his and Lahore’s team. He also dreams that his family will return to him someday from London.

Lucky (Dalip Tahil) – He is an old friend of Vicky and owns the Lahore team. His team has won the Aman Cup for consecutive 9 years, so he is very sardonic to cricket competency of Indians. He is loud, wears dresses hired from a nautanki and addresses Vicky as ‘laley’.

Rohan (Shahid Kappor)- The muscular star county cricketer from England who carries a dictionary where the word ‘defeat’ does not exist. Must have been a second hand buy, I fear. He plays a multifaceted role – as a son he is obedient to his old man, as captain of the team he is a hard task master, as a man he is abnormally reluctant to acknowledge the stimulation efforts of Soniya and finally a love struck idiot who proves love is blind beyond belief.

Veera (Rani Mukherjee) – She is the niece of the nautanki owner ( Shri Vallabh Vyas), who generally fools around with a bat and nurtures the dream to make it big for Indian cricket team someday. So she pastes pictures of players on her room and practices with children below 7 years. She is a hard hitter and can bat on either hand at ease. She has the physique of a woman but energy and stamina of a buffalo. That’s why Rohan calls her ‘Buffalo girl’. Other than playing cricket she roleplays a male dancer opposite to Rakhi Sawant.

Content
The movie has two modes, namely, the Romantic Mode and Sports mode.
Vicky tricks Rohan and brings him to play and win the Aman Cup for him. Rohan flies down to London and succumbs to his dad’s emotional blackmail and agrees to stay for six months. Veera, desperate to play in the team disguises into Veer, a delicate heavy chested sardar with a husky feminine voice, just by using some frugal facial hair and a pair of brown contact lenses. Rohan takes everyone to task to practice hard, but the players seem to concentrate more towards Soniya’s oily exhibition. One time, Veera accidentally drops her towel in front of Rohan- who after a quick glance and silent judgment covers his eyes, the first sign of platonic love. Veer quickly switched to Veera and successfully conned Rohan. But Rohan’s love grew over time and he tried to exploit Veer’s cricketing ambition in exchange of Veera’s company, unaware of the fact that they are the same person. He even hugged Veer couple of times but never realizes her as a woman. At this point, the movie goes into the Sports mode.

Veer and Rohan practice scene

Veer and Rohan practice scene

I will not spoil the suspense by describing the cricket. All I can say, I have never seen such cricket. Rohan’s team, who diligently ogled Sonya’s oily bobbles during practice sessions, collapsed systematically and consistently against the rival’s target score of 214. How 165 runs were made in 10 overs by the last wicket partnership and how fours and sixes were scored abundantly through shots yet to be named, can’t be explained in words. Did I mention Veera broke her arms but still continued batting ? Or about the winning four runs scored by running between the wicket ? Everything is fair in love and gobar. At the end not only Vicky won the Aman Cup, he also reunited his family, Rohan got Veera, Veera got a chance to give a lecture on gender bias, the people of Pakistan got basic education about gender equality and finally Yashraj stroke another mainstream nail on the entertainment coffin. There’s no bar for gobar.

Is love colour blind ?

Is love colour blind ?

Punjabi
Pind da shera, Hadippa, Chak de Phatte, colourful dances, dhol, beautiful DDLJ references, sarso de khet, kudi di chunri, munde, lassi, rabid-jalebi, khatiya- almost all the essential Punjabi elements were present. The essence of Punjab is also explained with lucid verses – ‘Aa Gaye Ji Punjab Ke Sher, With Bhangra Bistar Beer Butter’ and
Oye Nach karenge touch karenge bachle ve yaara / Ajj to hum too much karenge bachle ve yaara/
Ajj discowale khisko bai desi beat bajani….In catchy upbeat tune.
Very thoughtful poetry like ‘Chewing gum hai chabbi jaa/ Hand pump hai dabbi jaa/ Pipe te jussa kaddi jaa “ is sung when the end credits roll, which probably explains YR philosophy of movies.

Social Message
The movie elucidates many complicated issues simultaneously, just in case any audience fails to get one of them, he would catch the other. We have cricket, gender bias, family unity, India- Pakistan sensitivities all dovetailed within a love story. Howzzat?

I also think the movie subtly talks about the following causes, which did not miss my attention-

Economic recession and revival – Sherlyn Chopra started with paltry microgarments but finally wore a full length saree.
Professionalism- Rakhi Sawant just dances around and shows her tattoos but never talks.
Prevention of cruelty to animals- a bad joke on buffalo was objected by the female protagonist.
Sexual liberation- Difference between a man and a woman is just facial hair, is a myth. The difference can be exposed only by dropping a towel.

Other observations and inferences
Punjab is colourful. Farms are green; sky is blue and they paint their room dark red.
Rani Mukherjee is as cheerful, agile and carefree as a model of ‘Careless Whisper ’ advert.
Shahid Kapoor is working out too much. His sense of touch is covered by heaps of muscles.
It was not clear how Veera managed to tackle ‘those days of month’ during the heavy practice sessions over six months. But such detail would probably hurt Indian sensibilities.
Some cinematic details are deliberately avoided- like how the truck crossed the car on the single lane mud road. Again only cynical critics observe such foolish details and demand explanations.

Itemized Nudity- Sherlyn Chopra & Rakhi Sawant

Itemized Nudity- Sherlyn Chopra & Rakhi Sawant

On a scale of nudity and ugliness Sherlyn Chopra would score more than Rakhi Sawant.
Anupam Kher works with sincerity and conviction is whatever crap role he is put into.

Recommendation
In case you Wanted violence, blood, action this movie is not for you. If you look for qualities like logic and common sense in the script, it’s not for you. If you love cricket this is not for you.

But, if you want your Punjabi curry cooked in gobar gas, go for it.

Anyway Sherlyn Chopra and Rakhi Sawant to be made official cheerleaders for IPL3, and knowing Lalit Modi, he might as well do it. Calling Sheryln Chopra ugly is an understatement, i have seen scarecrows that look far more better.

Also i wonder if Anupam Kher is not getting bored of playing the rich Good Dad, maybe he was earlier bored of playing the rich Bad Dad.
BTW Anupam spilts with Poonam Dhillon, because he wants to live near his “Mitti”, while Poonam prefers “London” ki mitti.

      • Hadippa is a word derived from the expression “Had I A Pa Like That”, generally used when we see guys lord it around for no other reason, but by the virtue of their Pa’s wealth and power.

It comes into play when you see folks like Tushar Kapoor or Uday Chopra, which make you say “Had I a Pa like that”. And that shortened form is Hadippa.

  7. Jokes aside, i think Rani and Preity right now are faced with the “Dreaded 30’s syndrome”, the minute a heroine gets into the 30’s, she is declared Over the Hill, Old, never mind even if she still looks much better than any of the younger heroines. At 30+, Rani is considered too old for the rom coms, light flicks, and the more she acts in serious roles, she is deemed “boring”,”not attractive” enough. For all the Big Talk, about how we are changing and all that blah, blah, somethings remain the same.

That’s because most of the mainstream roles written for heroines require them to play a 20 something bubbly girl (and not a woman), maybe because now the target audiences are the popcorn munching youths. Back in 70s, 80s at least there were roles for women.

But her later movies have been misfires proper,be it Supari or Ek Din 24 Ghante( a terrible, terrible rehash of Run Lola Run), even in Provoked and Ramchand Pakistani, her acting was nothing too great. She is a decent actress, but i would not put her in the league of a Smita or Shabana, not yet, IMO.

There is a market for women character in movies…sadly nobody exploits it.. I think even though it was a glamorous Shilpa Shetty, the fact that a “wife” was liked by the audience… not cuz she is kinda cheating, but for just for her situation and charcter… similarly the Priety Zinta character in DCH, I dont think age had anything to do with that character… it was a youngie thing, it was about that good company frienn love role which was liked… same thing with a role like what katrina kaif had in New york, if the college ka life part is taken away, that role again did not need to be a 18-24 year old woman and the role was accepted… somewhere we need to have more scripts for such roles…

Regarding portrayal of cummunities, it’s all sterotyped.
A Bengali will always wear specs and utter ‘Shaala’ and ‘Uribaba’ after every sentence. A bong woman will say ‘eeeesh’.
Any South indian will be termed as ‘Madrasi’, will wear ‘Vesti’and always replace ‘Yes-Yem-Yes’ for text messages.
A Punjabi will dance like mad at the slightest provocation.

When you make a movie like DBH, which is a movie of (about) Punjab, made by Punjabis, for the consumption of mostly Punjabi, the least you could do is not make a mockery of them…. If you seen Little Zizou you will understand what I’m trying to say….

Honestly, the script had potential without the love angle, Punjab, Pakistan, Cricket and women power.
They could have replaced Cricket with water polo to make Rani’s character disguise more believable. What say ?

It might be “punjabi curry cooked in gobar gas” but still it didn’t go unnoticed by you lot, did it? That in itself is some achievement!

Movies come and movies go but a Yash Raj film, especially one with Rani mukerji in it, is always highly sought after on this board. Glad you’re finding it all so amusing. After all, little boys have to give vent to their pent-up frustations and feelings of inadequacy. What better way than to single out a YRF for such ridicule.

Makes you feel “real intelligent£ and “super cool”, like Salman Khan in Wanted. That’s why you lot liked it so much. As you know Salman is known more for his brawns than his brains, with a petty and vindictive personality to go with it. Guess that’s why you liked the movie soooo much! But guys, it’s only a movie. Salman’s not that dexterous, brave and bold in real life.

Seriously, you bunch of retards, one thing is clear, whether you like YRF’s or not, you wait with baited breath for their release. After all there’s not much to write about the films you like, is there. They are not even noticed. Most of them come and they go and will continue to do so.

Do you think you can frighten, bludgeon and bully people into not liking something or speaking out about it. Do you think your comments against people like me, intimidate me. Well think again. If people like me don’t speak out, then bullies like you win. Your voice is not more important than mine.

I was wondering just how long it would take to find an article of this type on PFC about DBH. Just when I thought, being that you hold YRF in such contempt and having established that YRF were not even worth bothering about, and on the basis of past comments and counter comments, people on this board might not bother, I find this. Talk about “flogging a dead horse”. Are you masochists that you keep repeating yourselves!. You had a choice, Wanted or DBH. You chose Wanted. Good for you. This Friday you can watch the stunning actress, Priyanka Chopra in “what’s your Rashee”. See, you have so much choice. India makes so many movies that one is almost spoilt for choice.

My choice was DBH and I loved it. Want to go and watch it again.

Glad I didn’t disappoint. I’d promote DBH and recommend everyone here to go watch it but your limited membership has made their feelings pretty clear. No matter, I’ve read so many great things about DBH from other people that really I’m not concerned that the odd 100 who contribute here didn’t like it. Plenty of other people did.
As for Wanted’s success, I would put it down to a bout of religious bonding on the part of the audience. DBH held very well given this onslaught plus the malicious reviews by the biased critics who have their own agendas.

I take it you must be raf or whatever the name was. I am not that Alyssa but I applaud her. Nor am I Rani. How I lament that I am not for she of the beautiful eyes and bountiful talent is a joy to watch on screen. No wonder AC is in love with her! My only saving grace may be that I am perhaps more well-read and intelligent than her.

Why is it so difficult to believe that not all and sundry agree with your pov? Have you got a superiority complex or a psychosis of some kind

For different pov’s go to India-Forums because that looks more like a genuine site. You’ll find lots of praise for DBH but also some negative comments although the former are greater in number. I am not against a mixed bag of comments…that is good!

BollywoodHungama user reviews are littered with people like yourselves but the majority are Salman Khan fans trying to put people off DBH. I guess they are supressing the more favourable reviews because it would not look good for TA who gave it such a bad review! Subhash K.Jha,a man who seems to contradict himself time and time again given the “state of play” has given his review. Pity we were not allowed to comment on him.

They had a Review for DBH on the Monday after Toronto from a user which they kept there for the remaining days until recently. Compare this with the user review for What’s Your Rashee which was taken off the very next day. Pressure from UTV and AG. I guess that’s pointer of how things work in the Indian media! If you don’t pay up or give them interviews they don’t give you a good review. Put people off as soon as possible until the product is dead and buried. The films promoted by PFC won’t suffer the same fate because no matter how good the reviews are for the films they like, nobody wants to watch them regardless apart from one here or there.

The other popular site is imdb but that has also been invaded by people like yourselves. May be you are some of them because this site get’s a mention now and again. I’m not to worried because like this site they too are small in number – the losers who comment regularly that is. The greater damage is done by the immediate bad reviews. I wouldn’t mind if a film was genuinely bad but content is very rarely the motivating factor in either a good review or a bad one. That is the problem.

Whatever credibility this site had has gone for me. You are just like any other basher site or Fan Following type of site. Praise your favourites and abuse any
competitors. I love kajol but I hate Rani type. The only difference is that they deal with people and this site with products. But hey, I shall keep returning cause I wouldn’t like to spoil your fun and to also remind you once in a while that there are people and another world outside of your cocoon!

Just see the downfall of Amitabh from stardom due to his selection of movies in 1980’s. YRF following the same path. DBH is no better than Mard, Jadugaar or Toofan. Then they have switched to watch American, regional and world cinema due to their love and pursuit to understand cinema better. DBH has baffled the viewers and almost of people here has same experince with the movie. There is no conspiracy going on to degrade Rani Mukherjee or YRF. A film is bad then it should be trashed. Remember, all our lives, we have been asked to believe that “quality matters, not quantity”? Similarly, in the case of movies, it is the quality (content) of the movie that matters, not its running time or skin show. Today, you must be curious and teachable in your choices with cinema. If someone recommends that you must take a closer look at the films of Majid Majidi or Peter Weir, you should.

This is a hilarious response. A crappy movie is a crappy movie whether it is from YRF, UTV, Dharma or the beloved Anurag. Why do people get so defensive when it comes to their favorite stars or directors?

BTW, DHB is not doing well at the box office. It has poor earnings overseas (US, UK, UAE, etc.) and is falling badly (70%) after the weekend in India. It may recover it’s cost. Ultimately, it has been rejected by not just the critics but also the viewing public. The YRF formula is stale and boring and no longer working – time to try something new.

Alysha is on a hyperventilating overdrive. If, according to you, the critics who put the movie down are biased, the people here are a bunch of retards, IMDB has been invaded by traitors, the countless tweeters who criticized the movie are probably paid to speak against the movie, the scores of bloggers who didn’t like the movie are buffoons, if Rani is your lesbian goddess and YRF is infallible then good for you! This verbal diarrhoea does not add up to a reasonable debate. You come across as an uneducated virago despite your self claimed superior intelligence. But I must say, I can just see you sitting at your computer/laptop “hyperventilating” with “smoke” coming out of your ears. You need to calm down and have some fun. If DBH didn’t tickle your funny bone try “Dumb and Dumber”. Watching “serious” cinema has done nothing for your sense of humour.

a movie like DBH, and looking at rani, gets me an interesting thought (twisted mind, thinks like the shabby novel writers with unneccasry twists) but can somebody tell me, if say an upcoming director, who would ve tried to cast these stars in their movies, which might have been off beat, and the stars might have refused throwing tantrums and ridiculing the idea, and now if these directors are seen as the torch bearers of the next big thing, what happnens do these directors still try to cast these fading or dwindling stars in their movies? suppose (my knowledge is dwindling or he is too big) if Anurag kashyap had tried asking Rani to sign for say gulaal, and she had refused and even discouraged the idea…. will they generally re consider to take these actors when they are in the stronger position and and readily accept and give an offer to the star? I was just thinking, if suppose AK had indeed kept SRK in mind while making No Smoking, and SRK more or less discouraged the whole idea… and if today SRK was at a position where he knows he can no longer continue with his regular flicks (I am not saying thats how it is right now, but suppose) and AK is planning this huge movie up …. generally in the industry, does old ego cut into this chance of working together? or they just get back together ..

Clearly at t(0): SRK > AK (both realising that… and I suspect there is no reason for SRK to mock AK, he would have just given a discouraging, but none the less polite NO)….

and at t(n): If AK > SRK, then he might say NO to SRK but the reason for that would not be a “grudge” he holds… Just that SRK is no longer worth it…. Maybe in the old days when there was very very limited money, there might have been ego clashes holding the most importance… I don’t think so that’s the case anymore….

The movie had potential to cross the social stigma of PMS/ Aunt Flo’s visit and created some humorous situations, but as I had guessed rightly, it would have hurt Indian sensibilities.
            You are right.
Even if the Veera character was swimmer she would have won the gold during her mens. If she was 9 months pregnant, she would have scored 200 by simply running between the wicket at ease, before giving birth to a triplet on the pitch itself. The stadium then would have given her a standing ovation. If she was blind, she would have won the gold on shooting, by her sheer sixth sense and determination.
After all it’s a sports movie and a winner should take it all, at the end.

Now that you have chosen to divert from the topic, make convenient assumptions and guide me on how to make people laugh, let me share some jokes for your brothers (including me) here -
(1)Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.
The man at the counter asked the older boy, ‘Son, how old are you?’
            ‘Eight’, the boy replied.
The man continued, ‘Do you know what these are used for?’
The boy replied, ‘Not exactly, but they aren’t for me. They’re for him.
He’s my brother. He’s four. We saw on TV that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike.
Right now, he can’t do none of those’.

2)Little Johnnie walked up to the front of the class, and with a piece
of chalk, made a small white dot on the blackboard, then sat back
down. Well the teacher couldn’t figure out what Johnnie had in mind
for his report on something exciting, so she asked him just what that
            was.

            “It’s a period” reported Johnnie.

“Well I can see that” she said. “but what is so exciting about a period.”

“Damned if I know” said Johnnie, “but this morning my sister said she
missed one. Then Daddy had a heart attack, Mommy fainted and the man
            next door shot himself.”

      • ~uh~ bhai,

The answer is quite plain & simple but i doubt you have the objectivity to dwell over it.

I blame the momentary loss of your discerning movie taste (during SC), down to the close proximity (via PFC) to people who made SC. Your vision was too clogged by the razzmatazz of the movie premier, by the fact that Anurag Kashyap was sitting in the same row with you and Anupan Kher was standing in the aisle clapping.

If SC didn’t had “PFC Camp Movie” label attached to it, I’m quite sure your perception of the movie would have been a lot different.

Am not saying you sucked up to the PFC Camp on purpose, No Sir, am just saying that the atmosphere & the build up of the movie clogged your vision. It happens. Next time watch movies without any pre-conceived notions & without getting influenced by other persons views (no matter if the other person is someone as respectable as the two AK’s (Anurag Kashyap/Anupam Kher).

Dikaavo pe na Jaao.. Apni Akkal Lagao.

Having said that, your reviews are fun . However I the review of DBH was quite vulgar & was aimed at typical front benchers (who feel titillated at the mention of words like Muth Maarna, Palang Tod etc) . Grow up , you can be sarcastic & witty without resorting to vulgarity.

Great review! loved that you picked on the details like the single lane road. Also loved that you ended with “If you love cricket this is not for you”. LOL, which is ironic in the sense that YRF must have OK’ed this screenplay thinking “ohh people love cricket, so this movie will sell” :) I love cricket, and yes watching this movie made me cringe

  46. Alysha, if you like Yash Raj movies, if you enjoyed Dil Bole Hadippa, good for you, no one is gonna put a bullet in your head for it. But you don’t have any goddamn right to go on a crusade here against all those who hated it, calling them retards, Losers, and what not, and drawing all kinds of “unwanted religious angles” to it.

You want some 1 to respect your choice, you better respect other choices. As Simple as that.

Thank God..the movie is a crap..otherwise YRF next venture would have been DBH 2..Shahid Kapur impersonating as a female and aspiring to join the womens hockey team..and Sarukh Khan coming back as coach..with item number by Uday Chopra..
