Dil Dhoondta Hain… Madan Mohan’s variations

Thanks to Pratap, a PFC fan and cine fanatic… we on PFC now have a file to play the song …. Dil Dhoondta Hain… but with a difference…

The recording of this song is in Madan Mohan’s voice where he is giving it different tunes… than the one which eventually got selected…

No Gulzar fan can afford to miss playing this song… Dil Dhoondta Hain, is like the initiation into the Gulzar club for every newbie…

I started listening to this song in the late seventies on those large LP records, then each time the movie “Mausam” was played on television, then amongst friends, those rooftop nights with alcohol and hostel buddies… many more memories… Dil Dhoondta Hai is and still remains one of those rare gems that has been equally appreciated and liked by people spread over 3 decades of generations…

The voice is Madan Mohan’s. The file, according to Pratap came from Gulzar’s fan club on Yahoo Groups. Thanks guys for sharing this one. Highly appreciate this… (the file is temporary uploaded on a free server where it will be deleted after two weeks… meanwhile trying to find a free service for such music file upload that are legal)

PS - the tune you hear has now been used in a recent Yash Chopra movie :)

    - Just got home and heard the recording… (couldn’t listen to the entire file at work)… this is simply amazing… specially the various stages - showing how after each tune Madan Mohan moved closer and closer to the final tune which was used in the movie… Gulzar saab’s two lines in there was a pleasant surprise… who’s the lady who is speaking to Gulzar saab in the tape? I amazed to see that this recording has received only 1 vote so far.

the song i heard is from the Veer Zaara. the tune was used for veer zaara in the song tere liye.madan mohan had used the lyrics of dil dhoondhta hai as a dummy lyrics for the tune

    Thanks a ton Pratap …
and the treat was Asha Bhosle (read this Oz) and Gulzar talking towards the end !!!!

  6. Naren on December 13th, 2006 12:41 am

Thanks a ton Pratap and Oz. The song is my fav till date. the first time I heard it (was in my 9th std) I said oh boy!!! how can somebody know about my intimate thoughts with such precision.

specially the line–’Thandi, safed chadaron mein jaagein der tak, taaron ko dekhtey rahen chhat par pade hue’– it gives me goosebumps, even today.

Thanks Pratap & OZ, the voices are Gulzar, RDB & Asha Bhonsle. This take from Vividh Bharati’s program Sangeet Sarita (timing 7.15 AM to 7.30 AM in India [IST) - this series was named RDB: Meri Sangeet Yatra (14 or 15 episodes). Heard the rerun just a couples weeks back. These days they broadcasting Khaiyaam’s Sangeet Yatra.

OZ: I’ve another snippet from the same (RDB’s)program; would u like upload it here?

  8. Pratap on December 13th, 2006 7:11 am

Yes Gattu, you are right, the snippet is from the program you have mentioned. Good to know that it is being rerun. Guys, if you love hindi songs and have access to Vividh Bharati, this programme is NOT to be missed. Wish I could listen to the good old Vividh Bharati ki Vigyapan Prasaran Seva here in Toronto. :((

  9. Pratap on December 13th, 2006 7:45 am

@Rony D’costa - Yes, the tune has been used in Veer Zaara but Madan Mohan did not compose music specifically for Veer Zaara and hence could not have used dummy lyrics. The tune was actually composed for the Dil Dhoondta hai song. As you must be aware Madan Mohan passed away years ago and Yash Chopra digged out the tunes from the archives to use them in Veer Zaara.

  10. oz on December 13th, 2006 8:07 am

    - Rony, it’s true the same tune is used for Veer Zaara… but it was dug out from the archives by Madan Mohan’s son and was used for the movie… think you are caught in a time warp here… as Pratap mentions… MM passed away in the 70s and the voice you hear is recorded (I’m assuming here) during his working on making the tunes for Dil Dhoondta Hain… hope this clears the sequence of actual events for you :)

    - Kartik, Thanks…

    - Naren, YW… Yeah that one and another line that gets me is ‘Jadon ki narm dhoop…’ that line always hits me whenever there’s a fog or a cloudy weather…

    - Gattu, thanks for the info… Vividh Bharati still exists!!! wow!!! many many many memories of Vividh Bharati… more on that some day… Yeah sure… you don’t even have to ask… pieces like these need to be spread amongst the fans around the globe… please do email me the file.

    - Pratap, is there a way to listen to Vividh Bharati online?

  11. Pratap on December 13th, 2006 8:55 am

Another interesting fact about the song - As you all might know that the mukhda of the song is taken from a Mirza Ghalib ghazal. The ghazal goes something like -
Jee Dhoondta hai phir wohi fursat,
ke raat din baithe rahe tassavur-e-jaana kiye hue.
Notice that the comma is after ‘fursat’ which is different from the way it is used in the song.

  12. Pratap on December 13th, 2006 9:11 am

Oz, I am not sure if it is available on-line. The google search for ‘Vividh Bharati online’ did not return any positive matches.

  13. Gattu on December 13th, 2006 10:40 am

Oz: VB is still premitive. They don’t even have a proper email id:((

    Have sent the file.

  20. tushar on December 14th, 2006 7:53 am

guys, have you checked out ASHA’s new album, not the latest one, the one before that, called Asha reveals RD. its awesome! it has all the hidden gems from RD, treated with the most basic un-tech orchestration. i never heard these songs before, goyake chunache, and other lesser heard gems from shalimar n the likes.

  21. Pradeep on December 14th, 2006 12:21 pm

Om, I think I have seen Ismaail Darbaar, Vishal Bhardwaaj, Jatin-Lalit in various tv programs/interviews using harmonium.
