Dil Diya Dard Liya(`66)::Inspired by Wuthering Heights of Emily Bronte
Much before Amitabh and Shahrukh, Dilip Kumar had portrayed leading roles having grey shades and DDDL is one such film where he shows love, hate, revenge, all through his character Shankar. If one believes that Dilip Kumar used to interfere a lot in the story department and so many times used to ghost direct his films then this is the film which can enhance their understanding about Dilip Kumar’s constructive inputs in the films, which he agreed to do. Dilip Kumar always worked hard on scripts and did several sittings with his directors to understand completely the character he has to play and the plot of over all film and to know other characters also.
Veteran director AR Kardar approached Dilip Kumar for this hindi adaptation of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights”. Dilip Kumar took keen interest in the project. He did not work only on his character but he worked hard also on developing the character of Ramesh, played by Pran. He worked so hard on Pran’s role and helped him understanding the depth of the character and bringing nuances of the character that Pran mentioned later that when film was released people asked Dilip Kumar,” But where you were in the film, it was Pran all over?”. Its difficult these days to search that kind of devotion and bonhomie among actors.
Like the English novel, a kind landlord, lives with his two children, Son Ramesh and daughter Roopa. Landlord adopts a boy of his son’s age. Boy is having a locket in his neck and his name is kept as Shankar. Landlord treats Shankar as his own son but his son Ramesh hates Shankar, though his daughter Roopa develops a good bond with Shankar and they become friends.
Ramesh is cruel since childhood and he often beats Shankar and servants. When a servant brings him milk, he sings,” Doodh nahin peena tera khoon peena hai. He does not treat Shankar as his equivalent let alone brother or friend and treats him as his servant. Shankar bears his atrocities and when Landlord is died then Ramesh converts Shankar completely in to his servant. He uses hands or back of Shankar to ride over his horse and often beats him by hunter.
They are grown up and if there is a change in the equation between Ramesh and Shankar then it’s the enhanced hate factor in the heart of Ramesh. He hates Shankar even more now. Shankar’s life is hell but he has solace in the friendship he has with Roopa and the bond is not limted to friendship only. Roopa not only has soft corner for Shankar but she develops love towards him and he also loves her but he fears Ramesh. Once Ramesh and Roopa have to go to nearby estate to attend a party given by their family friend Satish. Ramesh thinks Satish is good choice for Roopa as he is rich, belongs to a known family and he also shows his liking towards Roopa. Shankar leaves the home but not before beating the Shankar and when they leave the place Shankar realizes that Roopa has forgot something which she had to carry with her. He runs after them and reaches the party and Ramesh becomes angry to see him there and he insults him. Insulted Shankar comes back and in his sadness he thinks to go away but soon Roopa comes and makes him understand and her love pacifies him.
With her shower of love he becomes happy and they express their love and happiness in the song,
[a song of union, in semi classical touch sung by Rafi and Asha].
Saavan Aye ya na aye, Jiya jab jhume sawan hai (Asha /Rafi /both)
Taar mile jab dil se dil ke wahi samay manbhawan hai, (rafi)
Wahi samay manbhavan hai (both)
Sawan …..
Jab se piya tu naino mein aya prem ke rang mein rach gayee kaya
Bagon mein van mein neel gagan mein sabme hai tere rup kee chhaya
Tu hai mere sang hai to hardam khushi kee awan awan hai
Sawan ……..
Ankhiya manjheere man ektara, inme baje naam tihara
Hanste gate jeevan beete, ant na ho geet hamara
Mausam aya such pawan ka dukhon kee jawan jawan hai
Sawan ……
But soon this happy time is over because Ramesh gets the news of their romance and he conspires to kill Shankar. Roopa listens this conspiracy and she tries to inform Shankar so that he could run away but its too late. Ramesh and his men, beat Shankar and when they think he is died, they throw him from the roof of the fort in to a downside flowing river.
What a restrained performance can be, watch Dilip Kumar’s acting in this part of the film!
Ramesh likes a courtesan Tarabai and spends too much money on her. Roopa is lost and sad now and she thinks Shankar is dead. Satish tries to woo her and he shows his interest before Ramesh also. Ramesh has lost almost all his money in gambling and his affair with Tara Bai. He even gives Tara Bai the ownership of his estate. He is a ruined man and Satish tries to brainwash Roopa that this world is very cruel and being a woman she needs protection of a man and as he loves her, she should also give her accordance for the marriage. Uner circumstances that Ramesh has given their house also to Tara Bai, Roopa has to live with Satish’s family at his home. People question relation between Satish and Roopa and under pressure Roopa becomes ready to marry Satish.
Shankar is nor died and he finds him lying at the bank of river at new place. He recovers from his wounds and he goes to a princely state Belapur. Circumstances reveal that he is the lost Prince of the state. In a ceremony he is enthroned. Shankar is now the king of Belapur. He is eager to meet Roopa. In his solitude he sings
Dilruba maine tere pyar mein kya kya na kiya dil diya dard liya
Kabhi phulon mein gujaree kabhi kanton mein jiya, dil diya dard liya
Jindagi aaj bhee hai bekhudi aaj bhee hai
Pyar kehte hain jise wo khushi aaj bhee hai
Meine din raat mohabaat kee teri jaam piya dil diya dard liya
Dilruba……
Kya kahun tere liye meine ansoo bhee piye
Kabhi khamosh raha kabhi shikve bhee kiye
Kar liya chaak gireban kabhi daamna ko siya
Dil diya dard liya, dilruba meine ——-
Pyar kee jaan hai tu, dil ka arman hai tu
Kaun duniya se dare jab nigehban hai tu
Apnee kashti ko sahare pe tere chhor diya.
Dil diya dard liya ……….
A song sung by Rafi. Naushad has used flute in a special manner in this song.
Its almost a year when he goes back to meet Roopa. He thinks that now he is King of Belapur and now Ramesh should not have any problem by marrying Roopa with him. He finds that Ramesh has lost all his money and is living a life of an alcoholic. Shankar thinks that Ramesh will value his new incarnation of a king but to his astonishment he finds that Ramesh still hates him and after knowing that Shankar is the king of Belapur he ridicules him and insults him. Ramesh says,” tu kal bhee bhikhari tha aur aaj bhee bhikharee hee hai aur age bhee bhikharee hee rahega. Tujhe Roopa nahin milegee”. Ramesh is a sadist and he enjoys pain of Shankar and fact that inspite of newely got power and money Shankar cant get Roopa, he feels overjoyed.
Shankar finds that Ramesh has married Roopa with Satish. He thinks that Roopa too cheated him and gave preference to rich Satish over his poor status. Shankar is filled with revenge. He thinks to destroy lives of Ramesh, Roopa and Satish. He arranges more alcohol and facilities to Ramesh and though Ramesh enjoys the facilities but he continuously curses, ridicules and abuses Shankar. Under the circumstances Roopa is unable to help Shankar and his misunderstandings make Roopa also a target of his hate and revenge.
A broken Shankar who is filled with revenge and hate, sings.
Guzare Hain Aaj Ishq Mein Ham Us Maqaam Se
Nafarat Sii Ho Gayee Hai Mohabbat Ke Naam Se
Hamako Na Ye Gumaan Thaa, O Sangadil Sanam
Raah-e-Vafaa Se Tere Bahak Jaayenge Qadam
Chhalakegaa Zahar Bhii Teree Aanhon Ke Jaam Se
Guzare hain ……..
O ! Bevafaa Teraa Bhii Yuun Hii Tuut Jaae Dil
Tuu Bhii Tadap Tadap Ke Pukaare Haay Dil
Teraa Bhii Saamanaa Ho Kabhii, Gam Kii Shaam Se
Guzaren hain ——
Ham Vo Naheen Jo Pyaar Mein Rokar Guzaar Dein
Parachhaain Bhii Ho Terii To Thokar Se Maar Dein
Vaaqif Hain Ham Bhii Kuub Har Ek Intaqaam Se
Guzarein hain —— (Rafi)
He tries to woo Mala, sister in law of Roopa, so that he can make Roopa zealous. Satish and Roopa become helpless when they get to know that Mala has started liking Shankar. Roopa knows very well that Shankar does not love Mala and he is just using her and playing with her sentiments. She knows very well that Shankar is taking revenge. She asks Shankar to forget everything happened in past but Shankar is not finished yet. He teases them more. It’s a treat to watch a poisonous smile on the face of Dilip Kumar when he fuels the anger in Satish and Roopa.
But Shankar is not sadist like Ramesh or clever and selfish like Satish. Deep down he is still lover of Roopa and more he gives pain to Roopa more he becomes sad. In his utter hopeless situations, his emotions are expressed through the song, sung by Rafi
Koii Saagar Dil Ko Bahalaataa Naheen
Bekhudii Mein Bhii Qaraar Aataa Naheen Koi Saagar …….
Main Koi Patthar Naheen Inasaan Huun
Kaise Kah Duun Gham Se Ghabaraataa Naheen
Koi Saagar ………
Kal To Sab The Kaaravaan Ke Saath
Aaj Koi Raah Dikhalaataa Naheen
Koi Saagar ……….
Zindagee Ke Aaine Ko Todh Do
Isamen Ab Kuchh Bhii Nazar Aataa Naheen
Koi Saagar ………….
Soon the passion of his revenge is lost and he is a broken lover. He confesses before Mala that he never loved her. Situations again take turn and after so many events lovers are met.
Dilip Kumar is master in playing the role of a lover and here he has three different phases in the life of Shankar to show his command over craft of acting and he does it with élan. When role demands a restrained behaviour, he follows the boundaries and when he has to bring out the grey shades he brings the necessary villainous touch in his performance and when he has to show the sadness of a broken lover then also he is the performer.
Pran plays the Ramesh and he has got very meaty role and he lives up to his reputation of a fantastic actor. His role is of a devil and he comes before the audience as a devil. He does not evoke any sympathy. He knows very well that he has ruined his life and yet when Shankar comes to request that now he is also a rich and Ramesh should marry Roopa with him, he sees another opportunity to humiliate Shankar. While he is dying, even then he does not treat Shankar well. Pran made lively the character Ramesh.
Waheeda Rehman plays the role of Roopa and her beauty, womanhood and acting ability all give life to the role. She has many shades in the character to show off and she utilizes the opportunity. She matches well Dilip Kumar and Pran.
Rehman plays the role of Satish and it has been a cake walk for him to play such roles. He is rich, suave, charming and yet very clever and knows very well when to move and what to move ahead. Rehman always gives his valuable performance in such roles and he does it here also. He looks every bit of Satish.
Rani plays the role of greedy courtesan Tara Bai and she shows her acting talent in this small role.
Shyama too plays very well the role of Mala.
It’s a good adaptation of English novel and story has been given enough does of Indianization to make it indigenous product.
There are two more songs in the film one in Lata’s voice
Phir Terii Kahaanii Yaad Aai Phir Teraa Fasaanaa Yaad Aayaa
Phir Aaj Hamaarii Aankhon Ko
Phir Aaj Hamaarii Aankhon Ko, Ek Kvaab Puraanaa Yaad Aayaa
Phir Terii Kahaanii Yaad Aai …
And a Mujra song, sung by Asha
dil harne wale aur bhee hain sarkar diwane aur bhee hain
ham par hee chale kyon teer-i-nazar mehfil mein nishane aur bhee hain.
Naushad gives the music and Shakeel Badayuni provides the lyrics. Those who hate songs in hindi films, please listen and watch Guzaren hain…. and Koi Saagar….. to realize how music and song can bring more impact on screen.
In terms of performances, DDDL is a nice film, inspired by an English novel and dealing with love, hate, revenge, relationships, union, separation and sadness etc.

in year 94-95, erm, a film channel called ‘etc’ used to show this film once a week in morning and i always used to watch it before i went to the school. but i do not remember anything about the movie. all i remember is a factory and a union.. or am i thinking of a different movie. i am pretty sure it was this movie.
HG:No it cant be same film. If its Dilip Kumar’s film then either you have Paigham or Sagina in mind because Majdoor is relatively new film and you can remember it. It definietly can not be DDDL. There is no factory and union in the film. Its purely social love hate drama as I wrote inspired by english Novel Wuthering Heights. DK plays role inspired by Heithclif.:)

Does anyone know if the director of Dil Diya Dard Liya had seen the Hollywood 1940 version of the film with Merle Oberon in the Cathy role that Waheeda Rehman plays? Also, does anyone know if Waheeda Rehman knew who Merle Oberon was - Merle Oberon was a Hollywood actress who spent her life covering up the fact that she was from India and in some of Waheeda Rehman’s publicity stills she is posed in ways that are remarkably reminiscent of Oberon’s own publicity portraits.
Any help is welcome!!
Joyce: Hi,
Are not you relative of Hollywood actress Merle Oberon? Perhaps you had made some enquiry earlier also.
Its quite possible that Director A R Kardar had seen Wyler’s version of Wuthering Heights.
Posters of DDDL were perhaps designed by Achrekar and perhaps publicity stills also, but I am not very sure.
Veteran Journalist Bunny Ruben may be very helpful for you. You may google search for his contacts. Guessing that he was associated with pubilicity of the film. and if not then he is author of the book “Dilip Kumar: Star Legend of Indian Cinema - The Definitive Biography”. He has been close to Dilip Kumar.
Hope it helps you.
RK, I’m not sure and may be totally wrong here… but Bunny Ruben passed away sometime ago.
Oz:
Thanks for this correction. I could not follow news of Bunny Reuben’s demise.
With his death India lost one of the best journalist who covered cinema and cine personalities. He was quite close to Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar and wrote wonderful books on them along with biography of Pran “And Pran”.
