Discoveries of 2008

Mainak   | Movies, Talking-Points | December 29, 2008 at 12:35 pm

2008 was a very low key year as far as music & movies goes in my life. Esp after last 2 years of marathon movie watching & discovering music. But I would still go ahead & write a diary similar to last years Discoveries of 2007.

Books -
I read a lot of books this year. I tried to read of lot from the Random’s 100 list.

1) Animal Farm – George Orwell
This was probably the most satisfying book I read last year. What happens to Boxer brought tears to my eyes. Thats very rare in my life. I can’t believe I had not read this book till now.

2) The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald
A year when Hollywood got curious about Fitzgerald, I finally read his classic. Loved it.

3) Bend in the River – V S Naipaul
Naipaul at his detached cynical best.

4) GUNS GERMS & STEEL – Jared Diamond
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guns%2C_Germs%2C_and_Steel
Pulitzer winning work. The story of civilization from a Biologists perspective. Highly reccomended.
Why Eurasians conquered the world? And How?(The answer is diseases).
Why Man could not domesticate Leopards(My fav part of the book). Etc etc

5) Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes: John Pierson
Of all the filmy books I read this year, this was the one I enjoyed most this year.

MUSIC

I’m gonna list the songs that played on my car/laptop more than anything.

MGMT – Electric Feel (Justice Remix)
Dizzee Rascal feat. Calvin Harris – Dance Wiv Me
Friendly Fires – Paris (ft. Au Revoir Simone) (Aeroplane Remix)
My Morning Jacket – Evil Urges
The Rolling Stones – You Can’t Always Get What You Want (2008 Soulwax Remix)
Bon Iver – Skinny Love
Sam Sparro – Black and Gold
Mark Farina – Dream Machine
Death Cab for Cutie – I will posses your heart
Amadou & Mariam – Sabali

Albums I liked

Sneha Khanwalkar – Oye Lucky Lucky Oye (Soundtrack)
I think Oye Lucky Soundtrack was the best album made in 2008 anywhere in the world.

MGMT – Oracular Spectacular definitely was the album of the year for me. It was the sound of 2008. It pushed Electronic music into the living rooms of American kids. The JUSTICE REMIX of Electric feel is the most played song on radio in LA. And it just keeps growing on me.

Moby – Last Night
A long awaited album. Although the magic of Moby is gone, this album had quite a good songs. Ooh Yeah & I Love to Move in here are my fav so far.

Gnarles Barkley – The Odd Couple

A Great second is so rare these days. Also the only big live show I went too. Gnarles Barkley to me is the best thing in Pop Music right now.

Lil Wayne – Tha Carter III
My Hip-hop artist of 2008. His SNL version of Lollilop just blew me away.

But most importantly I loved a britney Spears song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4NayXtzsBo
Piece of Me is the song. If you had told me that I wouldn’t be able to stop listening to a Britney song I would have laughed at you. Also I also think this is the best & most personal lyrics a Britney songs can get.

FILMS -

I watched very few films this year. One film that stands out for recommendation would be Everything Is Illuminated.
It was the best film I saw in 2008.

Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye was my fav film of 2008. Mainly because of how Dibankar showed us Lucky’s life. My friend after watching the film said, there was something lacking in the film. My 1st thought was that it didn’t have the standard “Arc” type 3 act story. And thats why it felt odd sometimes. As if questioning how this scene is moving the film. Because we are so conditioned of the standard stuff. It took some time to realize what Dibankar had created. And the music was amazing. After watching the documentary of how Sneha did the music, there was no question in my mind that this was the album of the year also.

I also liked DASVIDANYA a lot. The movie had the most heart of all the movies of 2008. This year again belonged to Vinay.
ROCK ON was something that exceeded my expectation. Is Farhan Akhtar the most talented man in Bollywood right now? He might not be the best singer, best actor, best director, but he is good at everything he does.

HELLBOY II was my fav film of the year so far. This was the year when I watched a lot of SuperHero film. Even THE FANTASTIC FOUR. This was the year of Superhero films.

The best scene of the year so far also goes to Hellboy. Those were the best moments inside the theater this year. Even more so than Jokers presence in Dark Knight.

2008 movies that I missed and will watch this month would be –
The Class ,Man on Wire, Waltz with Basir, Gomorrah, Che, Wendy & Lucy, Happy Go Lucky, The Wrestler & WALL-E.

TELEVISION

I watched the 2nd best show on Cable TV ever –
THE WIRE
Now that the show is over, I urge you guys to watch this series. Also you cannot call yourself a cinema lover & not know who OMAR is.

I also discovered what was the big deal about SIX FEET UNDER. Probably the best Pilot of a TV show I have seen. Alan Ball is one of my favorite writer/director right now.

2008 was also the year of SNL. Esp Tina Hey & Amy Poehler.
My fav SNL video of last year
Dick in a Box –

One of the major discoveries for me was Stop Motion Graffiti films. Check out this artist Blu from Buenos Aires

Like last year there are so much i probably don’t remember right now. I will add them as we go along.

What did you like & discover in 2008?

This year, I discovered the Blues. BB King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy etc. Then there were these film festivals, so many films, I will forget their names probably, but the experience will never fade. Books I hardly read, but I did get hooked to this film site, mooninthegutter.com. I didn’t do anything drastic in my film appreciation, same old films, DVD’s, world cinema.
In TV,I discovered Family Guy, Adult Swim, Weeds, Craig Ferguson. Then I discovered some new aspects of comedy, stand up comics and shit, and ya, the year I discovered Will Farrell, Jean Pierre Melville, Bert Haanstra, Tarsem, Jules Dassin, True Romance, Kevin Smith, Judd Apatow, Amit Trivedi, and then some animation stuff.

  6. Well interesting year for me. Well the main discovery i made this year at a personal level, were there are things you can never take for granted.

I also discovered the meaning of terms like “sub prime”, “investment banking”, and also discovered, that i was not too bad in understanding the financial sector, which was to date Greek and Latin for me.

As a hard core techie, my favorites this year have been Google Chrome and Apple’s IPhone. Not many new movie web sites, it was still Wiki, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes for any movie info i needed. You Tube became a part and parcel of my life, as i used to analyze a scene, check out a technique or just listen to a song i missed out.

    All of Michael Crichton’s novels

Such a Long Journey, Tales from Firozsha Bag-Rohinton Mistry

@Mainak – thanks. I listen to both Pandora and Last.fm. Any artists you recommend?

I saw your list of music and artists. You are mostly into indie stuff, is it? Do you like Regina Spektor? I know it sounds school-girlish but I liked her songs much when heard in a bohemian tea-shop. It’s mostly anti-folk bubble-gum pop.

Other Indie stuff I carried over from 07 was ‘Of Montreal’. ‘Disconnect the Dots’ was struck in my mind like anything. So was the ‘Banquet – Mike Skinner remix’ of ‘Bloc Party’.

Since you are already into folk, you must also be knowing about Iron & Wine. Now he has gone quite mainstream but I have been a fan of his lowkey, recorded in garage sound since the first album. He definitely reminds me of Dylan and Simon & Garfunkle’s work, than Nick Drake’s (less melancholy).

Not surprisingly, my two favorite movies discovered in ‘08 were old musicals – ‘School of Rock’ and ‘West Side Story’. After Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, I fell in love with Katherine Hepburn (it’s something with me and the dames from the b&w era). She is so fluent, bubbly and vivacious in ‘Bringing up Baby’. Kind of reminded me of Juhi Chawla in her heydays.

Do we talk extensively here about music? Sounds crazy since this is a Cinema forum, but I can just go on and on, both talking and listening to about music!! :)

@Magik – What was the problem with SEL’s score of Rock On!! ? Vishal – Shekhar make mostly hiphop, club-lounge and pop music. If you heard Pentagram’s last efforts (Was it called ‘Up’?) the music was electronica. Not to say that they couldn’t have done a good job, but there is no credential that should make you believe that they were a better choice. Which means… aapki baat mein dum hai, par masala-dosa bahot kam hai..

Gotan Project’s LA VIGUELA is the one of the 10 best songs ever in the history of mankind.

2Wicky is just my kind of song. Rest of it is ok. But yeah 2Wicky is too sexy.

    Hey Mainak,

Last year I forced myself to read a lot more than I heard and watched, so yes, that was a part of my reading list. I enjoyed most, but if I have to pick just one author it’ll have to be Tim Dorsey. His Torpedo Juice is excessively funny, wacked out. Very different, madcap sort of writing.

Talvin’s Ha remains a fierce favourite; it’s absolute top notch. In the same family, Midieval Punditz (Midieval Timez) is also worth a mention. This year, Smoke Signals by Ashutosh Pathak/Dhruv Ghanekar was also good.

Movies I didn’t get on to as most of them were from the PFC recommendation list, so there.

But again, I’ll have to come back to Oye Lucky Lucky Oye soundtrack; can’t get enough of it.

    Line of the year?

Jeda apna munda hai na Lucky… single hai ke bachelor?

I had discovered Midival Punditz from monsoon wedding. Thats when I went crazy on this Electronic Infian Fusion music. Started with Buddha Bar sesions on Manali. Thats when I left Arena Rock & Heavy Metal forever. Karunesh, Kars Kale, Talvin Singh.
There was acompilation CD of Asian Undeground called EASTERN UPRISING. It was the best. I don’t think you can get that CD anymore. Every song from that CD has ended up in movie OSTs.
I’m trying to find smoke signals online. Can anyone help me?

    BTW
Ashutosh Pathak/Dhruv Ghanekar are the Fathers of Sneha & Amit Trivedi. Remember Bombay Boys. They did with Kaizad Gustad what Amit is doing right now. Its too bad there was no other director with a sense of experimenting during that time other than Kaizad.
I still rate the OST of BOOM as the best of our times.

Didn’t Dhruv compose Drona off-late? Bombay Boys was good, but it didn’t have more than 3-4 original songs in it. Boom, never heard.

Boom was mainly done by Sandeep Chowta at the peak of his Lounge Music phase. Check out the song ZINDAGI by Sukhwinder. Its sad that not many people have heard that masterpiece. Buy the CD right away. its worth every penny.

    Hey Tushar / Mainak,

I had also noticed Dhruv/Ashutosh’s work in Bombay Boys only. Their range simply shocked me. I was always on their trail post that but they weren’t doing much.

I decided to pick Smoke Signals after Rolling Stones (India) profiled it.

It’s available at the stores of Landmark and Planet M. I got it through E-bay, India. You can also try the website of Dhruv/Ashutosh’s recored label Blue Frog:
