DOORDARSHAN- DOWN MEMORY LANE

Yes, I know this site is for cinema only, but Doordarshan is the birth place of some of the todays successful personalities of Indian cinema so Let myself be 10 years old and get back to late 80s and early 90s- the era of Doordarshan. The one and only daily entertainment dose of every Indian.
Lets check out some goods and bads of Doordarshan and our memory power.

Most of the serials were of 13 episodes and so people were associated with character for 2-3 months and it made more concentrated and sensible serials.

- Ramayan and Mahabharat- how can we mention doordarshan without Ramayan and Mahabharat? Literally there was Curfew like situation on Sunday mornings when these two epics were telecasted. These serials made life of Arun Govil (Ram), Mukesh Khanna (Bhisma), Punit issar (duryodhan), Rupa Ganguli (Draupadi) , Dipilka(Sita) etc.. Though technically poor, these two serials created mass histeria for TV selling. People used to do pooja of TV before starting of these serials. Harish Bhimanis voice as main samay hoon made great impact in Mahabharat. I liked Dara singh as Hanuman very much.
- Malgudi Days- this serial needs a separate post. Based on R K Narayans book, made by Shankar Naag , this serial is the best of all time serials I have ever seen. and the title theme taana na taana na na I can remember it today also with R K Laxmans sketches.
- Udaan- based on Kiran Bedis life, Kavita chaudhary was lead actress and serial was quite popular. Story of a girls journey to become an IPS officer.
- Daane Anaar Ke one middle class family wins lottery and how behaviour of family and people related with them changes a nice story. I can recall only Neena gupta. Perhaps Gulzar wrote the title song kissa hai kahaani hai paheli hai
- Mirza Ghalib- Jab Gulzar, Jagjit singh and Naseeruddn shah saath me ho to poochna hi kya?. I was too immature to understand this serial. So not much memory associated with this serial.
- Humlog, Buniyaad- I was too small at that time, cant remember much except Dada Monis speech at the end of every episode.
- Nukkad- Dilip Dhawan, khopdi, and other popular actors born with this serial. Directed by Aziz mirza this serial was quite populat at that time.
- Cartoons- Ducktales, Telespin after Chanakya at 10:30 these two cartoons were telecasted. I can recall Uncle screwz only.
- Junglebook -I can recall some characters Mowglee, Bagira, Sherkhan. Sherekhans voice was given by Nana Patekar and music was given by todays genius director Vishal Bhardwaj and lyrics was by Gulzaar saab. Remember that amar song jungle jungle baat chali hai pataa chala hai, chaddi pehen ke phool khila hai.. Akira Kurosawas name was also there in titles. Dont for what purpose.
- Stoneboy- Master Ankur was as stone boy and was living on hills and a group of students goes for picnic and then bring stone boy with them
- Sigma- a sci-fi serial based on space and space shuttles.
- Chandrakanta- started very well but lost interest after introduction of too many characters and complicated story. Shahbaaz khan and Shikha swaroop was lead actors. I can recall two names of citiesNaugadh and Vijay gadh. But serial gave fame to Kroor Singh played by Akhilendra Mishra.
- Chanakya- a truly classic serial by Dr. Chandraparakash Dwivdi (director of Pinjar) also made life of Pamod moutho(Villain of Khalnayak)
- Vikram Vetaal again technically poor serial by Ramanad Sagar before Ramayan. But I liked lot as a child. Arun Govil played role of king Vikram
- Vyomkesh Bakshi The best detective serial I have ever seen. Rajat kapoor( Gandhiji in Making of mahatama and seen in almost every film of Shyam Benegal like zubeida, Suraj ka saatvan ghoda, Sardar Begam) was as Vyomkesh bakshi in dhoti and kurta and K K Raina as his assistant much much better than todays CID.
- Talaash- This serial was based on the search of some person. Cant remember much. But main actor was Alok Naath and directed by great Hrishikesh Mukerjee.
- Rangoli- countless Sunday mornings started with Rangoli. no song was repeated.
- Tenaliraman- Birbal of south India – played by Vijay Kashyap, had pure entertainment.
- Phir wohi talaash- directed by Lekh tendon. I can recall only Madan Jain (one of the character in Ankush) and Nilima Azim (Shahid kapurs mother). The story was a small town boy comes to metro and falls in love with a rich and sophisticated girl. Virendra Saxena played father of Madan Jain.
- Muzrim Haajir- Nutan was lead actress and Virendra singh and Navani parihaar was introduced in this serial. serial had Bengali background and I can remember goon goona, goon goona, goon goona re goon goona
- Nupur- directed by Hema malini and lead actor was Sudesh Berry and had background of classical dance and music.
- Circus- when shahrukh khan was top star of TV he did this serial with Renuka Shahane. I think it was directed by Aziz Mirza. Also had lots of actors of Nukkad.
- Tipu sultan- this serial created lots of hype before its telecast and sanjay khan invested lots of money and hard work in it. Shahbaaz Khan became quite popular as Hyder Ali which bagged him a film as a hero Naachne waale Gaane waale directed by B. Subhash with Kadarkhan, Shakri kapoor and Shiba.
- Vishwamitra- created lots of hype as this was second serial of Mukesh khanna after Mahabharat. Bhanupriya played role of Urvashi.
- Kille ka rahasya- dont recall much, but I used to close my eyes when a big Punja was coming closer to camera.
- 1234- a child detective serial. Can remember the song ek do teen char, chro mikar saath chale to karde chamatkar
- Lok lok ki baatein, Katha saagar- serials based on different stories by different writers.
- Sauda- made by B.R. chopra and story was associated with freedom movement. Can remember its title song yeh zindagi hai ek sauda
- Chitrahaar- evey Wednesday and Friday at 80 clock with dinner.
- Karamchand- Pankaj kapoor as karamchand (with carrot) and Sushmita mukerjee as kitty. directed by Pankaj Parashur.
- Jugalbandhi- after the success of karamchand this serial was started. One of the detective was Radha Sheth and other male detective cant remember.
- Fauji- First serial of SRK which made him quite popular on TV.
- Tamash- directed by Govind Nihalani, the serial had huge starcast like ompuri, amrishpuri, deepa sahi etc. created some controvery also.
- Manzil apni apni- lead actors were Mohan bhandari and Radha sheth. a young man goes to a village to make it a better place.
- Fatichar- Pankaj Kapur as fatichar. First time I saw people leaving in huge govt. water pipes. It was humorous light comedy serial.
- Mrignayani- the story was- a king attracted by beauty of a girl. Amol palekar directed this serial and Pallavi Joshi was lead actress.
- Humraahi this serial gave fame to Writer Manohar shyaam joshi and Himani Shivpuri. First serial having external marital affairs.
- Surbhi first interesting and entertaining information based programme. Renuka Sahane was introduced in surbhi. Sidhdharth Kak and Renuka both were host in this programme. Renukas hair cut and colgate smile were quite popular. This programme created question and answer contest first time on TV.
- Guniram- story of a villager who comes to city and makes mistakes every day. Rakesh bedi played role of Guniram.
- Mr. Yogi- an NRI comes to India in search of his bride. His meeting with different girls with different backgrounds and then comedy emerges. Mohan Gokhle was Mr. Yogi and director was Ketan Mehta. I cant forget the last episode where ice-cream was throwing in the party.
- Mungerilal ke haseen sapne- talented Raghuvir Yaadav as Mungherilal used to see dreams of a person whichever attracts him. Perhaps director was Prakash Jha.
- Kakkaji kaheen- Om puri was kakkaji. A comedy serial and kakkaji was used to laugh at the end of every sentence.
- Bharat ek khoj-based on Pt. Jawaharlal Nehrus book Discovery of India, directed by Shyam Benegal. I cant recall much because serial was too heavy and I am not at that level that digest this kind of serial. In one episode Aloknath played role of Swami Vivekanand.
- Lekhu- Lekhu (mohan gokhle) is villager with tremendous talent and was used by a professor ( I think aloknath)
- Deviji- starring Annu kapoor and swaroop sampat- telecasted in afternoon.

Then there was lots of serials like Ekkai dahai sekda, Nirmala, Gaurav, Param veer chakra, Lahun ke phool, Intezaar, Dil Dariyaa, Honee Anhonee.. which were quite popular.

remember some video songs like
- Mile sur mera tumhara- almost every day this song was shown. I saw it only for the scene where AB, Jeetendra and Mithun was shown together.
- Sun sun mere nanhe sun- a video directed by subhash ghai at time of 1992 riots. It had Jackie shroff, Rajnikanth, chiranjeevi and bunch of starts popular at that time.

And at last some irritating things on doordarshan…
- The boards- Rookavat ke liye khed hai.
- Same old faces in the news every day. I remember some of the names like Shammy Narang , Sarla Maheswari, Salma Sultan..
- Nritya ka Akhil Bhartiya Karyakram
- Focus- a discussion programme in English based on current issues – I never seen its any episode but after some popular serial it was telecasted so I knew it.

So that was my memories related with Doordarshan.- after Star TV and Zee tv came in 1992, Indian people hungry for entertainment turned to cable tv channels and I was one of them.

Jungle Book, Malgudi Days, Akbar & Birbal and Vikram Vetal were my favorite as well. But I did not see any of these Doordarshan programs on Doordarshan; I saw those programs on one of the cable channel :d

Do you guys remember Udan Choo?

    2. atray on June 29th, 2007 12:27 am

      I remember

    3. darthc0der on June 29th, 2007 1:17 am

the male detective with radha seth was Benjamin Geelani – i think later on in the show he’s shot dead and replaced by someone else – don’t remember who though?

you did forget to mention Star Trek, The Living Planet, What’s the Good Word?, Quiz Time, India This Week & the classic Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi. I think re-runs of YJHZ are now being shown on Star Plus every sat(?) at 11AM – not sure of the exact schedule.

but a nice post. brings back lots of memories.

      Hi,
What about Yeh jo hai zindagi,Tehkikaat.

    7. Shailesh Limbachiya on June 29th, 2007 1:43 am

tehkikaat was telecasted in 1995 when zee, sony, star were already in the race.
i have mentioned nirmala at the end of post. the lead role played by ananyan khare (seen in devdas-2002).

    8. Justin John on June 29th, 2007 2:13 am

When I saw this post first I thought maybe it was a copy paste from other blogs. But maybe you must have done research from other sites.

Wanted to add another programme from the 90’s, “Rang- a- Rang”. It was a filmi programme which used to come at 11 pm on Thursdays. Divya Dutta was the anchor. I used to go to sleep at 10 and get up at 11 again just to watch this programme. Even the same for Mile Sur Mera Tumhara. I think it was on Tuesdays.

Some of my other favorites were Gul Gulshan Gulfam, Wagle Ki Duniya, Giant Robot, Street Hawk, Glitterball, etc.

There was another cartoon. Forgot the name. But it had a beautiful title song “Hawa Meetti Tu aaja”. Someting like that

    9. RK on June 29th, 2007 2:29 am

Shailesh: Thanks for taking us in past.
Before DD Delhi started telecasting serials, Lucknow Doordarshan had telecasted a serial “Beebi Natiyon wali”. It can be said as grandmother serial of most of the social theme based serials, like Nukkad etc. I forgot the name of the veteran actor who played the role of Mirza in that, some Mishra and he played a muslim charcater and his diction of urdu and dialogue delivery was a major attraction. and his long ears resembling Gandhi ji and Budha. He became people’s own family member, not to forget the lady actress who played lead role.
Then there was Dadi Ma jagi, where dadi wakes up after sleeping in Coma for years and all the new developments are a problem for her. a nice comedy.
-1984 saw India’s first INSAT sattelite launching, Rakesh Sharma going in space and starting of serial Hum Log (ofcourse year is infamous for operation blue star, assasination of Mrs Gandhi and then riots), Khandan and Ye Jo hai Jindagi.

Several serials in morning of Sunday along with some english serials like “Different Strokes”

and a unique serial was there, something with title “Himalaya —-” Neer saw any other serial like that.

Then there were two serials based on good hindi literature, Kab Tak Pukaroon (based on Rangey Raghav’s book) which had Pankaj Kapoor’s yet another mile stone performance and Raag Darbari(based on Srilal Shukla’s book)
Then one was the serial,”Aisa Bhi Hota hai” where they used to show us some strange things either happening in world or existing in world.
was it from Monica Lal and Gopal Sharma?
Then there was Trishna based on Pride and Prejudice, serial was better than Gurinder Chadha’s film on same book, Bride and Prejudice.
Vinod Pande’s Air Hostess and Reporter.
Kavita Chadhary’s Udaan was not based on life of Kiran Bedi but on the life of her own sister Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, who is an IPS officer and married to an IAS officer Mr Bhattacharya. If you recall Shekhar Kapoor had played role of IAS officer in the serial.
Then there was Neem ka Perh, bringing one of the finest performances from Pankaj Kapoor.
Balwant Gargi’s Sanjha Chulha. then Doosra Keval which also starred SRK.
a serial was there which presented first time Nutan on TV.
A special chitrahar was there which was presented by celebrities like Shekhar Kapoor, Javed Akhtar etc. they used to show their favourite songs and with reasons why they liked these songs.
One was the serial where Javed saab used to tell about Hindi cinema. for ex. he told that V Shantaram took 10-11 minute long scene in a stretch as he had no film role to spare as it used to be imported and he did it with fixing the camera and artists came in front of camera and went when other actor had to come. It was such along shot and he did not have resources to waste a single inch of footage.
Then there were some serials based on Premchand’s book like Nirmala. Karmabhumi etc.
Then based on Kashmir a serial was there, Gul Gulshan Gulfam where utterly glamorous and husky voiced Radha Seth played role of wife of Parikshit Sahni.
Not to forget, Ranjit Kapoor’s Chekhov ki dunia.
and BR Chopra’s Khajana, where he used to present stories based on world wide literature. and Ek Kahani, somewhat similar serial.
and then Kabira, where Annu Kapoor nicely played the role of Kabir.
some patriotic serials. one by Manoj Kumar, one by Dheeraj Kumar (Kahan gaye wo log?) and ParamVeer Chakra by Chetan Anand.
and there was a serial in mid 80s, Kachi Kachi Dhoop. Serial was directed by Amol Palekar and it presented a young Bhagya Shri and daughter of Amol Palekar. Bhagya Shri had many young fans and one of the reason Maine Pyar Kya was a instant hit was this also. More than Salman Khan, who was nobody at that time,. people knew Bhagya Shri and she had disappared from the scene after the serial and when news came she has been casted by Suraj Barjatya for his debut film, it revoked memories of old admirers.
Then Satyajit Rays/Sandip Rays Prof Shonku.

And many more, which may take space equivalent to your article.
thanks Shailesh for this memory trip
      :)

    10. Shailesh Limbachiya on June 29th, 2007 2:44 am

No research was done for thia post. This is just type on pc from memory.
sorry i forgot these two wagle ki duniya(anjan srivastava and bharti achrekar) light hearted comedy
and Gul gulshan gulfam- story with background of kashmir and house boats. had beautiful title song “muskurati subah ki aur gungunati shaam ki, ye kahaani gul ki hai gulshan ki hai gulfam ki…”

    11. Karthik on June 29th, 2007 2:51 am

More than anything I really miss two serials from Doordarshan – Katha Saagar and Darpan. Both used short stories by famous Indian/ international writers and got them enacted by very talented TV actors in a simple, dignified and unpretentious way. Plus, it lasted 30 minutes and was perfect for short, absorbed viewing. I remember seeing stories by O Henry, Bernard Shaw amongst a lot of north and south Indian writers.

This was a treasure trove of literature that I still miss amidst the silly serial-explosion of these days. The content has completely gone for a toss now.

    12. Justin John on June 29th, 2007 2:54 am

      @RK

Himalay Darshan. That’s the serials name. Used to get scared watching it.

    13. RK on June 29th, 2007 3:33 am

Justice: thanks for mentioning full name of the serial. yes it was Himalaya Darshan. why you got scared watching?
It even had musical sound of flowing water and so many other natural sounds:)

    14. Phoenixnu on June 29th, 2007 4:03 am

n on sundays they used to show award winning regional films…almost every possible langugae…afternoon slot. never used to miss them. n nice work shaiesh.

    15. Shailesh Limbachiya on June 29th, 2007 4:23 am

RK, and also there was serial called “Mahanagar” in which shekhar kapoor was hero.
sorry i don’t Udaan was based on some other personality. but it was very well made serial.

Jyadeep, for yeh jo hai zindagi i can remmebr only it had satish shah and rakesh bedi.

I rememeber one serial where i think Irrfan Khan (haasil)was there and he played character of collector and was appointed in some hilly area or small town. can’t rememeber its name..

    16. dipankar giri on June 29th, 2007 4:52 am

can anybody tell me who gave the statement “rukavat ke liye khed hai….”

    17. jeeves on June 29th, 2007 4:59 am

The male detective with Radha Seth in Jugalbandhi was Tom Alter. I remember their crackling chemistry but the serial was taken off air quite abruptly.

There was Srikant based on Sarat Chandra’s book of the same name, with Farooq Shaikh as Srikant and I think Sujata Mehta played his childhood sweetheart. A very good adaptation of the book!

Anyone remembers Sai Paranjape’s serials? Ados Pados, I think, with lots of characters including Amol Palekar, Rameshwari etc.

And of course, there was the serial based on P G Wodehouse’s Leave it to Psmith, directed by Lilliput with Mazhar Khan, Anu Agarwal and Kiron Kher. Anyone remembers the name?

And was there something called sachchi kahaniyan or am I imagining it? crime stories, I think..

There was also Rajani which was quite a sunday staple.

Then there was another serial called PC aur computer or something like that about a supercomputer, which was aired on sundays…

I also wanted to add that in 1989 there was a month-long Director’s film festival where they aired all movies of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Raj Kapoor, Guru dutt et al every night..I remember the year because I gave my 12th board exams that year but did not miss a single movie! :)

Thanks, Sailesh. Really enjoyed this post!

    18. Sushant Srivastava on June 29th, 2007 5:06 am

      Few more:
Ajnabi:by Danny Denzogappa, quite a watch.
Junoon:Long running serial nice episodes, good interlinked stories and a nice title song
      “kisiko mohabbat ka hai junoon…”
Swabhimaan:Modern soap opera…ahead of its time..and major launchpad of Manoj Bajpai(as Suneel..I loved that character and Manoj was at his usual best) and Ashutosh Rana(as Tyagi).
Zameen Aasman:Another good serial by Mahesh Bhatt.
Kshitij yeh nahi:Starring Supriya Pilgaonkar, good story and a nice watch again.
Another serial with Nadira,Deepti Naval and Mona in the lead. Three ladies, at different stages of life, uniting. Good premise and nicely made.

after a crazy, rip-my-hair-apart kind of a morning ~X( this was the PERFECT post to calm me down and take me into another world.. thank you so much shailesh :) if this is from memory, then ^:)^ ^:)^

i think between your post and the comments, most of the shows i could think of were covered.. the only ones i don’t see are the public service announcements.. “ek, anek, aur ekta” being my most favourite

      http://youtube.com/watch?v=WpT3TqsNqBY

there was another similar-themed PSA with a school of small fish which scares away the bigger fish by uniting together in the shape of a really big fish.. can’t seem to find that online anywhere..

then i found another one about spreading rumours on youtube.. i don’t remember this one though..

      http://youtube.com/watch?v=_7sgEEqFjVI

another favourite show was “ek do teen char”.. a fun watch on sunday mornings about four friends who solve mysteries around the neighborhood..

and last but not least, FLOP SHOW!! i can’t talk about doordarshan and not mention this HILARIOUS sketch comedy show with jaspal bhatti at the helm.. the best part was the parody of classic hindi songs which would always play towards the end of the show with the episode as its theme.. some episodes of it can be found on youtube but i’d recommend anyone to buy the original DVD/VCDs as it’s just more fun that way, plus you get to own a piece of history, not to mention, fond memories :) italkies members can also rent flop show on DVD..

    20. ShawshankRedemption on June 29th, 2007 6:20 am

Shailesh, Thanks for the post. Loved it.

However you missed to mention “Discovery of India” directed by Shyam Benagal. I liked the Title Song very much and know more about Indian history from this episode then any history books.

Agree Malgudi Days, Chanakya and Vyomkesh Bakshi were the best in their respective categories.

You also missed Manoranjan and Yeh Jho hai zindagi.

    21. RK on June 29th, 2007 6:22 am

Shawshank: Shailesh mentioned Bharat ek khoj, this was the name of the serial, based on the Pt Nehru’s book “Discovery of India”. You missed man is hindi english ke chakkar mein:)

    22. ShawshankRedemption on June 29th, 2007 6:24 am

Striker!! Agree Flop show was the best satire show or spoof show. Jaspal Bhatti is the best.

I liked Sriman Srimathi (DD2) as well.
      :d

    23. ShawshankRedemption on June 29th, 2007 6:26 am

RK thanks for pointing that out. I guess I missed it.

Sorry guys. Was just trying to add more shows. I am definetely not complaining.

    24. Vasanbala on June 29th, 2007 7:16 am

      Did you people miss this????

Indradanush – Karan Johar’s debut as an actor. It also had Akshay Anand. It was about a group of kids who build a time machine. Somehow they amnage to make it work…..it borrowed a lot him back to the future too….and had topics like clones and stuff…..loved it….would not miss it for anything those days.

Then there was “PC -1008″ with Kanwaljeet in the lead. He played a havaldar who solves crimes.

Faster Fene – It had sumeet raghavan in the lead. It was about this teenage detective in the lines of 1234…..

Wah janab – Shekar Suman’s debut.

Hum Bambai Nahi Jayenge – contrary to popular belief Manoj Bajpai made his debut in this serial. It is about a group of theatre artists who resolve to stay true to theatre and not run away to films

    25. Vasanbala on June 29th, 2007 7:22 am

I used to love this too. “Kya Banoge Munna”. Quite ahead of it’s times. It was about a small kid and the pressures on him to achieve at a very young age. It had Govind Namdeo.

The title song went like. “kya banoge munna…mummy kehti bano doctor…papa kehte afsar…engineer banjaoo bhaiyya..behna kehti aksar…bacche ke khel-kood mein bolo bache ka kay hissa…iss sawal ke hi jawab mein kar de shuru yeh kissa…kya banoge…munna….”

    26. Vasanbala on June 29th, 2007 7:25 am

Stone boy had master ankur yeh as the stone oy…it also had master manjunath [Swami of Malgudi Days] play the boy who finds him and gets him home…it was in news those days as it was entirely shot in Mauritius.

    27. Vasan Bala on June 29th, 2007 7:27 am

      and before i forget….SAILESH THANKS A TON FOR THIS>>>>SUPERB SUPERB>>>visuals just running thru my mind….thanks a ton….damn good…

    28. RK on June 29th, 2007 7:43 am

VB: ya Wah Janab was a quite good comedy serial with full flavour of Lucknow. It had Kiran Juneja against Shekhar Suman and Shailendra Goyal played friend of Shekhar Suman. Then Shekhar was in one more serial “Teen Varsha”, based on Bhagwati Charan Verma’s novel with same title.
DD used to show a serial Alpha Plus also on Sunday which was good preparation for those who wished to appear in NDA or IMA.

      @Honhaar Goonda
Do you guys remember Udan Choo?

I believe you are talking about the children film udan chhoo (with baune actors and johny walker as inspector) which was a regular feature on DD those days (afternoon film).. The film is available on VCD

This one deserves a standing ovation, Shailesh. =d> too bad you cant see me standing.
anyone who has been through the tiresome long wait for that one serial that will give you things to talk about in that 5 minute break between the history and the english class the next day in school, will vouch for the litmus paper effect a mere mention of any of those names conjures.
as I look back, i realise these serials were part of the Indian psyche, hindi mein bolein to ye hamaare vichaaro aur maanaspatal par rache base hain. you simply cant study the 90’s without talking about them. whether it be the old school simplistic tele of the early era, where the themes largely circled around a family and its petty issues, or the innocent face of sci-fi timelessly captured in those eternal words- space city sigma. i can go on how each serial has memoried attached to it, when i close my eyes i see a faded collage made up of buniyaad, humlog, guchcha, spiderman, he man, street hawk, surabhi, aisa bhi hota hai, ulta pulta, circus, flop show, mungerilal, phatichar, mr yogi, inkaar, malgudi days, karamchand, tehquiqaat, rajini, palaash ke phool, those brilliant bengali adaptations(one featured the immortal song, “aur ek shaam maine tere naam likh di”, kile ka rahasya, fauji, swaabhimaan, zameen aasmaan, junoon, yug….

seems a distant reality now, but also leaves you with immense sense of irony, technology vs ingenuity, means vs ends, imagination vs consumptive entertainment…

    35. Nitin Shitole on June 29th, 2007 3:05 pm

There were very good 13-episode serials from DDC (Delhi Doordarshan Center) like
      1) Mita Vasisht’s ‘Pachpan Khambe Laal Deewarein’ and
2)the one related to the life of an IAS officer who got posted to some disturbed place and how he transforms the situation. Don’t remember the name of the serial and the name of the lead actor as well, but still remember his face, a fair guy with mustache. Never saw him again anywhere. The main attraction was his kinda soliloquies on the system, society, culture.

Thanks Shailesh for remembering that nostalgic period of DD.

    38. Machchar on June 30th, 2007 5:54 am

Well, this article really took me down the memory lane.

My sundays used to start with Mickey & Donald show, then He-Man, Rajini, and other serials and finally in the afternoon, “Nonstop nonsense”!! That was the most funniest ever!

I even used to watch UGC programmes with complete attention!! haha! Chitrahaar and Chitramala!

One thing I really miss is “Sorry for the Interruption” sign!

We used to have a Dyanora and then Weston Color TV!! haha!

The Dyanora had wooden sliding doors lol!! And the weston had just eight channels even though only one used to work!

Who can forget the time when we used to climb on the terrace umpteen number of times to adjust the antenna! And we used to shout down, “Ab dikh raha hain kya?”!! The city used to filled with Antennas with “Patangs” atkaod on them!

Well, I used to wonder when my grand parents used to say “Those good ol’ times!” haha! Now I know what “Good ol’ times” really mean!

Now I am motivated to write a script based on characters from the 80’s! haha!

We used to write dates in our notebook for every lesson. The farthest I could remember the date having written in my book was 1984! haha! Seems like centuries back! Kinda sad to know that the 1900’s have gone forever…

I wish Dr. Emmett Brown really exists.

    39. Machchar on July 1st, 2007 12:03 am

Okay, As I said, this post really inspired me so much that I actually was thinking a lot on how to bring back the charm of the awesome 80’s and make it into a story.

How about a teenage boy, who is obsessed with Ipods, RPGs, Internet and who is constantly glued to various TV channels and ignores his studies. His parents try a lot to make him understand that he is wasting his life in all these useless things but he does not listen. His mother gets fed up one day and prays to god to show some sense to her son.

Awesomely, one fine day when the boy wakes up, he finds himself transformed to the 80’s! His parents are the same, his friends are the same but everything is different. He finds out that his TV has only one channel, he discovers new games his friends play in the colony like Gilli Danda, street cricket, and the communication mode being only the land line, and not even the press button phones!

He starts enjoying shows like Ramayan and Buniyad, originally which he would never bother to watch!

Now he starts noticing a girl in his class whom in his “future life” never even bothered to give a second look, and how he tries to pursue her using traditional modes of communication like letters etc! After discovering the real joy of living, he finally has a choice, he can remain back in the 80’s or go back to the future! Will he or won’t he?

LOL, this is a thought and might look absurd, but who knows! Waiting for everyone’s comments on this!

    40. Machchar on July 1st, 2007 12:05 am

And noticing that our industry has not produced any teen flicks, which come out in thousands in Hollywood and are actually enjoyable, why not?

A few more to the list
subhah – first (probably only) which dealed with drugs

    42. striker on July 1st, 2007 5:11 pm

machchar.. kinda like a mix of “back to the future” and “the family man”.. or maybe the whole 80s portion of the film turns out to be a dream and he wakes up in the present wishing that he’d go back to the 80s? i like it.. would be a good film in the right hands.. i say script it!

    43. Machchar on July 1st, 2007 10:19 pm

Well striker, how about a 30 minute short film. But we need lot of resources, like old dyanora of ectv sets, around 10 to 20 old antennas, lot of old doordarshan footage, dresses of 80’s, round dial phones….

Any funding here guys? Some rich guy can be the angel for this film. I am thinking the budget would be atleast 3-4 lacs. Maybe presented by PFC ;) …I will approach NFDC to see if they like the idea and if they can fund partially.

P.S: Oz, does publishing here on PFC make any story automatically copyrighted?

    44. Machchar on July 1st, 2007 10:26 pm

And all the portions in the 80’s will be shown in Black & White!! haha! Sounds like fun!

I still can’t get subaah out of my mind.
It was based on the story by Thamizh writer Shivashankari.
      Brilliant performance by Salim Ghouse!!!

Even the ads were deadly in DD those days. particularly propaganda ads.
I remember how I freaked out at an ad for “No Smoking” which had a guy smoking with Thriller in the background. Soon thereafter he would turn in to a skeleton and I would get freaked out.

      A few more serials:

      >> Upanyas by Sekhar kapoor and Sriram Lagoo…it was the most boring serial ever

      >> there was one serial about bengali family…old widowed women has affair with young guy.

      >> one muslim serial fa*** where kalvaljeet was the hero..it was kind of pride and prejudice

      >> one comedy with Supriya pathak and her sister..and lilliput..dont remember its name too

    51. Satyendra Jha on October 23rd, 2007 4:26 am

Really awesome posts & comments. Covers almost all the serials i grew up on…. Well, i say almost, coz surprisingly no one has yet named NEEV, a serial on the boarding-school life as the backdrop. I still remember the fights between the two Houses and their charismatic House Captains…The theme song went like this.. dharti par…suraj ki..kiranein… rakhe neev ujaale ki… shiksha ke prakash se roshan… neev rahe vidyalay ki… PURE VINTAGE STUFF..

Again, my formative years had a staple diet of Krishi Darshan! Though completely boring for the city-dwellers like us, it still used to be watched coz there was nothing better to do after returning home exhausted from playing with friends and before dad would come back from office and summon kids to study.

Another great draw was Didi’s Comedy Show on Saturday afternoons. I remember leaving school early on those Saturdays on some pretext or the other, so that I could watch that insanely comical histrionics of the main protagonist.

    52. electrique on November 4th, 2007 10:07 pm

I landed here by accident and was completely fascinated by the post.

As a student who was taking his first lessons in geography, I wondered how people elsewhere lived and what they did. Serials like Katha Sagar actually opened a new window to the outside world for me. Every week I would look forward to the yet another dose of international literature. From Leo Tolstoy to O Henry, it was simply amazing. To my amazement, I realised that people and human relations are so universal. All the stories seem to carry a common thread.

I used to love Telematch a lot. It just seemed like a fantasy land. I remember dreaming about the vikram betal and getting mad at Vikram for not being able to answer – to what seemed to me a simple question! After a while, I got increasingly frustrated thinking if Vikram will ever get this nasty Betal…

I liked charitraheen a lot. Although, I feel so sorry that when these serial were telecast, I was too young and was not intellectually mature to make much sense. Now I yearn for them. I wonder if DD markets its ex programmes like the BBC?

I would also love to get my hands on Shyam Benegal’s Bharat Ek Khoj. I think it was a very serious work of art which most like me, at that time, neither understood or appreciated. I guess as a nation we have grown wiser and more mature to understand and appreciate art and culture. Sadly, some of brilliant works came well ahead of their times and were simply lost in oblivian.

Nice article. Its reminds you of all the good and nice moments one used to have in those years of black and white TV and those big antennas on once roofs to get clear cound & picture of your favourite serial.
The taste of people used to be very good in those times and most the programs were sensible as well as well made despite being not very financially stable.
when today i watch TV and look back in DD days , i feel how much the taste of public has gone bad as well as the kind of people who are making programmes today. It makes me feel sad as well as let me think abt intellectual poverty of todays directors and actors.None of them havent read any good literature and they are worse then people making pornography.
I hope some day those good old days of DD will come again on TV.

      Awww I miss Giant Robot!
Also I used to adore very affable DD presenters like Jyotsana. I found Mukta Shrivastav very funny but she was adorable too.
I have always believed that newsreader Ved Prakash was the one who wrote novels too. Could not verify that though.
I also remember Shammi Narang playing a rapist in a DD commissioned telefilm. It had Preeti Khare in it.
Also I used to watch a serial called Faster Fene… it had a young skinny boy with long legs playing some sorta detective!

    62. electrique on November 29th, 2007 6:55 pm

Judhajit that kanwaljeet starrer was PC1008. He played the role of a constable from Haryana.

I also used to watch Mahabharat and remember the days when newspapers were rife with stories that binny or some cloth mill was to supply extra fine fabric for Draupadi’s vastra haran scene.

There was a very funny DD commissioned soap called Meetha Jehar (sweet poison) on alcoholism. I think it was filmed in Bihar and had Padma Khanna in it. The climax was hilarious. This guy is an alcoholic and neglects his family. His kid is seriously ill while is parties on the money earned by his wife. The poor kid dies without treatment. He returns home …cries and then throws the dead kid into the river. BUT HANG ON!!!
His second kid was sleeping next to the dead one.. and he actually threw the LIVING one!!! the dead was still lying cold.

There was this character in the story, thin tense looking fellow holding his temples and saying ‘tension tension’ or some such thing. And another funny looking famous actress (with crooked teeth and wide grin) It was a hilarious story.. Anyone remember what I am talking about?

      I remember a few

Mr. & Mrs. – Jayant Kriplani and Archana Puran Singh in a gender role reversal

      Honi Anhonee – Strange Occurences

Kille ka Rahasya – Quality Scares

Ghar Jamai – Satish Shah Anant Mahadevan Chemistry

Appu Aur Pappu – A Kid and his elephant

Ados Pados – Started when 8:30 was prime time and 9 pm was news

Fireball XL5 – I wish, I was a Spaceman the Fastest Guy Alive and Travel round the universe in Fireball XL5….

Star Trek – I wonder who devised the Matchbox fliptops

Indradhanush – Quite ahead of its time

The Mathemagic Show – Never thought I would be a math convert

Kacchi Dhoop – Remember having a crush on Bhagyashree

      Katha Sagar – Peerless

For those from Mumbai, I remember seeing some pathbreaking Marathi Content, Such as

Dwidhaata – Don’t think Schizophrenia has been covered so brilliantly

Swetambara – Preceded Kille Ka Rahasya in the Scares Dept.

Ek Shunya Shunya – Reminded us that at a point in time Mumbai Police were compared to Scotland Yard.

Avhaan – Dowry Abuse. I still remember the edge of the seat ending.

There are lot more but memory fails me now.

Some one in one of the posts hit the nail on the head it’s ironical that that when media and technology has improved the content has suffered.

But I would also agree that we are so used to the pace of life today, would these serials seem a trifle slow?

    67. electrique on December 20th, 2007 8:31 pm

Hi guys hope you all are doing well.
I have now updated myself on the recent posts.
I suspect the toothy comedienne Indu is on about is Ratna Pathak Shah (Supriya Pathak’s elder sister).
Does anyone know what Natasha Shailendra is upto these days. She was the find of Dev Anand and found more success on telly that on big screen.
Apropos Palash Ke Phool if I remember correctly, I think it was directed by Asha Parekh.
I wonder if anyone remembers Lata Mangeshkar’s serial Phulwanti starring Archana Joglekar and Arun Govil in lead roles. Talented Marathi acrtress Savita Prabhune, playing Govil’s wife, made a successful debut in Hindi mainstream serials and never looked back.
I used to like Upanyaas but I remember it was suddenly taken off air without any reason or explanation – not unusual for DD’s monopoly in those times.

    68. Raul on December 27th, 2007 6:30 am

Shailesh Limbachiya has definitely struck the right chord with a lot of viewers of the DD era. We were credited with being monopolized and hence in retaliation were accredited to dictating intelligent viewing.

This is a very good thread and thanks a bunch to Sailesh. Though most of them are Hindi serials, I with my family in Chennai used to watch all the serials. Malgudi days is one of the best :)

I just wanted to say thank you because you have brought the good old memories in front of all of us. Everybody had mentioned some serials and the important message is not only about the serials but the love and affection within a family. I remember most of the serials that came after 86′. The memories of having dinner while watching doordarshan and chatting with my mom, dad, brother and sis is still refreshing. Though we are grown up and settled with our own families now, this thread has brought me the past images. Thank you once again!

hey shailesh,u really took me on a long forgotten childhood darshan. Most of u have covered almost all that there is to be remembered but there is little more.
public service animated stuff against street litter in which the protaganist sees everybody dumping their ghar ka kachra on the streets and in the end he goes berserk and screams and shouts and all the litter right back in!!!
The old fox on tuesdays or wednesday nights used to b quite a good detecive serial in german language dubbed in english, then there used to be Some mothers do ave them, fawlty towers-both from the BEEB and offcourse HOT TRACKS on fridays late night sponsored by VIMAL.that was the only avenue or chartbusting english music those days(1984-85). michael jacksons thriller, madonnas like virgin, lionel ritchies hello, huey lewis and the news, billy joel-uptown girl, cyndie laupergirls just wanna have fffun, tina turner-whats love got to do do with it,stevie wonder-i just called to say….All of these were 1st seen on good old DD.
It was the DD which ignited the pasion of msic in so many of us.
And i m sure many of you must have stayed awake through the night to watch the LIVE AID CONCERT organised by bob geldof . i think it went on continualy for 24 hours in london and philadelphia and phil collins flew a concorde from london to NY and sang at both the venues.and the electrifying performance of freddie mercury at the same concert.
hasnt salim ghouse down the VO for NDTV INDIA promos??also ronnie screwwala used to host a prog . i cant recollect the name. and in marathi genre u guys cannot overlook CHIMANRAO the lead was played by dileep prabhawalkar-the gandhi of lage raho munnabhai.and also bhakti barve
who sed to read marathi news on bombay doordarshan- aajcha thadak baatmya.
all these are etched deep into the memory.

    79. amitabh on January 27th, 2008 6:18 am

to add to the above , there used to be serial on terrorism in kashmir. It starred a guy who featured as KAKA in the film Maqbool. can anyone help me with the name of the serial and the actors? and in marathi serials does anyone remember inspector prabhakar and the lead actor??
In early 80s there used be a lot of craze for lucille ball also.

      hi guys,

this collection is really superb. reminding me at least one scene from very very old one.

      I salute you.

True and joyful memories of bachapan is possible quite easily with this collection. i really love that era of my life and of Door Darshan when we had no other source for entertainment. we have to wait for a week just for one episode of a serial. once miss means gone forever.

Sab yaad aata hai ki 9 baje ke serial ke liye tab bakwaas lagane waali NEWS suno usme bhi Sansad Bhavan ki news aayi to wait karo tabtak to neend aa jaati thi.

Sunday ke dopahar ki serial ka to koi bharosa hi nahi kab kaunsa program uski jagah lele.

Tipu Sultan ke to teen teen timing change huye the first one is of 11 pm tab to neend se jagane ko bolke rakhana padata tha.

arre bahot hai yaar likhane ko buss itanaa hi ki mazzaa aagaya ye collection haath lagane se.
and don wana enlist of my favourites bcoz its too long and may cover 80 % of all above Serials including comments. so just relax..

and plzz plzz”MISS THE GOLDEN ERA OF DOOR DARSHAN”

      thanks alot thanks alot thanks………….

      i just love it

Beautiful thread, my wife and I just went back to our childhood. Those days will never come back

      Few others we can remember
      a) Aa Bail Mujhe Maar – Amol Palekar accidentally finds himself in unwanted situation
      b) Fragile Rock – This was broadcasted in summer afternoons, story about a mouse sharing his experience with his community
c)Supriya Pathak and Ratna Pathak were together seen in “Idhar Udhar”. Ravi Vaswani and Liliput rocked together
d)Film Division ki Bhet – Social message about preserving food. Krishna asking for food from Draupadi – Few lines I can remember
“Mein Bhookha hoon, bhojan laao, jo kuch bhi hai, le aayo, …. yeh ek anna ka daana, sukh dega mujhko man maana’
“Jab tak daane daane ka insaan moh na karega,
koti koti jun junta ka kaisay pet bharega”
e)There was a short film to demonstrate spirit of sports – players from different sports running with a torch; awesome background music
f)Show Theme – Celebrity presented songs and dialogues (yes dialogues too) based on specific theme. It will be great to restart something similar.
g)Phool Khile hain Gulshan Gulshan – Tabassum interviewing bollywood celebrities

My favorite serial among these are Shriman Shrimati.
Keshav, Dilruba uncle, Prema amma, Koki amma, Chintu, Gokale… Characters are well framed. We are longing to see those episodes back in tv. Do there any VCD for these serials?????
      Please reply.

Really nice blog…took me down the memory lanes….does anyone remember a TV serial that had a similar story as swades(minus the lighting bulb!!)?
I think the lead actor was by Ashutosh Gowariker himself(when he had hair) and the actress was someone from south called Malavika. In the TV serial also the lead char brings in a huge RV….I’ve been dying to recollect the name of this serial..just can’t remember…anyone remember this??

    91. Ashutosh on February 15th, 2008 11:09 am

You guys have take me down the memory lane so badly..i m 1000’s of miles away from India and yet all those memories came flodding back– Wasnt the radha Seth and Tom Alter serial ‘Jaaniki Jaasoos’? i maybe mistaken there, also remember serials like CHUNAUTI a serial based on the young generation and their encounters with drugs. EK DO TEEN CHAR, PANKHO SE PANJO TAK- based on animals, i still remember one episode with a story of a camel in rajasthan. APPU AUR PAPPU,CIRCUS, KILE KA RAHASYA- a horror serial on a mysterios fort. TAMAS- a story of punjab, i think it was similar to SANJHA CHULLAH, but i was too young and could not stay awake till 10:00 pm to watch it. Also there were some short stories serial, where they had some real spooky stories, i dont remember the name of the serial but there was this story called ‘Studio’ where Dr Shriram Lagoo, returns as a ghost painter to finish the painting.
Friends this was one of the best peeks i have had in the past for a long time, i will keep thinking of more stuff and pen it when i have time, but thanks a ton for this post.

    92. Ashutosh on February 15th, 2008 11:11 am

Also the first MUKESH KHANNA serial TALAASH, i remember the title song, ” meri manzilein abhi door hai mujhe raarto ki talaash hai…”

    93. Ashutosh on February 15th, 2008 11:12 am

Does anyone remember the first ultra glamorous soap opera KHANDAAN it had a fleet of thespians in it!

    94. Ashutosh on February 15th, 2008 11:17 am

There was also this SHAFI INAMDAAR and SWAROOP SMAPAT with SATISH SHAH and FARIDA JALAAL serial called YEH JO HAI ZINDAGI, i think. There was also AAA BAIL MUJHE MAAR, Amol palekars impecabble comic timing and bharti achrekars presence….DADA DADI KI KAHANIYA….DADA MUNI played the Dadaji in that.

    95. Sagar on February 24th, 2008 9:25 pm

      BAS KARO !!!!!!
      Roolaoge kya !!!

    96. Sanjay on February 26th, 2008 8:36 pm

Has someone mentioned the excellent Amol Palekar directed serial Kacchi dhoop-I think the Lagaan director Ashutosh Gowarikar acted in the serial.
And the serial starring Farida Jalal, Firdaus Dadi and directed by Sai Paranjape was Saara Jahaan Hamaara.
If it has been mentioned in the above posts-apologies.
But I must say, I landed by accident to Shailesh’s post and became nostalgic and had memories of my beloved Dynora and then Weston television sets!- cannot believe how a mention of a television program refreshes memories of breakfast with parents and my brother, arguments over the serial watching versus studying for the entrance exam etc.
I am calling my mother to tell her about this-she will be so pleased to see that I remember those good old days!!!

    97. Shailesh Limbachiya. on February 26th, 2008 9:46 pm

      thanks for nice words.
also there was serial “Hum Panchchi ek daal ke” based on life of street children- used to show on every sunday morning at 10.30

    98. Subbu on February 28th, 2008 2:06 am

It is really a trip down memory lane reading the above posts. Worth mentioning here was Mashoor Mahal a quiz based show with lots of prizes hosted by Raman Kumar who went to direct Tara for Zee TV. Mungerilal ke haseen sapne was another serial loaded with humour. Today we have so many channels phir bhi we would love to be transported back to that era when entertainment was the king.

      @Samaruddhi,

Ajanbi was not originally a tele serial but a film that got converted in to first of its kind serial as there were no takers for the film in early 90s.. The title song (sung by Danny) was just of good..

Yes, I too remember all these goodies, and they had a great influence in maintaining the good culture all over india and thanks words is deserved by doordarshan for not misleading the generation towards being vulgur and too much nuclear as opposed to what now satelite are forcing to see and not react.

They really cherry-picked goodies for us, which were appropriate and knowlgeworthy, like spiderman, he-man, Guinness book of world records, DD’s comedy show, and ek chidiya anek chidiya, i will write more, but later.. thanks, this blog is long i dint read all yet.

    110. Tim on March 19th, 2008 12:51 am

And best of all was the Flop Show, the Jaspal bhatti’s comedy serial, as I am from chandigarh, his local, its my all time fav, as it more subjected to local and in fact to all native india, really twisted bowels while laughing :d. It was all so true, that when i got young and went out in the city’s venues and those all department, it all just showed all clear picture of flop show’s episodes before and came to know about the general things that were so easily shown and dramatized by him. (all those thekedar, chief guest, meetings, and halwayi come film line episodes) I love them all.

And now i think if doordarshan re-broadcasts the same old goodies again, it will keep its schedule busy for running 24 hours and will be more entertaining and worth watching, and would really gain and add more audience, i believe.

    111. Tim on March 19th, 2008 2:10 am

Yes Samruddhi i know, that track went like this, roo roo roo, laa lee lee laa laa, laa lee lee laa laa. That ajnabi, in which Arun bali use to sing, “bol mitti de baweya oye mera sona maahi aaja hoye”

    112. Tim on March 19th, 2008 2:35 am

      sorry DD2b-(

    119. Pradeep on March 20th, 2008 8:00 am

      Wow…nostalgia at its best here!
      my 2 cents:

Phir Wohi Talaash – Shekhar Suman was in the supporting role and so was Nilima Ajim. Ironically we never saw too much of the hero(Madam Jain) and the main female lead(name anybdy?)again.

@Tushar – that song was from the serial Charitraheen – went smthg like…
      Sheetal Majul komal tera aanchal
      Meri Sudhiyon mein lehraai…..
….aur ek sham maine tere naam kar di..

      Does Somebody remember a play…called
      “Dhai Akhar Prem ke”
smthg like 2 hrs single play..showed as a one time performance….was aired couple of times…may be on Lucknow Doordarshan..
I can remember the lead actor face and the story…was toooo good…

@Tim – do you remember the lyrics of the Title song of Mitti ke Rang….wasn’t this the one about a teenage boarding school?

Didn’t read all the posts – did somebody covered Show-Time? – which had famous scenes from hindi movies…presented by Tabassum probably.

The Jagjit singh title song of Neem ka Pedh was also quite good.

Also…reminded of the series of movies shown during election counting days…

there was once a Guru Dutt movies fest kind of thing…when I was in class 3rd..should be 1986…too young to appreciate a “Sahab Bibi Gulam”…but i was hell bent upon seeing it….and barely survived in the Maths Exam next morning :-)
Saw the movie again recently…and ofcourse loved it!!

    120. Tim on March 20th, 2008 8:37 am

yes pradeep, it went like this

duniya badal gayi, insaan badal gaye,
badley nahin kabhi ye mitti k rang, mitti k rang….

    121. Tim on March 20th, 2008 8:38 am

mitti k rang was not about boarding school or things like that,

but it was rather about short stories.. each story was different

      Hey…
Very few people remember ” stone boy”. It was a 10 part series. I just cant get it out of my head. One of the best shows I have seen on Indian television. Perfect childhood fantasy. I just want to know who directed it… would you have any idea?
He-Man and spiderman to Pokeman… seems like our generation next is missin out on some real television.
For stone boy… I cant think of a single children film of recent times that I can compare it to.
Do tell me more about it… if you know.

    124. Tim on March 25th, 2008 5:11 am

Can any one remember there was a serial or a documentary telecast in Door Darshan called SHODH …. enacted by NANA PATEKAR as Police officer..or Detective… ..PLS let me know more abt this …

    138. Pilania on April 16th, 2008 4:02 am

Some more that are not mentioned above…

Yaden – Forgot the hero (was the same guy in Paying Guest). – This old guy is writing memoirs of the time he met his wife and life with her.

Tumhare Liye – used to come in the afternoons – love story of a young girl and his tutor, set in Nainital.

Iktaaraa Bole – Kids’ serial – Same guy as in Mahabharat’s Indrajeet.

Shanti – Started some time after Swabhiman starring Mandira Bedi – quite a soap.

While growing up, I was really fascinated by the lead actresses of almost all of the serials! Now, I can’t find any of them around.

Cartoons such as He man…Fire ball (sunday 9 pm)…
      Vikram Vetal…
And during Summer Vacation the Fun Time (12.00pm)
There were good marathi serials like bhikhaji rao crorepathi
      paramveer,100, Hello inspector, gotya etc….

Now you can’t compare any serials with our past Doordarshan serials… This childhood generation will miss such serials…

I am crazy about a hindi play called ‘Kisi Ek Phool ka Naam Lo’. It was an incredible story. Two versions of it were made and shown on DD. One had Kavita Choudhary as heroine and the later one had Deepa Sahi. If anyone can tell me WHERE to obtain the copies of all DD plays I’ll be overjoyed.

      Hi Priya @142,

As far as I remember Kisi Ek Phool Ka Naam Lo had Pankaj Kapoor, Mohan Gokhale and Sushmita Mukherjee. It had something to do with a theatre group. Sushmita has committed suicide after a rape and Mohan Gokhlae and Pankaj Kappor are talking to the camera about their relationship. No?

    153. Pavan Jha on May 21st, 2008 2:35 am

To the best I recall “Kisi Ek Phool Ka Naam Lo” indeed came in two versions, once as a play presentation by a regional doordarshan kendra and another one as a tele film by Ketan Mehta which featured Pankaj, Deepa and Mohan Gokhale..

Aah those were the days… Some of the unfogettable Plays include “Dhai Akhar Prem Ke”, “Hamidabai ki Kothi”, “Bagiya Baanchharam ki” and a series of Moliere plays including Khalid Ki Khala and Kanjoos..another one titled “Roop mahal ki… ”
Even plays from Delhi and Jalandhar doordarshan were far more superior than any of today’s serial…

    154. PR on May 22nd, 2008 11:17 pm

WHY WON’T THESE BE RELEASED ON DVD’s? Its a pity. These series are not only nostalgic, but also remind us of great stories and a rich diverse heritage that needs to be preserved on only in archives but kept alive as a humble reminder of our transforming times.
Please Please if any of you know anybody who can get these released on DVD in good quality transfers, kindly do something about it.

      Hi there all,
it was great reading comments from all. I was searching for the title song for Discovery of India (that being my fav all time). i was pretty small then, but it just got registered in my mind. i am more influenced by this cable thing but still a few shows i remember from DD.
there was this “potli Baba ki” a sunday morning show on puppets and lot of sotries. i loved that more than Jungle book.
“Kile ka Rehsaya” used to scare me a lot. The 2 bloody hands on every wall of the fort really made an impact on every Indian mind. Laxman Sylvania Bulbs’ Ad was the copy right of this serial. It used to mark the start and end of the show.
There was “Tehkikaat” by Vijay Anand (brother of Dev Anand). that was cool.
I never used to miss “Surabhi” early Sunday Mornings. Sunday mornings could never get so informative with Renuka Shahane and Sidharth Kak anchoring the show. I used to reply each and every question. But sadly never won though. Also the “Spider Man” show with a glass of Rasna is still in my head. I still love the cartoon better than movie.
Sunday after noon best remembered by Regional Filma. There was this one film with Nutan I watched. It was directed by Sai Paranjapye. But i don’t remember the name. Nutan played a widow teacher.
I also do remember Nukkad, Sansaar (Dheeraj Kumar),Circus, Daadi ke Nuskhe, Fauji, Ye jo hai Zindagi, Dekh Bhai Dekh (Jaya Bhaduri), Chitrahaar and countless movies.
Not to forget “Vikram Betaal” and ” Karamchand” (with kitty and carrot). There was also this “Lucy Show”, but i don’t remember much of it now. Can’t forget Gokhale Sahab in “Mr. Yogi” and the great Raghuveer Yadav in “Mugerilal ke Sapne”.
The best mature serial that I remember is “Kshitij ke us Paar” based on re marraige issue of a widow. This was the show that introduced Sachin’s wife, Supriya. Vikram Gokhale played the Father in law.
“Udaan” was a real insipration show. I can’t forget the lady Kavita Chawdhary. But sadly she disappeared after that.
“Mahabharat” was all time favourite. The streets used to go all blank as if no mankind existed between 10 AM to 11 AM. That was a great show.
Thanks to all of you for reviving the DD memories.

      Hi Pavan @ 153,

Ok, so it would have been Deepa Sahi in Kisi Ek Phool Ka Naam Lo. All these years it was Sushmita Mukherjee who was stuck in my head, don’t know why. But nevertheless, it was an awesome play. This talking-to-the-camera technique was used incredibly well and added so much to the story per se. After all these years, it still remains one of the very best productions I’ve ever seen. Just amazing.

      Hi Tushar @ 176 / Vicky @ 178,

Are we talking about the Tumhaare Liye which was set in a hilly place (nainital or somewhere) where Lalit Parimu is a teacher who goes to tutor a young girl? In spite of the step-motherly time slot it was alloted on DD and the sparing production budget, it was very very good. It was and remains one of my absoloute favourites.

    180. Tejas on June 19th, 2008 11:58 am

There was one called ‘Dada dadi ki kahani’ and ‘Potli Baba Ki’.

I didn’t watch Poirot regularly but some picturesque scene from Poirot left such an impression on my mind, that I still enjoy living in Colonial United States from that single memory.

I wasn’t watching much fiction either, but mainly either comedy or children-oriented serials.

And finally…Ekta Kapoor teri ma ki !@$@…..(for not doing what was done with minimal resources but amazing literature in the times of DD)

Does anyone remember a serial that used to comelong back and had Renuka Shahane in the main lead? I think she was a college student in that serial, with a sister who was a painter (was it Pallavi Joshi?). She had a really good guy friend in the college (was it the actor Madhavan?). Then in one episode he gets kidnapped (?), and then Renuka somehow gets involved in it, she is threatened with the lives of her parents, she runs home, but they are already murdered. It was probably stopped after sometime, or the details are very hazy in my mind…she does eventually meet him later, but it turns out that he has joined some rebel group (?)…

I’d be grateful if someone could tell what this serial was, and who were the main characters. I’m not sure if it was on DD.

If only they had a channel with all of the serials on your list then it would be a superhit and would beat all TRP’s.

Sad….only ndtv imagine and dd bharathi show some of the old shows…

    201. Arthi V on July 21st, 2008 4:10 am

The Godfather series used to be shown on DD – on Thursday nights.
On Sundays there was this English serial about a family trapped and hiding from the…the Nazis? Anastasia was the name? I dont remember this but my dad used to make sure that we watched this serial…Anyone get this?
Yes…The serial on Nadia Comaneci…10 episode series that showed the ups and downs in her life and how she scored the perfect 10 at the Olympics. Can never forget this..Amamzing stuff on DD in those days…

    202. Shailesh Limbachiya on July 21st, 2008 4:12 am

then there was a superb series on Milkha singh (the flying sikh)- an athlete who won several awards in olympic.

    203. Arthi V on July 21st, 2008 4:22 am

Milkha Singh se yaad aaya – there was this ad – all the sportspersons carrying torches (akin to the olympic torches). What was this about…teh theme was good…damn..forgotten this…

      A mouthful of sky – India’s first English serial…

Milind Soman’s debut in the period serial – Noorjahan..

      Margerita with Soman again..

    205. Arthi V on July 21st, 2008 4:36 am

Also every Friday or Saturday night DD used to show a late night Eglish film – as though it was a weekly treat for the viewers.
Every week an award winning film – on Sunday afternoons..
News for the deaf and dumb – every Sunday before the afternoon film.
So many more..all trickling into my head now….

TOI used to carry a weekly review of the movie to be telecast. I used to so diligently lap up every word written and base my opinion thus…Such days…

    207. Tejas on July 21st, 2008 6:51 am

@Arthi V – Margarita was on Zee tv in their initial days, not on DD.

    208. Inca on July 22nd, 2008 12:52 am

      Arthi @ 201,
There was this absolutely gripping telefilm that DD showed in epiosdes about a Nazi camp – Escape From Sobibor. In spite of a looming school examination the next morning and my unworthy track record in academics, I just couldn’t choose my textbook over that. It was EXCEPTIONAL.

      @ 204,
A Mothful of Sky was a superb effort. The dialogues – written by Ashok Banker – were so stylish, cutting, terse. I still remeber a couple of them.

      Nasir @ 206,
You are right, the television this generation is getting is so low grade, so so pathetic. But since – unlike us who grew up with impressionable minds in the 80s – they have no frame of reference, they really don’t know what they are missing. It’s so sad.

And then, there was Kayar – a serial directed by M S Sathyu based on a novel by Thakazi Sivasankar Pillai. Of the cast I only remeber Anjan Srivastava. It had immense social relevance. The end is still etched in my mind.

Then there was this epic Chinese movie DD showed called The Outcast, about a young, unmarried girl who brings up an infant son of a soldier who goes to the front to fight a war in a remote village. Another one I remeber is Red Sorghum.

    209. Arthi V on July 22nd, 2008 1:16 am

The Japanese serial Oshin – about a very young girl who has an oppressive father, loving but helpless mother and a caring grand-mother. Oshin had young siblings to look after but was also made to work as a domestic help and also in the fields if I remember right.
I can get that feeling even now..the serial showed her hardships so well..very touching….I remember it kinda ended in her failed marriage but after that what happens to Oshin…Gone out of my mind..

When I think of it now, I am surprised that DD could atually show such good English and a few foreign language films / serials. Whats hap to it now.

I thought am the only person who usually gets nostalgic about Doordharshan, but by reading all other posts feel that we all share a common space.

Hey, do you guys remember a serial by name ‘Mitti Ke Rang’. I certainly have vague details of it. Each episode dealt with different stories. I also remember the title song of the serial, especially the phrase in the song “Bachpan ho ya teri jawani, Mitti to jaane teri kahani” In the 90’s when slowly cable channels started seeking their attention (and ofcourse became popular among viewers), I seriouly hated it, since good old programmes of DD were about to be missed. As far as I know till date the only programme retained by Doordarshan is “Rangoli” I always check Doordharshan, so that I may get glimpse of ‘Mile sur’ or ‘Ek Titili’ etc

    227. Priya on August 24th, 2008 11:03 am

      Hi Nitesh

Excellant collection of serials by you. I think you had forgot to add ‘Shrikant’ (the leading character role was played by Farooque Sheikh, adaptation from Sharad Chandra Chatterji’s Novel by the same name)and ‘Oshin’ (story of a teenage Japanese girl)Suraag (Sudesh Berry in a leading role as Detective this was in 1998 or so ….)

Once again nice collection from your side.

    228. Simmi on August 27th, 2008 1:21 pm

I remember the serial Satyajit Ray presents….with some stories strange and good. One I remeber the most is the one where shi ram lagoo gets to make a portrait of Amol palekar and he dies as he made portraits only of dead people something like that. THen there was another …Panchi..about some NRIs.
Tamas was very good but depressing….most of the serials are already named. I also remember good performance of Kapoor in Kab tak pukaroon..and also there was a seial, Ganddevta…with Draupadi from Mahabharat.

    229. mistipria on August 29th, 2008 4:04 pm

I would like to add the cartoon shows, Spiderman and He-man, The master of the Universe, and I often times also recollect the story of Swimee, the little fish, they would play that after or during breaks during movies I believe.. haha..

    233. Sudhir Raikar on September 10th, 2008 12:49 am

Great post Shailesh, and heartening to see the tremendous response. Those were the magical years for sure….and there was a certain innocence in all those serials which was unique…

I have some fond memories to share:

Every Sunday, I used to wait eagerly for 9 am when the serial fare began. Show time, Darpan, Mr ya Mrs, Idhar Udhar, Wah Janaab. At 11.30 or so, there was this educational program which was our scheduled break for bath, breakfast etc. Shameful but true!

Some voices that still ring (true) in my ears:

Katha Sagar: Duniya ke jaane mane kathakaron ki behatareen rachnaye jinhe samay ki dhool dhondlaa na saki

Mungeri lal: Mithoo babu, ab ekdum se sut up ho jayiye…hum to chale hi aa rage the, salowly and salowly

Bharat Ek Khoj: Easily one of benegal’s best works – sudhir kulkarni as Tilak was awesome, so were Naseer and Om as Shivaji and Akbar …and who can forget the naisdiya sukta hymn – srushti se pehle kuch nahi tha

Ek kahani – I fondly remember one story of a servant boy who is accused of stealing a shawl. Heart wrenching stuff

Tamas – what a gripping adaptation of the Bhism Sahani novel

Sirf Chaar Din – Late Dilip Kulkarni as the smart cop – great telefilm

Tuttu – a poignant story of a retarded boy played by Raghuvir Yadav

A telefilm that had the great Pankaj Kapur as the protagonist – a story of an old man who feels out of place, leaves home, only to come back (The support cast had Reema Lagoo and Ragubir)

Raag Darbari – Bhimsen Joshi’s title number “Darbari ke saat suron me…” amazing

      Satyajit Ray’s telefilm Sadgati

Subaah and Chunauti – they covered college life much better than the modern day attempts – arif Zakaria and Salim Ghouse were awesome

Anveshan – Javed Jaffrey and Neena Gupta (correct me if I am wrong)

Premchand ki amar kahaniyan – wonderful adaptation (not the Gulzar one)

Different strokes, Lucy show, DD’s comedy show, Famous Five movies

    234. Rashmi Rao on September 10th, 2008 12:48 pm

Good response, Sudhir! I second the eagerly awaiting for 9 a.m on Sunday’s.

I also remember the Ek Kahani serial that you mentioned, Katha Sagar had a similar heartbreaking story line were a family abuses an orphaned little boy who writes a letter to his grandpa to take him back to his village… still brings tears to my eyes..

      Hi every body,

See, I’m having two feelings currently after going through the site, I’m very happy to remember all those old days, and at the same time feeling very sad for missing them. My fevourite was seeing the cartoon and puppet shows along with comedy & fantacy serials. do any body remember…

      1. Hatimtai
      2. Superman
      3. Jhony Soco and flying robot
      4. Betal (Shabaaz Khan)
      5. Guchha
      6. and can some body tell me the name of the puppet show, shown in the evening at DD Metro, that had little puppets making constructions of sweet things. That had a family of fat father, mother and son. There was also a human and his puppet dog.
      7. Denies the Menace
      8. Gudget boy
      9. and that cartoon seris of a boy making wish by his base ball glaves.
      10. Transtell programs
      11. Molu

Yes, Rashmi those were the years – looking at Doordarshan now,one really feels sorry – the best they can do is to have re-runs of the magical archives but no, they will have their own door darshan in trying to compete with their mindless rival tribe into reality shows, saas bahu melodrama or the usual film-based trash.

      Hi everybody,

What do you know I’ve got the name “Fraggle Rock”. I was a huge fan of this show. And 6 inch tall caracter called Doozers, were really good who used to make constractions only to be eten by the Fraggles. and I also liked one of the character, who’s uncle sends him letters of his world tour and lots of stupid things he had done there on his trip. The human character and his dog reminded me of Denis and his Dog Ruff. Perhaps it was shown in 90’s in DD but it was released way back 1980’s in American Television. Jim Henson is the creator. That showed the adventures of the various inhabitants of an underground civilization. Rocking news is that a film is going to be released “Fraggle Rock: The Movie” in 2009. This was released in various languages.

I was also a fan of “Street Hawk” I really liked it’s title music and the back counting “5.4.3.2.1’ and blast off. “Night Rider” was great and I have seen it in “Star Plus” couple of years back. The Transtel Program Tele-Match, “He-man”, “Superman”, “Spiderman”, “Bat-Man” these are animated and I still love watching them. Do you remember “Super boy” Hindi dubbed English serial. Didi’s comedy show is another Transtell program, me and my brother used to lose our breath seeing and laughing at the comedy.

There was also a cartoon film on Loral and Harry.

“Jonnie Sakko and the Giant Robot or Flying Robot?”, “aha ha ha…” I still fill sad remembering the end of the story. I could not forget the end of the big survivor Robot for days then. Can any body send me link to watch it.

“Taro son of Dragon”. a Japanese animation back mid 80’s? I still remember the title song a bit.

Do anybody remember “Gayab Aya”, “Super Ted”, “Raccoons”.

And Walt Disney Cartoons are really overwhelming. Did you know before starting in 90’s it is used to come in 80’s also. Then perhaps it was not populer as much as it is now, then even I did not know the names of the character. But when it started once again as “Walt Disney Presents…” I really stunned as I remembered those were shown in past also. And still in the age of 27 I see this cartoons and remember those days.

I can’t stop myself from giving these names. I also watched “The Stone Boy”, it was telecasted twice or thrice in DD. “Raju aur Udan Tashtari” I’m mixing it up, did it have a Polio Effected boy who had a litle daimond tipe substance, that he takes in his palm and rubs it to make a wish or is it any other one?

Hey do anybody remember “Chamatkari Telephone” in DD National? It used to start like this, “Roz subhe ki tarha raju apne ghase nikla…”. The story was like that, the boy and his friend, a girl, one day found a old type telephone hand set without the receiver and the cord was disappeared after a bit. The boy used to desire a wish into the phone and a voice from the phone accepts that one or give him suggestion.

Keep blogging, and be in touch. Bye for now…

(2)the one related to the life of an IAS officer who got posted to some disturbed place and how he transforms the situation. Don’t remember the name of the serial and the name of the lead actor as well, but still remember his face, a fair guy with mustache. Never saw him again anywhere. The main attraction was his kinda soliloquies on the system, society, culture.

Thanks Shailesh for remembering that nostalgic period of DD.)

The name of that serial is “Manzilein” or “talaash”. It this title song “yu nikal pada hu safar main mujhe manzilonki talash hai.

did it have a Polio Effected boy who had a litle daimond tipe substance, that he takes in his palm and rubs it to make a wish or is it any other one?

The name of that serial is “Ashish” which had a boy who was polio affected. a baba gives him a diamond and warns him not to use on himself otherwise the diamond will disappear. the boy only uses for good for others. it was a nice serial but i could not see the end of this serial. if someone can shown some on it. i will be happy

    244. The Narcissist on September 25th, 2008 12:36 pm

Santosh…the serial about the IAS officer you mention had Prasad Gurav and NavniParihar in the lead. Unfortunately, even I don’t remember the name.

Another serial I missed in the post as well as the comments is Neenv. It used to be telecast on sunday mornings just before street hawk. It was a serial based on a boarding school and was the pioneer of all the boarding school serials.

DD Metro started off with some really good comedy serials in Zabaan Sambhalke (an adaptation of BBC’s Mind your Language) and also Dekh Bhai Dekh starring Naveen Nischol, Shekhar Suman, Farida Jalal and Bhavna Balsavar.

Then there was this serial about a postman who never deliveres the letters he is supposed to and dies. His son takes over from him after his death and delivers all the old letters…leading to comic and tragic situations. Don’t remember the name of that one either.

    245. santosh on September 30th, 2008 8:33 am

the name of the that serial in which father never delivers the letters is “Afsane”. I remember that very the son creates a lot of trouble by delivering them after ages.

    246. santosh on September 30th, 2008 8:40 am

Narcissist… the serial about IAS officer was “manzilein” or “talaash” for sure. that serial is still fresh in my mind it use show on air at 9.00pm at night but i dont remember the day. The title song is also fresh in my mind
“yu nikal pada hu safar main mujhe manzilon ki talaash” with a image a feet showing in the screen.

btw do you guys remember a serial called “manzil” used to be on air at 9.00 in 1991-92 with Anju Mahendru as the lead character. There was also Ananth Mahadevan who is business rival of Anju. the serial based on business class people. it was nice

    247. The Narcissist on September 30th, 2008 12:26 pm

One of the best serials with business rivalries as the backdrop was Khandan….featuring Dr.Shreeram Lagoo in the lead role.

By the way, it was wonderful to see that someone else too remembers Bibi Natiyon Wali. I was a kid when it was telecast, but i still remember the old woman in the title role.

There was another serial starring Dr.Ashwini Kumar…which was among the first to be telecast on national network. This was a precursor to Hum Log, Buniyaad etc. Forgot the name of that too.

    248. The Narcissist on September 30th, 2008 12:41 pm

And yeah…the Hasya Kavi Sammelans telecast on Holi. KP Saxena, Shail Chaturvedi, Kaka Hathrasi, Surendra Sharma and all. It used to be great fun.

    250. santosh on October 1st, 2008 8:38 am

it did not any words but music. but the music was good. it was produced by lok seva sanchar samithi.

    251. santosh on October 1st, 2008 8:46 am

the thing which i liked serial of 80’s was that there used to be no break in between. but the starting of the serial would take little while after completion of commercials but once the serial starts there used to be no break. which i still like the concept. Doordarshan changed this concept in 1993 similar to other channels especially which competition from star tv and zee tv.

      Hi,

This is an interesting page which took me to my childhood.
I think a couple of serials have not been mentioned here which I would like to list down…
      1. Vikram Aur Betal
      2. Dada Dadi ki Kahaniyaan

    255. Shekhar Shimpi on October 6th, 2008 12:19 pm

      “Indradhanush” was my favourite one;
      Sci Fi stuff, nicely made,..
you dont see that quality of stories, nowdays on Indian TV

    256. Vijay on October 7th, 2008 12:17 am

Does anyone remember a tele-film featuring Shekhar Suman, Smita Jayaker. The story was something like this ….. Smita Jayaker, who is married now, hears from her husband that one of their old friend is visiting them and this friend is Shekhar Suman (with whom she was in love). She dreams of how she will receive him, what all memories they share, etc., but to her disappointment, Shekhar, when arrives at her door-step, brings in completely a different picture.

Sad part is, now we do not even know if anyone has CD/DVD’s of such old DD serial’s or tele-films. Ofcourse, at times I do see DD retelecasting some of their old serials (for ex: Byomkesh Bakshi is being telecast now a days, at 11am).

    257. Rohit on October 13th, 2008 8:36 am

Well, Well, Well,……lots of serials. Now one thing which I think everybody missed is an animation filler that goes “Ek titli…aneak titliyan….Didi yeh aneak kya hota hai???” That filler still rings in my ears time and again…would love to have a copy of it to show to my children. It sure added some value into me….:-)

    258. J Manoj K on October 18th, 2008 1:26 pm

these are a few serils you guys missed:
      1. Bible ki kahaniya.. used to shown every sunday at 9 am.. it was the most well made and authentic dipiction of life during B.C. unfortunatly it was stopped because some christians found it objectionable.

      2. Sunday evevnigs, there wqs this wildlife based serial called “CUB”..atleat thats wat i think. its about a forest officer and his son and their adventures in the various forests of india. it was made by the the group which publishes “santuary” magazine.. i read somewhere recently that the son’s role was played by SALMAN KHAN…

      3. There was this serial abouta boy and his pet elephant, the boys father is forest officer who gets the orphaned elephant home.

      4. There was this serial about the cases faced by “CUSTOMS” officers.. dont remember the name.

      4. IN DD2, another serial also based on naval coast gaurd team led by OM PUri . It also had madhavan in it.

During the golden day DD we used to watch all the soaps irrspective of our ages or undrstanding capacity..but now when iam an adult of 28yrs…i dont find even one soap worth watching or good enough to grasp my interst.

    259. Ashish on October 26th, 2008 11:45 am

“Kya Banoge Munna” was my favorite oldie on Doordarshan. A classic low scale tv serial which can never go out of relevance as long as kids will be pushed to live up to the pressure mounted on them by super-ambitious parents and rule-by-books schools.

    281. Satyendra Jha on December 9th, 2008 6:33 am

hey, im sorry if some1 has already mentioned this, but i just remembered, there was an awareness program abt green vegetables, where a young bro-sis duo don’t like vegetables, and they are transported to the world of green veg, the king being baingan (brinjal). the song went something like….. shaniwaar ke din— munna aur guddi ne (yeah, i rem the mane of the kids as well…) —- gud ke saath-saath roti khayee—- and so on, giving names of days and how the kids havent had green veg any single day….

it isnt exactly a serial, but it had a great psychedelic impact on me, coz i was also exactly like those kids– no green leafy veg…

anyone of u guys, plz just acknowledge this program, and if any of u remember the lyrics as well, sone pe suhagaa…

@ Satyendra- yeah I remember the program.even my mom would try to psyche me & my brother while watching this.Whenever the brinjal king was being shown in his darbar- there would be a song which went-

I remember in one serial (english i think) a boy keeps on telling lies and his nose grows and grows and grows. Can you guys tell me which serial is this ?

This series had a bunch of some fairy tales as well.

      Thanks – Shiv

Thanks for this lovely post…oh i am so glad that somebody mentioned kacchi dhoop directed by Amol Palekar with Bhagyashree in it…I still remember the last episode of that serial…I had cried my eyes out that its over and my elder brother tried his best to cheer me up for the whole day..i had written a letter to DD (I was just 10 then) telling them to restart the serial…haa haa…my brother never posted it…I really miss old DD…thanx for refreshing d memories..thanks to youtube, we can still watch all the episodes of Malgudi Days

    326. jitaditya on February 27th, 2009 1:47 pm

      Hey nice work…
I think u missed the classic Neem Ke Ped…as well as Great Maratha…

ALso I think Chanakya never received the acclaim it deserved…it was a result of painstaking & meticulous results…perhaps the only proper historical work in Indian TV & Cinema which otherwise have a knack of raping history (remember Asoka?)

    327. reena on March 7th, 2009 6:20 am

      Hi Guys,
It seems ironic that the serials about whom we are getting nostalgic now, were so criticised when cable network was spreading it’s tentacles.

I loved all of them, they were true quality serials, at least most of them
My son is 7, I would prefer him watching those serials rather than what he is hooked on now!

Darpan and katha sagar along with neem ka ped were my favourites, that’s when i started reading literature

    328. Rk on March 7th, 2009 6:30 am

      @reena,
thats true. majority of Junta imitates sheep or ant behaviour and market can control the understanding and behaving capability and style of Junta. Zee TV came and Tara was started and very few were able to watch cable TV and that too in big cities only and newspapers were creating the atmoshere that people watching DD were uneducated, unpriviledged class as they were forced to watch boring DD and they were missing something revolutionary.
People more than anybodyelse are responsible behind death of good, quality oriented entertainment as businessmen were always corrupt and they will always be, its up to people how they keep control over market.

    329. vinayak on March 7th, 2009 10:31 am

[...] digressing from the topic of this post. Anyways it all came to my mind when I saw the post on Doordarshan classics in PFC a few months back ,I still see people digging it out of it’s grave and commenting on [...]

    334. Saurabh on March 21st, 2009 5:31 am

Being a new follower of passionforcinema, I read this article today, with each and every comments. Shailesh you have done a great service to an entire generation (let’s call ourselves Doordarshan’s Children)

As I was going through it, I made a list of a few programmes and their bits and pieces I recall, to post it here.

But then, had to strike off over 99% of them, because someone mentioned it somewhere along this giant trail(especialy after the list by Nitesh and Sudhir Thakur!) However, the few which didnt find a place are here:

      1. Does anyone remember this serial called Adalat with the lopsided smile guy called Dheeraj Kumar? Don’t remember much about it except that DK was a lawyer fighting cases. And that it used to be telecast on Wednesday nights at 10 pm. If you guys remember, the slot from 10pm onwards was reserved for adults with horrors and thrillers of the kind of Qile ka Rahasya and the likes.

      2. The wait for Sunday morning 9′o clock used to be tough! After Rangoli, they showed Gurubani (or was it called something else?), followed by a programme on gardening! Don’t know its name – Bageecha or something. We would watch this, waiting for the blockbuster 9 o clock shows – Ramayan, Mahabharat, Chandrakanta and the likes.

Loved the mentions made by some people – antenna theek karna, TV with shutter box!

      3. Sukh Dukh – This serial, telecast in the afternoon transmissions starred Govind Namdeo, and had amazing ensemble performances.

      4. Kaala Jal – This serial is probably my earliest memories of DD.

      5. Does anyone remember the programme where they read letters from audience? I remember this pretty thing called jyotsna as one of the hosts, don’t remember the guy:)

@ 241 – Neha Contractor: Hey, I thought u acted in Malgudi Days, u never mentioned Stoneman! Have met quite a few guys who are Stoneman fanatics! AM sure it can be sourced somehow, will keep you posted. But since you acted in it, you would be knowing the producer?

      Cheers guys!

    335. avn on March 22nd, 2009 1:47 am

      Awesome!!
Went through the entire post and comments…..purane din yaad aa gaye!
I found a few notable ones not mentioned:
      “Reporter” starring Shekhar Suman…..amazing work….
Nitish Bhardwaj directed a controversial version of Ramayan…..around 10 or so episodes were aired on sunday 9:00 AM slot…..does anyone remember?
Also, on Sunday 8:00 PM, there was a series where some people get together due to a vehicular strike or something, and some amazing stories about India post independence are shown…..was it “Swades”?

    336. aparna on March 24th, 2009 6:59 am

Nice post. I am remembering all those golden days. All of them were very nice serials, each with its own different concept. Now adays serials are so boring and have similar story line. I wish I can watch all these again.

Hi, Thanks to all of you all for discussing our common past. this article has touched me and had brought all of us together. Hats off to these programmes. Guys need one more help , is there any how i can buy DVD’s or VCD’s of these serials. I have spent my childhood watching these marvels and would love to spend my old age relishing these. could anyone tell me from where to get copies of Discover India Quiz-first color all india quiz shown on DD National in 1987?

    339. Leslie on March 27th, 2009 5:47 am

I still remember the title song of “Daane Anaar Ke”. Probably one of the best ever songs. Does anybody have that song. It was some excellent music by Vishal Bharadwaj and Gulzar.
Another lovely show was “Spirit of Unity Concerts”. Its theme music was my first exposure to AR Rahman. Amazing.
Another outstanding theme music was “Surabhi”.

      Jaane kahaan gaye woh din!!!!

      Hey all,
Feels really nostalgic after reading all these posts…
Just had 2 -3 serials of 90’s though in mind but still made some impact on our lives…
1)Anybody remember the TarramTu Serial ??
      Really loved the song…
Suraag was also 1 serial which i liked to see in the night…
Superhit muqabla started in competetion to Colgate Top10 was also good but when it showed episodes of golden era,it was really a moment to cherish….

Will again bring some more serials to cherish..
      Good Bye,
      Mandar :)

Hi does anyone know the serial in which there was a king and some female statues. In every serial one of the female statues comes to life and if I remember correctly tells a story something like that. It used to be aired on doordarshan long back.

    350. Bigv on April 24th, 2009 6:17 am

Janvi. The serial u referring to was Singhasan Battisi. This was supposed to have 32 episodes one for each statue but got discontinued somehow after eleven episodes only

      Cheers

      Hi Sudhir,
Thanks for the extensive list. I guess the serial name was “Jeevan Rekha” and not “Life line”.

Does anyone recall names of these serials?

      1) A story of Punjabi Sikh family featuring khalistan terror in backdrop.

2)An NRI/Urban guy in search of a guru for classical music in a village in South India. (I am sure it’s not the one featuring Hema Malini and Bharatnatyam). This was a story of a guy.

    352. Pollyana on May 5th, 2009 3:07 am

After reading your post I just realised serials of yester years had far better and more interesting content than those today. I loved “Kacchee Dhoop” and “Surabhi” was well executed too. But I personally feel “Buniyaad” was the BEST of the lot! Epic sweep, excellent story telling, some very good performances. It really gripped me!

    353. Agnostic Indian on May 5th, 2009 4:14 am

@MAYUR The serial you are referring is probably “Different Strokes”. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diff%27rent_Strokes)
Classic American Sitcom. But my vote would go to “Yes (Prime) Minister”. Hacker, Humphrey and Bernard will never fade away from my memory.

It is such a lovely to read about old forgotten doordarshan.Nowaday there are so many channels and so much going on television and movie world, but old is gold.I dont think 20 years from now,we will be discussing nowadays tele as much as we are thinking about doordarshan, cause it was simple and our lives were so simple.Doordharan is like our roots and really they have been so strong, thats why we all still cherish and remember what it gave to us.

    355. Arun on May 13th, 2009 5:07 am

One of my fav. was Stone Boy, I remember the lyrics of the song which goes this way:

Aa gaya hoo paas tere, chod ke sab yaar mere,
kar-le mugh-se dosthi, stone boy o-o-o stone boy.

It had a late nigt slot; 10.30 if I remember correctly.

    367. pavanjha on May 31st, 2009 7:48 am

      @inca(366),

Probably you mean Panchhi.. It was Mohan Mahirishi and family that comes to India..

    368. pavanjha on May 31st, 2009 8:00 am

@Amit P (359), Sunday Afternoon with Ranjit Malik and Dipankar (Genie) that was Ashcharya Deepak..

    369. Inca on June 1st, 2009 1:32 am

      Pavan @ 367,

Oh yes, Panchhi it was. Mohan Maharishi was indeed the dad and I think Banwari Taneja was one of the sons as well. I had been trying to rcollect this one for the longest time and now I know. Thanks a lot.

And then, wasn’t Panchhi also the name of the serial directed by Ravi Vaswani starring Winnie Paranjape? That was pretty good as well.

    370. Amit P on June 7th, 2009 5:23 am

      Pavan Jha @ 368
