Ek Nayee Pahelee(’84)::Love tale of young & old, No Lolita connection!

K Balachander made three hindi films with Kamal Hasan, Ek Duje ke liye (1981-82), Zara see Zindagi (1983) and Ek Nayee Pahelee (1984) and all the three films are wonderful films and they cover three different social stories. Though love is the common factor between Ek Duje ke liye and Ek Nayee Pahelee but these two films are very different from each other.
Ek Nayee Pahelee deals with lovers of different age but there is no Lolita connection here. When Nishabda is going to be released it would not be irrelevant to discuss about this old film, Ek Nayee Pahelee. Because Hindi films have dealt before also with the love equation between chracters of different age. On one side it deals with generation gap between father and son and mother and daughter but on the other hand same characters start loving characters of different age and here they don’t see any generation gap and thus film brings contrast before us and our weak and fake assumptions about a thing.

Kamal Hasan plays the rebellion and angry young son of wealthy and strong personaility, Raaj Kumar. Kamal protests everything old and his dis-likings are so strong that he turns against music and become a kind of misogynist also. His political association and radical ideology makes his situations more troublesome for his father, Raaj Kumar and after a strong and heated arguments with his father, Kamal leaves the house.
He faces an accident on the road and Hema Malini, a singer by profession and hobby, picks him up and carries to her home. Though Kamal detests both music and women but after spending some days with Hema Malini, he starts liking her and soon realizes that he has fallen in love with her, who is much older than him, and who could be rather his mother. Situations become like this and Hema Malini also feels attraction towards him. She is living a life of a lone woman, her husband had ditched her years ago.
But when Kamal and Hema plans to marry, story takes a twist and an ailing Suresh Oberoi, suffering from cancer, comes and tells Kamal that he is husband of Hema and they have a daughter also.
Story has more twists when we find that daughter of Suresh Oberoi and Hema Malini is Padmini Kolhapure and she is living with Raaj Kumar and she is in love with the old man. They both also have made a plan to marry.
Now see the puzzle in the story, Kamal Hasan loves the mother of Padmini Kolhapure, and Padmini loves the father of Kamal. And if these relations are accepted than what relations will these four characters get with each other? This is solved in this film, Ek Nayee Pahelee. Film’s plot and twists in the story demands enough mental energy, if one is wishing to solve the puzzle but Director carries ahead the film with such an interesting level that every scene maintains curiosity.

Casting of the actors was good and all the five actors play their characters, surrounded by a complex plot, very well and their performance match with the demand of the story. Kamal is fantastic and so is Raaj Kumar.
This was one of the film, which Hema Malini finished after her marriage with Dharmendra and she looked beautiful as per the demand of the role, so that a younger Kamal could feel attraction towards her. She delivers as per the demand of the role and Padmini was doing very good those days, with her performances in films like Prem Rog etc. She also does full justice with the role of a girl who loves an older man and is obsessive about him. Suresh Oberoi has small role and he does fine. Mehmood and Asha Sachdev also play their small roles well.
Music by LaxmiKant Pyarelal was not very good but lyrics by Anand Bakshi were as per demand of the story and were matching with the mood of the characters and twists in the story.
A nice hindi film by K Balachander.

The Tamil original (from 1975) had Rajinikanth making his debut, in Suresh Oberoi’s role.

Now see the puzzle in the story, Kamal Hasan loves the mother of Padmini Kolhapure, and Padmini loves the father of Kamal. And if these relations are accepted than what relations will these four characters get with each other? This is solved in this film, Ek Nayee Pahelee

If I remember right the tamil original was open ended, with that puzzling question coming in the climax and letting the viewer decide what happens next. Someone care to correct me, if I am wrong?

Aur bhee darshak hain zamane mein, hamare siwa:)
u did just wonderful by not revealing end for others who have yet to see the film.:d
But its a film to watch again, because end is just one thing, major atraction is the full journey. Long Live Kamal:)

anantha: thanks, never knew it was remake of Tamil film. Hey pls. refrain from exposing the end.;)

RK: No no.. Never done that ( i mean, exposing the end ;) ) and never will do!

As for it being a remake, his Hindi movies were all remakes. EDKL was Marocharitra (in Telugu), Zara see Zindagi was Varumayin Niram Sivappu (in Tamil).

I’ll have to listen to the songs of Zara See Zindagi! The Tamil version had a couple of nice poems by Bharathiyar set to music by Ilayaraja.

No offense. But this review was as bland as it can get especially the last para. Its like Oscar night thank you speech , trying to make sure you included everybody.Kamal did justice to the role..Hema maline did justice to the role..Padmini Kolhapure’s performance was consistent with her performance in other films she did during that time..???Suresh Oberoi does “fine”..others do “well”..

And “the lyrics was good..but music not so good..”????

There is no insight or understanding or analysis. You made a very goodpoint about the problems with generation gap between parents n kids..n how the same does not matter when they fall in love..I wish you had continued in the same vein..!

The greater part of the review is a gist of the story…which I could have read the back of the DVD!
I really appreciate not revealing the end of the story..but how about discussing the dynamics of their relationship?
There is a small hint when you state the need of HemaMalini’s character to be beautiful..but again the whole things drowns in
    meaningless platitudes..!

I know I sound like I am dictating what you should write. But I did not find anything substantial..towards the end of the review I was like “so..what is RK’s point…that its a “nice hindi film” by KB?

@ anantha - Varumayin Niram Sivappu music is by MSV. MSV said once that he adores SDBurman - quoting Sippi Irukkuthu (one pallavi emulates SD “yeh lal rang”)

    Scout:
You are right. But this kind of energy comes when I know that many have seen the film and all nitty gritties can be discussed. Then both dynamics and statics can be included. But at present motive was to give hints about the film that certain kind of films are made in Hindi before also. More one can enjoy by watching the film.
    Sorry to disappoint you.
But in new films, which I know many have seen, you can find details also.;)
