ENCOUNTER-THE KILLING

Encounter-The killing was released in 2002 and forgotten. And most of people still don’t know that there is a film like this.
By the name people may think that this is B or C grade film containing usual police- gangsters’ saga. It had no big stars but had powerful performances, good script and story, dialogues and above all well defined characters and direction.

The story is like this: Inspector Bharucha (Naseeruddin Shah) ek encounter me 3-4 jawaan logo ko icccha na hote huye bhi circumstances ki wajah se maar daalte hai. Mare huye logi me se ek ki dead body ko lene ke loye koi aata nahi. Uska koi identification nahi hota hai. As per court rules the dead body has to be disposed after some specified time limit. As a good officer bharucha aur unki friend jo ek journalist hai (Tara Deshpande) time limit ko badhane ki koshish karte hai. In the mean time ek aadmi called “Ponappa” ke phone call aate rehte hai aur us dead body ke baare me sachchi jhoothi hints deta rehta hai. Uski hint se bharucha ek family ko milne jaate hai jo ek well respected family hai. Jab bharucha dead body ke baare me bolta hai tab who bolte hai ki unka beta to USA me achhi job kar raha hai. Now Bharucha is confused? sach kya hai?
kya who family sachhi hai ya ponappa sachha hai? agar ponappa sachcha hai to who family apne bete ko pehchanne se inkaar kyu kar rahi hai?

Naseeruddin Shah gave powerhouse performance as inspector Bharucha. His Parsi excent was excellent. The scene where a judge scolds him and at that time his body language, dialogue delivery facial expressions of shame - in one word mind blowing! Dilip Prabhavalkar with long teeth (perhaps Gandhiji of Lage Raho munnabhai) as Ponappa was inside the skin of the character. Tara Deshpandey, Ratna Pathak shah, Akash Khurana, Sanjay Dabholkar and Dipak Shirkey was gave good support to the story.

The film is different from typical bollywood films. It has only one song. Unusual story. It is not at all about encounters but human emotions like honesty, grief, anger etc in a well balanced manner. Also it keeps audience stitched on the sheet about suspense of identification of dead body and court procedures about dead body.

It was a good attempt by director Ajay Phansekar and Shringar films.

If you are true movie lover than go get DVD of Encounter-the killing. May be it is not a classic but movie - worth to watch.

excellent post on a very good film Shailesh. Despite the shoddy production values and bad acting from others, this film is totally worth a watch. They didnt even market it properly. I loved it… Naseer is awesome !!!

By the way - the actor who plays Punnapa is dilip prabhawalkar, the same guy who plays Bapu in Lage raho munna bhai.
