Essential Eighties: Tezaab (1988)
Sujoy Singha | Retro | January 6, 2010 at 1:00 am
PrintMohini..!! Mohini..!! For The Win!!
In true HIMYM fashion, I’ll start this story with – So kids, this is more of an emotional ride than anything else. Because I am a child of the Eighties. Yes, the eighties. When Windows meant ‘Khidki’ and the mouse was only a rodent. And the movie Tezaab and me got acquainted through a Durga Puja pandal who used to play ‘Ek Do Teen’ in an infinite loop. I nagged my Didi to get me the audio cassette. Yes, we didn’t have iTunes or MP3 in those days. It was the summer of 1989, and I had the T-series combo cassette of Tezaab on Side-B and a movie starring Cheeranjivi and Sridevi on Side-A. I was in Standard I, and I have no shame in admitting that I learnt my Hindi counting from ‘Ek Do Teen’, like the millions of young Indians of my generation. But unfortunately, since my mum was very protective of me, she believed that the violence of N Chandra’s Tezaab wasn’t suitable for my young eyes. And I couldn’t even get a sneak of the movie when my neighbour rented the VHS.
And barring a peek of ‘Ek Do Teen’ here and there on Wednesday Chitrahaar, or listening to ‘So Gaya Ye Jaha’ on Radio Mirchi’s late night playlist, I had seen almost nothing of Tezaab. It took me almost 20 odd years or so to catch this movie on the Telly when Star Gold were kind enough to air it. [By the number of brand names flashing in this post, you guys must be guessing that this one seems like a paid review
, which it certainly is not]. So what is Tezaab? I have no shame at all in declaring Tezaab to be one of the milestone movies of eighties Bollywood. It has Anil Kapoor as Munna, who in a way is a re-incarnation of Vijay Verma [Deewar] and Insp. Vijay Khanna[Zanjeer]. It has Johnny Lever looking ugly as never before or after, Chunky Pandey in a career best supporting role called Baban, Annu Kapoor being as musical as he is on telly, and Kiran Kumar in a screen scorching evil dude character called Lotiya Pathan. But above all, Tezaab launched the Madhuri juggernaut which stormed the nation for decades. And quite aptly, she’s named Mohini [ mythological influences you see. We certainly cannot escape from these].
Watching this movie in the last year of the Noughties brings back nostalgic images of the Eighties. A world without cellphones, and still gangsters and street ‘gundas’ operated. A world with Mandakini in a black swimming suit exposing her thunder thighs and cinephiles still considering her awesomely seductive. A world where Madhuri, even with her visible pimples, would not refuse a close-up shot. And a world where song locations meant Khandala hills with artificial smoke, Anil Kapoor in eastmancolor sweaters and Anuradha Paudwal and Amit Kumar in playback. Sigh! The good ol’ days.
The narration is crisp and the story jumps through flashbacks to tell the tale of how Munna and Mohini met and fell in love. Eighties colleges must have been filled with a lot of drop-outs rejoining college. LOL. And Munna who is a Psychology expert wants to join the Indian Defense Force. [Was it the Navy to be precise? Can't remember]. And yes, women in those days did get impressed by a male student’s marks in Psychology. Munna supports himself and his younger sis Jyoti by working as a part-time swimming instructor [and hence, the scene with the Thunder Thighs]. All was well with Munna and Mohini, and they even promise to not see each other until the exams get over, studious students that they are. But Lotiya Pathan and Mohini’s drunkard father -Shyamlal [Anupam Kher] conspire to make Munna’s fate turn upside down. Munna is convicted of murder, and then another petty theft charge. This movie has extreme usage of words like Balaatkaar and all. But then, peeps of this generation will link Balaatkaar to Chatur’s speech rather than Ranjeet’s deeds. ANYWAY! Eventually, Munna comes back with a vengeance plan – Save Mohini, Save The Movie and he does it, in style.
But if you mistake Tezaab to be just a popcorn entertainer, you couldn’t get any more wrong. Tezaab speaks of bigger problems than it meets the eye. Munna’s life is turned into a hell due to a failed judiciary system. His life gets transformed overnight as he changes from a patriotic youth to an ostracized anti-social element. We are in a new decade, two decades away from what the movie’s era, and India is still dealing with similar issues – of corruption and public security or the lack of. Munna represents the angry young man of the eighties screaming for justice.
Last but not the least, any post on Tezaab is incomplete without mentioning ‘Ek Do Teen’. I can only rephrase Dr.Dang’s [Anupam Kher in a different Subhash Ghai universe] World-Famous in India quote -
Aaj Tak Us Gaane Ki Aawaz,
Mere Kaano mein Gunj Rahi Hai.
[Translation: Even today, I have that song resonating in my ears]
This could be a serious phase of tinnitus. But again, we cannot deny the fact that Madhuri truly succeeded the Diva Icon status previously held by the likes of Helen and then Parveen Babi. Mrs.Nene exploded the screen on the footsteps shown by Masterjee Saroj Khan. The crowd extras shout out -Mohini Mohini. Little Sujoy watching Chitrahaar shouts out -Madhuri Madhuri. Tezaab was definitely one of THE movies which showcased what screen-chemistry actually means. Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit’s jodi successfully went on to give us many more eighties entertainers and the saga began with this.
Concentrated H2SO4 ~ aka Tezaab ne poora Bachpan Hilaa Daalaa!!!

haha… sooper post!!
I remember going with 5 of my cousins to a night show in night dress lol. I too was in 1st std, or maybe lower or upper kg. I remember nothin else. How was the movie, how were the songs… nothing. Just remember the visit to the theatre.
loading...
Haha. I think you can buy a Moserbaer Tezaab DVD for just 35 Rs. Doesn’t get cheaper than that! You don’t get Masala Dosa for 35 Rs man. Hehehe. Just trying to motivate you to watch it
loading...
Aaah! U bring back memories. Nicely written. Of course the whole movie got a huge boost because of “Ek do teen”. And to think the opening lines of the song werent even Javed Akhtar’s lines. They were given to him by Pyarelal, when he explained the tune to him. Those days the theatres were empty due to an array of bad films. Therefore an average or a good film (relatively speaking) had a way of impacting. The songs became anthems, dialogues – the way we responded to parents and teachers, styles which we wore stupidly to schools!
loading...
Nice trivia VJ. Pyarelal has given us a lot of other gems. I don’t remember much about going to the theatres during those days. Movies meant renting VHS and watching at my neighbour’s Made In China VCR. The song was absolutely an anthem for our generation
loading...
As kids we used to come together to chip in a rupee each so that we would be able to afford that video cassette rental. Then we would convince the resident, who owned the video player, to play the film. She would get to see the film for free and we would be crouched in the room all together, watching the movie for a rupee.

I think after the success of the song ek, do… filmfare awards for the best choreography were introduced.
loading...
Absolutely correct. The first Filmfare award for best choreography was awarded to Saroj Khan for Ek Do Teen -Tezaab in 1989.
I love the amount of trivia that people out here are pouring down. Cheers to the eighties

Very Nostalgic post. Could’ve been a bit more detailed about Chunky Pandey histronics, some good comic scenes, key plot points, impactful dialogues and impressive action. Overall a complete masala entertainer, immensely buoyed by the super-success of the Ek Do Teen number.
I believe, it can very well be declared as the song of the decade – the 80s. Yeah, the Anil-madhuri duo followed it up with tons of successes like Parinda, Zindagi ek Jua, Beta and Ram Lakhan. More like Jeetendra-Sridevi, Govinda-Neelam or Aamir-Juhi, this jodi clearly defines and personifies the essence of those times – the late 80s to the early 90s period.
loading...
Chunky’s histrionics and the whole Anil-Mandakini-Madhuri and Annu Kapoor plot will be dealt with in a future post in a very crass way
And I think PFC wudnt allow it, so will be posting it on my blog.
Anil-Madhuri’s jodi also gave us Jeevan Ek Sangharsh and Jamai Raja.. both so awesome in their own way. Hehehe
loading...
arre yaar sujoy …. after an amazing foreplay, and the beginning of the act, cut kar diya yaar… you had just taken me to a different level of excitement comparing 80s youth and Anil Kapoor’s depiction, when you signed off the post… keep posting, specially agar ho sake toh a part 2 of this… looking forward to it…
loading...
ROFL at the foreplay
I will deal with Munna and the 80s Indian youth angst in a separate post for sure..donno if u cn call it a sequel or not..
Lekin,I will certainly be doing a kind of a crass version of Tezaab.. do visit my blog in the next couple of days to see more.. hope u like it..

Tinnitus reference was funny

Sadly I suffer from tinnitus myself
But it wasn’t caused by Dilip Kumar Jee in a police wala uniform

I was in 10th or 11th and there was this buzz around about the Ek do teen song….and a new girl called Madhuri…I was a huge Sridevi fan and in the beginning I faulted Madhuri for being thinner..having a non-round face..huge smile…in a way only Sridevi fan understands…
A couple of movies the diva had me dancing to her moves too..
She was the best thing that happened in the 80s. Her jodi with Anil was grt and I was a big Anil bhakt too.
although I do remember her movie swith Amir – Dil and Deewaana mujhsa Nahin ..There was 100days as well.
I sure am glad she got to do a Devdas and Aaja Nachle
Her acting talent has not been fully tapped yet..I hope she can get some more chances.
loading...
I love ur username – Bavre Nain
Madhuri ruled the screen for most part of my growing years..
As for Anil.. he is one of the most underrated actors of Bollywood.. and sadly he’s now associated only with the hyper-histrionics of shouting “Chai-Wallah”.
Although I have a different opinion about Devdas, Aaja Nachle was again another movie made for Madhuri bhakts like me and you
loading...
I don’t agree to your statement that Anil Kapoor is “one of the most underrated actors of Bollywood”… somehow I’ve observed quite a few post Gen X bloggers throw words like “underrated” “cult” and such without understanding the meaning of those terms thereby grossly misrepresenting history itself for the readers who would be reading your cached content 10/20 years from now.
If Kapoor was under-recognized in Bollywood, how is it there is a list of awards he won for his acting…

with under rated I guess he meant, not as much lapped up like the Khans and Roshans nor immediately counted in the list of greatest actors like Kamal Hassan and Mohan Lal… though I dont see him falling in either list anyways… though with the vocabulary meaning that you provided and the list of awards mentioned, wordly wise, he seems like over rated now …. Beta? Pukar? Welcome?!!! for that matter even Taal happened at a time when there was this huge slump in cinema in 1999, followingly we seem to have this phase every 3-4 years….
loading...
I guess u hv to take it how u mean overrated or underrated.. its relative rather than being just straightforward dictionary ..
I agree with PS.. Anil Kapoor has never enjoyed the SuperStar image status that the Khans or Roshan has enjoyed.. thts wht i meant..
aap naaraz naa ho..
loading...
Well, see that’s my problem then. Cause I see you taking a square plug trying to fit it in a round hole. Underrated has never been related to lack of super-star status. This is the first time I’m seeing someone making the connection equating underrated to lack of super-star status. But if you look at your original statement that I picked on you say “underrated ACTOR” – which is where I’ve disagreed with you.
Now if we go by your definition/interpretation that underrated equates to lack of superstar status, then Dharmendra too is an Underrated actor, cause He was almost there when Rajesh Khanna stole it from right under his nose and then it Amitabh who got the Super Star status… infact Rajesh Khanna is recognized as the first Super Star of India, before him there were stars, but the concept of Super Star began with Rajesh Khanna, so that would mean Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor are all underrated actors…
I’m not angry… just messing with you for your misuse of “underrated”
loading...
hai raam.. i tk everything back.. i am not chetan bhagat,, and i cannot keep arguing..neither i am vvc
no one is overrated or underrated except for harman baweja and himmesh reshammiya.. maybe rakhi sawant..
ab maaf karo maalik
loading...
acha who is overrated and who is underrated… Himesh is under rated and Harman over rated, due to the order of words? and is rakhi sawant over rated and under rated?
loading...
are nahin…Anil enjoyed stardom to the hilt…acted with most of the screen godesseses of the day…bus jyon tyon Shahrukh, sunny , Akshay kumar ka palda oopar utha he started taking back seat….phir Sri devi was getting older too.
I remember waiting for “Roop ki raani choron ka raja” to release durign college yrs …
chameli ki shaadi, Eeshwar, Viraasat pretty much proved hios acting powress beyond doubt…
He was the saving grace of Yuvraaj recently…somebody needs to showcase his talents and extend his shelf life like Big B…
loading...
The words “cult” and “underrated” are indeed abused by the authors and commenters here. To the point that one is skeptical about the accuracy of the statement every time those words are used.
The other day someone here called Lage Raho Munnabhai a “cult classic”, while in reality it never even came close to being those. It was just a light hearted entertainer that got noticed because it talked about Gandhiji.
And they call something underrated when they see that others don’t like the thing that they like.
They just use those words for impact.

Another Mrs. Nene bhakt here yaaron. Ever since I have gained senses I’ve known only her. Have got most of her movies in my collection. Gonna watch this one again today.

If I make it to Denver Im gonna stakeout in front of her house for darshan for sure…
Live life Madhuri size I say !!!

She needs to do some more movies. I did get to know that Madhuri is to portray Indira Gandhi.. so friggin anxious abt tht

the scene when anil in white navy clothes saves the child in prom stepping down from ladder amidst the gunfire is….absolute copy of the scene from The Untouchables! an 80’s classic. costner and conery.
great post nonethelss…part II awaited

your name reminded me of the famous Ham scene of Tezaab
“SIR GIVE ME THE ORDERS SIR” Kapoor to Oberoi… “SIR GIVE ME THE ORDERS SIR”… I remember something shouting at the screen in the theater on this scene “Abay ghochu jaane ka hain toh jaa… order order kya karta hain”
loading...
it is trying to remind of something lekin dhang se yaad nahi aa rahaa, what is going in this scene oz, apart from violence of course where AK is asking for SO to give him orders to fk some ppl, but is this while he is in the navy whites or after he is a crook?
loading...
It’s when he runs to Mummy Papa at the bank in his spotless crisp navy uniform carrying the cup “Mummy Papa main first aya”…
You guys make me look so old!!! Many things attached to Tezaab:
1. It was N. Chandra’s biggest hit, I guess even till today. He’d started off with Ankush, his best that I loved (Amitabh Bachchan did not understand the success of Ankush and had quoted “Just because Ankush is a violent film it is being hailed by the press”… I of the few times I disagreed with him)… followed by a bigger hit Pratighaat..
2. The huge crowd scene next to the stage watch Madhuri perform Ek do teen was the first of its kind in Hindi cinema – a rock concert kind of a setting. It was reported in one of the gossip magazines (that I used to devour during my teen years) that Madhuri was very nervous to wear that dress and dance in front of the crowd that had to act wild aggressive and pump their fists in the air.
3. Choreographer Saroj Khan was at her peak. She just moved a thousand notches up than what she did with Sridevi in Nagina (Main teri dushman, dushman tu mera, Main nagin tu saperaaaaaaa… aaa. aaaa)
4. Chunky Pandey finally moved into second rung hero roles… a few years later he would do a leading role opposite Madhuri, in a film that crashed before it hit the theaters and I remember me and my senior in college had driven to Vishal theater in Pimpri Pune to watch it and arrived an hour earlier thinking it was going to be a houseful… we and 6 other people were the only ones occupying the balcony.
5. Respect. Kiran Kumar got that respect and boost to his career after this. Though he had disappeared and returned years later in Rakesh Roshan’s first directorial venture Khudgarz (yahin kahin jeeyara hamaaar, dekhoriya goom hoyee gawaa re!!!), in a negative role, and did negative characters thereon, it was Tezaab… those eyes hunting for Madhuri in the opening song sequence (ek do teen) just laid out the path of how he was going to hammer in through the rest of the movie.
6. Anil Kapoor and his brother started this PR campaign of Anil being the Numero Uno in Bollywood… Amitabh was irked… their PR campaign gained further momentum with Mr. India. Somehow it (PR campaign) just fizzled out. Not sure why.
7. Johnny Lever’s first bigger and recognized roles. Though he had a big slice in Pankaj Parasher’s Jalwa three years ago, it was Tezaab which now got him in the limelight.
8. Though Ek Do Teen was the poster song child of the movie, there was another sleeper hit quite close to Ek Do Teen – So gaya yeh jahan, so gaya aasman, so gayee hain saree manzilein, so gaya hain rasta… – and more so because how it was picturized on screen.
9. Javed Akhtar officially and permanently became a lyric writer. Ek do teen was written by him
loading...
wow oz… tezaab ka benaqaab … mazaa aa gayaa… and now I remember the scene yes… papa mai first aa gayaa scene
… yes yes yes… that also reminded me of his dad, he is that guy who still walks around in a few movies and serials here and there…. and yup, as I also mentioned in my comment, the crisp whited anil kapoor and the starch cleand Suresh Oberoi… wow….
Just to add in to your pointers…
1. I think this is probably the only movie which keeps N Chandra in the minds of the masses, so actually his biggest hit in most possible ways.
2. Would ve loved to be that crowd.. DAMN!!! as the post also suggests Madhuri looked real cute as well with those pimples on her face :lol
3 Oh yeah, I heard she had a very tough time after this song to juggle and keep both Sridevi and Madhuri pacified.
4 Its amazing that somebody remembers that chunky pandey, I had mentioned that in comment… KHILAF…there was this sickeningness that movie carried on itself… together with Doodh ka Karz and a few other flicks, this movie nauseated the hell out of me when played in chitrahaar, with electric shocks being given to CP to revive his heart beats… woooo
5 Kiran Kumar uske baad lekin aur kis mei aaya ? apart from a few television serials wayyy later…
6 Few of the reasons I had read and fathomed why Anil Kapoor campaign failed was that suddenly there was the new age Romance flicks of QSQT which suddenly distracted away a lot of audience, and in the meantime they were still preparing for a then Larger than Life Roop Ki Raani C K R, which they believed will do the trcik, ended up reversing the whole thing with AK now having to do miserable bad flicks for money, numero uno was a lost cause by then…
8 Nostalgia… so gayaa, and there was this song… keh do ki tum ho meri varna… that was one chitrahaar fav….
7&9, I think the movie and the ek do teen made the careers/re careers/cementing careers for a lot of people… Madhuri, Saroj, Javed Akhtar, Chunky Pandey, Alka Yagnik, Kiran Kumar…. you name it, for a lot of people this movies was one of those high points..
loading...
That mountain scene and the super duper strong wind blowing over the hero and heroine in song sequence was seen in almost every movie after Tezaab’s Kehdo ki tum ho meri balma, jeena nahin mujhe hain marna, dekho kabhi na aisa kehna, dekho kabhi na aisa karna… yeah Tezaab impacted hugely many careers of many. Madhuri become the Numero Uno, no one could touch Saroj Khan, Javed saab went on to become the leading film writer, Alka Yagnik, Kiran Kumar, Johnny Lever… so many
loading...
n I guess it was that mountain scene which was made a parody out of in “woh ladki hain kahaan” in DCH…
loading...
Ye ladki hai kahaa parodied Chandni IMO more than Tezaab.. but cud b either .. The smoke, the saari and the sweater all point towards Chintuji and Chandni Sridevi coochy-cooing
loading...
I dont think wo ladki hai kahan parodied keh do ki tum ho meri warna (not balma
) or chandani rather a the whole scenes of such kinds which were prevalent in the 90s. Also Sonali Kulkarni wearing blue saree with open hairs blowing instantly reminded me of Madhuri rather than Sridevi.
loading...
@Jahanpanah and Sujoy … exactly, it was the laugh on 80s/90s, though as oz puts it, this song probably made it the most popular…. but then again as Sujoy says, the sweater was typically Rishi Kapoor and as Jahanpanah says the hairdo was typically madhuri    …. I used to love farah khan till she used to do such harmless gags … it was when she along with SRK and KJo minted tons of money with her “gag movies” where if you be critical they come back saying “we told you so” and still keep shouting “4th biggest hit ever” kinds…. anyways back to DCH and the song…
loading...
@oz, Irony, everybody but N Chandra’s!
loading...
The only thing I remember about Khilaf is its song…smthing like…aaja sanam mari jaan chali..teri kasam meri jaan chali..
loading...
Another number was something like “Tum bansi bajaate ho”.
loading...
So gaya yeh jahan was a BIG favourite, whistled away merrily during several of my night outs!! this song never gets old!
fantastic recollection oz
loading...
And it plays everynight at 12:45pm IST in RadioMirchi..

Hahaha.. confession of devouring Hindi filmi mag.. breaking news on pfc
Saroj Khan’s resume definitely features Ek Do Teen, other ones being – Humko..aaj kal hai (Sailaab), Dhak Dhak (Beta)..phew its going to be a long list… let’s not go there…
Whoa! Didnt know u r from Pune.. I lived in Pune for a period of 3 years.. But Pimpri was a bit too far.. I used to hang around MG and East Street.. the only single screen tht i hv been in pune is west end..
and chunky pandey is also known for “tutak tutak tutiya” from ghar ka chiraag – apart from his bangladesh cinematic hero roles..
lotiya pathan features on my top 20 list of bollywood villains.. chk it out here -http://bit.ly/898WZ
and kudos to u sir.. u r a powerhouse of trivia..
very sad to know abt the pr campaign tht didnt work.. anil kapoor certainly deserves a superstar status..
i love so gaya ye jahaa.. i think it will be the only hit tht nitin mukesh can boast of… other than maybe .. jaisi karni… waisi bharni
loading...
Another Nitin Mukesh gem-
this one is from
‘Krishna Krishna,haaye Krishna,
jagmag hua re angna
chand suraj nihare, jhuke charnon mein saare
aaj jhoom jhoom gaaye jamuna”
Kishen Kanhaiya- does anyone else here remember this song?
loading...
wow sethu saab, and that reminds of another Nitin Mukesh lullaby .. “radha bina hai kisan akela chod nahi dena radha chod nahi dena”…. radha ka sangam anyone?
loading...
@PS: Radha bina hai Kishen akela is from the movie Kishen Kanhaiya itself.
loading...
@ PS- as Ajay says Radha bina hai Kishan akela is from Kishen Kanhaiya itself but its sung by Manhar Udhas ( and Sadhna Sargam ) and not Nitin Mukesh
loading...
@ajay/sethu … my bad… nitin mukesh and radhas confused me up … that was “o radha tere bina… tera shaaaaam hai aadha” … shyam and radha were in fashion for some time in bollywood ….
loading...
bhaijaan..bura na maaney to can i pls add some more trivia(l) ishtuff?
1) chunkey pandey had gone around town touting how his role wasa chopped off.. apparently there was a romantic angle between him and Munna aka anil kapoor’s sister including a song that take place after he saves her at night..
2) the film u refer to – chunkey pandey and madhuri as leading acotors was a famous turkey called khilaaf.
3) Tezaab had also resurrected Anu Kapoor’s career… in a twist of irony.. kapoor went on to become famous as a singer/compere on TV (he actually became a HUGE TV singing Star and ended up womanising, beating his wife and then the divorce etc etc)
4) boney and anil had gone into an overdrive to tout AK has the next big thing…they had a running war going on that went on till HUM released and then it went ballistic – allegations, counterallegations about collections. hits and flops etc..
5) Kiran kumar (the late great Jeevan’s son) actually had a rollicking affair with rekha at one time… he came in some lesser known films in the 70s such as Jungle mein Mangal and then was out of the scene. Khudgarz and Tezaab gave him a fresh lease of life..that is still going on…
80’s..kya din they yaar…
loading...
Before Tezaab, Johnny Lever had a good role in Govinda starrer Hatya(still remember him as the blacksmith)
@Sujoy: He really looked his ugliest in this one
loading...
It was more inspired from Streets of Fire (1984) starring Micheal Pare and Diane lane. I watched Tezaab when it was shown on DD for the first time in 1993. It created quite a rage then also.
loading...
shaant, gadadhari bheem shant… doesn’t matter kaha se inspired hua tha, unless it involved pritam..
i remember the first time it aired on DD.. it was brought by Dheeraj Kumar’s Creative Eye pvt Ltd, and it had a contest to name all the brands shown during the ad breaks.. phew!! all of tht to get a videocon tv as the first prize.. hahaha…
loading...
hai raam.. everyone’s asking for a part ii, now do i seriously consider writing a follow up with focus on munna and the assee ke dashak ka naujawan.. hmm
i’ll give it a shot and also i’ll do a totally crass post on tezaab.. pls do chk my blog in the next couple of days for tht
loading...
aah…Tezaab…how can I forget…this was the first movie I watched without telling at home…was in 9th standard then.
loading...
hehe.. we all have our set of movies tht we watched without telling at home… the first one for me was bandit queen
loading...
I saw Tezaab as a kid, i think the first time I remember my pa getting a VCR rented and getting a cassette… , and had a similar cassette “Side A” tezaab and “Side B” QSQT …
what days… later looted us with 10 songs in one movie cassette with 4 remixes … the “Side A/Side B” with Ameen Sayani’s voiced trailers of movies like Sautan Ki Beti were kickass…. its difficult to imagine those days again …
Anyways…. the post actually reminded me of the movie, though I hardly remember it in patches now, but now I recollect, for a long time a hero of the movie never impressed me as much as this one other male character who will be there in the movies… like Pran in Majboor kinds… for me this movie had the ultimate Macho Man in Suresh Oberoi… it just reminded me of the scene where he takes his belt off and thrashes a fellow officer.. commanding booming voice, Suresh Oberoi was the ideal MAN MAN, in the movie… and then of course I felt pretty bad when Chunky is killed, and then he died again in Khilaf… after which he just sickened me cuz all I could think of was a sickening death whenever Chunky’s name was taken, the only other thing I had heard was that he was hit hard by a horse and had to get stitches done again … sickening fellow … (thank you apna sapna MM, now I can feel normal when I look at him) …anyways Suresh Oberoi was so fkn perfect in his starched suit boot topi et al, it was like impossible for me to see him any other role, to an extent that I still have issues with Vivek Oberoi, he looks exactly like a non moustached SO, and its bloody tough to see anybody with that face to be anything apart from the starch clean inspector
loading...
If you want to see Suresh Oberoi in a Cop role, then I think his best performance was in Mahesh Bhatt’s Thikana, which too had Anil Kapoor as a washed out alcoholic lawyer
loading...
will check it out… he was pretty decent in Vijaypath as well.. what happened to him after that? “Jeena isi ka naam hai” and few forgettable flicks later, he’s disappeared again … he was a great non main lead actor who could play that all important character in movies (non main only cuz he never got a chance, not to say he is bad)
loading...
Suresh Oberoi was good in Mukul Anand’s Insaaf too….Please somebody bring the review of that film, keenly anticipated…The newspaper ads at that time screamed “Vinod Khanna strikes back again”.
loading...
I don’t think anyone can beat my record of the number of times I watched Insaaf… “In the Theater”
loading...
And my record of watching it on VHS…Koi please article likho…
loading...
Sautan ki Beti.. ROFL.. what a name
Yeah.. Baban was unnecessarily killed…really felt sad for him.. and tht khanjar that Lotiya Pathan used was one of those Rambo ones..
loading...
nice to see u here at pfc mr sinha …. this cheer leader needed some saving … watched it on a rented vcp and a rented vhs!! this was at a time when, well lets say when my love for mohini was purely platonic … the only movie i remember watching before this is “Born Free” which is ancient!! gosh I am Old
loading...
thanks anirban for the welcome. vhs were the trend those days ..
dont feel old dude..
loading...
and platonic love for Mrs. Nene… impossible… not even when i was in my pre-puberty years when i watched her in Ek Do Teen
loading...
in college when Beta was released one of my classmates was roumored to have watched it more than 10 times for he couldnt get enuff of her dhak dhak…
Of course the guys and girls watched it separately as nobody could bear to hear them moan allover town for her…
Surprisingly for all the suggestive moves she never looked vulgar…I saw a Saroj Khan show and she swore how Madhuri danced with complete abandon and total trust in Saroj… Good for us !!!
Her chaplinisque take with Prabhu deva in Pukar was awesome. Qualifies for a meethi Cchuri award…if I may say so !!!
loading...
Beta was one helluva movie. I need to watch it again.
Not only for the Dhak Dhak Song. but more so, because of the intense power play between Aruna Irani and Madhuri – Clearly the movie needed to be named Bahu or Souteli Maa….
loading...
damn i cannot modify the comments … mr singha , apologies …. just to add that the battleship potemkin odessa staircase scene was heart breaking for me …. not tezab, surely scenes from it were not “influenced” … noooooo
@ham pe ham
i guess the untouchables scene was a tribute to battleship potemkin

Wow!Tezaab is one of my fav 80’s Hindi films and though I was in school then my memories of the film are still vibrant.I became a huge fan of Madhuri from this film.Keh do ki tum was wonderful and so was So gaya yeh jahan- still one of the fav songs in the geet sessions which sometimes happen.I even remember performing the Chunky Pandey- Dinesh Hingoo wala restaurant scene as a skit in school
The movie brings back so many such memories for me.There was even a silly Tamil remake of the movie called Rojavai Killathey with Arjun and Kushboo.Ek do teen had almost become the new National Anthem.I think after the movie completed 100 days there was a bonus song added in theatres-
“tumko hum dilbar kyon maane”
loading...
   , and I think that was the silliest song in the whole bouquet of songs, though it has a lot of “dara singh ko bulao to jaane” kind of time pass lyrics… ho humm, marketing was so much more simpler and easier then…
loading...
which movies are these gems from??? dara singh ko bulao to jaane..
loading...
tezaab man … there was this song which was added later… “tum ko hum dilbar kyun maane” which had lyrics like “amitabh ko bulao toh jaane kuch karke dikhao toh jaane, Sheeridevi ko bulao toh jaane” and kinds… BTW Sautan Ki beti had Jeetendra… (who else)
loading...
oh.. it wasnt in my audio cassette.. for sure.. or i cnt remember..
hope so its included in the now available dvd..
i think i am sort of in a time machine now tht i cn discuss all abt sautan ki beti

loading...
isko nachaya to kiya..usko nachaya to kya kiya..Sridevi ko nachao to maane…
loading...
ROFL> really??? U guys did a skit of the infamous Restaurant wala scene .. how awesome..
Thanks for sharing the Tamil movie adaptation trivia..
As I said, I learnt my Hindi counting from Ek Do Teen… and as u can imagine.. my ginti stops at 13.. kyunki 13 ke baad…
teraa karu gin gin ke …intezaar..
loading...
Yes Sujoy we did the skit which was fairly appreciated
This tum ko hum dilbar kyon maane was complete with jhankaar beats & all.Now if you hear it you’ll find it to be a perfect ROFL song
loading...
Haha. Kaash un dino Youtube hota
loading...
narasimha was another one of N Chandra’s youth getting into the bad bad world under politician’s wings .. right?
loading...
Really?? Sadly I couldn’t complete watching Narsimha..had to return the VHS
I will watch it soon.. but I do remember the climax scene which i caught up on Zee Cinema.. I think Om Puri gets killed by some clock alarm dong which hits him from above.. coz all throughout the movie he keeps uttering about – Koi Mujhe nahi maar sakta.. naa baaye se ..naa daaye se… naa aage se… naa peeche se…
So he died a virgin I guess
loading...
if he died a virgin then he had a pretty lame name in the movie “baap ji” … anyways yeah that end was specific I guess, the movie does have all the symbolisms,Sunny Deol emerging from a pillar of the wall (oh man I was sqeaking in my seat when I went to the cinema hall, while my dad was missing his aspirin), and Om Puri makes all the hiranyakashyap sounds upar neeche aage peeche astra shastra blah blah blah
loading...
Hahahahahahahaha. Baapji.
Genius!! Ashtra Shashtra.. oh man. Agla movie pakka Narsimha…
loading...
That would be 90s then.
loading...
Natkhat Nineties
loading...
bro…the difference is “koi mujhey” and “koi meri”
enzoy…
loading...

loading...
@ PS- yes it had Sunny Paaji,Om Puri ( baddie ),Dimple Kapadia,Urmila Matondkar and Ravi Behl.It had some good music.I still remember these songs- “jao tum chaahe jahan, yaad karoge wahan” and ” humse tum dosti kar lo,yeh haseen galati kar lo”
Music I think was by the evergreen Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
loading...
Sirjee you’re truly into 90s songs just like me. Once in a while I do listen these 2 songs. Heck, there are so many movies from 80s and 90s whose fate I already knew but still watched them because of the songs including Narsimha which I watched a few months back.
loading...
I recently bought vcd of movie Kanoon because one song of it “Tujhe lift car mein de doon, to gift mujhe kya dogi” was making me nostalgic. Not a good song anyway but still..
loading...
baapre, I am not able to re collect this song…
loading...
wht about, ele.. ele.. ele.. ele.. ele.. laal gulabi aise tere jaise kamal khile.. from bedardi…
loading...
tab toh you must be hearing Jaan Tere Naam, Sainik, Maashooq, Naagmani, Junoon and the party??? the days when Kumar shanu ruled the world… “dil jigar nazar kya hai, mai toh tere liye jaan bhi de doon” …. no clue why, but this remains one of my favorite Shanu songs….
loading...
Kumar Sanu & Himesh ko ek manch pe khada kiya jaye
loading...
international level pe woh hamari ‘naak’ hamesha unchi rakhenge !!
loading...
uske baad sab joote chappal, unde tamatar kuch bhi unhe pyar se arpit karen…
loading...

loading...
Yaar, Sanuda and Himesh baba in the same breath,… bahut naainsaafi hai.
Sanu is far better than Reshamiya.
loading...
yaar Jahan, I like himesh as well yaar.. whatever media asha bhonsle sonu nigam can say, the man has his ishtyle, and the ratio of his non likable songs to likable songs is way too good… bhaad mei jaaye naak gardan ya peth, till he belts out good songs I am his fan …
(PS only for purists, if this helps: read somewhere, the first time ARR heard Aashiq banaya aapne, he declared that the filmfare is definately going to Himesh babu, at least one award for sure…)
loading...
PS buddy nothing personal here. Well, I’m not a fan of Himesh but neither his basher. It’s just that there are some songs by Sanu which I like to listen sometimes, but no such songs by Himesh which I enjoy. I know that people here are having fun but it upsets me when these singers are criticize without any base.
I didn’t like it in Rock On when they were singing Saanso ki Zaroorat ho jaise in Daandiya sequence and Rajeev Masand in his review said “there is a hilarious sequence”. So now singing or liking this song has become hilarious? I may not like it but it is still like hurting others sentiments who like that song. Sweeping comments are something that I dont like.
loading...
Agreed man … and Kumar Sanu remains one of my favs as well (still think the 2 lines ar the end of “sitaron ki mehfil” in KNPH gave me the maximum kick in the entire album for me …. his songs are definately right there in the genres… the rest is not to counter anything you said, rather I completely agree with you, but more or less the situation in hand….
)
……..
regarding Himesh being nasal, currently the trend in itself seems to be a thoda different voice, which has made someone like Sonu Nigam hunt southwards…. warna Lucky Ali, Javed Ali, Rashid, Mohit Chauhan, Naresh Iyer, yaar yeh sab bhi do not give the conventional gharane wale singer kind of feeling… maybe Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is the only one who seems to be from that conventional background rigorous singers, lekin he’s nasal as well, and I love all of them …. toh my words for Himesh were with the same consideration… he just happens to be a more familiar face with his cap gimmicks toh an easier face to throw the bricks at…
…….
making fun of something popular has always happened …. kitne scenes dekhe hai yaar, with comedians doing a SRK or an AB… I dont remember the movie (I think Koi mere dil se pooche) which had an entire Jaspal Bhatti/Rajpal Yadav scenes created on the Mohabattein sequences between AB and SRK … toh guess once you are a celebrity and in public eyes, there are times people just have fun … and I hope (at least on my end) the respect for their work is not gone… its a once in a while laughs… (though do check out koi mere dil se pooche for those 2 guys
loading...
Jahan,PS- of course I still love those 80’s/90’s songs.Dil Jigar Nazar Kya Hai is one of my favorites too.I remember some time back when I was in Ladakh and we were having a 5 hr drive, the cab driver pleasantly surprised us by playing all those Kumar Sanu “golden hits” from Jaan Tere Naam,Sainik,Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi,Mashooq etc. That were a totally different period.
loading...
oh wow… and those drives with those music makes them even more special… I remember one such drive where the cab guy put all kawali and songs from Altaf raaja… apart from his popular ones, all the other songs were really melodious and great to hear… to an extent, my dad who could never tolerate “ishq aur pyar ka mazaa lijiye” was looking to buy the cassette…..
there are these songs by SAnjeev Darshan, Nadeem Shravan, Anand Raj Anand, Anand Milind, old Anu Malik, and few others which takes you back to that time zone… as much as they are away from what we hear today, they can still keep you hooked all the way on your trip …
loading...
The golden playlist of Sanu da – Sainik’s Kitni Hasrat Hai Humein was an awesome track. And Phir Teri Kahani was an outstanding soundtrack. And you only get to hear these songs from an audio cassette played on a rented cab
loading...
Whether one likes 90s songs or not but one cannot deny that those were the times when the music industry reached its pinnacle. Audio cassettes had made their way into almost every households. Those songs could be hear anywhere any time.
loading...
Sainik, Maashooq and jaan tere naam had some nice numbers with some 90’s lines..hum laakh chuppayen pyar magar dunia ko pata chal jaayega… yeh meetha meetha dard mujhe din raat yuhin tadpayega…
loading...
Jaan Tere Naam had an awesome sound track in those days.Apart from Hum Laakh chupayen which is a personal favorite, I also remember
“kal college bandh ho jaayega tum apane ghar ko jaaoge
phir ek ladka ek ladki se juda ho jaayega
woh mil nahi paayega
tum mujhsse juda ho jaaogi bolo kaise rah paaunga”
and also
“first time dekha tumhen hum kho gaya
second time mein love ho gaya
ye akka India jaanta hai ham tumpe marta hai
dil kya cheez hai jaanam apni jaan tere naam karta hai”
This one was a dance number with Ronit Roy dressed up as a band wala.
There were also some songs like
‘In the morning by the sea’
and how about this one-
“Maana Ke College Mein Padhana Chaahiye ,
Padhana Chaahiye Likhana Chaahiye
Romance Ka Bhi Ek Lecture Hona Chaahiye
Jo Ho Romance Period, Love And Dance Period ”
loading...
in the voice of the evergreen, ever sweet asha bhosle..
loading...
Sethu- Songs of Jaan tere naam were quite popular in those days and I still remember girls of my class were too crazy for them… and mana ke college mein song made a very beautiful picture of college life in my mind…
loading...
Sirjee. jaan tere naam’s songs were a regular feature on Chitrahaar.
loading...
Narsimha had some impressive dance moves by Ravi Behl. Never heard of him after that, until he resurfaced on TV with Boogie Woogie.
loading...
ravi behl did some more very memorable flicks like “boyfriend”, “dalaal” and “Ghulaam e Mustafa” .. he did give Atul Agnihotri a very tough competition for the top spot!
loading...
Good job Sujoy!!!!! Fab write-up. I remember the Sri-Mads arguments that cropped up in my clique around that time. All of us were Sri bhakts and then suddenly after Tezaab I jumped ship towards Mads. So then I became this major gaddar ;D lol. Tezaab was an awesome film, and I have been traumatised by Guldasta ever since :p I liked Mads-Chunky so much I actually watched ‘Khilaaf’. Hey Bhagwaan. Kuch comment na karna ki behatar hoga :p
loading...
@ PITU!!!! you saw KHILAF???? (speechless!!!!)
loading...
Me thinks Harman is B-rated. Just like Ravi Kissen jee and Nagma jee. Himess is C-rated and Rakhi Sawant is X-rated
Sorry not replying in the respective thread because of the unavailability of the reply button.
loading...
Chunky n Riya = Manoj Tiwari n Nagma – 20, due to Bangladesh exchange rate
And those movies do not have an IMDb entry
loading...
:yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:
Major Gaddar
And maa kasam u watched Khilaaf. Dekhna hi padega ab to
loading...
Lemme put this way- bulimic logon ko ‘Khilaaf’ bahut acchi lagegi :p Bechari Mads. Kaise kaison ko romance kiya.
loading...
Chunky Pandey is not aisa waisa he made it big in Bangladesh.
loading...
Hahaha. Yep. I even saw one of his Bangladeshi movie trailers on ATN Bangla. Oh man!! And there was a movie in which Chunky and Riya Sen star together. ROFL
loading...
WTF? Chunky Riya opposite each other? are these movies similar to what we had 4 years back with Ravi Kisen and Manoj Tiwari in Bhojpuri cinema?
loading...
Mads was truly one bechaari actress for a while till the 90s happened. 80s fashion was atrocious to say the least!!!.
u forgetting her Sailaab with Aditya Pancholi,
and a couple of musical duds with Sanjay Kapoor..
I think it was Raja…with Ankhiyan milaun and Nazren mili songs…
loading...
Musical duds? It was a huge hit.
loading...
Awesome post Sujoy! Boy oh boy, you’ve made me nostalgic
Time to watch it again, thanks to your post!
I recently purchased a rocking DVD combo of Tezaab and Parinda in Philadelphia … I couldn’t stop smiling at my luck
loading...
Dekho dekho Shriya. Awesome combo that is. Parinda is an awesome movie too. But its more like a polished movie. Tezaab is rough, raw and like a bare-chested full throttle 80’s movie.. I need that combo.. can u pass me the details where u got it from… pwease!
loading...
I did not know that you had picked up this combo DVD. Good for you!!
loading...
You added Teezab to the retro section??? Maaan, that makes me suddenly feel so old! I remember this being released only the other day
What next QSQT and MPK? :witsend:
loading...
Hahaha…. It was released in 1988.. 20 friggin years already.. That is retro man …chillax..
loading...
Arre, I purchased it in the least likely place: an Indian Store in Philadelphia (International House of Food and Spices) …. aise kood ke maine store owner ke haath se DVD ko cheenliyatha :yahoo: So much for madness!
loading...
hain? Shriya, mujhe aaj tak India mei at times I get only North Indian (food/cinema….) in north and South Indian in south…. lekin US mei there is always this complete India … poore India se saaman laake bechte hai …. I found No Smoking and Mouna Ragam stocked together here… picked both….!
… aish karo …there are times you woulf find collections that you may have to move around in India to collect
loading...
Only a desi could come up with this idea… Turning a IHOP into a IHOFs… kamaal hain!
loading...
Tezaab / QSQT was the first audio cassette i ever bought…was in 9th grade and had saved 18 bucks…thanks Gulshanji…without you that wouldnt have been possible.
Amongst the other things the movie did was that it lengthened careers of Laxmi-Pyare by at least 8-10 years. It helped T-Series establish itself as one of the majore players in the Hindi film music business. The concept of “flashback mein flashback” was probably used for the first time in Hindi cinema (take that Ghajini)…probably the first time that a song was addded 10-15 weeks after the movie was released to extend the box office run (though the song Amitabh was eeeeks). It made the type of Hindi i spoke “apun…vaat laga dalega” cool.
AMongst the first Hindi movies to use an English explanation sub title – Tezaab… Is Acid. The trend that started with Tezaab was escorted to its pinnacle by Raj Kanwar’s Daag the Fire.
Apparently the extras used for Ek Do Teen werent wven registered junior artists – too add authencity (???), Chandra saheb had gotten guys of the streets / chawls…
check this image (similar to my first ever audio cassette) – the tharki expression of the extras ….no woinder mads was uncomfortable

Aah Tezaab- A Violent Love Story.
Movie came when i was doing my Engg. Watched it the first time, and fell hook, line and sinker for Madhuri Dixit. Bunked college, classes, and watched the movie around 20 times. Used to save up whatever money i got, just for the movie. Became a crazy fan of Madhuri, my room flooded with her pics, used to browse every movie magazine, that had her picture on the cover.
Movie was good enuf. Loved the tapori chawl lingo. Loved the face offs between Kiran Kumar-AK. ANd the comedy by Chunky Pandey & co. It was a mast entertainer, with all the masala in right proportions. And of course Ms. Dixit, the piece de resistance.
loading...
just the man I was waiting for…
loading...
I was also thinking that ratna sirjee is missing the party.
loading...
BTW Indra Kumar should be eternally grateful to Madhuri, without her Beta and Raja would never have been the super hits they were. Beats me though how Anil Kapoor ended up winning the Best Actor for Beta over Aamir(JJWS) and AB(Khudagawah). Still remember Dimple opening the envelope, and being shocked, ‘I can’t believe it, Anil Kapoor for Beta’. Honestly the movie should have been renamed as Saas-Bahu or Beti.
loading...
Even remember Khaled’s review in TOI those days mentioning that Beta should be named Beti & Raja as Rani….BTW where is he nowadays, didnt find his review on 3 Idiots here and no rememberance articles off late(Koi producer mil gaya kya for his another torture)
loading...
http://twitter.com/ohkhalid/status/6992754489
loading...
what is his point.. tht he cannot relate to the engineering college community..like the millions of engineers tht graduate each year.. and that is indulgent…???
of course he can’t.. coz he is not an engineer..and he can’t be
loading...
Thanks for the link and it seems he will go solo now….
loading...
yeah, seems to be setting up his own website if you go by his tweets.
loading...
WRT to ancillary people, I think Madhuri’s agent was the first one who shot into limelight… Riku Rakesh Nath became a known person just by being MD’s assistant… even launched his son… who went on to even be a part of JP Dutta’s flick… poor boy, must have seen tons of success through his dad’s client, must have always dreamt of going big one day with the ewlite company around him
loading...
Ah!you are talking about Karan Nath.He had a hit in the form of Yeh Dil Aashiqana which had standard songs from Nadeem -Shravan-Kumar Sanu. This was inspired by the Kandahar hijacking. His debut movie Pagalpan was a flop.I also remember watching his movie- Tum – A Dangerous Obsession  where he gets obsessive with Manisha Koirala.
loading...
baapre, I was trying to recollect paagalpan …. the one with Bharat dabholkar as the only person you can remember…. man … that was one pagalpan … you remember the movie name …   … salute thee
loading...
Koch Kallan….Did all kind of things when Manisha was not in her senses looking lovely in that blue saree…Paagalpan even had Joy Fernandes and 2 more brothers who always indulged in violence…
loading...
The only thing i remember Tum is for one steamy sequence between Karan Nath, and Netanya Singh. That babe was sizzling hot.
loading...
then you have to see him with Manisha Koirala… pretty sure ek choti si love story ka idea happened after look at Manisha doing a child molestation on Karan Nath in TUM
loading...
Speaking of Pagalpan…it had pretty good songs…”Mera dil kehne laga” is still on my iPod
loading...
Sethu sahab, u need to be rescued.. hehe.. Karan Nath’s Tum was a disastrous flick.. in every sense..
loading...
Dude- of course it was a disastrous flick.I saw it in Basushree cinema,Kolkata all alone. My friends of course refused to accompany me for the same
loading...
Oh shit what coincidence, TUM was being played in a cable channel last night :banginghead: & it even had Bobby Darling in his previous AVATAR before he went all cosmetics.
loading...
The first thing that I said to my friends after watching Beta was that Anil, Madhuri and Aruna Irani will win Filmfare awards that year.
I was an AB fan then but I did not like KG and I did not like his performance either. Amitabh was the same with dialogues like “Sarzameen-e-hindusthan”.
I somehow missed JJWS when it released. Aamir indeed gave a very good performance but it was similar to his other student acts which he used to do regularly around that time. Aamir was considered a chocolate hero around that time and not many held him in great esteem unlike today.
Anil on the other hand at least did a different role (though he did the flop Eeshwar which had a similar role) and was very good in it (though he copied Raj Kapoor a lot). I think what clinched the award for him were his histrionics in the climax scene.
Dimple did not even open the envelope. She just put the envelope in the lights and called out Anil’s name.
People say Beta should be Beti and Raja should be Rani and that they were hits due to Madhuri. Then what about Mrityudand and PremGranth, why did they flop?
For all the talk of an heroine dominating a hero, I saw the movie Raja in the top theatre in Hyderabad and when Sanjay Kapoor slapped Madhuri, the audience clapped and I am not kidding. I saw that and thought how MCP the audience was.
loading...
Just finished watching Firoz Khan’s Jaanbaaz which again had Anil and Dimple. Now, about your second last para. people say that the movies should be named Beti and Rani because these are supposed to be the masculine titles of a film where the lady overshadowed the male leads, on which the titles were based on.
loading...
Regarding Anil-Madhuri Jodi, it was a mixed result, while there were the big hits like Tezaab, Beta, Ram Lakhan, there were some big time clunkers also, Jeevan Ek Sungursh, Jamai Raja, Rajkumar.
Anil i feel got carried away after Tezaab, Ram Lakhan. He felt he could pull off anything. Anil’s strength lay in his Aam Aadmi kind of roles, the guy next door or more intense roles like Tezaab, Viraasat. I think the problem was he just wanted to be everything. So he did the Jeetu kinda stuff, with the bump n grind routine in movies like Jamai Raja, Pratikaar. Then he tried doing the Govinda style double entendre roles in Andaaz. While he did manage to give hits consistently, he ended up as the nowhere person, not really fitting in anywhere.
loading...
How can i forget Andaaz…The song Khada hai Khada hai was a hoot…Milke karenge hum kukuku…(David saab phir se 1 movie banao Shola aur Shabnam..Aankhen ishtyle)
loading...
another one from Andaaz was oh maal gaadi tu dhakka laga…
loading...
AK in quite a few interviews said that Roop Ki …. was the biggest turning point for his whole family, they had invested every penny into it, and by the time the movie was still being made he had to sign up random movies for money, and then again do whatever came his hand to support his family after the movie bombed… this includes flicks like Loafer and even laadla, which went on to be a super duper hit… but guess Wanted set Boney Kapoor for life anyways… hmmm …sridevi, sacrificing brother, and wanted… what more can Boney WANT in his life…
loading...
PS- even before Wanted came along Boney Kapoor had that monster hit in 2005- No Entry
loading...
true.. I remembered No entry, but Wanted was mammoth, I think you take all that you earned from wanted, put into real estate and share markets, get some advice from any ambani brother and you are SO SET FOR LIFE!
loading...
Hehe very true.Boney is wanting to make sequels of No Entry and Mr.India.The talks have been on for quite a while.Lets see if they do succeed in making them.
loading...
Rajkumar was more to do with the story being old as the Himalayas.. but I personally enjoyed Jeevan ek sangharsh and Jamai Raja..
Another awesome movie of Anil which I love to bits is Eeshwar..
loading...
Amazing post and rocking comments.. What days those were..!
loading...
DHanyawaad. Please stay tuned for a follow up post on this. And also on my blog, a “too-hot-for-PFC” wala tribute to Tezaab post

I dont like this bashing of the 80s stuff or Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, especially if you enjoyed the same things in your youth or childhood days. Yea, tastes keep changing but it doesn’t mean something which we enjoyed earlier suddenly becomes bad. BTW, I’m child of 80s and I love watching 80s and 90s movies. Even if I know how the movie is going to be, I cant resist the temptation to see them.
loading...
Im not bashing Kumar Sahnu yaar. He sang his best adn I liked most of his songs as he sounded like Kishore Kumar a lot but when he got nasal it was terrible…
I was disgusted with the haircuts and costumes then and am not apolegetic about it now. YOu watch some movies like “Phool aur Kaante” and it is so shitty and the choreography is so c-grade..you wonder how it made the cut then…
loading...
Agree with you on Kumar Sanu. Just because the guy is not singing anymore people have started bashing him. But then even Udit, Abhijeet and Sonu are also singing few songs nowadays. Most of them are sung by either the music composers or some new singers.
Kumar Sanu did go nasal sometimes but not always. If nasal singing is the yardstick to say a singer is bad then I am afraid Saigal, Mukesh, Noorjehan, Shamshad Begum, Geeta Dutt, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Adnan Sami, Ghulam Ali would all have to be considered bad singers. Even Kishore was nasal in his early songs.

agreed, I find Asha Bhonsle very nasal as well and RDB nasal in a very different way (the throat to nose voice), and of course there was the ‘asha – himesh slapgate’, which was absolutely not needed….
the fun, as I mentioned earlier, is made of celebrities just for the kick … as much as we feel bad for Kumar Sanu, he is made fun of cuz he has tons of memorable songs behind him, thats the reason for him and not Babul Supriyo or anybody else… and I feel in similar ways for Himesh… I ve liked most of his songs, and in the same yards I dont understand all the hue and cry about him…but thats what happens to the most popular ones, they get spoken about and then the liberty is taken …
@ Bavrenain (=DnD, had my guess on that as well from the first comment) in that case 15 years down all the 90s movies will look gibberish with all designer clothes and effermate styles and accessories, salaam namaste and kinds will be OTT, and of course if we move towards songless movies then ‘Dola re Dola’ in Devdas might look vulgar display of money and obnoxious…. so should we still wonder how they made the cut?
loading...
@PS
Agreed with you. yesterday my comment didnt appear for quite some time so i made a similar comment later.
BTW, I saw your top 10 movies list in PFC club. Again more or less in sync with mine. My list wouldn’t be very different May be Kaminey on top then Dilli6 and no KI etc. devd didnt like much for the same reasons as yours.
loading...
Hahahaha. Dil Bole Hadippa is way inferior to 80s ka koi bhi B-grade stuff.. Just because of one fact.. that 80s movies did not have any trace of Rakhi Sawant
loading...
May be because that was the time when most of us started watching films and as it is said first love always remains the first…pehla pehla pyar…
loading...
Ekdum sahi… the charm of the movies of the 80s was something totally different… I plan on exploring more and more
loading...
INSAAF k baare mein likho yaar…FYI its a real good film…If you have not seen it then dont expect it to be a trash and be disappointed
Vinod Khanna really was at his dashing best….

I was in 8th standard and was not allowed to watch movies alone unless vetted and approved by parents/relatives/other elders. Under this rule, the only Mr India had made it before (wonder how in spite of the rain song)! So there was no chance of being permitted to watch Tezaab. But as luck would have it, I was away from home for a week for an NCC camp. On the last day, after the campfire, we were allowed to rent a VCR and watch Tezaab! Even as a 13 year old, I could feel that this move was a break from what I had seen before. Ek Do Teen blew me over with its stylistic picturisation and Madhuri entered my adolescent fantasies.
Unfortunately, N Chandra ruined it for me with Narsimha, Yugandhar, Hamlaa and such rotten films that followed. I remember abandoning Hamlaa in the interval. The only other movie where I have done the same is Suryavanshi!
loading...
Remember Anil kapoor’s sister Suparna in one Malayalam movie opposite Nitish Bharadwaj…Good Night Mohan had produced it and poor souls like me had to accompany parents as it was organised for some Malayalee committee :witsend:
loading...
I guess she appeared in Bharathan’s movie Vaishali, based on a mythological tale. Did catch her in some Southie movies, with a bikini and all, quite a hottie.
loading...
It was Njan Gandharvan by Patmarajan(his last one)…Searched in IMDB now..
loading...
Yes Suparna Anand was a hottie.Dunno why she couldnt sustain even after doing movies like Tezaab,Vaishali,Njan Gandharvan which were quite different and noticed
loading...
Tezaab’s write was kamlesh Pandey and “producer” (read moneybag financer)was Dinesh Gandhi. Pandey is still around but Mr Gandhi has disappeared from the scene, along with Bharat Shah. These two were financers and ideally should have remained anonymus. But I guess they would insist on getting the FIRST credit in titles and even on posters! Other names in this “league” were Dinesh Patel and Vinod Doshi.
loading...
Gandhi,Patel,Shah, Doshi(Gujju Brigade)….Bechara Jhamu chala gaya…
loading...
Is Bharat Shah the same diamond merchant guy who financed Devdas… has he disappeared? He used to always sit next to the biggies frontseats at every award function
loading...
Wonder if this is the same Dinesh Gandhi http://entertainment.oneindia.in/kannada/top-stories/2009/dinesh-gandhi-arrested-221009.html
loading...
Tezaab…wwhhoouu… it was really a tezaab in the form of Anil Kapoor, one of his performance as Munna tadipar… I could’nt watch it when it was released but saw it 1991… and from that onwards many times… Mohini ko Lotia ki qaid se koi bacha sakta tha to sirf Munna… Lotia Pathan was too good and the same was the case with Babban. What to say about Mohini…oohh….
loading...
Akash- remember that disco dandiya scene in the railway platform and the fight scene right after that with Anil Kapoor surprising the goons with “dandiyas”? that was impressive.Even Anupam Kher was fabulous in the movie.
loading...
Sethu- even Annu Kapoor as guldasta in a small role was impressive and yes I remember that dandiya song… Munna tadipar teaching goons lesson of their life through dandiya…
loading...
Mujhe to 20 saal lag gaye poora dekhne mein… Lotiya is featured in my Top 20 villains of all time.. do chk this out

Ashutosh Rana (whatever his name was) in Sangharsh, Maharani from Sadak etc. villains are missing.
loading...
Naam tha uska.. Lajja Shankar Pandey. And sorry to say that I am yet to watch Sadak.. but surely will check it out soon..
And there were only 20 slots to be filled.. surely Bolly can provide some chilling villains

I thought “Tezaab” sounded so exotic because I had no idea what it meant. I only realized it meant “acid” after watching that scene where Anupam Kher pours it on the leaves of a house plant …. haila, that scene sold me … I decided that I simply HAD to watch this cool movie
But I have often wondered how Anil didn’t die after jumping off from the college building …
@Ajay and PS: yes, I have showed off that combo to my friends whenever I gotten a chance
loading...
from Anil to Sharman … jumping off the building has never really left bollywood…. special mention to Shilpa Shetty who probably was the only main lead to die after jumping off a building… actually Anil Kapoor’s whole song after jumping off the building “keh do ki tum ko meri varna” made sure I never attempt a suicide by jumping off a building… saala haath paanv toot gaye aur mare nahi toh???
Crazy that a man jumps off the building in his college years and within a short time gets into Navy with all physical examinations passed… man … my thumb surgery took me 6 months to start moving it again, and my friend in a bus accident couldnt walk for 2 years… and then of course Anil Kapoor is Mr India.. sab kuch ho sakta hai
loading...
hindi filmi heroes defy all rules of physics..
shilpa ab hindi kaha rahi
navy examination u talk abt.. didnt u see the saphedi of his suit.. wo bhi mumbai ke pradooshit ilaake mein.. ye baat alag hai ki tht was in the 80s
shud cover this in a separate post
cheers to all who commented on this post, and made it so much enjoyable. i promise to be back with a “sequel”
Cheerio!!

It took years for me to realise the meaning
And these Hindi filmi ke duraachari atyachaari villains are really too awesome with their deviant behaviours
I am soon ordering some more 80s ke DVDs

I am currently watching a movie called Insaaf Apne Lahoo Se ( 1994 ) on Zee Cinema. Its a full on Bollywood masala movie with Shotgun Shatru,Sanju baba,Shekhar Suman,Sonam,Farha,Kader Khan,Gulshan Grover,Kulbushan Kharbanda etc.Dunno how I never watched this movie before
loading...
I dunno. There are some people who critisize 80s and 90s but me thinks that they are fun in their own way. I’m child of the 80s and I love watching 80s and 90s stuffs no matter what the movie is. Even if I know that I’m going to hate the end product, I can’t resist watching. So yea the comments of bavrenain etc. upsets me but it’s all right.
loading...
BTW, I’m in the middle of Heer-Raanjha, Anil Kapoor and Sridevi waali.
loading...
oye hoye… zee cinema??
loading...
No, on my comp playing a vcd.

Jahanpanah Tussi Great Ho….Tohfa Kabool Karo :yahoo:
loading...
its only in 80s and 90s can we still remember a dhansu entry of a debut actor standing on top of 2 bikes and pulling it off… man that takes the cake for any opening scene ever according to me…
loading...
u referring to Ajay Devgun in Phool aur Kaante…saw some songs of it yesterday…it was super shady but songs were catchy…
I remember my then boyfriend who had already seen it …refused to take me to this movie…I never got to see it really…Am obliged to him for 1 thing at least.
loading...
The movie was not that bad. Performed better than Lamhe which was released on the same day. Though Lamhe was overall a better movie.
loading...
Phool Aur Kaante was a super hit in those days. The songs in particular were a big time craze.Once in a while I can still listen to the songs.Maine Pyar tumhi se kiya hai, premi aashiq awara, dil yeh kehta hai, dheere dheere pyar ko nibhana hai, tumse milne ko dil karta hai- all of them were pretty good.
loading...
Aila yeh kab aaya tha…Remember a film called Adharm starring Sanju & Shatru..But yeh kab aaya…Why didnt my VCR have the previlege of taking this VHS inside…
loading...
Adharm was a stuck-in-cans film. It released in 1993 with Sharu and Anita Raaj!! You can see dinosaurs in the background of most scenes. It was noticed briefly for a tapori song which went ‘Tunna Tunna Tak Tak Tunna’.
loading...
Sorry to sound gross, but in college, due to the graphic similarity, we often referred to VHS going into the VCR to indicate you-know-what ! What days! What adrenaline!

I would like to request the author and commenters of this post to take some time to visit PFCOne and watch the movies in the festival, and write in your comments for the filmmakers. We have just one day left before the festival closes, so please take the time and respect those who picked up a camera for the first time and let their film do the talking.
loading...
will do for sure sire… taking some easy time off in the office, so typing away to glory, though would watch the videos only in the evening once back home… saw through the day 1 entries, and honestly did not have too much to comment… day 2 entries started getting me hooked.. but rest assured ‘d pass my feedbacks as soon as I access the One Minute Ones as I get back home…
loading...
I also saw first 2 days and posted my feedback…
a. Some were suicidal, 20s guy disgusted with life types..
b. social cause. some tacky some very well don..like munni.
3. Lots of anti-smoking anti-drug ones…really dramatic
4. comedies..animations, one swith chubby guy rocked.
5. really poetic ones trying to sound esoteric …
loading...
It is nice to remember the past but equally important to encourage those in the present. Please step out and visit the festival. After all PFC is not just about blogging and commenting but much beyond that.

Doing it right now Sir.

Those who grew up in the 80’s and early 90s probably were the most fortunate gen in the country…I mean just look at it
- All idealism that our parents faced in 50’s, 60’s had completely eroded
- The josh of all the rebellious streak pf the 70’s had gone out
- corruption and terrorism and riots were becoming a way of life in the 80s
- No cable TV; Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Buniyaad, Hum Log, Mahabharat, Ramayamn, Qile Ka Rahasya, and Karamchand (which I loved and implored my parents to let me stay awake and see) – wonder what happened to Punkuj Parashar after Raj Kumar and Benaras)were hit series
- and when cable tv came in 91-92 ; saw as many english movies on star movies as possible for the kissing scenes….there were articles on Bold n Beautiful and Santa Barbara…
- Shabbir Kumar, Mohd Aziz were amongst the most sought after singers (BTW – Trivia for you guys….Which song did Shabbir sing in Tezaab)
- The approach that made Manji cool in the 70’s caused that MARD a lot of DARD in the 80’s
- Films like Souten Ki Beti, Hukumat (though Tehelka and Mr Dong are amongst my all time favs), Tarzan, Kasam Paida Karne Wale ki, (many Prabhujis film in fact), Pyar Jhukta Nahi, Ilzaam, Paap Ki Duniya were hits
- Ramsays were still making movies like Bandh Darwaza, Manoj Kumar was still giving under rated gems like Clerk, Kalyug Aur Ramayan (and I was paying to watch themat Bijlee cinema, Matunga Mumbai)
- K Bapiah, B Subhash, T Rama Rao, Ashok Gaekwad, Shibu Mitra, Vimal Kumar etc etc were considered in demand directors (Lawrence D’Souza is a creature of the 90s)…AND LASTLY
– Farahs shots in Rakhwala, Kimi Katkars dance in Darya Dil, were considered “hot”,
loading...
@ sourabh : Shabbir inm tezaab.. so gaya yeh jahaan… (The para when Anil’s character sings… Hum paas bhi hain.. aur duur bhi hain.. azaad bhi hain majboor bhi hain…)
That para between alka n shabbir and the way it was picturised… still gives me goosebumps..
I remember maine yeh movie ek dusre mohalle mein jaake ek ajnabi ke ghar pe VCR pe subah 4 baje dekhi thi… I still remember these details.. do I need to say anything more about the movie??

Hi Sujay
Nice post on Tezaab…i loved this movie and have watched around 45-50 times…so much that original VHS of tezaab got worn out…and again saw it when Star Gold bought it back…
My fav Dialogue “teri zindagi our mauth fasla munna ki chaaku ki dhaar se jyada nahin hai”…
cheers

Hahaha.. Kya dialogue hai yaar… Made my post worth it
I will be writing a follow up. Hope u chk it out soon. Cheers!

I watched Tezaab a month back. Anil, I love. Madhuri as usual, looked average. Her acting is FAKE. She cannot cry boss. I remember when Anil goes to Basti to save her and her reaction then. No sponanity. She always seems to be trying to act barring just one exception-Lajja.Juhi was much more natural. Alas, her sec was not as good as Rinku Rakesh Nath tdo create all media hype and publicity.
