Extraordinary Songs in Ordinary Albums

Indian music for most part (except classical, Gazals and Bhajans) is captive to our film industry. Success of a song or an album depends on many factors outside the control of the creator of the music. Sometimes, the film doesn’t do well and the music gets largely ignored because of it. Many times, even if the film does well, the picturization of the song on screen or who lip synched it can make a huge difference. That’s the genesis of this post, great songs that got ignored for one reason or other.

My personal interest in Hindi film music has been revived in last few years. Initially when I first had money to buy audio cassettes, I always used to end up buying collections of old Hindi film songs or Gazal collections of Mehendi Hasan, Gulam Ali and later on Begum Akhtar, Farida Khanum and many others. Somehow, I never saw value in buying an audio cassette of a contemporary film, either because the songs weren’t good enough for me or they were being played all over the place anyway, so why buy them. Also, there was always the expectation factor, where the album would have one or two good songs and rest everything would be useless, making you repent spending the money. Later when we moved from cassettes to CDs my spending habits didn’t change. In last 5-7 years, it became kind of unfashionable to buy audio CDs. Why buy ‘em when you could download them for free. I did my share of it, if for nothing else, just to fit in. Otherwise, you ran the risk of being looked at as a technical retard or too old for the times, “Haven’t downloaded songs? Are you serious?” Being in US, the Desi crowd around us tends to be technically very savvy which I find a bit hard to deal with at time. I mean for how long can you discuss the latest models for digital cameras or where to look for cheapest or latest(depending on what kind of Desi gathering it is) DVD players. Man, I get tired of it; I am kind of old school, care for the songs, the tunes and lyrics than what kind of music system it is playing on. So even people like me stopped buying music, that’s the point.

But in recent years, I had to change my mind and was forced to go out and buy some Hindi film albums. I couldn’t resist it, most of the songs sounded so great that I wasn’t happy owning them one at a time, I longed for the entire soundtrack, even the instrumental theme. It happened with Khoya Khoya Chand, Johny Gaddar, Life in a Metro was exceptional, Rock On was every penny worth it, Khosla ka Ghosla and OLLO were so different and cute (couldn’t come up with another word to describe the music of OLLO, forgive my limited vocabulary) and this year so far Dev D and Gulaal. And yes, how can I forget RDB, some of the best music that ARR has created as far as I can see. The nice thing is that you can play these songs online before you decide to buy them, kind of like test ride. That’s what I do now these days.

But while listening to songs online you come across some unexpected gems even though the album may not be so great and the entire sound track may not be worth it. That’s when you wish you could own a own or two from these albums. So, here’s my tribute to some such songs.

Ek Meetha Marz from Welcome to Sajjanpur

There is something to Mohit Chauhan’s voice. Not just Mohit Chauhan, we seem to have abundance of singing talent in the industry right now, thanks to the talent shows, I guess. Almost every new album has some fresh voice, most of them very good. We no longer have to hear the tired voices of Udit Narayan, monotonous notes of Kumar Shanu or imperfect Rafi cloning in Sonu Nigam’s voice. All these singers were great when they started out, but grew stale after some time. So, it’s nice to hear lots of fresh voices like that of Mohit Chauhan. Mohit starts out this song in a very slow relaxed voice and maintains his slow pace throughout. It’s his slow relaxed singing, coupled with some nice lyrics by Swanand Kirkire, with words like Meetha Marz and Dawa ka karz, makes the song a sweet romantic number. Madhushree (who is she? another fresh voice?) complements him beautifully and in fact takes over the show in later part of the song.

When WTS came out, the music wasn’t a big hit. While watching the film on DVD, I was about to forward the song when Mohit’s voice hit me and I sat through the entire song. The tune kind of stayed with me and later on I was forced to go online and listen to it again. Go check it out.

Kash Lagaa from No Smoking

Now, this was not supposed to be an ordinary album. Gulzar and VB were teaming up to create music for an enigmatic film by an enigmatic director. Perhaps the success of Omkara music before that sat the expectations very high or the box office failure of the movie did it, somehow the music of No Smoking didn’t get it’s due. This song was particularly ignored as all the promos focused on Phoonk De (was being promoted almost like an item number with Bipasha Basu and all, bad marketing idea) and yeah Ashtray. Anurag Kshyap did use this song in the film. The picturization was whacky and funny in some weird way and I admit I haven’t fully understood it till date. (The guy playing John’s brother in the film gets up from his hospital bed and keeps trying to kill himself while John takes kash after kash in front of the police and the song plays in the background. So, was the idea that our relatively keep screwing themselves and we get the blame for it? Was that the meaning? I had this struggle with most scenes in NS, I think I am close to getting the meaning of the song, but can’t quite nail it. I think that’s where the director succeeds, in playing with our mind.)

Check this out if you missed it

Back to the song, Gulzar and Vishal have created many extra ordinary songs, most of them very popular. This one to me, is a class apart, probably the best one that the duo has ever created. This is a complex song, takes some listening to and following to the lyrics before you can grasp the whole meaning of what they are saying. Once you do that, you realize what a master class this song is. Gulzar sab has written some great lyrics once again…sample this

Jindagi Ai Kash Laga – 2
Hasraton Ki Raakh Uda

Yeh Jahaan Paani Hai, Bulbula Hai, Paani Hai
Bulbulon Pe Rukna Kya, Paaniyon Pe Behta Ja, Behta Ja (one of those “world is a Maya” type lines but so well written)

Jalati Hai Tanhaayiyaan, Tapi Hain Raat Raat Jaag Jaag Ke

Udati Hain Chingaariyaan, Guchchhe Hain Laal Laal Geeli Aankh Ke

(Seems related to Gulzar’s idea of rishte jalte rahe rat bhar, hamne tape and all that..I wish I could be .01% as expressive as Gulzar sab, how do you do it?)

Hum bhi kataar mein hain, jab bhi sawari aye (which sawari are they referring to…seems like sawari to other world and which kataar or line, is this the eternal line of death that we are all in)

The entire song is multi-layered like that and multiple meanings can be derived from it. Compressing so many thoughts so many different types of words (uple, dheriyan, jugnu,, pani, bulbule, sawari, kataar) and then make them fit together so that they make lyrical sense, only Gulzar can do it and only VB, or may be RD before him, could string a tune out of it.

But, if I said Gulzar and VB combination was the best thing to the song, that’s not true. What makes the song unique is the use of Sukhwinder and Daler Mehendi side by side with great punch. Vishal also appears in the credos as a singer but he gets completely eclipsed by the superb combination of Daler and Sukhwinder. Whoever, thought of using these two voices together in a song, hats off to you. I can go on and on about Kash Lagaa but will stop here.

Guncha Koi from Mein Meri Patni aur Who

This song has a Lukhnow ki sardi type appeal. If you close yours eyes, it lifts you straight into a party type of atmosphere in bheeni bheeni sardi of Lukhnow, exactly where the song was used in the film. (Another song that does that to me is “Aaj Jane ki jid na karo” by Farida Khanum. Every time I listen to that, I get transported to an auditorium in Delhi, on a December evening where everybody is wearing sweaters.) This song has similar type of appeal.

Mohit Chauhan does wonderful job delivering a slow Gazal here. His vocals carry the entire song without the help of much music here. Writing could have been better, but the singing more than makes up for it. If you are a Gazal connoisseur, the lyrics here are probably too simplistic for you. In the film KK Menon does a decent job of lip synching to it, a variation of a role for him from the intense roles he typically portrays. The album carries two versions of it, a Guncha unplugged version is a bonus that has some additional couplets that are not there in the on screen version.

So, if you are in a mood for some lightweight Gazal, with a tune that you can play on guitar, this is your song.

Raag Banke from Badhai ho Badhai

This film does the same mistake that many other Hindi films do; focus on a concept without thinking about having a story. In this film, the concept was a fat Anil Kapoor. It seems they spent lots of money hiring make up artists and Mr. Kapoor spent hours before the shooting ready, only if they could spend a fraction of the time on the story and dialog writing!

Needless to say, the film was bad and bombed at box office. The music of the film ranges from very good in some tracks to ordinary and crap in others. It seems as if the music director had the same problem that the director of the movie had- losing interest half the way. Being Anu Malik, I am not sure if ran out of sources to copy from.

But amidst this ruin, one song lingered. I have no idea if the tune is lifted from somewhere or was a pure moment of inspiration for Mr. Malik. Alka Yagnik is adequate but what lifts the song is the relatively fresh voice of Shaan. This is before Shaan probably decided the hard world of playback singing wasn’t for him, and decided to focus on anchoring shows that discovered better talents than he himself. The lyrics for most part are good, and focus on saregama, raag, pyar, zindagi and all. Javed Akhtar throws in some Chamkile Din, Rangeenein Raaten, sapnay and all. Some annoying tum ta na na plays in the background (Anu Malik goes extra mile, please Malik sab…), but other than that the song is great. Shaan’s voice is fresh, full of enthusiasm. I won’t provide the video clip as you’ll kill me for it. Ms. Shilpa Shetty and lots of extras in black dress completely kill the song. Satish Kaushik was the director, what else you expect.

Mustafa-Mustafa from Duniya Dilwalon Ki (Kadhal Desam)

I absolutely adore this film. I am not sure it was a remake or dubbed from Telugu into Hindi. Tabu looked old for the role and I had never seen the two leading male actors before, Vineeth and Abbas, but I still loved the film. The film was clearly made in a very light hearted manner. I still remember one scene where they had the shot of the college and everything looks dark and grim. Then they show girls entering the campus and the scene changes to spring and colorful flowers dropping from trees. It was silly but I liked it, reminded me of my college days what used to be in our minds 80% of the time. There is another scene, more like a copy from West Side Story, where kids from one college chase those from other college until they get too far and realize that they have become a minority. Then the chase starts in the other direction. I also liked the way the two heroes become friends and the novel idea of two friends fighting for the girl instead of trying to sacrifice in typical triangular love stories.

Anyway, the best thing about the film was Mustafa, the song. I don’t remember any other song from the film, and ARR has created better songs before or after, but there is some endearing quality to this song. It stands out as a campus song about friendship, is modern and hip with Hinglish lyrics and reminds me of my first year in engineering college, may be because of the picturization, where they show ragging and other freshman type activities. If you are missing old friends who have drifted away from you, listen to this song.
The maestro himself does the singing and uses lots of background chorus, common in early part of ARR’s music. Lyrics may not be great poetry, but do justice to the mood of the song. Also, it seems the lyrics writer had the challenge of fitting into a pre-existing Telugu tune. I guess, Telugu lyrics might have been better and more fitting.

This song did have the potential to be a campus anthem on friendship, but the film (Hindi version) came, wasn’t properly marketed and bombed on the box office.

Le Chalen Doliyon Mein – Filhaal

Forget what I said about Anu Malik earlier and listen to this absolute gem of a song. This song is so non-Anu Mailk, almost VB like.
Filhaal was supposed to be the debut of the elegant Meghna Bosky Gulzar as a director and had high expectations. Unfortunately, Boskiji focused too much on pastel colors, song picturization and women issues than the real story. The cast was totally mis caste and even Tabu looked bad and acted badly in the film. But the songs were nice, with superb lyrics by Gulzar sab and Anu Malik in his inspired mode. However, the title song took all the publicity and this song was ignored. Box office failure of the film didn’t help either. But listen to this song and you would turn into a die hard romantic, even if you frequently get labeled as a patthar dil by your wife or girl friend. The song has very elegant lyrics, expressing the pre-marriage, after engagement romantic feelings in a perfect setting. Ungliyon mein pahen lo yeh rishta, as a thought has been used by Gulzar saab in other places also. The sounds of a beachy/sandy atmosphere, lazy afternoon and warm namkeen water are well captured in the tune ending with shehnai sounds as the girl accepts the proposal.
Roop Kumar Rathod does the singing and does a great job. Why do we hear so little of him? Last I remember a Roop Kumar song was in Border, once again an Anu Malik album

This is my list, folks, I am sure you have yours. Please do share your list of songs that you think deserve a second chance.

    @A Singh,
Music of No Smoking is very good.
“Yeh Jahaan Paani Hai, Bulbula Hai, Paani Hai”

It should be Ye Jahaan Phani hai.
    (This world is mortal)

Picturization of Kash Lagaa, seems confusing. Or may be a bead is missing which could connect it with the film in a proper way, as it was done with the Ayesha Takia episode.
If you recall the film, after this song, Kash Lagaa, K is taken on remand and he falls in to the water and he gets up in bath tub at his home.
Film goes to phhoonk de song where K raises his hand towards Baba Bengali and he slides betwen the legs of people and he gets up again in Siberia
as was shown in very first scene of the film and here he asks Ayesha if she is alive.
K’s brother’s angle is not given this final treatment which is given to his wife.

    A. Singh,

Nice Selection, though Kadal Desam looks a bit out of the place as it does belong to one generation back (almost or more than ten years from the other songs in the lot)..

But am happy and disappointed both at your try on “Kash Lagaa”.. Happy because you tried.. its certainly a difficult song to try (as much as the film) but disappointed that your ears couldn’t pick up the correct words, am sure you would have enjoyed the song more with exact lyrics..

    like

    Zindagi Ae Kash Lagaa

    should be
    Zindagi me kash lagaa
    Zindagi ke kash lagaa
    Hasaraton ki raakh udaa

    “?? ???.. ?? ???
    ??????? ??? ?? ???
    ??????? ?? ?? ???
    ?????? ?? ??? ????”

then again “Ye jahaan paani hai” should read “Ye jahaan faani hai, bulbulaa hai paani hai”

faani is fragile.. that is going to end..

    ?? ???? ????? ??
    ??????? ?? ???? ??
    ???????? ?? ????? ????
    ??????? ?? ???? ?? ???? ??…
    ?? ??? , ?? ???

    ???? ??? ????????
    ???? ??? ???-??? ???-??? ??
    ????? ??? ??????????
    ?????? ??? ???-??? ???? ?? ??

“Guchhe hain laal laal geeli aankh ke” should read “laal laal geeli aag ke” (Cigarette Smoke)

    ??~ ????? ?? ???? ????
    ????? ??? ??????? ???
    ????? ??? ??? ????
    ????? ?? ??????? ???
    ?? ????? ?? ?? ??
    ???? ???? ?? ????

It is a kind of satire on Life..

Why do you care for life and belongings (relations), just enjoy it without caring for anything (dont even care if your brother is gonna die, kash lagaa).. Ye jahaan faani hai means the world will anyway come to an end.. this is not eternal.. your life is like a bubble that is going to be burst anyway…

Your have a eye for detail… really appreciated… but i am little confused… how can we overlook “ashtray” (No smoking) its a wonderful track….and truly underrated one… Gulzar saab has done an amazing work as usual… lines like “haath dalo…na haath dalo… k waqt se cheele hue lamhon ki raakh garm hai… ungliyaan jalengi… ye ashtray poori bhar gayi hai”

Has to do with his own freedom (Cigarette) and his responsibilities/liabilities/belongings (Brother).. Infact the best part was when the brother tries to suicide in different ways, he doesn’t die… Which means the life and death is not in your hand (not even baba’s hand) then why do you care and frightened of death … and he dies when he doesn’t try..

    RK,
I do believe Anurag did kept song confusing intentionally.. He did show that even after John takes a few Kash, his brother is alive.. Though that action of John has initiated some action (and his brother tries to commit suicide, or John thinks so that he would be dying), but the brother is not going to die as a consequence of that action, still the brother dies at the end of the song to keep the Baba Bengali factor alive..

      @Pavan (4,5,6)

its not a post devoted to one film and it was better if we could have shifted the discussion to a post solely devoted to No Smoking and Hesitation is there but Hope films still can be discussed freely on PFC like its old days. Hope things are taken in right perspective by all.
      ——
Its true, a director will (always) be keeping the things in a film intentionally. But many times some scenes, fulfilling the conditions of script, are not included in the final edited version to make the film short and when many songs are added later then few scenes have to be removed from the final version. So many times something remains missing and while director/writer/editor and few more, who have been associated with the film since the time of its scripting stage, may be having a definitive impression about the film, it will not carry same meaning to the audience. For them, if a missing link is attached then things become clear and coherent. Perception will be different for audience.
Its said so many times that death may come to a person, lying on his bed and falling down from a height of 12 inches and people facing high degree of adventure may remain alive.
So a man may die by slipping in the bathroom or on road if he slips on a banana peel. Thats fine.
Thing is in which format film presents something.
We can not be blind towards the fact that Film has certain gaps and which have harmed the over all impression of the film.
A film creates a space in which events are happening and there is a purpose behind everything. Whatever is happening is carrying the narration ahead and everything is interconnected.
      Re: K’s brother
      (1) Anjali and girl friends: K’s brother’s one lung has been removed and K smokes in the house? Anjali- search me
      (2) Doctor, with hearing aid, to k.” Take your brother to some hill station. make him do some yoga shoga. dont smoke near him etc etc”.
      (3) Baba Bengali shows K that his brother is inside the smoke chamber
      (4) K to Inspector,” Mera bhai germany mein rehta hai, wo german bolta hai, use hindi likhna nahin aatee”
      (5) K’s brother during song Kash lagaa in an indian hospital surrounded by Indian people.
Abovementioned 5 secenes are the total scenes devoted to K’s brother.
Just before the end, K gets up and sees Anjali lying besides him on the bed. Inspite of few scenes, with obscure meaning, dealing with Anjali as Secy of K, Anjali has been present in a coherent manner in the film.
Abbas, Doctor, K’s friends, all are present in real sense and not symbolically and they have been tackled that way only then why this confusing approach towards his brother?

We can even imagine that, K is sitting before Inspector and starts smoking. No such song as Kash lagaa is there and once he finishes his smoking, call comes and he is told that his brother has committed the suicide.
This looks bit effective. Though there was a need to keep a proper track record about his brother. Why so many versions? Why he cant be present in K’s life as Anjali, Abbas and others are? Either change the dialogues among Anjali and her girl friends and doctor and K or keep him in India in real sense also and change the dialogue which K says to Inspector.
Song’s philosophical tone is quite good. More than song its overall handling issue of K’s brother. Song may be good, may be good visually also but is it strongly attached with the overall film or its a weak association?
It will work so well if its an independent video song but when its in the film then it has to be seen on the basis whether its following a continuous flow with the story or not? Is it carrying the narration ahead as an important part of the film or its looking like a patch work?

We can recall the use of Wahan kaun hai tera song in Guide, which was used so effectively to carry the narration ahead.
It was representing a philosophy towards the life in general and was serving the specific purpose of that portion of the film also. It was not looking like a patch work. It became a important part of the film. It cant be used as a separate video song.

If film creates a premise and then violates its own rules then it has to do something with the film and not with the watching of the audience.
I had mentioned Irregular approach towards role of veiled faced woman in the post on No Smoking made few days ago.
When Abbas calls her she tells him that he would get his parcel (fingers) once person recommended by him, comes to Baba Bengali’s den.
But in the end audiences can see very clearly that K is trying to convince some of his friend that if he wants then he can take appointment for him and at same time he opens the box and takes out the finger.
Even metaphors have to follow a trend in a film.
Few such things can not be justified in the film. They seem mistakes or results of overlooking by the team.
If few things were refined then surely film could have been much more comprehensive, coherent, compact and a far better film what we have got now.

That aside, Good topic and interesting choices!

@PavanJha: That’s a good song from Just Married. I prefer Sonu’s ‘Jaagte Raho’ though…it had sublime lyrics by Gulzar saab. Fine album by Pritam!

RK and PavanJha (1 and 4)
I didn’t miss hear it. I always though it’s fani, not pani, but then i looked up 4-5 web sites that provide you lyrics and they all had it as Pani, I didn’t just believe them, it kind of made sense with Pani as well- Bulbula and Pani go together and Paniyon mein behta ja, sort of makes sense, not so much fani, but either way, you still get the feeling.
    PavanJha 7,
Thanks for the list. That’s my ROI from the post. I was hoping I would get back 10-15 gems that I haven’t heard. You gave me 8. I’ll check them out.
    Rohan,
I also used to be a Shann fan, but he has disappointed lately in some songs with high potential, Om Shanti Om title song is the best example where his vocals don’t justice. It’s always difficult to match up to Kishore Kumar as the song is based on Ek Hasina Thi from Karz, but Shaan does a grave injustice to the song.
    Rohan 11,
Once again, thankf for the list. KKC doesn’t quite fit in. The entire album was extra ordinary, one of my all time favourite.Try listening to KKC album in the night. But then some people may argue even NS album was not ordinary.
    Adarsh, Arun, Steve,
Good to know there are poeple with exactly similar taste.
    Steve,Arthi
thanks for the lists. As I said, that’s my ROI.
    Sethumadhavan Sir,
My apology. Once again, I have committed the mistake of confusion Telugu and Tamil. Somehow I thought Vineeth and Abbas were Telugu heroes and this was a Telugu original. But, may bad. Sorry about that.

      @A Singh(34),
Re: pani replacing phaani on some web sites which provide lyrics, it can be a classic case of tendency, students face while copying same assignment every year and mistake of the person, who had made the assignment first time, is blindly copied by new students. :)
Your ears had given you right listening. Its Phaani or faani, whatever one likes to write, and its clearly pronounced by the singer.
While one may need to do efforts to get right word in Zindagi — kash laga.
as its not sung clearly. It could be Zingagi ke, or Zindagi mein,
But combining by its follower line, hasraton ki raakh udaa
it may fit better in the form “zindagi ke kash laga”.
