Fall in love with ANURANAN

ANURANAN has bagged the Best Bangla Film Award in National Film Competition is director Anirudh Roy Chaudhury’s debut film. But the director has expressed his mature thought and imagination through his brilliant command over the craft of Film making. The film reminds me those famous lines of Truffaut which I like to repeat in my own way : ANURANAN helps us to understand ourselves, which is, after all a fundamental purpose of any work of ART.
9 good reasons to fall in love with ANURANAN
1. The writer director is emotionally charged to the deepest level. The film proves that he has intense love to his wife, unquestionable respect to his wife and he trusts his wife so much that it is not easy to believe in today’s environment. Proof? The scene where Rahul Bose feeds her wife Rituparna, the director canned this scene straight from his heart. It is not a simple shot taking; it is creation, work of ART. The film gives us the feeling of feeling good, feeling better, sense of feeling elevated from present situation.
2. Art is a mean to be more human, the film serves this purpose of Art.
3. Technically brilliant, content wise modern. ( I must add here that the camera movement is somehow orthodox with limited movement and almost uninspiring camera angle.)
4. All characters are real. Feelings are real; the theme gives us courage to live as human being.
5. A progressive film in all respect.
6. Clear in thought, clear and committed to humanity.
7. One of the finest INDIAN films I have ever seen.
8. Music is extraordinary.
9. This is a work of ART.

    anuranan won soomething!!!!!!!
this is the shoddiest and dontknowwhattocallthisshit piece of movie making i have seen in my entire life.. (arguably that is.. a film called Indu still gives me the shivers)

    Anuranan is
    1. Lame content wise and in every other sense
    2. the characters and the actors acting them out are soo over aboard that u feel nauseous after every scene
    3. progressive film none the less - progressing straight to the depths of mediocrity
    4. one of the worst films EVER made anywhere :-)

@DPac, thanks that you have gone through my post.

  3. vatsal on November 2nd, 2008 1:53 am

@Utpal to e honest, i too found it quite limp, way too smooth n serene for liking…the background score, the actors all seem to suggest some unsaid, implied profundity - which, for the life of me, I failed to comprehend…for i found the subject as ordinary as any other bollywood melodrama..
as for going overboard, rahul bose takes the cream of the cake…i did like him in Mr & Mrs Iyer, but ever since, y must he keep acting like a romantic retard in every single film?
anyway, i’m sure bangla cinema has much better films in offering than anuranan

  4. rabindro on November 2nd, 2008 3:00 am

The hall where I watched this, people were giggling. Though it was a mostly Bengali crowd. It’s interesting how some of the shoddiest movies ever made manage to find fervent devotees. Pretentious is a polite word to describe this work of genius.

@ loved the breathtaking shots of Kanchangjunga both in day and night!!

    DPac / Rabindro….

Of course you have a right to yr point of view but just for curiosity which, in yr opinion of course, is the recent bengali film which u liked?

Rabindro.. i could tell u of many more audiences which reacted very differently.. and believe me, there was no pretention in their reactions!

From yr reactions what i find amazing and I must say encouraging is that how differently ppl can react to the same piece of work.
    All the best ! :-)

  7. DPac on November 2nd, 2008 11:57 pm

    @Neha,
Havent had the oppurtunity to see any recent bengali movies. are you suggesting that this is the best recent bengali movie?
if so god save us all!!!!!

and this is not a knee jerk point of view or opinion..
there was absolutely nothing worth salvaging in this movie.

and please tell us what we missed if thats the case

    @DPAC
check the rituporno ghosh film, “KHELA” which released recently and the budhadeb dasgupta film, ‘kalpurush’ which finally got a release in kolkata this year and remains one of my favorite film of the year.
and if that aint your type of film, then there is always our very own mithunda with ‘fatakeshto’ a movie that can give ‘gunda’ a run for its money.

  9. Rusted rick on November 3rd, 2008 1:59 am

btw just to add to whatever has already been said…
Arunanan sucked big time, it was irritating, gross and pseudo in every way possible.
i remember reading an interview of the director during the release, he came up with some neat explanation of the title and resonance, which made all my pseudo sensors go crazy in alarm.

  10. DPac on November 3rd, 2008 2:35 am

RR, we need to exchange notes on those films ;-)

  11. Prasun on November 3rd, 2008 3:21 am

Saw the film dubbed in Hindi as thats the version that released in Pune. And the hindi dialogue really killed the movie … was so pretentious and superficial … Infact had consoled myself imagining that the dialogues in Bengali will be good …
but honestly had an interesting plot and a very nice cast …

  12. Debkumar on November 3rd, 2008 4:57 am

I always had a question regarding this movie which is a mystry to me….here it goes…

Why on earth Raima goes to his husbands site and claim herself as rahul’s wife????

Secondly, if i remember correctly(i saw it long back) rahul talked to rituparna quite a no of time from the site…..if he does not have any wrong intention, why did not he tellher?

lastly, who on earth talks like the way rahul and rituparna talked in the movie?

  13. rabindro on November 3rd, 2008 6:39 am

Anjan Dutta is doing some interesting work. Try catching his ‘Chalo Let’s Go’ and ‘Bong Connection’. Like many recent Bengali ‘art’ films, one thought these would be garbage too. But was pleasantly surprised. Check them out.

  14. Tushar on November 3rd, 2008 2:14 pm

I saw Anuranan after watching Bong Connection and all kicked about contemporary Bengali cinema scene. And that was it.

  15. neha on November 3rd, 2008 10:26 pm

We obviously have very diverging points of views but i think the movie has a very interesting concept which is beautifully portrayed. It’s a different sort of film, and honestly (from whatever little i have gathered from yr comments) i think it’s yr pretentions which don’t let u see that. As a woman I can feel for Raima. It’s a very sensitive portrayal of character done…and there are hundreds of audiences (including people who have a lot more knowledge about cinema than you or me)who agree with me…

I’m not saying the movie is not without flaws.. but that does not negate what is beautiful and touching about it.. in fact I would say that the flaws are vastly overshadowed..

But I would like to say something to u guys, for whatever it’s worth.. it’s not advice, just an observation… I see u have an attitude of looking down on things which u don’t like… and I’m sure it extends to other things as well, not just this film.. Of course it’s possible that there is something u dislike but I doubt if that should give u the right to be condescending about it.
Having a point of view and being negative are 2 separate things.

The beauty about any piece of art, literature, film, music… is that it has different meanings and appeals and points of appreciation with different ppl. The same work can extract so many diverse reactions from different people. And no particular view or reaction is right or wrong. They are just different expressions of what we as individuals are. And this diversity needs to be celebrated and encouraged, not the other way round!!!

Sorry if that was ‘preachy’ and no offense meant.. but I see these kind of negative comments so much around me these days (Not about this film but about everything and anything which someone might not like) that I find it disturbing..

Thanks for bearing with me :-)
    Cheers!

P.S: Even if u don’t agree with me.. Just think about what I said.

Anuranan was a waste of time for me. The performances were bad and the story was pretty boring. There was nothing to keep me interested.

  17. DPac on November 4th, 2008 2:32 am

    @Neha,
Seriously, I meant every bit of what i wrote in the first comment. This is the worst movie I have seen all year. And it is NOT about looking down on the movie at all. I dont understand when someone calls a spade a spade why one should be polically correct about the feelings of the spade.

Unfortunately, most of the time I tend to think/look/analyse anything in the most balanced way (i feel like killing meself sometimes) and then comes something like Anuranan which is a breath of such stale air that even I dont feel confused about why its so nauseating.

Raima maybe the saving grace of the movie. but we r not talking about raima but about the movie. if one picks and choose the parts one likes there will be something to like for sure after all its someones hard work we r talking about. but that certainly doesnt mean u have to balance it out by saying ‘its a different film’

Sure its different in that its so badly executed. However pure the directors intentions were if it doesnt traslate the movie is crap. and I am not being negative here, if u can watch 15 movies into the movie without wincing once at the performance and execution and still say this is one of the best movies u are a puzzle, :-)

No offense taken at all, but please elaborate on what u mean about the ‘flaws being mostly overshadowed’ by whats beautiful and touching. i’m all for understanding where u r trying to say.

and what pretentions are u talking about

  18. rabindro on November 4th, 2008 5:34 am

In Heaven, everything is fine. In Heaven, everything is fine. You’ve got your good things. And I’ve got mine.

  19. neha on November 4th, 2008 10:25 pm

U seem to have missed the point completely DPac. Every form of art has its own audience and takers. There are ppl who find even Tennyson nauseating. So that means nothing. They are also entitled to their point of view. And that is what is the beauty of art.
I am not going to justify my “points” for liking the film because I don’t feel the need to. Personally for me any great piece of work is when it leaves something of itself within me. Whether it be a good book I read, or a piece of music I listen to, or anything else.
If it touches me and leaves an impact on me, it works for me. It’s that simple.

And what I’m trying to explain to u is that there is no rule book for this nor can ANYTHING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD be universally appealing to everyone.

To give you an example, someone mentioned Khela as a better film. But for me it didnt work at all. There was nothing which touched me about the film. For me it was superficial and nothing to write home about. It had no “soul”. And a piece of art without soul is like a body which might be beautiful but which is dead.
But that does not take away from someone else who might have found something for themselves in the film.

I used Khela only as an example. It could be any other movie, book or anything else which u’ve seen.

Maybe I have been able to explain myself.

    Cheers.

  20. DPac on November 5th, 2008 1:44 am

    Neha,
that is as generic as u can get
how about talking about the soul which u mentioned?
If all u have is ‘ it touched me so its great’ well i dont have anything else to say. Please dont equate any film to a natural phenomona like a flower u may like or a color which ‘touched’ you.

what u see (case in point anuranan) is someones making a rational decision of making a film, narrating a story in a linear fashion with (over the top) characters, what u see what the director is trying to say and how its perceived are all stuff one can talk about and when u say that in some ‘intangible’ level it ‘touched’ u you are forever closeting urself in a box which has no opening.

I hope u r getting what im trying to convey.
    Either ways cheers

Hi all, it is really interesting to exchange our views. We grow like this.

  22. neha on November 7th, 2008 11:08 pm

    Really DPac!
Either u havent been reading what i write properly, or you don’t comprehend it.

But as i always say- “each to his own”

    cheers to u too.
