Its Summertime. Time to hit the bitches…oh I mean beaches in the day & hit the bars at night. Its the Testosterone Frenzy Time. In that spirit I showcase my 2nd article in my series of ‘Listomania’ – The Best Sex scenes on Cinema. Sex on screen has a special meaning to many of us. That was my sex education. No one told me about the bird & the bees. It was in a kungfu movie in my neighbors house with his family that I encountered my first sex scene. Because it was a kungfu movie it was even more confusing. It was hard to figure out who was the guy & who was the girl, and most importantly “what the fuck is happening”. I remember when I saw the 1st porn I would remember it in the middle of a class or while having dinner & start laughing uncontrollably. That was a long time back. We have come a long way since then. Here is my list of movies with best sex. Its not necessarily a list of best sex scenes ever. It the essence of sex in that film. There is no order of this list. It’s a random list of must watch movies just for its sex.
In the Realm of the Senses - Nagisa Oshima’s controversial film made in 1976 was banned in JAPAN. Yeah this movie was made before most of us were born. And it tops my list. Its unlike anything I have seen. Either this film will disgust you or you will love it. There is no middle way. Let me quote thecontroversy from Wikipedia for you guys –
“Strict censorship laws would not allow the film to be completed properly in Japan. To get around this, the production was officially listed as a French enterprise, and the undeveloped footage was shipped to France for processing and editing. At its premiere in Japan (and in all prints of the film there ever since), the sexual activity has been optically censored.
The film was initially banned at its premiere at the New York Film Festival in 1976, but later screened uncut; a similar fate awaited the film when it was to be released in Germany. The film was never available on home video until 1990.
Many individual scenes have been cut from the film for the sake of local censorship. The BBFC granted the film an “18″ certificate (suitable for adults only), leaving all of the sexual activity intact, but ordered that a shot showing a prepubescent boy having his penis pulled as punishment be optically reframed so that the act itself was not shown. The film was, however, available in completely uncut editions in the United States, the Netherlands, and several other territories. The film is still banned entirely in Ireland. The current United States Fox Lorber video version of this film is completely uncut and does in fact have this scene, as does the French DVD edition.

However, in the Maritimes the film was rejected again as the policies followed in the 1970s were still enforced.”
SEX & LUCIA – I bet this is a movie Almodovar envies. It’s a beautiful Spanish movie with beautiful people & beautiful places. Everything about this film is beautiful. The narrative is not chronological. It also is one of the most sexually explicit films I have seen which in the end still doesn’t take away anything from the story. Unlike most other such explicit films where the sex overshadows everything else in the film. It has two erections, oral sex, and masturbation, apart from ‘normal catholic sex’.
NINE SONGS - A movie with no story. A movie about sex between 2 people & their love for music. The format is also interesting. We see a couple in a music concert at London’s Brixton Academy 9 times. We see one song from 9 different bands. Some great music from Dandy Warhols, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream among others. In-between two songs we see the couple talk, dance and mostly have sex. Explicitly. And its beautiful. And this movie was made by none other than our A MIGHTY HEART director Michael Winterboom.
CALIGULA – When my friend suggested this movie to me he told me that this is the most expensive porn ever made. He could be right. We have only read & imagined about the orgies & perversion of Rome (Or any other empire for that reason). This is the only film where you see it. This movie also is one of the most controversial film ever made. It also stars Malcolm McDowell, Peter O’Toole, John Gielgud and last years Oscar winner Helen Mirren. Read more about the film. BASIC INSTINCT – No such list can be complete without this movie. Who can forget Sharon Stone crossing her legs. It has to be one of the top 10 most sexy films in movie history.
MONSTERS BALL - This is a sex scene that got Halle Barry an Oscar. And deservingly so. It is also very controversial. Pollitically correct people find it very offensive. A black woman craving to be fucked by a white man. But then these guys find everything political. If you ever go to liberal arts school in America you’ll find plenty of them. But politics aside this was a great sex scene.
KAMASUTRA - Now this is a movie I have seen the sex scenes countless times. The movie sucked. But Indira Verma sizzled like no one ever has on celluloid. The scene where Navin Andrews takes her cover away & we see her naked only for 5 seconds, but those 5 seconds are worth in gold.
BOYS DONT CRY – This one is the odd one out. I know many of you are wondering how come? Am I sick? No. Do you remember the scene when Swank makes love to Chloe in the backseat of the car by the factory? It is 2 chicks making out. But the director & Swank had done such a mindfuckinly amazing job that I saw Swank as a boy. In that scene even for a second I didn’t think of Swank as a girl. And that’s why that scene has always been a special Lovemaking scene for me.
UNLAWFUL ENTRY- I have a huge crush on Madeleine Stowe. I still think she is the most beautiful woman on earth. Ask Shahrukh Khan. This movie also might not be groundbreaking or special as far as sex is concerned, but her presence is what makes it special for me.
SHOWGIRLS - This movie had so much T&A its almost insane. Though the film bombed, as far as the sex content is concerned it is right there on top.
Some other films deserve mention.

1) THE Lives of Others… had a very tender love affair between the Artist and his wife, even if it ends up all messed up… it makes one wish for a love affair without conditions and the sex scene implies intimacy when the spy regrets intruding on them.
2) Crash… Come on! I mean David Cronenberg’s Crash.
3)A history of Violence… Both scenes, their vedroom scene is very intimate and intense as well as the intense criminal like romp in the staircase.
I belive one has to see the freaking movies and immerse into the story to understand the character psyque…
