Few more gems to look forward to……

I really apologise that i keep adding to my ever growing list of films i am looking forward to but then it’s a great sign that suddenly there are so many films to look forward to..some of the first and final cuts that i saw in last one month and i loved them absolutely..

JAB WE MET;- I loved it absolutely.. the version i saw was on the avid, along with preetam and shivam nair..what a film..If you loved socha na tha, you will orgasm over this one.. I don’t like the title but i lovvvvved the film.. it took me completely by surprise.. IMTIAZ ALI’s sophomore effort proves his debut was no flash in the pan.. his repartee is the best i have seen in a long time on indian screen..kareena kapoor in a stunning performance.. probably the best by an actress this year.. a talkative, self loving, eternally romantic and positive NONSTOP NONSENSE woman and shahid kapoor definitely has never been better.. start to finish , i saw the raw version and didn’t get up from the seat.. even forgot my bag in the editing room because i wanted to talk so much about it.. this is that one mainstream lovestory that comes out each year and becomes the popular film of the year, it just might be the biggest sleeper hit of the year.. fresh, simple yet what a screenplay..go for it

QUICK GUN MURUGAN- the sambhar addict from MTV .. he has an entire film to himself.. and it’s in tamil and english with subtitles.. here Quick Gun fights Rice Plate Reddy’s evil non vegeterian plans and saves the world from Beef.. Laugh out loud funny, Howlarious, with yoriginal yenglish shcore by Illayaraja, sung by S.P.Balasubramanium a la Tik Tik Tik and I Don”t Know what you sayyyy..the south indian cowboy is going to be back on big screen courtsey the yoriginal creator Shashank Ghosh of Waisa Bhi Hota Hai-Part 2.. tenyears in the making

KHOYA KHOYA CHAAND- sudhir mishra, the old warhorse.. film about films .. in the fifties.. haven’t seen the film but read the script and saw the promo and am absolutely waiting for it..

DIL DOSTI ETC- again have not seen the film but love the rawness i see in the promos..
really like Imaad shah and want to see him.. he plays that guitar very well.. heard him once in a remote restaurant in Delhi.. it reminds me of my DU days..

ANTARDWANDA- By Sushil Rajpal.. till now a cameraman.. my senior from Hansraj, batchmate and friend of Tarsem Singh, ex- FTII has made a film.. his first screening and we went because we knew him, no one knew anything about the film.. we sat in the auditorium and the film began.. set in Bihar.. about a boy from delhi university who has appeared for his UPSC and wants to talk to his conservative dad(Vinay Pathak) about his girlfriend who is pregnant, and gets kidnapped by a man who wants him as his son-in-law.. so the boy(raja chaudhary) is tortured, but he doesn’t agree to be the the DAMAAD, but is still married of in a unconscious state,to the kidnappers daughter(a stunning debutant from FTII acting batch called SWATI), like it is the ptractice in many parts of that state, popularly called “jabariya shaadi”.. marriage on the gunpoint.. extraordinary.. the kind of film that should be doing the rounds of the international festivals but then noone really knows about it.. A masterpiece funded by friends.. who all are various partners in the film and mostly from the state.. must watch if it gets released.. a thriller , a reality check , and a point made..

Also looking forward to films like “the fakir” by anand surapur.. the man behind Phatphish who produced QuickGun and completed Frozen and gave us RABBI the singer and much more..the underground superstar of Channel V , whose known work is the “Zaroorat Hai” music video, and “Junction” by Atul Sabharwal, a script that made me feel jealous..and much more..

Believe me .. there is going to be a change in order in this hindi film industry.. there definitely is a new wave.. i have seen it coming.. the world is also seeing it.. which is why Ronnie Screwwala is on the cover of NEWSWEEK and not Aishwarya rai or Yashraj or Amitabh bachchan.. IT’S HAPPENING MAN..

  1. From the promos, Jab we met seems like a movie we have seen many a time. can’t think of names but Pyar to Hona hi Tha and DDLJ come to my mind. I am surprised to read your take on the flick. I loved the promo of Dil Dosti etc and will definitely catch it.

    Anurag!
Thanks once again for eliciting interest in promoting good works of other film makers!! This is what I would call camaraderie (did i get the spelling right?) and this is what is required to change the course of the film history in India.

Ilayaraja and SPB? something that we have not heard for a long time. I would drink to that!!!

    Anurag,
Thanks for ur information …. am really looking forward to Dil Dosti etc and Khoya Khoya chand. The guy Himaad is really looking convincing at least in the promos and after a long time m gonna see smriti mishra :) . Once again i am comprehensive abt “Jab we met” like earlier i was abt “socha na tha”. Cant they find better title. But will watch for Imtiaz ali.
Really praying for “Antardwanda” to see theatrical release otherwise cant get this movie.

The second (dialogue) promo of “Jab We Met” is decent, i mean, the teaser; it sort of is interesting cos it kinda of tells the synopsis of the story, which is a bit interesting.

but what is with hmmmmmm…. lalalaaaaaa…ohoooohoooooo.. is he thinking of “Dum Laga….”? Well, anyways, most of todays directors are… “Dum Laga…”

Yeah Anurag, I agree with you…I never wanted to see SOCHA NA THA…because of Abhay Deol but finally when I did for Imitiaz [since he belongs to my my hometown] and was truly surprised by his film – his script and dialogues! I found Abhay too to be a charming actor [and my gut feeling says he will finally arrive with 'Manorama 6 feet under' although I have not seen the film]. Coming to JAB WE MET- even I am not liking its title nor the name but knowing of Imitaz’s script sense and dialogues-he might score again! I am sure his film will be better than what it is projecting to be…

Yes, as far as Rajpal’s film ANTARDWAND…is concerned- I must say I tried dissuading him when I got to know of it -just three days before he was leaving for the shoot as I knew many others in the Industry were also working on the same subject of jabariya shaadi’ but Rajpal went ahead and did it and yes – I was surprised once again..he made it well with great sensitivity and now I am praying / hoping that it finds a good release otherwise it’s would remain an experiment / an effort that failed! We can’t afford this! I want it to succeeds so that it opens the floodgates for many to make more of such films-a possibility! Then only we can say that yes…the Hindi film sceneario is changing…we need all the films you mentioned to do well commercially ..or else things would be back to square one! I first laughed at a statement attrituted to Mr.Praveen Nischol where he supposedly said that “All scripts are good! It becomes beautiful when Shahrukh Khan says ‘Yes’ -otherwise it remains good!” But on an after thought -I realized he was right in the given scenario…somewhere this has to really change!

    Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!!!

No, not just for the reccomendations, but the fact that someone else (besides me) actually likes and has mentioned Imaad Shah!!

Did you see him in ‘Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota’??

I am tired of telling people about him, yet no one ever listens…(Surendra Nath Hiwraale..are you listening????!)

Anyways, yes, ‘Jab We Met’seems to be unlike any of the films we have seen the Kareena-Shahid jodi in, and I really do wanna see it.

But thanks again Anurag, as now that you have mentioned Imaad, maybe others will take notice too!!

From the promo’s we can clearly see the actress is overacting or reacting..I personally feel he shld have opted for someone else.

The film can be good but its seems to be very predictable.. Not denying can be good..

Anurag, i want the option of money back guarantee on JAB WE MET or 1 pe 1 free. JAB WE MET ke saath NO SMOKING FREE. LOL

Waise mera gut feeling hai ki NO SMOKING ek CULT film rahegi but wont be a moneyspinner. Just a Guess. :)

One Mr.Joginder Tuteja of glamsham seemed to have read this post and was excited enough to write about it:

However he seemed to have (*wink* *wink*) forgot to mention the source.

    HI! Anurag,

Saw Antardwanda by Sushil, since he is a friend of mine too. Yeah you are 100% right, its an amazing movie, and sure I too didn’t get up throughout the movie. Sushil has definitely made a master piece, and hope it will get its due credit when people watch this movie during this Film Festival. This movies is going to make its impact, certainly in Bihar and Eastern UP.

I haven’t seen a Bollywood movie in 10 years so when I accidentally happened to watch Jab We Met on the plane, I started off with my usual cynicism. But I surprised myself by watching the whole movie in one go without switching to the channel even once.
I can’t really comment on any off-beat movies that are being made in India these days since quick web browsing only gets you the masala news and all the gossip and news about Bollywood masala.I might as well watch Hollywood stuff for quick gratification and stunts!
I did happen to see Salaam Namaste just couple of weeks back due to the hype it had created here in Melbourne Indian circle. I completely hated it, don’t understand what the hype was about, utterly shameful movie, embarrassed me big time. But thankfully, I don’t know anyone who watches Bollywood stuff here so I was saved the embarrassment of having to explain what was actually happening in this over the top drama – medical student-chef couple living in a fancy house overlooking the beach, which is not at all possible to rent for a young couple like that unless rich mum-dad pay for the rent.
Anyway, back to Jab We Met. I loved watching India, for a change, in a Hindi movie. All I was hearing recently was movies made for NRI about NRI’s living in UK/USA/Australia and just wasn’t interested. I loved the fact that this movie showed some beautiful Indian regions, which I miss quite a lot at times, having myself grown-up traveling all around India as a defense officer kid.
A simple Indian romance, which reminded me of my college days and early working days in Delhi. I was glad to see that India has not changed that much and there are still normal people around.
It was a welcome change for me from the micro mini girls and ‘vest-loving’ macho men of Bollywood who only drive fancy fast cars and act like over-grown teenagers.
I liked both the actors, they have played their part quite well.
Of course, you have got to take Bollywood with a pinch of salt so it’s not that there are no flaws but they can be easily ignored unless you want to over critical about the minute issues.
Lastly, when in India,I was quite a Shah Rukh fan, romantic ‘guey’ stuff. Silly as it may sound,I quite liked Shahid Kapur in this one and will make a point to watch him when in a mood for some Bollywood masala.I might actually go to cinemas to watch Bollywood, which I have not done since 1997.

Also, this movie has bought me back to Bollywood and I have promised myself to make an effort to look out for good ones to watch on DVD. I will now be reading Anurag Kashyap’s blog to get my recommendations. The web page is now safely bookmarked on my firefox.

Nobody can deny, Jab We Met is definitely inspired from the two Richard Linklater movies ‘Before Sunrise’ and ‘Before Sunset’
