Film-fair? Awards…

It is that time of the year again. When Filmfare announces its award for excellence( in movie making? well, that’s for you to figure out). You might want to scratch your head and wonder why this article is there in the first place, isn’t it PFC? The place where we don’t look beyond Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAS and their likes. Where it is assumed(yes, yes, you guessed it right, the ‘intellectual types’) we think A stands for Akira, instead of Aditya and K stands for Kieslowski rather than Karan. I know. But, then the fact that these awards are the alleged representatives of one of the best movies to come out of our country( National Awards, you may argue, but then, is the majority of ‘aam junta’ really bothered?) makes one flinch after glancing through the nominations.  I didn’t even think twice when one of the many illegetimate sons of Filmfare awards, gave Race the Best Screenplay. But, this is Filmfare, and in its 54th year. Oh darling ye hai India, we are different. By almost every means. We award a Maine Pyar Kiya over Salaam Bombay, when a portrayal of Aman Mehra wins the best supporting award, and portrayal of Bhiku Mhatre is given a consolation nomination. Well, I could go on and on.

The question I want to raise here is: What should be the yardstick of these awards? Should it go by awarding genuinely good movies, or, the movies which the masses lapped up? Once in a blue moon, a Hindi movie qualifies, which can do both. When did the Black lady lose its moral? For as long as I can remember the awards of early 80’s and the decades preceding it were still applaudable. ( Ardh Satya, Kalyug, Khubsoorat.etc were awarded the best movie).

Shouldn’t there be that balance, heck, I would even settle with that. But, year after year, what we have is senseless movies having a bagful of stars making it to almost all the categories. There is always a critics award, to keep everyone happy. A Power award so that the tube lights of the venue can be switched on. This year too, has been no different. Most of the movies about which people debated here and intricately pointed out flaws have been shamelessly put there. It is a starry night after all. Where is Mumbai Meri Jaan, Dasvidanya, Mithya, Aamir, and for me the best movie of the year – Oye Lucky Lucky Oye?

Bol Bol, why did you ditch me WHORE?

  2. Trust me, half the awards will go to Rab Ne. Why? Simple.. First, check out the venue for Filmfare this year. Second, Aamir wont come to awards so SRK will dance, jump, wear a towel on his chest, make silly jokes, host the show and do everything to get him awards.

I dont know of any awards ceremonies that actually promote talent. While UTV is all bringing in the new wave and the audience too is slowly progressing, the awards continue to be regressive and pay whore-homage to the camps.

A Wednesday,Aamir,MMJ,Mithya,OLLO etc to feature in it.No point cribbing about it- they’ll say these are popular awards & the nominees are chosen by the readers themselves.Aap logon ke liye hai na- critics choice awards :)

they just pretend these are popular awards. Actually nominees and award winners are chosen by themselves. I am saying this because they increase the number of nominations for a category to fit the nominations of people whom they want to. What else explains 6 nominations in few categories while 5 in others. Just check the list of nominees: http://hindicine.blogspot.com/2009/02/nominations-for-filmfare-awards-2008.html

Filmfare Awards went downhill since they gave SRK an award for Best Actor for DDLJ instead of Aamir for Rangeela. DDLJ swept all the awards. How can any one take filmfare seriously when they dont give an award to Manoj Bajpai for satya. Anil Kapoor did not win the Best Actor for his brilliant performance in Virasat but Shah Rukh did for his overacting in DTPH. Tabu did not win a Best Actress for Virasat but Madhuri did for Dil To Pagal Hai. Urmila did not win an award that same year for Judaai but Karishma won it for her screeching in Dil to pagal hai. Karan Johar wins Best Director for KKHH instead of RGV for satya.

The very premise of “Popular” awards is what I question. What is ‘popular’? And as awards are subjective, it will always remain a problem. Filmfare has been gradually deteriorating its standards. An award function that is held in the premises of a film production house, is an idea that is ridiculous enough! No doubt people call it an entertainment and TV show. That’s all that it has reduced to.
    .
But trust me Tanul, you will still have people in our fraternity who would kill to win that trophy. Filmfare is, after knowing all the gimmicks that go on backstage, STILL important to many of our filmfolks. That remains a truth as important as the one you have mentioned in your post. People want to win it, desperately. It matters to a lot of people.

Now now… we always knew that filmfare (it doesnt deserve ‘caps’) awards were never fair. But what about all the bastard childs? Are none of the awards fair? As soon as I saw Sajid Khan host the screen awards, I realised even that could not have any credibility. What about Zee, Giifa, Iifa (whateveR) and the rest of them? Are they all scum rewarding scum?

Lets not even talk about the National Awards. I think the National Awards has potential to be fair and should be telecast live like the rest of them. But that would mean sponsors, that would mean favouritism, aargh. Nevermind.

And when people like Aamir look up to the Oscars, ppl question ‘Why are we givin so much importance to award ceremonies for the white-folk?’ Its bcos our award ceremonies are a commercial farce. Oh and so are the Oscars but not so blatantly!

I think someone should start an online website which provides recognition to the best cinema. It should cover cinema of all languages – or seperate sections for all languages. It should purely be based on polls/voting. This could be a big operation with scope for advertising to help run it. Am sure with marketing and advertising, it’ll catch up. If indiafm (or bollwoodhun-gay-ma watchamacallit) can become a popular wesbite, then so can something like this.

Oh well.. or maybe after a hard day’s work am just indulging in some ‘khayali pulao’.

Arati, u r totally right at post 20. The Filmfare trophy lost its credibility long ago…but the film folks still think of it as their greatest achievement in life. And that’s exactly what it has become…something to just please the Bollywood bigwigs. There’s nothing more to it.

The nominations went beyond bad a long time ago…they’ve even gone beyond downright embarassing. Not just the nominations….the categories are worse…Fresh face of the year, Screen Duo of the year, Critics’ choice, Young achiever award, Power award (what the hell is a power award…power to do what…lift 100 kilos of onions, wtf?)

Having said that, there are some good nominations this year in the Music category. Sonu Nigam in “In Lamho” was certainly one of the best male playback performances last year. I was also happy to see Alka Yagnik nominated for “Tu Muskura”. She rendered that song brilliantly. Rashid Ali (Kabhi Kabhi Aditi), Shilpa Rao (Khuda Jaane) and Shruti Pathak (Mar Jaawa) are also interesting choices. Though some outstanding performances like Benny Dayal (Tu Hi Meri Dost Hai, Kaise Mujhe) and Dominique Cerejo (Yeh Tumhari Meri Baatein) were ignored, I thought it’s a start…maybe they are getting some things right after all. That was until I had a look at the Best Music category…A.R Rahman for Jodhaa-Akbar (of course, that has to be there), A.R Rahman for JTYJN (well, it was a good fresh soundtrack, so kinda deserving), A.R Rahman for Ghajini (still okay though I’d have preferred Yuvraaj…still Ghajini was an eclectic soundtrack, fair enough), SEL for Rock On (one of the three most radically different albums of 2008…the other two being Aamir and Tashan). So if those two are nominated, that would be a pretty satisfying music award nominations overall, including the Playback singers and lyricists. That was when I saw Pritam nominated for Race…and all hope was lost. As they say…

They call it popular awards. So, they have kept a big loophole over there. You say it’s not quality and they will say ‘but it’s popular’. Now, who is going to measure popularity and how? So, on one hand you have Kamalahaasan winning 15 plus filmfare awards and Shahrukh ‘Chamkesh’ Khan winning equal or more. If nothing else he gets an award for ‘the most popular screen pair’ or ‘most powerful bollywood personality’or any such rubbish.
If it is really for popularity then I think Salman and Aamir should have won more often. But the fact is, it is neither for a truely deserving one nor for the truely popular one. It is just an ego message for few and a time pass for the aam janta. Don’t take it very seriously. Look at it only as a time pass. Enjoy the item number if your favourite star is perfroming and doze off before they announce the ‘best actor-male’ with a lot of unnecssary drama.

People give the popular awards argument and aren’t even consistent with that. It’s more of an excuse to give the award to the candidate with best influence , or the best chamchagiri. The only way it’s gonna come to an end is when the audience stops watching this crap. Because they don’t care who they give the award to , or whether they are gonna be considered fair or not. @Sputnik (19): I agree with you on Filmfare going downhill but totally disagree on the SRK – Aamir thing. Both of them were brilliant. You are forgetting that DDLJ went on to become an all time loved film. And this was SRK doing the romantic thing for the first time. You can say he got repetitive later, but DDLJ, I beg to differ. And even if Aamir got the award for Rangeela, maybe you and many others would have agreed but lacs of others would have disagreed. With awards, there will always be lot of people who will disagree.
    .
But I agree that Filmfare has been consistently disappointing since the lat 10 years or so..I track them out of habit, not passion and excitement, like I used to till about 1999. That’s when I was last happy with Sanjay Dutt winning for Vaastav.

Do you think that the whole world tom toms about “great movies”? No. Period. It has never happened and one shouldnt expect it. It doesnt happen in the west or any part of the world. Do you think Filmfare is a intellectually stimulating, thought provoking cinema magazine? No it isnt and to be honest it doesnt pretend to be also. Its a glossy gossip magazine. Period.
Interestingly enough, lets loook at it this way…why is that PFC (which i love from the day it started) is running a campaign to raise 10,000USD while filmfare has 3 pages of ads for every 2 pages of written material? Because of the simple reason that it sells. The aam junta whom we tend to condescendingly look down upon cares a rats ass about the brilliance of thought of an “art” film. They care about entertainment and since recently want something other than masaala.
Are the awards rigged? Yes, I bet they are. Does it make any difference to me? no it doesnt. Filmfare is a way of thought and i appreciate it. Doesnt mean that I have to run it down for being populist.

Yeah, absolutely…though Aamir is right in boycotting all these awards for the farce that they are…I disagree that he was given a raw deal in 95. I mean, SRK was equally good, if not better. In hindsight, everyone seems to think so…but Raj from DDLJ was a first-of-its kind character and SRK played that role wonderfully. It’s a different thing that he did a hundred spinoffs of the same character later on. But DDLJ is certainly a landmark performance. Aamir was also terrific as Munna, but then someone obviously had to win. It was not him.

DDLJ won 10 filmfare awards. It broke the then existing record of 7 fimfare awards by Deewaar. It won Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Comedian, Best Lyricist, Best Screenplay, Best Dialogue and Best Male Playback Singer. DDLJ songs were a bigger hit as the movie was a bigger hit but Rangeela’s music was brilliant and they had to give it to A R Rahman. Rangeela won only Best Music and Best Supporting Actor for Jackie.

You are right that it was the first time that SRK did the out & out romantic thing with DDLJ (KHKN is more of a looser) and he got repetitive later. You are right that with awards, there will always be lot of people who will disagree. But Shah Rukh overacted a lot in the dramatic portions in the second half of DDLJ. Here’s where the whole slow pauses and twitching eyebrows started. I was disappointed with his performance after Baazigar,Darr and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa.

Actually Aamir’s performance was better than Rangeela in Akele Hum Akele Tum but it was not nominated and well it actually was almost a scene-scene dialogue-dialogue copy of Kramer vs Kramer and Dustin Hoffmann won a Oscar for best Actor. He is brilliant in the courtroom scene where he is in the witness box but then again Dustin was brilliant in the same scene too.

Aamir actually started boycotting fimfare awards after 1992. That was the last time he came and he performed a song from Hum Hai Rahee Pyar Ke his then forthcoming movie. I think Anil deservedly won for a different role in Beta and he was very good in the climax scenes but Aamir thought he deserved it for JJWS and started boycotting Filmfare awards.

What I dont like about this whole boycotting thing it looks like a whole stunt. Infact Aamir gave an interview in 1995 that he wont attend award functions to accept any award for Rangeela and he won a Best Actor the next year for Raja Hindusthani after 7 years and 8 Best Actor nominations later.

Lata Mangeshkar withdrew from filmfare awards in 1970 and Asha Bhonsle did it in 1978 so that other younger singers get a chance. Aamir could have done the same by withdrawing from the nominations but instead he always gets nominated and then someone else walks in to accept the award on his behalf. So what happens to that award?

@Sputnik (49) I wonder what happens to that award myself. I think he should withdraw from nominations too, if that is his problem. I totally understand his disgust towards these functions. His blanket withdrawal will makes things clearer and easier for everyone. At least someone else stands a chance to win one, someone to whom these awards matter more.

DocOck & Arati@20 “Filmfare has been gradually deteriorating its standards”
The standards of Filmfare were NEVER right.
You guys would be surprised with this trivia : Bimal Roy’s wife made a public remark in one of her interviews that “Filmfare and other magazines had given very poor ratings when Do Beegha Zameen was released. But then please do not ask me how that film won the best film award year” :-)
But I thank Filmfare for the award for DBZ !
sophocles@44 : I agree that FF is turning to be a gossip magazine, like every other magazine. But I can vouch for its authenticity ( magazine and not the awards ) that in the olden times, it was ABSOLUTELY without any gossips. Atleast till 1970 ( I have gone through only till 1970 as of now ). It was PURE fun and entertainment and knowledge through the articles of those days. The views of some writers did not match, but no gossips, mind you !!
This whole fast-food business , advertisements, promotions and insecurities within the industry-wallahs ( so sucking each other’s **** ) has led to more and more gossiping :-(
